  • Up-to-date Comparison of High-Speed USB Flash Drives

    - by Zoredache
I am looking for comparison of the performance of USB flash drives. I have found several older comparisons, but I am trying to find a more up-to-date comparisons that apply to the larger storage sizes (32-128GB). I can try looking up the specs of various drives, but vendors have been known to exaggerate, or use numbers that are on accurate in tests that do not reflect actual usage. I was hoping to find 3rd party site which had perform testing.

  • usb flash drives how to fix ?

    - by madyotto
Hi all I have recently purchased some so called 256gb Kingston drives that are fake I used a program called check flash and few other to check for dead sectors and read speed and read and write speed the results are as follows: they were reading at 1.35 mbps at best they read and wrote at 0.95 mbps and had a hell of a lot of dead sectors so what I ask is: Is there a way to drop the size to improve speed Is there any other way to improve speed How can I stop the device from addressing the dead sectors Any help will be much appreciated ALL THE THANKS (MADYOTTO)

  • When and why will an OS initialise memory to 0xCD, 0xDD, etc. on malloc/free/new/delete?

    - by LeopardSkinPillBoxHat
I know that the OS will sometimes initialise memory with certain patterns such as 0xCD and 0xDD. What I want to know is when and why this happens. When Is this specific to the compiler used? Do malloc/new and free/delete work in the same way with regard to this? Is it platform specific? Will it occur on other operating systems, such as Linux or VxWorks? Why My understanding is this only occurs in Win32 debug configuration, and it is used to detect memory overruns and to help the compiler catch exceptions. Can you give any practical examples as to how this initialisation is useful? I remember reading something (maybe in Code Complete 2) that it is good to initialise memory to a known pattern when allocating it, and certain patterns will trigger interrupts in Win32 which will result in exceptions showing in the debugger. How portable is this?

  • Memory Troubles with UIImagePicker

    - by Dan Ray
I'm building an app that has several different sections to it, all of which are pretty image-heavy. It ties in with my client's website and they're a "high-design" type outfit. One piece of the app is images uploaded from the camera or the library, and a tableview that shows a grid of thumbnails. Pretty reliably, when I'm dealing with the camera version of UIImagePickerControl, I get hit for low memory. If I bounce around that part of the app for a while, I occasionally and non-repeatably crash with "status:10 (SIGBUS)" in the debugger. On low memory warning, my root view controller for that aspect of the app goes to my data management singleton, cruises through the arrays of cached data, and kills the biggest piece, the image associated with each entry. Thusly: - (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning { // Releases the view if it doesn't have a superview. [super didReceiveMemoryWarning]; UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Low Memory Warning" message:@"Cleaning out events data" delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"All right then." otherButtonTitles:nil]; [alert show]; [alert release]; NSInteger spaceSaved; DataManager *data = [DataManager sharedDataManager]; for (Event *event in data.eventList) { spaceSaved += [(NSData *)UIImagePNGRepresentation(event.image) length]; event.image = nil; spaceSaved -= [(NSData *)UIImagePNGRepresentation(event.image) length]; } NSString *titleString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Saved %d on event images", spaceSaved]; for (WondrMark *mark in data.wondrMarks) { spaceSaved += [(NSData *)UIImagePNGRepresentation(mark.image) length]; mark.image = nil; spaceSaved -= [(NSData *)UIImagePNGRepresentation(mark.image) length]; } NSString *messageString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"And total %d on event and mark images", spaceSaved]; NSLog(@"%@ - %@", titleString, messageString); // Relinquish ownership any cached data, images, etc that aren't in use. } As you can see, I'm making a (poor) attempt to eyeball the memory space I'm freeing up. I know it's not telling me about the actual memory footprint of the UIImages themselves, but it gives me SOME numbers at least, so I can see that SOMETHING'S happening. (Sorry for the hamfisted way I build that NSLog message too--I was going to fire another UIAlertView, but realized it'd be more useful to log it.) Pretty reliably, after toodling around in the image portion of the app for a while, I'll pull up the camera interface and get the low memory UIAlertView like three or four times in quick succession. Here's the NSLog output from the last time I saw it: 2010-05-27 08:55:02.659 EverWondr[7974:207] Saved 109591 on event images - And total 1419756 on event and mark images wait_fences: failed to receive reply: 10004003 2010-05-27 08:55:08.759 EverWondr[7974:207] Saved 4 on event images - And total 392695 on event and mark images 2010-05-27 08:55:14.865 EverWondr[7974:207] Saved 4 on event images - And total 873419 on event and mark images 2010-05-27 08:55:14.969 EverWondr[7974:207] Saved 4 on event images - And total 4 on event and mark images 2010-05-27 08:55:15.064 EverWondr[7974:207] Saved 4 on event images - And total 4 on event and mark images And then pretty soon after that we get our SIGBUS exit. So that's the situation. Now my specific questions: THE time I see this happening is when the UIPickerView's camera iris shuts. I click the button to take the picture, it does the "click" animation, and Instruments shows my memory footprint going from about 10mb to about 25mb, and sitting there until the image is delivered to my UIViewController, where usage drops back to 10 or 11mb again. If we make it through that without a memory warning, we're golden, but most likely we don't. Anything I can do to make that not be so expensive? Second, I have NSZombies enabled. Am I understanding correctly that that's actually preventing memory from being freed? Am I subjecting my app to an unfair test environment? Third, is there some way to programmatically get my memory usage? Or at least the usage for a UIImage object? I've scoured the docs and don't see anything about that.

