  • Why 2 GB memory limit when running in 64 bit Windows ?

    I'm a member in a team that develop a Delphi application. The memory requirements are huge. 500 MB is normal but in some cases it got out of memory exception. The memory allocated in that cases is typically between 1000 - 1700 MB. We of course want 64-bits compiler but that won't happen now (and if it happens we also must convert to unicode, but that is another story...). My question is why is there a 2 GB memory limit per process when running in a 64 bit environment. The pointer is 32 bit so I think 4 GB would be the right limit. I use Delphi 2007.

  • Delphi constants and references

    I want to pass constant references to functions in delphi, so I am sure that the referenced object won't change and to save time and memory. So I want to declare a function like function foo(var const Value : Bar) : Boolean; however this is not allowed. I thought constant values would be automatically sent as references. However I found out that it is not the case (getting the address of an object before sending it to the function gives me $12F50C and the address of the same object inside the function is $12F564) What can I do to send constant references?

  • What should I do or don't do to avoid Delphi "push dword" bug.

    I found that Delphi 5 generates invalid assembly code in specific cases. I can't understand in what cases in general. The example below produces access violation since a very strange optimization occurs. For a byte in a record or array Delphi generates push dword [...], pop ebx, mov .., bl that works correctly if there are data after this byte (we need at least three to push dword correctly), but fails if the data is inaccessible. I emulated the strict boundaries here with win32 Virtual* functions Specifically the error occurs when the last byte from the block accessed inside FeedBytesToClass procedure.     In my multithread application I use TThread.suspend and TThread.resume Since moving my application to Delphi 2010 I get the following warring message [DCC Warning] xxx.pas(277): W1000 Symbol ‘Resume’ is deprecated If Resume is deprecated what should be used in place? EDIT 1: I use the Resume command to start the thread - as it is Created with 'CreateSuspended' set to True and Suspend before I terminate the thread. EDIT 2: Here is a link the delphi 2010 manual

    I need to code a simple form application and I want to make it easy to deploy (without installing libraries or dependencies), I don't want to use visual studio cpp or csharp because clr apps compile with .net frameworks and I have no much experience with mfc and dialogs. So I was wondering which libraries does a simple delphi vcl forms app (those using TForm) use, because I've never had to install anything to run simple delphi apps.

    I've taken the liberty to test both SCOM 2007 and Zenoss and found the following: SCOM 2007 Pros: Great MS Windows server monitoring and reporting In-depth configuration and easily integrates into a "MS datacenter" Cons: limited network device monitoring support (without 3rd party plugins) expensive difficult learning curve Zenoss Pros: Open Source (free) decent server monitoring for Windows, great monitoring for Linux decent network device monitoring Cons: not as in-depth as SCOM (for Windows at least) So my question to you folks is this: Given the above, and given that I'm trying to monitor 55 Windows servers, 1 Linux server, 2 ESX servers, and Juniper equipment...which would you recommend?

I have read that there are ways to do this on the server side, but what methods could be used by me to facilitate this on my end?     I have Office 2007 32 bit installed. I want to install 2010 64 bit. I understand there is no direct upgrade. I have to uninstall and then install 2010. Is there a way to save all my settings, account info etc. before uninstalling? There was a settings migration wizard in Office 2003, it seems gone from 2007.

    a outlook form "c:\meinevorlage.oft" , created with office 2003 can not be opened directly in office 2007. Error: not familiar with the outlook form template .... how can I still open this template directly on computer with office 2007-installations? important: the outlook-form have to be opened by direct selecting and not via outlook-file-new, or as an hyperlink etc. heartfelt thanks in advance.

  • ActiveX controls with old Delphi versions

    I'm testing a non visual ActiveX control based on a registered .ocx which I import into Delphi using the provided wizard. Then, I simply put the generated component on the main form of a new VCL application. Under old Delphi versions (D5 and D2007), when i launch the application, this raise an AV during the component initialization. with Delphi 2009 : no problem, the application starts smoothly. My questions are : Are there known enhancements of ActiveX management in recent Delphi versions which can explain this difference ? Can I suspect a bug in the ActiveX control, or can I consider the origin of the problem is from old Delphi versions ? I need to use this component (if tests OK) in D2007. Do you think that it is possible to correct the AV problem under D2007 by modifying the D2007 generated .tlb file (for example by trying to use the D2009 generated one) PS: the ActiveX control is not named, because my question is a general question about Delphi and ActiveX, not about a specific ActiveX control.

    A very simple situation. I'm working on an application in Delphi 2007 which is often compiled as 'Release' but still runs under a debugger. And occasionally it will run under SilkTest too, for regression testing. While this is quite fun I want to do something special... I want to detect if my application is running within a debugger/regression-tester and if that's the case, I want the application to know which tool is used! (Thus, when the application crashes, I could report this information in it's error report.) Any suggestions, solutions?

    How can I save all of the images/figures in a Word 2007 document as separate files? Right now I have to save each one separately. And I can't even save them from within Word -- I have to copy them to PowerPoint and then save them since there doesn't seem to be any way to save them from within Word. [Note that the trick shown at TechRepublic (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/itdojo/?p=135) does not work. It doesn't work because all of my images are cropped and this trick produces uncropped images.]

    I have an Outlook 2007 Add-in in VSTO 2005 SE that allows users to save e-mails into our document management system. From within our system users are able to open e-mails they have previously saved. However, when doing so I need to try and prevent them from saving them again. I am trying to figure out how to determine if the Mailitem being opened is coming from the Outlook e-mail client or from an external source. I know that normally the EntryId Property of the Mailitem is null or empty string when a Mailitem has not been previously saved in Outlook, however, it seems like when a Mailitem is being opened from within our system the EntryID is not null.

  • IUSR account and SCCM 2007 R3 agent

    I recently started working with SCCM and rolling the agent out with machine having IIS 7.x installed.  I ran into issues where the SCCM agent wouldn't install.  The errors mostly were 0x80004005 and 1603, another key one I found was Return Value 3 in the SCCM setup log.  During the troubleshooting, I found a cool utility called WMI Diag  WMI diag is a VBS script that reads the local WMI store and helps diagnose issue.  Anyone working with SMS or SCCM should keep this handy tool around.  The good thing my particular case WMI was healthy.  The issue turned out I changed the Anonymous Authentication module from using the IUSR account to inherit Application Pool identity.  Once we temporarily switched back to IUSR, installed the agent, then switched the setting back to inherit application pool identity, the SCCM agent installed with no issues. I'm not sure why switching back to the IUSR account solved my issue, if I find out I'll update the post.  More information on IIS 7 builtin accounts http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/140/understanding-built-in-user-and-group-accounts-in-iis-7 Specify an application pool identity  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771170(WS.10).aspx SCCM resources (Config Mgr Setup  / Deployment forums) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrsetup/threads http://www.myitforum.com (the best independent SCCM community resource) Hope this helps. Sadly I’m going to have to turn to something modern as the virtual processor is no longer up to scratch, as I found when trying to install Windows 8.1 evaluation. In the past this would have been a Blue Screen but they’re handled differently in Windows 8, usually with a frowning emoticon. 0x0000005D means UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR and the solution would be to enable No-Execute Memory Protection in the BIOS. Virtual PC is ancient so the AMI BIOS has no such setting on any of the menus. Off now to find a virtualisation product I like.
