• Erlang node acts like it connects, but doesn't [migrated]

  I'm trying to setup a distributed network of nodes across a few firewalls and it's not going so well. My application is structured like this: there is a central server that always running a node ([email protected]) and my co-worker's laptops connect to it on startup. This works if we're all in the office, but if someone is at home, they can connect to the masternode, but they fail to connect to the other nodes in the swarm. I.E., erlang fails to gossip correctly. To correct this, I've change epmd's port number and changed the inet_dist_listen ports to a known open port (1755 and 7070 respectively). However, something fishy is going on. I can run net_adm:world() and it reports that it connects to master node, but when I run nodes() I get an empty array. Same with net_adm:ping('[email protected]'). • Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

• Cursor seems to freeze in the first attempt of typing - Unity 3D, 12.04

  It happens in the first attempt of typing, no matter is after the startup, or 5 minutes later, or then after. The cursor (or maybe it's the system) seems to freeze, no matter the application I use, taking up 5 sec to appear what is typed. Subsequently, everything is normal, using another applications. @Anwar Shah suggested it could be a daemon waiting to run before the lauching of the first application. Turning off Zeitgest didn't help. It occurs only with Unity-3d. Tested with Unity-2d, everything is fine. Tried to change some Compiz settings, nothing worked, although not tested with every single parameter. Also I deactivated Ati proprietary driver, no effect. My system: AMD E350 1.6Gh, 2G-Ram, ATI graphics - Ubuntu 12.04, 64bits. Update 1: the cursor is blinking normally before I start typing. After the first character (which is not showed), seems to freeze, taking 5 seconds to get normal again. Very annoying, specially when you want to access login sites. Update 2: I tested on a different and old machine (Athlon 64 4800 x2, 4Gb ram, no problems - takes 2 seconds, acceptable. I think it could be related to my specific hardware (Samsung RV415), but not sure about it. Anyone experiencing something similar? Is that what I should expect, or can be fixed or improved? Thanks.

• Install on Acer Aspire 4752

  I am at my wits end with this computer. I bought and Acer Aspire 4752 with a fully loaded version of Windows 7 on it. I prefer Ubuntu so I began to install 14.04 from USB. Got the error: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. So I tried a different USB stick, same error. Tried different versions of Ubuntu, got the same error. I've used startup disk creator and Unetbootin to make start USB boot devices. I can boot with the USB drive and run Ubuntu that way. I even checked the hard drive using the tools in Ubuntu. Everything was fine, except it said the hard drive was hot. I tried a different hard drive. Got same error above. I ran a test with mem86, everything was fine. No matter what I do, using the USB gives me the Errno5 error. I then switched to using DVDs. Now I keep getting an uncompression error when installing Ubuntu 14.04 or 12.04. I can't figure out for the life of me why I get nothing but errors. Can anyone help?

  As with my JavaOne 2012: OpenJDK Edition post a while back (now updated to reflect the schedule of the talks), I find it convenient to have my JavaOne schedule ordered by subjects of interest. Beside OpenJDK in all its flavors, another subject I find very exciting is Nashorn. I blogged about the various material on Nashorn in the past, and we interviewed Jim Laskey, the Project Lead on Project Nashorn in the Java Spotlight podcast. • Learning Programming from scratch

  I am entirely new to programming, other than basic HTML/CSS knowledge. I want to learn programming as quickly and efficiently as possible, and I'm willing to put in the time (at least 70 hours a week). The reason I want to learn is because I have a startup that I've written a business plan for and have prototyped in Photoshop (both front-end and back-end pages). My goals is to have a prototype of the site up within 6 months. I have a good aptitude for math (A's in all math courses up through DiffEq and Linear Algebra). I assume learning programming from scratch can be a daunting task -- not because it is particularly difficult, but because there are so many areas and so much information. I want to make sure that I learn as efficiently as possible and have individuals (in addition to Google) to solicit advice from and that will help me when I get stuck or have questions. I know with other's help, my learning experience will be both more productive and enjoyable. What is the best way to find people that will help me in this? What are some good 'live' resources in addition to asking questions on Stack Overflow? Thank you very much for your time and help.

