• Why aren't double quotes and backslashes allowed in strings in the JSON standard?

  If I run this in a JavaScript console in Chrome or Firebug, it works fine. JSON.parse('"\u0027"') // Escaped single-quote But if I run either of these 2 lines in a Javascript console, it throws an error. JSON.parse('"\u0022"') // Escaped double-quote JSON.parse('"\u005C"') // Escaped backslash RFC 4627 section 2.5 seems to imply that \ and " are allowed characters as long as they're properly escaped. The 2 browsers I've tried this in don't seem to allow it, however. Is there something I'm doing wrong here or are they really not allowed in strings? I've also tried using \" and \\ in place of \u0022 and \u005C respectively. I feel like I'm just doing something very wrong, because I find it hard to believe that JSON would not allow these characters in strings, especially since the specification doesn't seem to mention anything that I could find saying they're not allowed.

  It is said, javascript clears a variable from memory after its being referenced last. just for the sake of this question i created a JS file with only one variable; //file start //variable defined var a=["Hello"] //refenence to that variable alert(a[0]); // //file end no further reference to that variable, so i expect javascript to clear varaible 'a' Now i just ran this page and then opened firebug and ran this code alert(a[0]); Now this alerts the value of variable, If the statement "Javascript clears a variable after there is no further reference it" is true how come alert() shows its value. Is it because all variable defined in global context become properties of window object, and since even after the execution file window objects exist so does it properties.

• How to diganose an unlogged Error 500 on Apache?

  We are running a very simple Symfony script, that randomly returns an Error 500. The system administrator says he can't find any trace of an Error 500 on the error logs, however using Curl or Firebug, it is obvious that an Error 500 is being returned. The script simply parses a POST request submitted to an URL on our server. We already checked for performance, memory etc but nothing seems to be the problem. How is this possible? We already enabled all debugging, logging, on Apache, PHP, etc and nothing.

• Content-type not working in PHP

  Hi everyone, I have some issues with a PHP file that is not working properly. The Content-type does not get recieved by any browser at all. Firebug interprets the file as text/html instead of css. Here's the file : <?php header('Content-Type: text/css; charset=UTF-8'); error_reporting(E_ALL | E_STRICT); ini_set('display_errors', 'On'); /* CSS goes on from here */ I tested to put a row with echo 'TEST'; before the header line, and was expecting to see the classic "headers already sent" error, but nothing appears!   So I have a DOM document that looks essentially like this <categories> <category id="1"/> <category id="2"/> </categories> This is how the document previews in Firebug, as I would expect. However, when I POST this to the server, I get <categories> <CATEGORY id="1"/> <CATEGORY id="2"/> </categories> Indeed, doc.documentElement.firstChild.nodeName returns "CATEGORY". The nodes are added using jQuery.append('<category/>'). Why are the child tags returned in all caps?

• how can I override an anonymous javascript function attached to an eventlistener?

  I found that a website does somewhat sneaky things. When you hover over a link, it shows you the real URL. WHen you click on it, it uses the click/mousedown event to rewrite the URL. I want to override that behaviour in firefox, So I fired up firebug to see what it does. On a mouse click, it executes a function called window.tgs. Easy, I thought. I can override this function. My first attempt was to do get the element via getELementsByTagName(), and then element.removeEventListener("click",window.tgs, false); To my surprise, this did nothing. I tried redefining window.tgs window.tgs = function() { return true; }; that did not do anything either. I am not a JS expert. Your insights appreciated thanks Sid

• How to determine what in my script is blocking my HTML rendering?

