  • False sense of security with `snprintf_s`

    MSVC's "secure" sprintf funcions have a template version that 'knows' the size of the target buffer. However, this code happily paints 567890 over the stack after the end of bytes... char bytes[5]; _snprintf_s( bytes, _TRUNCATE, "%s", "1234567890" ); Any idea what I do wrong, or is this a known bug? (I'm working in VS2005 - didn't test in 2008 or 2010)

  • What could cause my browserS to keep crashing?

    The situation: Windows 7 ultimate on standard box 4 GB RAM. The problem: IE 8 kept on crashing. Tried upgrading to IE 9 - no better. Then I thought I will have to kick IE into touch and go with Firefox. Same problem Firefox crashes. Gave Chrome a chance - same problem the browser just says sorry, and closes / restarts. Other problems, this is not the best machine I have ever had, Word sometime closes unexpectedly, and I have trouble with Microsoft Updates failing first time.

    I just want to know how could I access the applications installed on xp mode in windows 7. I just installed the application in the default location in xp mode which is c:\program files Do I have to install it on the drive where windows 7 is installed so that I could access it quickly? Because I still have to wait for about 2-4 minutes just to open up a word document(ms office installed in xp mode) that is saved in my desktop in my physical machine. Please help.   • If tables are so evil, why does joomla use tables for its layout?

    When you create a template you don't use tables. but when joomla rendereds the page, there are at least 4 places where tables are used to structure the content. Does this tell you something about tables or the fact that the joomla community should invest more time and learn how to code css or just the fact that tables are needed when you don't know what css is going to be throw in later(which probably means they are of some use)?

  • JQuery templating engines

    I am looking for a template engine to use client side. I have been trying a few like jsRepeater and jQuery Templates. While they seem to work OK in FireFox they all seem to break down in IE7 when it comes down to rendering HTML tables. I also took a look at MicrosoftAjaxTemplates.js (from http://www.codeplex.com/aspnet/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=16766) but turns out that has the same problem. Any advice on other templating engines to use?

    With ASP.NET Webforms, I could drag and drop a control on a form and be able to access its properties: if (number == 0) AddButton.Enabled = false; Although I cannot drag and drop a control on a ASP.NET MVC View template, can I change its attributes? For instance: disable a button in some conditions and be able to enable it if conditions change. Be able to change the text of a button from "Next-" to "Finish" etc.

  • Outlook new message size nearly 1mb

    I've been using Outlook 2010 for several weeks with no issues. Suddently, a few days ago, the size of my outgoing messages got huge. Looking at thsi it appeas that a huge CSS style is beign created with around 14,000 definition for list items, making the message almost 1mb before I even typed in one word. Emails before that point were very small. Needless to say I can't remember changing anything, nor can anyone around here provide any possible explanation... Any ideas?

  • Temp files created in every folder in Windows Server 2003

    So we have some folders which are shared over the AD Domain (Windows Server 2003). It was just noticed that in 2 of those folders (which contain only Excel and Word files), whenever a file is opened and closed, the temp file which was opened corresponding to that file still remains. Apparently, this's been going on for the past couple of years (which has led to an insane amount of temp files in each folder/subfolder under those shared folders). These shared folders are under the D:drive and not C: drive. There is only one group (containing 2 users) who access the said folders. I cannot understand if this has to do with the settings/permissions for the User/Group/Individual Client machine. For now, I have manually deleted all the temp files from each folder/subfolder. While this is not critical at the moment, I'd still like to clear this up. Also, it takes an additional fraction of a second to open folders that contains more than 10,000 temp files.     In the context of C# 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and NHibernate; I've got the following scenario: Let's assume an entity Product that have an association to ProductType. In a product edit view; how do I implement that only a sub-set of the product's properties are shown based on the ProductType association in an elegant and DRY way? I.e., different properties shall be shown for different values of a property of the ProductType. Use a product view model builder, and from different view models automagically generate the view with my own Html.EditorForModel() (including drop-downs and other stuff not out-of-the-box)? Attribute the properties of one view model and use the Html.EditorForModel() way aforementioned? Use one model, but implement different web controls (view strategies) (can it be done DRY?)? Something else entirely?

  • XSLT Select all nodes containing a specific substing

    I'm trying to write an XPath that will select certain nodes that contain a specific word. In this case the word is, "Lockwood". The correct answer is 3. Both of these paths give me 3. count(//*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')]) count(BusinessLetter/*[contains(../*,'Lockwood')]) But when I try to output the text of each specific node //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][1] //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][2] //*[contains(./*,'Lockwood')][3] Node 1 ends up containing all the text and nodes 2 and 3 are blank. Can some one please tell me what's happening or what I'm doing wrong.   • Find workspace location using ANT

    I'm working on a build script in the Flash Builder version of Eclipse. This build script needs to import launch configuration .launch files into the user's workspace. However there doesn't seem to be an available ANT var for determining the workspace location. While stepping through the available vars with intellisense I noticed that ${osgi.instance.area} does point to my current workspace but when I tried to echo it back in a running ant script it just spat out "${osgi.instance.area}" and not the path. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

  • Escaping Code for Different Shells

    Question: What characters do I need to escape in a user-entered string to securely pass it into shells on Windows and Unix? What shell differences and version differences should be taken into account? Can I use printf "%q" somehow, and is that reliable across shells? Backstory (a.k.a. Shameless Self-Promotion): I made a little DSL, the Vision Web Template Language, which allows the user to create templates for X(HT)ML documents and fragments, then automatically fill them in with content. It's designed to separate template logic from dynamic content generation, in the same way that CSS is used to separate markup from presentation. In order to generate dynamic content, a Vision script must defer to a program written in a language that can handle the generation logic, such as Perl or Python. (Aside: using PHP is also possible, but Vision is intended to solve some of the very problems that PHP perpetuates.) In order to do this, the script makes use of the @system directive, which executes a shell command and expands to its output. (Platform-specific generation can be handled using @unix or @windows, which only expand on the proper platform.) The problem is obvious, I should think: test.htm: <!-- ... --> <form action="login.vis" method="POST"> <input type="text" name="USERNAME"/> <input type="password" name="PASSWORD"/> </form> <!-- ... --> login.vis: #!/usr/bin/vision # Think USERNAME = ";rm -f;" @system './login.pl' { USERNAME; PASSWORD } One way to safeguard against this kind of attack is to set proper permissions on scripts and directories, but Web developers may not always set things up correctly, and the naive developer should get just as much security as the experienced one. The solution, logically, is to include a @quote directive that produces a properly escaped string for the current platform. @system './login.pl' { @quote : USERNAME; @quote : PASSWORD } But what should @quote actually do? It needs to be both cross-platform and secure, and I don't want to create terrible problems with a naive implementation. Any thoughts?

  • Vim: How to create autocomplete/chooser from entries in buffer?

    Found out today that if you press Ctrl-Opt-Cmd-V in Textmate, it produces a cute little "chooser" dialogue in-place that allows you to page through your recent clipboard entries. It looks very similar to how CTRL-P and -N work in VIM, except it shows whole lines instead of simple word objects. It seems like this would be doable in VIM — it already has a buffer full of entries (the YankRing buffer, for example), and it already has a chooser, but I can't think of where I'd look to start putting these two together. Any ideas? (I know that YankRing already does this by opening a new window full of buffer content, but I wonder if there's a way to do it without all the window switching/closing/etc)