• ARTS Reference Model for Retail

  Consider a hypothetical scenario where you have been tasked to set up retail operations for a electronic goods or daily consumables or a luxury brand etc. It is very likely you will be faced with the following questions: What are the essential business capabilities that you must have in place?  What are the essential business activities under-pinning each of the business capabilities, identified in Step 1? What are the set of steps that you need to perform to execute each of the business activities, identified in Step 2? Answers to the above will drive your investments in software and hardware to enable the core retail operations. More importantly, the choices you make in responding to the above questions will several implications in the short-run and in the long-run. In the short-term, you will incur the time and cost of defining your technology requirements, procuring the software/hardware components and getting them up and running. In the long-term, as you grow in operations organically or through M&A, partnerships and franchiser business models  you will invariably need to make more technology investments to manage the greater complexity (scale and scope) of business operations.  "As new software applications, such as time & attendance, labor scheduling, and POS transactions, just to mention a few, are introduced into the store environment, it takes a disproportionate amount of time and effort to integrate them with existing store applications. These integration projects can add up to 50 percent to the time needed to implement a new software application and contribute significantly to the cost of the overall project, particularly if a systems integrator is called in. This has been the reality that all retailers have had to live with over the last two decades. The effect of the environment has not only been to increase costs, but also to limit retailers' ability to implement change and the speed with which they can do so." (excerpt taken from here) Now, one would think a lot of retailers would have already gone through the pain of finding answers to these questions, so why re-invent the wheel? Precisely so, a major effort began almost 17 years ago in the retail industry to make it less expensive and less difficult to deploy new technology in stores and at the retail enterprise level. This effort is called the Association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS). Without standards such as those defined by ARTS, you would very likely end up experiencing the following: Increased Time and Cost due to resource wastage arising from re-inventing the wheel i.e. re-creating vanilla processes from scratch, and incurring, otherwise avoidable, mistakes and errors by ignoring experience of others Sub-optimal Process Efficiency due to narrow, isolated view of processes thereby ignoring process inter-dependencies i.e. optimizing parts but not the whole, and resulting in lack of transparency and inter-departmental finger-pointing Embracing ARTS standards as a blue-print for establishing or managing or streamlining your retail operations can benefit you in the following ways: Improved Time-to-Market from parity with industry best-practice processes e.g. ARTS, thus avoiding “reinventing the wheel” for common retail processes and focusing more on customizing processes for differentiations, and lowering integration complexity and risk with a standardized vocabulary for exchange between internal and external i.e. partner systems Lower Operating Costs by embracing the ARTS enterprise-wide process reference model for developing and streamlining retail operations holistically instead of a narrow, silo-ed view, and  procuring IT systems in compliance with ARTS thus avoiding IT budget marginalization While parity with industry standards such as ARTS business process model by itself does not create a differentiation, it does however provide a higher starting point for bridging the strategy-execution gap in setting up and improving retail operations.

• How can i install ubuntu on my ntfs hdd without formatting?

  My hdd is just one partition in ntfs (500gb) and 430 gb is used by my photos/movies/music etc which i never will want to lose. Actually i installed ubuntu on a usb flash drive (using it right now) but it is too slow that way. But my problem is : My computer is damaged ( maybe chipset or but not sure) and none of the windows versions (xp,vista,7) works on my pc. I get blue screen error as soon as windows startup logo shows. But ubuntu just works flawless. That means i cannot use wubi. I wanted to shrink my hdd without losing data (which can be done in windows) but found nothing about that on ubuntu forums. Is this possible? Or install ubuntu on my ntfs filesystem? Note : I don't have chance to backup 400 gbs of data. Sorry for my question if it's written a bit compex. I hope you get the point and someone has an idea ;)

• Operating System not Found after installing Ubuntu in a Sony Vaio

  I just bought a Sony Vaio SVS15115FLB that came with Windows 7, after enjoying the PC graphic power for a little, I decided it was time to install Ubuntu 12.04. First, I inserted a USB stick, reboot, press F11 but a message saying that no OS was found on the USB, so then I used a live CD. It booted fine and I installed Ubuntu, then when it was time to restart the PC, it didn't boot to GRUB but it went straight to Windows and it began an startup error and was looking for a solution, after it was done, it restarted and then it booted again to Windows and to the same start up error solution thing. I freaked out, so I booted again the Ubuntu live CD, and installed Ubuntu over everything, after it installed I rebooted and then a message appeared saying Operating system Not Found, and I have no idea why. So I Googled again and found this post on Boot Partition, I did everything exactly on that post, but it didn't work (by the way, this was the message): The boot files of [Ubuntu 12.04 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. It appeared the first time, then I did it all again and then it was gone. I rebooted and nothing, the same Operating System not found message appeared. So I decided to create a partition for Windows, hoping for something, but the message still appears. I really have no idea what to do, but there is something odd, if I insert the USB stick containing Ubuntu 11.10, the message that says that there is no OS in the PendDrive flashes for a fraction of a second and the boot straight to Ubuntu 12.04 without problems (and booted to Windows when I installed it, ignoring Ubuntu), right now I'm using it like that, but its pretty annoying. Can anyone advise me how to fix this? I'm no expert on this kind of things (boot, GRUB, recovery and stuff like that).

