• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • Some Memory Slots Not Working on MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 Motherboard

  Short version of question: Does anyone have an MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard, who can confirm that all four memory slots work? Long version: Several months ago I bought an MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard at Newegg. At that point I installed an AMD A8-5500 processor and two sticks of Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3-1866 memory, and put it into my file server. I installed the RAM in slots 1 and 3, as directed in the manual, to enable dual-channel memory access. It seemed to work fine, so I bought a second identical mobo (which arrived dead, but was quickly replaced by Newegg) and set of RAM, installed an A10-5800K, and put that into my production Linux machine. Again, it seemed to work well. Eventually I happened to notice that on the server only 8 GB of RAM appeared in the BIOS. I tried each of the slots and memory modules individually and in various combinations. I even swapped processors with the production machine. The result was that putting memory in slots 1 and 2 worked (showing a total of 16 GB), but any memory in slots 3 or 4 was not recognized. However, all four memory slots in the production machine worked, and I confirmed this with both processors. I contacted MSI and arranged to ship the defective mobo back to them for replacement under warranty. I did not want my file server to be down in the interim, and I had another machine I wanted to upgrade, so I bought a third identical mobo to use. That one had the same problem -- only memory slots 1 and 2 worked. I tested it thoroughly with multiple processors and memory sticks. I sent the defective mobo back to MSI and they sent me a new one. This has the same memory slot problem. So I sent it back. The replacement arrived the other day and shows the same problem. I contacted MSI yet again and they said that nobody else has reported memory slot problems on this board and it must be my processor. So my score so far is, out of six boards of this model, I have: One where all four slots work. One which was dead on arrival. Four where only memory slots 1 and 2 work. Before I tear my other machines apart and start swapping processors again I thought I would ask if anyone else has this exact model motherboard and could confirm that all four memory slots either do or do not work. According to MSI you should be able to just plug a single memory module into any of the slots and it will work (and it does on the one mobo I have which works correctly). If you have not yet used all four slots, this is a good time to test them so you know if you can expand your memory in the future. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

• How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

  I regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN/ICQ, as it is not designed for file transfer and it underperforms on the huge files. 3. I would not use file-sharing services, as I need to pay for big files (30 GB is a problem here) and I don't like holding any piece of my data on the third-party server. So, I need some smart tool that will do what I need: sending files directly browser-to-browser and not browser-server-browser. Is it so complex? Is there some web application in the Internet that can do this?

• How do I recover a RAID 1 volume on Mac OS X (10.7)?

  I have a Synology NAS that I've set up with RAID 1. The device is set up with two drives, both the same size (i.e. 500 GB each), formatted in ext3, as a RAID 1 volume (i.e. even though the total capacity is 1TB, I effectively only get 500 GB). In the case of a device failure where I can only access one of the drives, how can I recover my data? The solution I'm looking for is something like: 'Put the working drive in an enclosure, and use <some software> to recover your data.'

• Repartition hard drive using Mac OS X, keep existing data

  I got a 1 TB disk a year or so ago and loaded it with some hundred of GB of data. I somehow neglected to check the file system, which turns out to be FAT-32 and thus too small for files bigger than 4 GB. So now I want to change it, without deleting the data. I thought I'd just make a new partition in the so far unused space. Then with the new partition, copy/move the data into the new partition, and then delete the old FAT-32 partition, and make the new partition bigger again... or just make a few more partitions. The critical step here is, can I make that new partition without ruining the data? The data should be fairly sequentially added to the start of the disk, but what do I know... so that's why I'm asking. Can I safely use Disk Utility for this? Any recommended file system?