  • Reading php generated XML in flash?

    - by AdonisSMU
Here is part 1 of our problem (Loading a dynamically generated XML file as PHP in Flash). Now we were able to get Flash to read the XML file, but we can only see the Flash render correctly when tested(test movie) from the actual Flash program. However, when we upload our files online to preview the Flash does not render correctly, missing some vital information(thumbnails, titles, video etc..). Here is a link to the Flash file using a manually created XML file (The Flash renders correctly): http://www.gaban.com/stackoverflow/TEN_xml.html Here is the path to the manually created XML file: http://dev.touchstorm.com/ten_hpn_admin2/client_user2.xml Now here is the link to the Flash file using the PHP generated XML file (Renders incomplete): http://www.gaban.com/stackoverflow/TEN_php.html Path to the PHP generated file (exactly the same as the manually created one): http://dev.touchstorm.com/ten_hpn_admin2/client_user.php?id=2 Additional information: The SWF file exists on Domain 1 The XML & PHP file both exists on Domain 2 And the HTML file with the embed code lies on Domain 3 Wondering if this could be a crossdomain issue? We have one of those files in place on Domain 1 & 2 where we have access too, however for Domain 3 we can't have a crossdomain.xml file there. Here is the PHP code: $xml = new XMLWriter(); $xml->openMemory(); $xml->setIndent(true); $xml->setIndentString("\t"); $xml->startDocument(); $xml->startElement('data'); $xml->startElement('config'); $xml->startElement('hex'); $xml->writeCData('0x' . $widget_profile['background_color']); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('width'); $xml->writeCData($widget_profile['width']); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('height'); $xml->writeCData($widget_profile['height']); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('fullscreen'); $xml->writeCData('false'); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('special'); $xml->writeCData('false'); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('specialName'); $xml->writeCData('Tools & Offers'); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('specialLink'); $xml->writeCData('http://bettycrocker.com'); $xml->endElement(); $xml->startElement('client'); $xml->writeCData($widget_profile['site_url']); $xml->endElement(); $xml->endElement(); if (count($widget_content) > 0) { foreach ($widget_content as $tab) { $xml->startElement('tab'); $xml->writeAttribute('id', $tab['tabname']); if (count($tab['video']) > 0) { foreach ($tab['video'] as $video) { $video_sql = "select VID, flvdoname, title from video where VID='" . $video . "'"; $video_result = $howdini->query($video_sql); if ($video_result->rowCount() > 0) { foreach ($video_result as $video_row) { $video_row['flvdoname'] = substr($video_row['flvdoname'], 35, -4); $xml->startElement('vid'); $xml->writeAttribute('flv', $video_row['flvdoname']); $xml->writeAttribute('thumb', 'http://www.howdini.com/thumb/' . $video_row['VID'] . '.jpg'); $xml->writeAttribute('title', $video_row['title']); $xml->endElement(); } } } } $xml->endElement(); } } $xml->endElement(); $xml->endDocument(); header('Content-Type: text/xml; charset=UTF-8'); echo $xml->flush(); Thanks in advance for any answers! EDIT: I have included the change and now Firebug sees the XML. Now it's just not seeing the swf file but I can see the swf file in other parts of the page.