• How to ask the boss to pay for qualifications?

  Hi, I'm working as a junior developer for a startup company, and have been working here around 7 months now. After 4 months, we had a late quarterly review, and just before the boss mentioned there was a training budget, and we should let them know what training we needed and they'd get it for us. I asked for some training at the time, but 3 months have passed without mention of it, and I have since learnt what I needed in my own time (I just can't stop learning new things!) I took on a new role recently, so have been given some cheap ($60) training for that however. Now the next review is approaching, and I would like to get Adobe Qualified Expert qualifications for ActionScript 3 / Flex. I was told by a contracted co-worker who had left that I should try to get the company to pay for this, as it's something they can tell potential investors as a selling point. My question is though; how do I approach this with my boss? I don't want it to sound like I'm looking for another job and want the qualifications to look elsewhere!

• Getting Help with 'SEPA' Questions

  What is 'SEPA'? The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is a self-regulatory initiative for the European banking industry championed by the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB). The aim of the SEPA initiative is to improve the efficiency of cross border payments and the economies of scale by developing common standards, procedures, and infrastructure. The SEPA territory currently consists of 33 European countries -- the 28 EU states, together with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway and Switzerland. Part of that infrastructure includes two new SEPA instruments that were introduced in 2008: SEPA Credit Transfer (a Payables transaction in Oracle EBS) SEPA Core Direct Debit (a Receivables transaction in Oracle EBS) A SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) is an outgoing payment instrument for the execution of credit transfers in Euro between customer payment accounts located in SEPA. SEPA Credit Transfers are executed on behalf of an Originator holding a payment account with an Originator Bank in favor of a Beneficiary holding a payment account at a Beneficiary Bank. In R12 of Oracle applications, the current SEPA credit transfer implementation is based on Version 5 of the "SEPA Credit Transfer Scheme Customer-To-Bank Implementation Guidelines" and the "SEPA Credit Transfer Scheme Rulebook" issued by European Payments Council (EPC). These guidelines define the rules to be applied to the UNIFI (ISO20022) XML message standards for the implementation of the SEPA Credit Transfers in the customer-to-bank space. This format is compliant with SEPA Credit Transfer version 6. A SEPA Core Direct Debit (SDD) is an incoming payment instrument used for making domestic and cross-border payments within the 33 countries of SEPA, wherein the debtor (payer) authorizes the creditor (payee) to collect the payment from his bank account. The payment can be a fixed amount like a mortgage payment, or variable amounts such as those of invoices. The "SEPA Core Direct Debit" scheme replaces various country-specific direct debit schemes currently prevailing within the SEPA zone. SDD is based on the ISO20022 XML messaging standards, version 5.0 of the "SEPA Core Direct Debit Scheme Rulebook", and "SEPA Direct Debit Core Scheme Customer-to-Bank Implementation Guidelines". This format is also compliant with SEPA Core Direct Debit version 6. EU Regulation #260/2012 established the technical and business requirements for both instruments in euro. The regulation is referred to as the "SEPA end-date regulation", and also defines the deadlines for the migration to the new SEPA instruments: Euro Member States: February 1, 2014 Non-Euro Member States: October 31, 2016. • How to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 in EFI mode with Encrypted LVM?

  I'm trying to properly install Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with the alternate install CD ".iso" on a lenovo Thinkpad X220. Default Hard Disk (with a pre-installed version of Windows 7) has been replaced with a brand new SSD. The UEFI BIOS of the lenovo Thinkpad X220 is set to "UEFI Boot only" & "USB UEFI BIOS Support" is enabled (I'm using an external USB DVD reader to perform Ubuntu installation). The BIOS is a Phoenix SecureCore Tiano, BIOS version is 8DET56WW (1.26). The attempts below are made with the UEFI BIOS settings described above. Here's what I've tried so far: Boot on a live GParted CD Create a GPT partition table Create a FAT32 partition for UEFI System, set the partition to "EF00" type ("boot" flag) Leave remaining space unformated Boot on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with alternate CD: Perform the install with network updates enabled Use manual partitioning FAT32 partition created with GParted is used as "EFI System partition" Remaining space is set to be used as "Physical volume for LVM" Then "Configure encrypted volumes" using the previous "Physical volume for LVM" as the encrypted container, passphrase is setup. • Hybrid Graphics on Ubuntu 12.04 switching to discrete