  I have a web application that uses quite a bit of JavaScript. When the page loads, it's very clear visually that something is blocking the rendering of a particular portion of the web site. This portion is generated by a Tabber Tabify JavaScript library. How can I determine what's blocking the HTML rendering specifically so that I can modify my code to prevent this blocking? Can I use Firebug, or some other tool, to walk through my HTML/JavaScript to determine where the HTML rendering is being blocked and if so, how? UPDATE: YSlow gives my web-application a score of "A" and Page Speed give a score of 94/100. UPDATE 2: The live site is linked below. http://www.uptownelite.com/index.uncompressed.html?city=Dallas,TX What I'm specifically referring too is the actual Tabs themselves being rendering (and NOT the panel content inside the tab panes). It seems strange to me that the Tab headings themselves are taking so long to generate on the first (empty cache) page load.

• ASP.NET MVC 2 - ViewData empty after POST

  I don't really know where to look for an error... the situation: I have an ASPX view which contains a form and a few input's, and when I click the submit button everything is POST'ed to one of my ASP.NET MVC actions. When I set a breakpoint there, it is hit correctly. When I use FireBug to see what is sent to the action, I correctly see data1=abc&data2=something&data3=1234. However, nothing is arriving in my action method. ViewData is empty, there is no ViewData["data1"] or anything else that would show that data arrived. How can this be? Where can I start looking for the error?

• Selenium fails to find component after dom update (reRender)

  I'm testing a richfaces application with selenium. It works fine, unless I use reRender. (for those unfamiliar with richfaces - whenever an ajax request finished, parts of the DOM are updated/chagned/removed). So, after a reRender selenium (the IDE at least) fails to locate the elements which were within the reRendered area. Both FireBug and WebDeveloper locate the elements, and on "view source" the elements are there. So, is there a way to tell selenium to update its DOM "knowledge" with the latest changes? Firefox 3.5.6, latest version of Selenium IDE.

• Strange centering problem in Firefox and IE8

  The navigation bar on my site http://hungryathome.net doesn't center properly on Firefox and IE8 Standards mode. It centers properly in IE7 Compatability mode and in Chrome. What's odd is that setting a Margin on the div (id="navlinks") to 4px or more will make it center properly. Any less will result in it being slightly off-center. I changed the values back and forth in Firebug and it's confusing the heck out of me. Any explanation for why that's happening?

  the font of the content of my facebook app keeps getting italicized even when i've removed the italics from the css file. if i make minor changes in the css file and upload it to the server, the firebug shows the unedited previous css file and hence, the app keeps showing unformatted content. what exactly is going wrong here? i made a new css file and copied the contents of the previous css exactly as it was, and i linked it in all the files which require css. but when i upload these files to the server, facebook canvas doesn't show any css at all. i replaced the css filename with the previous one, and it works. why is this?

• google maps everytime fails to place some markers on the map

  hello! im trying to place like 130/140 markers on a custom google map. i inject the map with jquery and gmaps (http://gmap.nurtext.de/) everytime, at random (not related to specific markers) a lots of markers are not shown. firebug report this error: a is null and this error comes from this file: http://maps.gstatic.com/intl/it_ALL/mapfiles/285c/maps2.api/main.js if i refresh the page...some other markers are "hidden" and other ones are shown. anyone had this problem/can help me or suggest another safe way to show all markers? thanks a lot! • How does twitter server get to know single tweet ID from URL fragment segment?

  Each tweet has a single URL such as http://twitter.com/#!/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720. The tweet identification (/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720) is in the URL fragment segment which is not actually sent to server. Originally, I thought it works this way: The URL response doesn't have this tweet specific info. It is JavaScript module that extracts tweet id from current browser URL and fetch tweet payload with AJAX. The page content is then updated with the tweet payload. To my surprise, it is doesn't work this way! With Firebug, you can view that response of http://twitter.com/#!/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720 has tweet payload "10 Signs of a True Gentleman" text in inline JavaScript. The tweet payload is not fetched by another AJAX. So, how does Twitter server get to know the expected tweet ID even it is in URL fragment segment?

