  • Reduce "Metafile" memory usage?

    My work computer (Windows 7 64-bit) spends a lot of time swapping memory when I switch between programs. This surprises me since I have 4 GB of RAM, and the programs I use aren't particularly RAM hungry (Outlook, Emacs, p4win, Firefox, various build tools). I downloaded RAMMap, and it shows over a gigabyte of memory used by "Metafile". From the Sysinternals blog: Metafile is part of the system cache and consists of NTFS metadata. NTFS metadata includes the MFT as well as the other various NTFS metadata files. ... In the MFT each file attribute record takes 1k and each file has at least one attribute record. Add to this the other NTFS metadata files and you can see why the Metafile category can grow quite large on servers with lots of files. So I understand what the "Metafile" data is... I work on large builds comprising hundreds of thousands of files (none are that big, but they add up to several gigabytes). My question is how can I reduce the amount of memory used by "Metafile"? I'm not actively using all those files at once, so why does Windows need to keep info in RAM? Restarting my machine every time I sync a new build is really annoying.

However, the apps persistently run in the Flash Player instead. This is causing no end of problems because of the flash player bug documented at https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-209. How can I make a project's apps run in the browser instead of the player?

  • A very strange problem related to Flash and Java

    Hello, I have created one simple program for showing webcam of the user. It works absolutely fine when i am running without integrating it in my java web application. But as soon as i copy paste the same files in Netbeans 6.8 and try to run it. My swf file is visible but the buttons in it are totally unclickable. I get the message of allow or deny showing webcam but the buttons are not clickable. It makes my application totally useless. I thought it's a minor issue but now it's getting on my nerves. I am trying it since 3 hours but didn't find any solution. I don't think anybody faced this issue till now that's why can't seem to find any thread in any forum on it in google. I am using Netbeans 6.8, Ubuntu, Glassfish V3 and JSF. Thanks in advance :). UPDATE:- It works fine on Windows XP. Then what can be the problem with Ubuntu? Any kind of permission rights that i need to give? 2nd UPDATE:- I think this is bug with Flash. I know you will find me funny but i am not. You can check out on your own if you don't trust me. Now, my question would be, can anybody tell me how do i set height and width of swf? I want it to be 600px width and 500px height. Even the style attribute doesn't work. Can i set height and width from within Flash? because without explicitly setting height and width, it looks very small. I think this should be very easy for all now. Thanks in advance :)

And I've tryed to use fiddler to do that, but I can't capture data comming from flash or going to flash. Is there a way to do that ?   • Edit PDF files dynamically from Flash or Flex

    I am planning to do a CD-ROM in either Flash or Flex, possibly using the Adobe AIR runtime. This CD interactive will have a bunch of forms on it for the user to fill out. After they fill in a form, they will have the option of saving or printing a PDF that is based on there information. I am trying to find a way of editing the content of the PDF in Flash, so when the user fills out the form, the application will fill in the PDF with there details from the form fields. Is this is possible? It would be great if there was some way of having template PDFs (either on the CD as there own files, or in a Flash library), then flash could come along and fill in the specific fields inside the PDF. Can Adobe AIR help me in any way here?

  • Upgrading memory in a laptop

    I'm a bit confused about all the memory types and various bus frequencies of modern consumer PCs. Requesting expert help on the subject. So far I'm confident that: I have an Asus X51L laptop with an unknown set of configuration options. The CPU in there supports PAE, so I still have a chance to extend the memory beyond 3GiB; and the upper limit of the system is 8GiB. (?) The laptop has two SODIMM slots, one of which is occupied by a 2GiB bank, and the other one is empty. dmidecode and lshw tools consistently state 533 Mhz frequency of the bank. The last one confuses me the most. I failed to find out characteristics of the northbridge in this laptop, and still can't figure out what DDR2 to seek for. Is it DDR2-1066? Or, rather, PC2-8500/PC2-8600? Wouldn't a DDR2-800 bank harm the system's performance? Which kind of modules should I look up in stores? Update: I have bought a 2 GiB DDR2-800 SODIMM, and it seams that the system can't handle 4 GiB of memory. When installed by itself in either slot, both new and old bank (which btw happens to be marked GDDR2-677) work just perfectly; i.e. any configuration resulting in 2 GiB works. When both banks are installed though (totalling in 4 GiB), the memcheck86 tool produces horrible artifacts and crashes, and system reboots; an Ubuntu system can be started and even logged into a Unity session, but the system reboots too in this case from even a minor RAM load. So it's pretty obvious to me now that this laptop doesn't support 4 GiB of RAM or more.

