  My work just started (a couple of months ago actually) allowing us access to our MSDN subscriptions.  This is totally cool.  I’ve been begging, borrowing, and stealing all these years to have access to Visual Studio and the other tools.  Now, I’ve got them all.  It is totally cool.  What’s even cooler is that I’m going to be installing them (along with a brandy spanky new Windows 7 installation) on a MacBook or MacBookPro in the coming weeks.  How’s that for most excellent?

• Size mismatch error while downloading packages [closed]

  I've been having this annoying problem lately since I upgraded from Linux Mint 9 to Ubuntu 12.04. It started when I was installing VLC from the Ubuntu Software Centre a few weeks ago. I kept getting this error with packages with "Size mismatch". This happened with many other programs later on. I just got around it by downloading the packages separately and installing them that way. Now I get two updates for packages I installed in that manner. I tried changing from where I download the packages, it didn't change anything. If anyone can help me with my issue it would be splendid. • Should I work for free while applying for a job?

  An employer usually asks a candidate to do a small project at home ("homework") as a part of applying for a job. Last time I applied for a job (as a web developer), there were aproximately 10 applicants who were all given different tasks. Despite the fact that there was only one vacancy, the company used the work of all of the candidates in one of its projects. Actually, it is quite reasonable for a company to create these "vacancies" just to make people work for free - I estimate, that aproximately 2 weeks of programmer's work was saved with all of the job applications that company had on one vacancy. Is this a common practice and how can you protect yourself from working for free in the future? Have you seen this during your career?

• How to prioritize tasks when you have multiple programming projects running in parallel?

  Say you have 5 customers, you develop 2 or 3 different projects for each. Each project has Xi tasks. Each project takes from 2 to 10 man weeks. Given that there are few resources, it is desired to minimize the management overhead. Two questions in this scenario: What tools would you use to prioritize the tasks and track their completion, while tending to minimize the overhead? What criteria would you take into consideration to determine which task to assign to the next available resource given that the primary objective is to increase throughput (more projects finished per time unit, this objective conflicts with starting one project and finishing it and then moving on to the next)? • Question about whether I should pursue minors or work towards a masters [closed]

  I'm a sophomore about to go into my Spring semester in a few weeks and I am trying to decide some major things that will affect the next few years of my life and was looking for some guidance/advice. I'm currently working towards a Bachelors in Computer Science and my question was whether I should minor in Corporate Strategy and Math or just work towards a Masters in Computer Science? I was wondering if employers are more looking for Masters degrees in Computer Science or if those minors could be beneficial to me. Some things that may affect responses: I already have all my other requirements filled for graduating except my Computer Science classes, I've already had an internship this past summer and am already hearing back from several companies about internships for this upcoming summer. • Is doing AB Tests using site redirection a bad practice?

  I'm developing hotels websites here in Brazil. When the site is done, we do an AB test with the old version to measure conversion and show to the hotel owner how good our site is. Due to the fact that I cannot put the old site inside the new one as a subresource (newone.com/old), currently I'm doing those AB test as follows: 1) I create 2 Google Analytics accounts, one for each site (old and new); 2) I put the GA tags in the old website pages (changing its possibly existent GA ID to the just created one); 3) I put an Javascript code that redirects the user to the old website (in a different URL and different domain) with 50% of probability. So I compare all the metrics, events and goals between those two GA accounts. How bad is it? How Google can interpretate the fact of being, sometimes redirected, sometimes don't? The experiment usually runs for 2 weeks. Is there any other alternative for doing this in a better way?

• Why can't I mount the Ubuntu 12.04 installer ISOs in Mac OS X?

  Over the past few days, I have downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit version of server and desktop to install on an Intel based PC. It is normal from within OS X to double click on an ISO and it will mount the ISO in the finder as well as within disk utility. When I attempt to mount any of the Ubuntu ISOs I downloaded, OS X returns the error message The following disk images couldn't be opened. The reason given for the error is no mountable filesystem. However, I am still able to open the ISO directly from disk utility and burn it to a DVD/CD. What has changed in this release to cause this? Is there something wrong with the current ISOs? The OS X machine I am using is only two weeks old and is having no issues with any other ISO.

• Hulu desktop stopped working on my Dell

  After last weeks flash update Hulu desktop no longer works on my Dell laptop though it still works on my HP Desktop. Here's what CLI tells me on the Dell: Inspiron-1564:~$ huludesktop Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I tried: sudo apt-get install libvdpau_nvidia.so but got E: Unable to locate package libvdpau_nvidia.so and E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libvdpau_nvidia.so' Hulu does work through the browser and through XBMC. XBMC just doesn't seem to match the video quality of the Hulu Desktop. I don't really know why a nvidia.so is needed for my Intel graphics that comes on Dell Insiron 1564's. anyway. So, do you guys have a solution?