  • WmiPrvSE memory leak on Windows 2008 *R2*

    - by MichaelGG
I've seen references on Windows 2008 to WmiPrvSE leaks, but nothing about Windows 2008 R2. We're running R2 on top of Hyper-V (2008). We are also running NSClient++ for monitoring from opsview. Over time, WmiPrvSE.exe starts to use a lot of memory, causing memory alert issues (less than 10% free). VM has 2GB, WmiPrvSE consumes up to 500-600MB before I kill it. Killing the process doesn't seem to have any negative effect; it starts up again and I haven't noticed any problems. But after a day or two, it's back in the same situation. Any ideas on what to do? Resource Monitor doesn't show any Disk or Network IO by WmiPrvSE.exe. Just slowly climbing private memory... Edited to add: We aren't running clustering, or Windows System Resource Manager. The only regular WMI user I can guess is NSClient++, but we don't seem to have this problem on other servers.

  • MPMoviePlayerController on large videos causes massive memory spike, and a level 1 memory warning

    - by Shizam
When viewing images my application hums along nicely with low memory consumption, once I try to watch a video using MPMoviePlayerController memory usage spikes way up, dwarfing the previous memory graph and if I play the video it causes a 'memory warning. Level=1' message. The video files (mp4) aren't even that big, 40MB or so, and it doesn't matter if I play the file streamed from a URL or loaded from a local file, actually the memory spike is even worse if I try to stream it. Here is the code I use to create the player: if (_photo.videoPath != nil) { _movieViewController=[[MPMoviePlayerViewController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:_photo.videoPath]]; } else { _movieViewController=[[MPMoviePlayerViewController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL URLWithString:_photo.videoURL]]; } [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(videoMetaListener:) name:MPMovieDurationAvailableNotification object:_movieViewController.moviePlayer]; _movieViewController.moviePlayer.scalingMode=MPMovieScalingModeAspectFit; _movieViewController.moviePlayer.shouldAutoplay = YES; _movieViewController.moviePlayer.controlStyle = MPMovieControlStyleEmbedded; Anybody else running into issues playing video? Also I checked for leaks, there are none reported.

  • Throttling Postfix memory

    - by teddybeard
I have a VPS on 1and1 similar to this configuration (512MB, burst up to 2GB). I run a web service where I crawl the web and notify my users through email and sms when a certain online data feed changes. When I send the emails out, I just have PHP loop through the recipients list and send the emails out using the mail() function. Whenever I try to send a large volume of these messages out, my server starts acting funny. I can't even run an 'ls' sometimes because the shell tells me it 'cannot allocate memory'. The shell is unusable and yet my website is being served up fine. • Fastest Strategy for Drawing Flash Particles

    - by user146543
I am wondering what the fastest approach might be for using Flash/AS3 to render a 2D point plot (sonar lofargram) ; basically screens full of tiny 2D dots using Flash as fast as possible. Any suggestions on where to start? Is Flash capable of displaying 10's of thousands of 2D points (or more) with an acceptable fps?