    Hi I am trying to host a flash object inside an CAxWindow, I have managed to insert a shockwaveflash (SWF) and its working fine. I am trying to find all available API's that are available in the flash ocx. I am unable to find any documentation for the functions in the IShockwaveFlash interface. I know that Adobe doesn't have a documentation for using flash in VC++ but I was wondering if anyone can point me to a place where I can find an UNOFFICIAL documentation for flash.ocx or code samples as the only API that I could find and I'm currently using is "PutMovie". Any help is appreciated...

    Hi All, Ideal situation/setup: A page containing 1 Flash movie and a separate div containing a few hyperlinks. These hyperlinks each have a unique class name like so: Copy code <ul> <li><a href="" class="randomname1"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname2"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname3"></a></li> <li><a href="" class="randomname4"></a></li> </ul> The Flash movie itself will contain 4 buttons. Clicking on one of these buttons should make the Flash communicate with Jquery/JS and tell it to highlight the specific classname. Ideas so far For the javascript, it would look like $(function() { function setClass(className) {$("."+className).css("background","red");} }); And in specific keyframes within Flash 1. button 1 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname1"); 1. button 2 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname2"); 1. button 3 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname3"); 1. button 4 ExternalInterface.call("setClass","randomname4"); The problem is that it is not really working well and i am not sure if i am making Flash communicate with JS properly.     When I publish a Flash file that contains any sound (such as a WAV file), I can choose the sound compression method (MP3, raw, ADPCM, etc.). My question is about the mp3 compression and it's licence. Flash gives me the option to compress a WAV file as mp3, but is the licence to use the mp3 format included? I have paid for a Flash licence, does it give the right to use mp3 in my SWF files freely or do I have to pay royalties to someone else?

  • Which tool should I use for finding out my memory allocation in Perl?

    I've slurped in a big file using File::Slurp but given the size of the file I can see that I must have it in memory twice or perhaps it's getting inflated by being turned into 16 bit unicode. How can I best diagnose that sort of a problem in Perl? The file I pulled in is 800mb in size and my perl process that's analysing that data has roughly 1.6gb allocated at runtime. I realise that I may be wrong about my reason for the problem but I'm not sure the most efficient way to prove/disprove my theory.

    Ok, here is the think. I have a very simple flash program code in AS3, inside this program there is a dynamic textfield html capable. Also i have a database were i will put some information. Each element in the database can be linked to other. For example, this database will contain tourist spots, and they can be related with others in the same database. Ramdom place 1 This interesting spot is near <link to="ramdo2">ramdom place2</link>. And so, so so... The information in the database is retrived by the flash application and it shows the text on the dynamic textfield. I need somehow to tell my flash application that have to be a link to other part of the database, so when the user click the link a function in flash call this new data. The database is a simple Mysql server, and the data is not yet in there, waiting for your suggestions of how to format it and develop the solution. Im a php developer too, so i can make a gateway in PHP to read the MySQL and then retrive some format to flash, an XML for example.

    It seems that there is a lot of information on memory leaks in IE and how web developers can avoid them, but I can't find much on avoiding leaks in FF. I've found lots of random tips on how end users can tweak their preferences, or tips for extension developers, but little on what I can do as a web developer to make sure my pages don't leak. Am I missing something? It seems lazy to just blame it on the user and say "you've got too many extensions". Or are the major patterns the same as in IE -- circular references and all that? Also, if anyone knows of any tools to troubleshoot leaks in FF, that would be great.     I'm running 4 java processes with the following command: java -Xmx256m -jar ... and the system has 8Gb memory under fedora 12. however it is apparently going into swap. how can that be if 4 x 256m = 1Gb ? EDIT: also, how can all 8Gb of memory be used with so little memory allocated to basically the only thing running? is it java not garbage collecting because the OS tells it it doesn't need to or what?   • Exiting full screen mode in Flash

    I am working on a flash game, that will be distributed as and EXE file. I would very much like the game to run full screen, which is not a problem, but I am struggling with replacing flash default behavior when escape is pressed. When escape is pressed I would like to display a custom menu asking the user if they want to exit the game or continue playing, not just exit full screen more. Is this possible in Flash?

  • Which to use - "operator new" or "operator new[]" - to allocate a block of raw memory in C++?

    My C++ program needs a block of uninitialized memory. In C I would use malloc() and later free(). In C++ I can either call ::operator new or ::operator new[] and ::operator delete or operator delete[] respectively later. Looks like both ::operator new and ::operator new[] have exactly the same signature and exactly the same behavior. The same for ::operator delete and ::operator delete[]. The only thing I shouldn't do is pairing operator new with operator delete[] and vice versa - undefined behavior. Other than that which pair do I choose and why?