  I have a Sony Vaio VPCCB-27FX with hybrid graphics. Using vgaswitcheroo enables me to switch my discrete card off to save power. Now when i want to switch to the discrete card for performance, my system freezes. • What should I do when my team leader is unfair for no reason? [closed]

  I'm a new software developer and this is my first job. It's a startup and the CEO and the working environment is just great. I work really hard and I believe that I also do my job well. But recently, I have felt like my team leader is being unfair to me for no reason. It appears that he is nice to my co-workers, but not me. I figure he is mad at me, but I didn't bother to find out why. I really love this company and I really love working there. But if my team leader continues to be unfair then I have no option other than leaving. How can I fix this? EDIT: The other day he called me into his office and wanted to see my work in the afternoon (Yes, in my country, at summer season after 5PM is afternoon. My office begins at 8AM. And I'm not saying I've problems to work after 5PM). At the time I was facing a weird runtime error and I was pretty tired. I explained the situation to him. Then he found a small logical error in my code and asked me why I didn't fix this. I told him I was trying to resolve this runtime error and that I was sure that this logical error had nothing to do with the runtime error. He then proceeded to yell at me. After fixing the logical error that runtime error was still there. This is not the only occasion he has been unfair to me. I'm saying is being unfair because he doesn't do this kind of thing to other developers when they do really silly mistakes.

• My GLSL shader isn't compiling even though it should. What should I investigate?

  I'm porting an iOS game to Android. One of the shaders I'm using wouldn't compile until I reduced the number of uniform variables. Here are the uniform definitions: uniform highp mat4 ViewProjMatrix; uniform mediump vec3 LightDirWorld; uniform mediump int BoneCount; uniform highp mat4 BoneMatrixArray[8]; uniform highp mat3 BoneMatrixArrayIT[8]; uniform mediump int LightCount; uniform mediump vec3 LightPos[4]; // This used to be 12, but now 4, next lines also uniform lowp vec3 LightColour[4]; uniform mediump vec3 LightInnerOuterFalloff[4]; My issue is that the GLSL shader wouldn't compile until I reduced the count of the above arrays from 12 to 4. My understanding is that if those 3 lines were arrays of 12 then I would be using 56 vertex uniform vectors. I query the system at startup (GL_MAX_VERTEX_UNIFORM_VECTORS) and it says that 128 are available. Why wouldn't it compile with 56? I'm having issues on the Kindle Fire.

• HP Envy dv6t-7300: Disabled WiFi through button and can't enable it anymore

  Well, I have a HP Envy dv6t-7300 laptop that came with a Ralink RT5390 WiFi card. Everything was working perfectly, and eventually I press the WiFi button in my keyboard to toggle the card on/off. Until today, all worked right: if the wifi was off (wifi LED amber) and I press the wifi button, after a few seconds the LED turn white and everything works. If I repeat the process, the wifi LED turn amber and the card get disabled, but now, I can't turn it on anymore. running sudo rfkill list all I get: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes So, I ran sudo rfkill unblock all but nothing changed. As a side note, if I run sudo ifconfig wlan0 up, the indicator LED gets white (indicating that the card was enabled), but Ubuntu still say that the card is blocked by hardware. Extra information: the card works without issues in windows and in Ubuntu installer (booting from a live CD). I'm using the card out-of-box, using the drivers already included in Ubuntu 12.10. The module rt2800pci is loaded and working fine, not blacklisted, etc, etc. The card and the button toggle worked flawlessly until today, when I toggled it off and can't turn it on anymore... The problem is back, but in a different manner: if I don't press the wifi key a few times during the grub loading, in the login screen the wifi button will be ambar (disabled), pressing it will toggle it white (enabled) or ambar (disabled) again, but ubuntu still says that the network card was disabled by hardware and doesn't connect... In other words, if I don't press the WiFi button a few times when Ubuntu is booting, it will be stuck with the "network card was disabled by hardware" message, even if the light is white (enabled). Any clue? Maybe a error in some startup script or config file?

• Is it common to only pay developers for the time they said a project would take?

