• Best way to test a batch email script

  I have a php mail script sitting on a LAMP vps server. The script grabs about 1000 emails and sends them each an html email. I tested the script with about half a dozen of my own test email accounts and things worked fine. But I am concerned something may go wrong when I actually use this script for 1000 emails. Some things I would like to test for are 1) Confirm all 1000 emails were sent and received 2) Test to make sure emails did not end up in people's spam folders 3) Detect any other general failures Does anyone have suggestions on how I can test for the above cases? I would like to read about your experiences building batch email scripts.

  I have the following "download" script in PHP which basically makes an address on my website download the file for the user, eg. mysite.com/download.php?fileid=10 The question I have is, how can I send the file name to the used for the download when a user downloads the .php address with a File Downloaders/Accelerators? eg.   When you read this you'll be awfully tempted to give advice like "this is a bad idea for the following reason..." Bear with me. I know there are other ways to approach this. This question should be considered trivia. Lets say you have a class "Transaction" that has properties common to all transactions such as Invoice, Purchase Order, and Sales Receipt. Let's take the simple example of Transaction "Amount", which is the most important monetary amount for a given transaction. public class Transaction { public double Amount { get; set; } public TxnTypeEnum TransactionType { get; set; } } This Amount may have a more specific name in a derived type... at least in the real world. For example, the following values are all actually the same thing: Transaction - Amount Invoice - Subtotal PurchaseOrder - Total Sales Receipt - Amount So now I want a derived class "Invoice" that has a Subtotal rather than the generically-named Amount. Ideally both of the following would be true: In an instance of Transaction, the Amount property would be visible. In an instance of Invoice, the Amount property would be hidden, but the Subtotal property would refer to it internally. Invoice looks like this: public class Invoice : Transaction { new private double? Amount { get { return base.Amount; } set { base.Amount = value; } } // This property should hide the generic property "Amount" on Transaction public double?   Hello, On a Windows box, I need to extract a RAR archive so that individual files in it go into specific directories. I can provide, say, a text file that lists each file and the target directory for it. Then I need help creating a batch file that will actually extract these files into their target locations.   I'm using Python, for what it's worth, but will accept answers in any applicable language. I've tried writing to /proc/$pid/cmdline, but that's a readonly file. I've tried assigning a new string to sys.argv[0], but that has no perceptible impact. Are there any other possibilities? My program is executing processes via os.system (equivalent to system(3)) so a general, *NIX-based solution using an additional spawning process would be fine.

  Upon the uploading of an image in my application, 4 different sizes are created and saved using CarrierWaves version functionality. However, I am converting all of these versions to JPEG. The source file that is uploaded remains unchanged. So I can upload a TIFF file, and CarrierWave will create :large, :medium, :small, and :thumb versions. My problem is that these files all still end in .tif. Yet they are indeed JPEG files, as I've verified this with the file command. How can I write the filenames correctly for each version, and ensure that CarrierWave will report each version's name correctly?

  I was looking at redirecting handles in batch, when I noticed this: Here is the link It mentions that Handle 3-9 are undefined and can be defined by a program. Now I've read about doing this in C#, but I wondered if this was possible in cmd/batch - and if it is what are its limitations/use. If it is not possible in cmd how would I go about using this, and could it be a soloution to outputing data to the screen and redirecting it to a file at the same time (a problem which has not been able to be done legitametly at the same time).   Hi I am wondering is there a way to do batch updating? I am using ms sql server 2005. I saw away with the sqlDataAdaptor but it seems like you have to first the select statement with it, then fill some dataset and make changes to dataset. Now I am using linq to sql to do the select so I want to try to keep it that way. However it is too slow to do massive updates. So is there away that I can keep my linq to sql(for the select part) but using something different to do the mass update? Thanks

• Execute a batch script from Firefox

  I have written an intranet application from which you can directly connect to a virtual machine by clicking on a RDP-button. The click calls a .bat file, which opens the connection. With IE, this is no problem, as you can choose to directly execute the batch file. But with Firefox, I can only download the script, and have to start it manually afterwards. Is there a way to trust the intranet domain (about:config?) so Firefox allows it to execute scripts directly? Or is there an even better (easier) way to start an RDP connection from Firefox?

  I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example): CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe" If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go. What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.

  If I have 100 HTML files that use a set of CSS classes, is there a utility that I can use to intelligently rename the classes? I know that every editor/IDE has a find/replace in project feature. Using sed you can do the same thing. This is not intelligent because it is a simple string replace. I want to know of a tool that actually understands what a CSS class is and how to replace instances of it. I suppose a fancy regular expression can do the same thing.

  Hi All, I get following hibernate error. I am able to identify the function which causes the issue. Unfortunately there are several DB calls in the function. I am unable to find the line which causes the issue since hibernate flush the session at the end of the transaction. • R plotting multiple histograms on single plot to .pdf as a part of R batch script