• Fix single entry from mbr

  I use EasyBCD to manage my tripleboot of (1) Windows Server 2008 R2, (2) Windows 7 Professional and (3) Ubuntu Linux. While trying to change the order of my boot menu I ended up losing the Windows Server entry. Luckily I had a boot menu backup (.bcd file) that allowed me to restore my boot menu using EasyBCD. However, when I now select the Windows Server option in my boot menu the Windows Server Recovery Environment starts up. So I have to select language/keyboard layout/etc. and then I have 3 options as shown in the image below. . My goal is to fix the one corrupted Windows Server entry from my boot menu without messing up or losing the two other ones. I'm guessing the Recovery Console (Command Prompt) is the next step and that I will be needing bootrec.exe. But when consulting this page: Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows (about half way down there's a link that shows the bootrec.exe options) I'm getting uncertain. The page lists 4 options for bootrec.exe : /FixMbr /FixBoot /ScanOs /RebuildBcd What option do I need to fix just the server entry of my boot menu? Thanks in advance, Sander P.S. All three OS's are on the same physical disk (3 different partitions). • WD Passport Won't Mount

  My WD Passport won't mount. However, it turns on when plugged into my macbook and doesn't make any strange noises. It took a small fall (just a few inches and it was on my couch) and I'm very concerned about physical damage. When I open up disk utility it shows the root 500 GB WD My Passport drive which seems to be OK when I verify it and repair it. However, the "External Hard Drive", the directory underneath the "500 GB WD My Passport drive" is grayed out. When I verify the External Hard Drive it says it needs to be rapaired. When I try and repair it it gives me the following message and does not seem to progress: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." Is there hope for me recovering my data? I stupidly have important data on it that I don't have anywhere else.

• Upgrading from 32 to 64 Bit Windows 7, without losing program installations/games

  I recently built a new computer and put the wrong installation of Windows on (32 bit), meaning I cannot use all of my RAM. I would like to upgrade to the 64 bit version, though I already have downloaded many programs and games which would total to around 30 GB give or take. I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

• Netcat UDP File Transfer Between Two Servers Times Out?

  I'm testing file transfer speeds between two Red Hat servers that are connected to the same switch within the data center and I decided to use netcat to eliminate protocol overhead as much as possible. Testing in TCP mode went well and I was wondering how UDP might fare. On my receiving (client) end, I ran this: nc -u -l 11225 -v > myfile.out And then on the sending (server) end I ran the following: cat myfile.out | nc -u myserver.foo.zzz.com 11225 -v The file I'm testing with is 38 GB but the transfer seems to stop at around 15 GB (one time at 14.9, another at 15.6). I've tested by adding a "-w 5000" just in case it's timing out but no joy. Adding the -v doesn't show anything except acknowledging that the connection occurred. No errors. So - any suggestions as to why would the transfer cease?

• What could be wrong with my CD drive and how do you fix it?

  My CD drive hasn't worked in about 8 months. I was burning CDs in a hurry and pulled it out because it was taking too long (probably an average amount of time). Im running a laptop (Toshiba Satellite A505-6965) that uses a slot drive. Now my computer doesn't accept CDs. It used to pull them in but it doesn't anymore. Ive heard it make odd noises a few times but thats it. The slot is these spongey things and Ive managed to peek into the drive with a flashlight and theres nothing in the way, really. Could someone explain the mechanics of what happened and if it would be possible to fix it? If itd be possible to fix it through Linux that would be great since I keep getting the BSOD (0x0000007B) and am going to try reinstalling Windows 7. But I can't really do that since I don't have a USB drive larger than 2 GB (Windows is about 4 GB) so Im relying on Linux ATM.

• Install Linux with two hard drives

  I've a machine with two hard drives. The first one has 80 GB and the second has 120 GB. I'm about to format this machine and install Linux, and I want to install all the main partitions (/, /boot, /usr/, etc.) on the first hard disk drive (sda) and mount the /home and /var partition on second disk (sdb). Is this possible, and do I have to do something after the instalation? Or is the second hard disk drive automatically mounted? How can I do it? I won't do it, but is there any problem to mount /boot on the second hard disk drive? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.

• NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

  I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • Windows server response time very high

  Server Specs Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit Provider : Fasthosts .Net Framework: 4.0 6 GB RAM (its using 4.6 GB) i have a website with thousands of pages structured like folderone/1/one to 500.aspx folderone/2/one to 500.aspx . . folderone/500/one to 500.aspx To load this pages for the first time after the release, for each folder it takes about 20 to 30 minutes and once one page is loaded the rest of the pages loads fine. This happens for all folders. And this repeats every time i restart the server, when a added anything to app_code or if i change the web.config. My site is mainly works Google and due to this problem its giving errors. Any help will be highly appreciated please. i am happy to buy a beer for you if its resolved. Thanks in advance...