  I work at a small startup (<10 people), and I was recently assigned (along with one other developer) to a relatively small project. The project involved moving an existing iOS app to Android. The client told us they had built the app for iOS in 300 man-hours. Not knowing at the time that this figure was completely false, we naively and optimistically assumed that if they could build the app from scratch in that amount of time, we could easily "port" it in a similar amount of time. Therefore, we drafted up a fixed-price contract based on 350 man-hours, with a 5 week deadline. (We are well aware now of how big of a mistake this was... Never let the client tell you how long it's going to take!) Anyway, by week 4 we had already surpassed our 350 hours, and we estimated that there were at least 2 more weeks left on the project. We were told to continue working, but that the company could not afford to pay out on overdue projects anymore. I thought this just meant "be more careful about estimates in the future". However a few weeks later, the company president informed us that we would not be getting paid for any time past 350 man-hours. We argued over the issue for almost an hour. He claimed, however, that this is standard practice for many organizations, and that I was unreasonable for making a big deal out of it. So is this really a common thing, or am I justified in being upset about it? Thanks in advance for any advice!

• How system services are started in 12.10?

  One thing that always confused me in Ubuntu was how system services are started. I know that Ubuntu uses Upstart and supports SysV, but which one is used to start the services? This matters when you want a "manual" start for a service. For example, on my system i have files for the following services either in /etc/init.d/<service> (Upstart) and /etc/init/<service>.conf (SysV): acpid, mysql, networking, qemu-kvm, ufw, libvirt-bin So if i want to disable MySQL execution at startup, i must use the Upstart way or the SysV way to disable it? Also, how can i tell which of those is really used to start a generic service? Edit The really doubt here is not how disable/enable services using SysV/Upstart. What really confuses me is that some services seem to be defined (and enabled) in SysV and Upstart at the same time. Is there any precedence between them (like if mysql is enabled in both launch it using SysV)? Or can it be the case that one tool uses the other in background?

• How do you maintain focus when a particular aspect of programming takes 10+ seconds to complete?

  I have a very difficult time focusing on what I'm doing (programming-wise) when something (compilation, startup time, etc.) takes more than just a few seconds. Anecdotally it seems that threshold is about 10 seconds (and I recall reading about study that said the same thing, though I can't find it now). So what typically happens is I make a change and then run the program to test it. That takes about 30 seconds, so I start reading something else, and before I know it 20 minutes have passed, and then it takes (if I'm lucky!) another 10+ minutes to deal with the context switch to getting back into programming. It's not an exaggeration to say that some things that should take me minutes literally take hours to complete. I'm very curious about what other programmers do to combat this tendency (or if I'm unique and they don't have this tendency?). Suggestions of any type at all are welcome - anything from "sit on your hands after hitting the compile button", to mental tricks, to "if it takes 30 seconds to start up something to test a change, then something's wrong with your development process!"

The remaining spots are ordered based on viewing history and popularity. Tapping the play button moves the user to the theatre where they can watch previews or full episodes streaming from Fancast. Tapping an extra presents the user with show details as well as interactive content that may be included as part of co-marketing efforts. Co-Marketing with Dynamic Content The success of Comcasts services are tied to the success of the networks and shows it purveys, making co-marketing efforts essential. In this concept FOX is co-marketing its popular show Glee. A customized panorama is updated with the latest gleeks tweets, streaming HD episodes, and extras featuring photos and video of the cast. If WP7 apps can be dynamically extended with web hosted .xap files, including sandboxed partner experiences would enable interactive features such as the Gleek Peek, in which a viewer can select a character from a panorama to view the actors profile. • Dual Boot menu with Ubuntu and Windows 8 not showing up

  I know a lot of posts have been written, and I had read most of them when I encountered the problem. None of them solved the problem. I have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 on top of Windows 8. Now my PC simply boots into Windows 8. If I press 'Esc' at start of BIOS, and then F9,the GRUB shows up and Ubuntu is listed at the top of the several options to boot from. I did run Boot-Repair once I logged into Ubuntu explicitly from GRUB as mentioned above. I did all said by Stormvirux in this link but was still unsuccessful. The debug info is listed here. Something which confuses me is the message which Boot-Repair stated after it did its job. You can now reboot your computer. Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda (8004MB) disk! The boot files of [The OS now in use - Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, 200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition) I don't know why it says it is far from the start of the disk as I see it first in the GRUB menu which comes up at startup. One more input, when I try to place the GRUB in sda, Boot-Repair does not progress giving me the following error: GPT detected. Please create a BIOS-Boot partition (>1MB, unformatted filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again. Alternatively, you can retry after activating the [Separate /boot/efi partition:] option. I had to select Separate /boot/efi partition: sdb2