  I am writing R scripts which play just a small role in a chain of commands I am executing from a terminal. Basically, I do much of my data manipulation in a Python script and then pipe the output to my R script for plotting. So, from the terminal I execute commands which look something like $python whatever.py | R CMD BATCH do_some_plotting.R. This workflow has been working well for me so far, though I have now reached a point where I want to overlay multiple histograms on the same plot, inspired by this answer to another user's question on Stackoverflow. Inside my R script, my plotting code looks like this: pdf("my_output.pdf") plot(hist(d$original,breaks="FD",prob=TRUE), col=rgb(0,0,1,1/4),xlim=c(0,4000),main="original - This plot is in beta") plot(hist(d$minus_thirty_minutes,breaks="FD",prob=TRUE), col=rgb(1,0,0,1/4),add=T,xlim=c(0,4000),main="minus_thirty_minutes - This plot is in beta") Notably, I am using add=T, which is presumably meant to specify that the second plot should be overlaid on top of the first. When my script has finished, the result I am getting is not two histograms overlaid on top of each other, but rather a 3-page PDF whose 3 individual plots contain the titles: i) Histogram of d$original ii) original - This plot is in beta iii) Histogram of d$minus_thirty_minutes So there's two points here I'm looking to clarify. Firstly, even if the plots weren't overlaid, I would expect just a 2-page PDF, not a 3-page PDF. Can someone explain why I am getting a 3-page PDF? Secondly, is there a correction I can make here somewhere to get just the two histograms plotted, and both of them on the same plot (i.e. 1-page PDF)? The other Stackoverflow question/answer I linked to in the first paragraph did mention that alpha-blending isn't supported on all devices, and so I'm curious whether this has anything to do with it. Either way, it would be good to know if there is a R-based solution to my problem or whether I'm going to have to pipe my data into a different language/plotting engine.

• Help renaming svn repository

  Here is the deal: I created an SVN repository, say, foo. It is at http://www.example.com/foo. Then I did an svn checkout. I made some updates and changes to my local copy of the code over the week. I haven't committed yet. I realized that I wanted to rename the repository. So I did this: svn copy http://example.com/foo http://example.com/bar svn delete http://example.com/foo I finish my changes (and local svn still thinks I'm working under "foo".) svn commit fails because the repo has been renamed. I try to use svn switch --relocate but it yells at me because svn is awful. I try using the script here to replace "foo" with "bar" in my billion .svn/ folders. This replace is taking a long time. I wonder if something hung? Or maybe sshfs failed? I kill it. Ctrl-C. I look and see that half my files have "foo" and the others have "bar" in the URLs in the sundry .svn/ folders. All I want to do is commit my files with the new name. I could re-checkout the branch, but then I have no way to remember which files I changed, which is why I was using version control in the first place, and svn is so godawful at moving and renaming things. What do I need to do to: Have a "clean" copy of my "bar" svn branch? and, most importantly: Commit the changes I made?

• Batch convert Malformed PDFs to TIF on Linux

  I need to convert a multipage PDF to TIF, but it appears to be a malformed PDF provided by our client. I tried using ImageMagick and GhostScript, but they do not convert the file correctly. The result is only about 85-90% correct. The only thing I've found that appears to do the job is GIMP, but I can't find an example to use it via its Batch Processing methods for PDFs. • How to use batch rendering with an entity component system?

  I have an entity component system and a 2D rendering engine. Because I have a lot of repeating sprites (the entities are non-animated, the background is tile based) I would really like to use batch rendering to reduce calls to the drawing routine. What would be the best way to integrate this with an engtity system? I thought about creating and populating the sprite batche every frame update, but that will probably be very slow. A better way would be to add a reference to an entity's quad to the sprite batch at initialization, but that would mean that the entity factory has to be aware of the Rendering System or that the sprite batch has to be a component of some Cache entity. One case violates encapsulation pretty heavily, while the other forces a non-game object entity in the entity system, which I am not sure I like a lot. As for engine, I am using Love2D (Love2D website) and FEZ ( FEZ website) as entity system(so everything is in Lua). I am more interested in a generic pattern of how to properly implement that rather than a language/library specific solution. Thanks in advance!

• How do I improve terrain rendering batch counts using DirectX?

  We have determined that our terrain rendering system needs some work to minimize the number of batches being transferred to the GPU in order to improve performance. I'm looking for suggestions on how best to improve what we're trying to accomplish. We logically split our terrain mesh into smaller grid cells which are 32x32 world units. Each cell has meta data that dictates the four 256x256 textures that are used for spatting along with the alpha blend data, shadow, and light mappings. Each cell contains 81 vertices in a 9x9 grid. Presently, we examine each cell and determine the four textures that are being used to spat the cell. We combine that geometry with any other cell that perhaps uses the same four textures regardless of spat order. If the spat order for a cell differs, the blend map is adjusted so that the spat order is maintained the same as other like cells and blending happens in the right order too. But even with this batching approach, it isn't uncommon when looking out across an area of open terrain to have between 1200-1700 batch count depending upon how frequently textures differ or have different texture blends are between cells. We are only doing frustum culling presently. So using texture spatting, are there other alternatives that can reduce the batch count and allow rendering to be extremely performance-friendly even under DirectX9c? We considered using texture atlases since we're targeting DirectX 9c & older OpenGL platforms but trying to repeat textures using atlases and shaders result in seam artifacts which we haven't been able to eliminate with the exception of disabling mipmapping. Disabling mipmapping results in poor quality textures from a distance. How have others batched together terrain geometry such that one could spat terrain using various textures, minimizing batch count and texture state switches so that rendering performance isn't negatively impacted?

• How to batch remove spamming users and pages they created on MediaWiki?

  I'm trying to clean up a MediaWiki instance which has been subjected to spamming and vandalism for a period of time. The current status is that there are a large number of users which only created spam pages but typically not altered legitimate pages. And there is only < 10 users which I know are legitimate users and created a small number of legitimate pages. Abstractly, my idea of fixing the messy situation is to find the complete list of users that are not in that small set of legitimate users, and use RenameUser extension to rename them all to a Spammer user, and use Nuke extension to mass delete all pages it created. Any practical advice on how to proceed? Since there are hundreds of spammer users, how do I effectively rename them? It seems Renameuser extension does not support automated batch renaming of users by allowing users to be renamed with a list or file.