• External Hard Disk's secter could not be read ?

  I've an 500 GB Seagate External Hard Disk (NTFS) . Currently, I can't open it at Windows. Thus, I've tired with chkdsk command .. but still it stopped and can't continue checking disk.. Also I've tired with fsck on Mac . • How to backup mirror copies of C: drive?

• Why is an Ext4 disk check so much faster than NTFS?

  I had a situation today where I restarted my computer and it said I needed to check the disk for consistancy. About 10 minutes later (at "1%" complete), I gave up and decided to let it run when I go home. For comparison, my home computer uses Ext4 for all of the partitions, and the disk checks (which run around once week) only take a couple seconds. I remember reading that having fast disk checks was a priority, but I don't know how they could do that. So, how does Ext4 do disk checks so fast? Is there some huge breakthrough in doing this after NTFS came out (~10 years ago)? Note: The NTFS disk is ~300 GB and the Ext4 disk is ~500 GB. Both are about half full.

• Windows server backup fails at 40%

  I´m configuring windows server backup as full system backup. It starts fine, but when it´s making system drive (c:) backup it stops at 40% every time i try. It only backups 7.28 GB of the total 18.19 GB. I tried changing destination drive and also checking c: filesystem in order to find any problem, but it seems to be ok and the problem is still the same. I got a message telling that the backup is completed with warnings. The warning details says that it didn´t complete backup because of input/output error in source or destination. • How do you pick what server setup you need?

  I recently started receiving pubsub data feed from etsy. It averages around 250 notifications per minute. But obviously, when the USA wakes up that spikes quite heavily. I want to be able to deal with those spikes (about 3 per day) but the rest of day is fine. What's the best method of getting the right server configuration. My current approach is to keep upgrading until the server stops dying... next leap is: Processor: AMD Phenom II X6-1055T HEXA Core RAM: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM HD1: SATA Drive (7,200 rpm) (+500 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive) HD2: SATA Backup Drive (+500 GB SATA (7,200 rpm)) OS: Linux OS (+CentOS 5 64-bit) Bandwidth: 6000GB Monthly Transfer (3000 in + 3000 out) (+100M uplink port) What's the best approach to working out what sort of server setup you need?

• Email server - Disk quota sizes - suggestions?

  Working out a new server for an agency of 200 Employees - with approx 240 email accounts. Internally I'm arguing with myself over the amount of drive space to allocate to each user for the disk quota, I'm just looking for suggestions. Once i have a quota size decided, it will define the solution for storage. I've had everything from 4 GB per account ( which i feel is being generous ) down to 500 Mb ( with is rather restrictive in today's day and age. ) Thing is 4 GB per acocunt is just under 1 TB of allocated storage for email alone. Does anyone follow a "rule of thumb" or have thoughts on this? thanks in advance

• Using an Internal HDD as an External HDD also or an External HDD for installing SAP ?

  Is it possible and advisable to use an Internal Hard Drive as an External Hard drive also. I wanted to install SAP ECC 6 on my system which has only 250 GB but atleast 300 GB is required.I wanted to buy an External Drive first, then I heard loading SAP on an External would make it extremely slow. I'll be using it only as a beginer so even if it is a little slow i don't mind. Is it feasible to run such a big application from an External Hard disk ? So can i purchase a 500 or 1 TB Internal Hard disk and use it as an External too by fitting it with the necessary USB 3.0 Hard drive cases and cables ? or should i purchase a External and load SAP onto it ? • HTTP transfer speeds start fast then slows to a crawl

  We just got a new dedicated 1 gigabit server running IIS. The CPU is 15% or less, the RAM (4 GB total) has 3 GB unused... We are pushing 110 mbits per second... Speeds are really slow.. And, if fact, here's how it happens: We connect, and then the speeds are really fast, and quickly decline to 40 kBps or less. What's going on? It seems the server just wont go above 120 mbits per second. The files are all very large. 50 MB to 500 MB... Could this be a factor? Again, CPU, RAM, UI responsiveness when accessing remotely all seem fine.

Many posts I've read seem to indicate it might be possible to run it on Windows 7 using one of the following: VirtualBox, Windows Virtual PC, VMWare but I'm not entirely sure.

• Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

  I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).