• Inconsistent Loading Times for GeoRSS Overlay Between Firefox and IE

  I have a very simple page built to display a map and overlay a line based on points in a GeoRSS XML file. Here is the publicly accessible file. http://68.178.230.189/georssimport.html Firefox is loading in about 5 secs, which is expected because there are a lot of points to map, but IE (6 & 7) is taking upwards of 45 secs to a minute.   I have multiple notes with class=.note and unique id each inside a div. On click of edit I grab the id, show hidden form #noteditor and hide all notes. I am using the load function to get the response (using codeigniter so url does work) and input result in the editorfrorm Textarea id = upnote... Firebug response looks ok and I have tried to inject into a div and this works fine, BUT getting this injto the text area is causing me some headaches. There is also the chance that i am going around this a convoluted way due to my limited knowledge...   I have the following HTML. <ul> <li> <a>asdas</a> </li> </ul> In my CSS stylesheet I have general settings for the a tag, and several hundered lines later settings for ul li a. Like this: a:link { color: red; } ... ul li a { color:blue; } Firebug tells me, that first the color:blue is loaded, and afterwards overriden by color:red So far I've always thought, that the order of loading css files and the order of style inside a single css file tell the browser how html elements should be formatted. Unfortunately I'm now experiencing it vice versa. So tell me, how must I correct my style to achieve the a tag inside the li to be rendered blue and not red?

  Im using facebook javaSDK for my website and I have a weird problem. When I load the website with "internet explorer" it always runs fine. When I load the website with firefox it always loads TWICE, and when I use chrome the JSDK sometimes loads once and sometimes not loads at all , giving me the error "Uncaught ReferenceError: FB is not defined ". I tried using asynchronous loading for the SDK but still the same problem. btw I have firebug on firefox, could that be the reason the JSDK loads twice? Thanks

• Getting value from key pair value into appended property using jQuery

  How do I get the value from a key pair value into the rel property of an anchor tag? When I split the code to put the value in the correct place it doesn't work, the end of the a tag would appear on screen instead value wouldn't be applied. When I look at the resulting code in console in Firebug the rel and href swapped order so the rel is first. The 'key' should be and is in the correct location but the 'value' needs to be applied to the rel attribute. The first update / draw works fine - but any subsequent changes to the variables (the start and end date) do not show up - even though the json pulled from the server seems to be correct (according to firebug). • Getting all the cookies including those from google analytics from one webpage

  Hello! I use apache 4 java libs for http get connections. I get all cookies from 2 other pages. But one other webpage contains google analytics cookies(utma,utmz...) and classic session id cookie (checked with firebug). When i try to get the cookies i only get sesson id cookie. Is there any trick to get all the cookies from java in connection with google analytics? If i want to make a http post, it seems that i have to send google analytics cookies too. I can copy my code if somebody wants, but it works on other pages(for printing cookies). Thank you

• Using new Image().src for click tracking

  I am attempting to figure out why this click tracker isn't working. The code was written by another developer so I am not entirely sure if this ever did work. function trackSponsor(o, p) { (new Image()).src = PATH_BASE + 'click/' + p + '/' + o + "?_cache=" + (+(new Date())); return false; } From what I can gather is that when this function is called it 'creates a new image' to fire a php script asynchronously. According to Firebug, the request is made however it is 'aborted' ~30ms in. The odd thing is that it will 'sometimes' work as in 1 in every 10+ regardless of the browser. I would much rather fix this so that it works instead of re-writing it as an ajax request. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Javscript filter vs map problem

  As a continuation of my min/max across an array of objects I was wondering about the performance comparisons of filter vs map. So I put together a test on the values in my code as was going to look at the results in FireBug. This is the code: var _vec = this.vec; min_x = Math.min.apply(Math, _vec.filter(function(el){ return el["x"]; })); min_y = Math.min.apply(Math, _vec.map(function(el){ return el["x"]; })); The mapped version returns the correct result. However the filtered version returns NaN. Breaking it out, stepping through and finally inspecting the results, it would appear that the inner function returns the x property of _vec but the actual array returned from filter is the unfiltered _vec. I believe my usage of filter is correct - can anyone else see my problem?