I have developed a screen saver for MAC OS X. Screen saver plays flash files. Whene I run screen saver on display resolution higher than 1300 X 1000 then flash files play very jerky / laggy. When I run it in low resolution then files play fine.Even flash files are playing fine in desktop application. This problem is more on 10.6 Snow Leopard. I am unable to find out the reason whether it is OS screensaver engine problem or flash files problem. I know rendering increases on high resolution but there should be solution for this problem

  • Playing flash (.flv) videos on the web in a way that portable devices can view them

    - by Evan
A friend of mine has created a movie for my site, it's in .flv format. I've heard of the popular flash player called flowplayer, but I have a bad feeling such a player will not work on the ipad and other devices which do not support flash. Is there a way to play a video in the flash format through a non-flash player so that the content can be viewed on all devices? I'm open to any ideas. Perhaps I may even need to convert the video to another format somehow. Thanks for any help, Evan

  • Export SWC from Flash and Access Child from Flex

    - by php html
I'm creating an actionscript project in Flex Builder. I succeed to export from Flash a SWC file, and to use it succesfully in Flex. I have a good programming background and Flex looks very simple for me, but I have difficult times in flash. I'm trying to achieve something that might be very simple(not for me of course): I create a simple shape in Flash, convert it to symbol. Then I create a TextField. The I select both the elements and convert them to another symbol, and Export it as a movieclip in swc. In flex I want to change the value from the textfield. How should I do? I'm trying to do: var t:ExportedMC = new ExportedMC(); t....(what should I write here) As I mentioned when I open flash I feel like an elephant in a porcelain store. I have 2 questions here: - how to assign a name to the textfield in flash? I'm using CS4. - how to access it as a child in flex?

  • How can HTML5 "replace" Flash?

    - by Kassini
A topic of debate that's seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5. There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash. I do not develop software that runs in a browser, so my (limited) understanding is: HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser. The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification. Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics. It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that's available as a plug-in to most common browsers. Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible from a technical/coding point-of-view that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)? Please no opinionated arguments - just technical facts.

  • Can somebody explain in a few sentences how these technologies relate: Flex, Flash, Air, ActionScrip

    - by SimpaCar
I've read about each of these but I still don't understand how they all inter-operate, which are competing technologies, or even really what each of them is distinctly. Flash, Air, Flex... Are these all "containers"/JVM-like runtime environments, in which ActionScript code runs? SWF,FLV,AIR... Are these competing file formats which a Flash, Air or Flex runtime environment executes? ActionScript is a C-like language which compiles to SWF, FLV or AIR files? Sorry, with all the marketing around these terms, some of which are used interchangeably, I am quite lost. Suppose I wanted to write an AIR application... what would that entail? Writing ActionScript, compiling it to a SWF, and then installing the AIR runtime to execute it? How's that different than Flash? If I want to play AIR applications do I need a separate AIR runtime or does Flash execute AIR apps?

  • Custom flash mp3 player stopping in the middle of playing audio on windows nt ie6 system

    - by Charlotte Moller
We have used a custom MP3 flash player for a lot of years on our website without any issues, but recently, a client of ours is reporting that the audio is playing for several seconds and then stopping. When they refresh the page or click play in the player again the audio plays fine. We are puzzled as to what could be causing this issue after this running successfully for our clients for so many years. The client system is Windows NT running IE6. Does anyone have any idea what could cause the audio to behave this way? Could audio drivers or the version of flash cause problems? We do not have flash programmers on our team so we are not even sure where to start looking within the flash code of the player. Any ideas?

  • How to stop flash content shine-through JQuery UI Dialog in FF Windows

    - by DEfusion
I'm using the jQuery UI dialog box, in IE & FF on Windows I'm getting underlying flash content shining through the dialog box. I resolved this on IE by enabling the bgiframe option on the jQuery dialog window and changing the bgiframe script to apply to any windows browsers, however I'm still getting the shine-through on FF. Note that I can't know exactly where the flash content will be showing as it is usually flash widgets that users have added to pages, although I have thought about hiding the flash content temporarily while displaying the dialog box - is this the only option left to me?

  • Flex Error #1014: Class flash.net::NetStreamPlayOptions

    - by evilpenguin
I have a pure ActionScript project. I'm using Flex Builder on a Mac, Flex SDK 3.4 and I've even added the playerglobal.swc from the Flash folder to the project's library path. I get autocomplete when I add import flash.net.NetStreamPlayOptions; import flash.net.NetStreamPlayTransitions; But when I run the movie, I get: VerifyError: Error #1014: Class flash.net::NetStreamPlayOptions could not be found. I don't get it.. What must I do to use those classes?