• Difference in stats on the same domain - seo related

  Recently i started to optimize my company's website. With a little help of market samurai. One of the adjustments was a www redirect to the prefered domain. We currently rank on #8 for our desired keyword with the domain without the www. If I add a custom url (our domain with www), we see a difference in stats BLP (backlinks to the page) {it's the website on top} Can anyone tell me how i could merge this so we might even rank better for our keyword? What I did so far: 3 weeks ago set the www.duo.be as prefered domain in GWT and put a 301 redirect in place so the duo.be gets redirected to www.duo.be Both domains are in GWT and both with www.duo.be as preferred domain.   Recently I have been delivering Design and Planning Sessions at client sites, and as of recent SharePoint 2010 has been part of that mix. After the activity that goes on during those sessions getting towards the end of them is always a cross roads for clients.  Why?  Because it is time to kick the wheels.  Remind them, and remember, this is not a 1 or 4 weeks ordeal.  This has to be very well planned.   Possible Duplicate: Are certifications worth it? Given that I have no commercial experience to speak of -- and no undergraduate degree -- how can I best demonstrate my programming ability in order to interview for a job? How valuable are the various software certifications? Should I get the OCA? Should I submit samples of my code? Are there some other skills that I should develop? (I picked up Python and Java fairly quickly--a matter of weeks, actually.) I am a undergrad working on a triple major in math, stat and econ. I consider myself proficient with Python and have a working knowledge of Java.

• Is there any map maker for javaME game?

  For the past two weeks I was trying to make a map maker for my java ME 2D RPG game. I failed because i get errors using slick TWL and the forum for this is inactive. So I just wondered is there anyone that knows slick TWL (Themable Widget Library)? Or maybe do you know a good MapMaker where i could upload my map elements build a map and get numbers to use them for building map with LayerManager class? Already found one http://sourceforge.net/projects/tilemapeditor2d/. But the thing is my map elements are in different .png images. In one of those images there is 16 elements (trees water and etc) and those kind of images are 29. So it would be hard to build a map with LayerManager Well I was thinking putting everything into one image and that way it would be simplier.

• Application versioning

  Haven't find similar issue so sorry if thats a duplicate. I'm about to start a migration of an already existing project from one web container version to the another. Currently, the application version is 2.2.5. Business requirement is to deliver a 3.0 version by the end of the year. Additional constraint is to release a working, stable version by the end of Q3. We are about to work in 2-weeks sprints and I'm wondering how can I approach the problem? I was thinking about releasing 2.3 by the end of Q2, then immediately promoting it as 3.0-a1, work on alphas (3.0-a2, 3.0-a3, ...) till the end of Q3, to start with 3.0-b1 in the early Q4 and finally release 3.0 around December. I don't feel comfortable saying that the application is already in 3.0 state in July, but I can't see other options. If you find some book chapters/blogs or your personal experience interesting please share your opinion.

• Just wondering about "Do-It Yourself Apps" on the internet versus apps written by us developers

  Hi, I have been doing Objective-C programming over the past few weeks, and I have learnt a lot. However, I see that there are other Web-companies offering services to consumers directly from their website that allow consumers to create their apps through a point and click and drag features without any code. Clearly they are more cost effective and fast than having a developer write an app. I was wondering if there are any advantages then of having a developer build an app for someone, other than the obvious advantage that its got a custom look and feel. Could someone please clarify, since Im new and would like to evaluate whether it is worthwhile spending time towards learning a whole new development environment when someone could just use a webservice to make an app for multiple platforms Thanks

• SharePoint Database security corruption

  Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. • Visual C++, CMap object save to blob column

  I have a MFC CMap object, each object stores 160K~ entries of long data. I need to store it on Oracle SQL. we decided to save it as a blob. since we do not want to make additional table. we also thought about saving it as local file and point the SQL column to that file, but we rather just keep it as blob on the server and clear the table every couple of weeks. The table has a sequential key as ID, and 2 column of time. I need to add the blob column in order to store on every row that CMap. Can you recommend a guide to do so (read/write Map to blob or maybe a clob) ? Thanks.

• Why isn't Chrome rendering images and fonts correctly?

  I have an Acer monitor and an Intel Pentium 4 running 12.04 32-bit. Chrome renders all webpages like this: This is how CNN should look: I have Firefox installed and its images/fonts look fine. I am new to Ubuntu and comfortable with using Terminal. Beyond that, I have no idea what I'm doing. This happened all of a sudden a few weeks ago. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.   As the second part of the JCP.Next effort, JCP 2.9 launched 2 weeks ago on 13 November, and the first JCP EC ballots with the Merged EC have concluded.   JSR 339, JAX-RS 2.0: The Java API for RESTful Web Services, passed EC Public Review Ballot and was approved by the EC -- 22 yes votes, 2 abstain, 2 did not vote -- view results. • Problem with loading webpage in firefox

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04 and I always keep my pc up to date. For last 4 or 5 weeks, I noticed in firefox, the page displays enough data but spinner in the tab doesn't stop. Not only that, Some page load very quickly and wheel still speaning. Some are very very slow and wheel is as always speaning. Some websites (ex. google analytics) takes more than 5 minutes to load. Some websites load but slider doesnt load and wheel is speaning (ex. blenderdesh.com) I'm facing lot of problems for this. Please help me.....

  I've decided that it's time for me to move on from Geeks with Blogs.  It's been a great platform but unforuntately I've not used it nearly as much as I should.  It's been over a year and a half since my last post.  It's not that I haven't had worthwhile stuff to post, it's more due to a lack of motivation.  Knowing how I work, I think part of the problem with me using GWB is that it's free.  If I don't use it, I don't feel like I'm wasting anything.  With that in mind, I've decided to move to a paid host in hopes that drives me to post more frequently.  My new blog is located at the following address:http://thirteendaysaweek.comIn the coming days and weeks I'll be working on moving my content to the new site and will leave posts here that redirect to the new site.
