• High apache load but zero traffic

  I have a problem with new server.. I use VPS Centos with 1GB of ram and I use wordpress CMS. The traffic <100 visitor/hour, but the apache have high load and make the server hang with zero free of ram and can't connect through ssh.   I have a Windows 2003 64 bit terminal server which we run a Java application from. The application has always worked up until 2 days ago. No new updates have been installed to the server in that time frame. I have tried re-installing java 64 bit but still have the following error. • Recommendations for VMWare web server environment with load balancer.

  We run IIS websites on a VMWare production server that pull image content and video content from a separate IIS instance on another server (media server). The media calls (images and video) are straight http:// calls and not using a streaming application. During peak traffic periods, we clone the production server five times and have a load balancer distribute traffic to all five production servers. The media server does not get ramped up. We noticed that the processing and resources on the media server gets very taxed during this period. Would it make sense to run the IIS instance for the media server locally on the production server and have it cloned with the production servers, then have a rule on the load balancer negotiating these media calls from the website? Would it be better to allocate more resources (memory and CPUs) to the media server VM and not clone it with the production servers? Recommendations are sincerely appreciated.

  As far as I know, the load average in top is the numbers of precess(threads) in running or uninterrupted sleep status, So it should be equal to (procs-r +1 )+ procs-b in vmstat, but in practice, this two number always have big gap.   Here are requirements: 1. High Availability 2. Load Balancing First configuration 1. Two linux servers have been configured with one static IP for each: 10.17.243.11, 10.17.243.12 2. Keepalived has been installed and configured with one VRRP instance to provide one virtual IP (10.17.243.10 as VIP, 10.17.243.11 as master and 10.17.243.12 as backup). 3. Everything works fine. The VIP is assigned to the master server (10.17.243.11) as long as it is up and running. As soon as it goes down, the VIP will be assigned to the backup server (10.17.243.12). 4. The problem here is all communication goes to the master server. Second configuration 1. I found active-active configuration for Keepalived which is possible by defining more than one VRRP instance. So that both server have two IPs (real 10.17.243.11 and virtual 10.17.243.10 for server #1 and real 10.17.243.12 and virtual 10.17.243.20 for server #2. 2. Everything works fine. we have two VIPs which are accessible (HA). But all communication coming to each IP still goes to one single machine (either server #1 or #2 depending on the IP). However I found some tricks on the DNS to overcome this limitation. But it's not acceptable in our case. Question: Is there any way to have one virtual IP which is assigned to both servers? By that I mean both servers are handling some part of workload (like the thing we do in web server load balancing)? By using either keepalived or some other tools? Thanks in advance.

• Only receiving one document at a time from new web server.

  We're trying to move our internal ticketing system from a Microsoft Small Business Server in the server closet to a Rackspace Cloud Server. The install is Fedora 11 LAMP, and should be default out of the box, except for the vhosts appended to the bottom of the httpd.conf. The new server is suffering from crippling load times, and watching the page load in Firebug it's easy to see the problem occurring, but I can't figure out the cause. Here is the [old server] (http://rkuykendall.com/uploads/old.server.png). I was expecting something like this, but a little slower since it was no longer hosted locally. Instead, the [new server] (http://rkuykendall.com/uploads/new.server.png) appears to only serve one file at a time. Here's another example of this [staircase load time effect] (http://rkuykendall.com/uploads/staircase.png) and another very clear example of the [staircase effect] (http://rkuykendall.com/uploads/staircase2.png). I talked to some guys on Freenode #httpd with no luck. I created a duplicate server to play with, and also created a fresh server with Fedora Core 13 and moved over just the database and web files with no luck. Any suggestions? • Very, very simple asp.net page takes forever to load

  I've got a page that couldn't be more simple: <%@ Page Trace="true" %> <html> <head></head> <body> <h1>Hello World</h1> <a href="/OtherPage.aspx"/>Other Page</a> <p><%=DateTime.Now.ToString()%> </body> </html> ... but it takes forever to load. There is no database or web service call to slow it down. The trace command reveals that the time from Begin PreInot to End Render is .000049 seconds, but the page itself takes several seconds to load. It is a new web site I just created for this test, and just has a web.config & two test files. The only thing in the web.config is access control: <authorization><allow users="domain\me" /><deny users = "*"/></authorization> What else could IIS be doing with all of that time?

• Allow more websocket connections

  I want to load balance my node.js (DerbyJS to be specific) application on a basic Linode (512MB ram). It can probably take more than one process running at once. The querys/database does not concern me as I'm not doing anything intensive. The problem at the moment is that it can only handle up to ~40 websocket connections at once. I would love if I could get that number in the few hundred+ range. I anticipate a lot of traffic on launch due to the fact that it's a highly niche community with an engaged audience, but after it should be fine with just ~20-40 connections at once, which it handles perfectly as of now. I don't mind spending a bit of money for a week or two worth of running, but I also don't want to switch production environments. How can I test the process to see how many instances I am able to run on the box? Will increasing the number of processes increase the amount of websockets I can handle, or is that a limitation of the server's network? I have an old Macbook Pro running Linux sitting next to me that has 2GB ram and a 2.8 Dual Core Processor. Could I use this to handle some of the extra load? I could probably load balance with nginx to its IP. I'm on a FiOS home network. If you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

If we load This Snake entity using the Repository for Animal, we would have a entity loaded, as shown below: public T GetByKey(object key, bool lazy = false) { if (lazy) return CurrentSession.Load<T>(key); return CurrentSession.Get<T>(key); } var tRepo = new NHibernateReadWriteRepository<TPHAnimal>(); var animal = tRepo.GetByKey(new Guid("602DAB56-D1BD-4ECC-B4BB-1C14BF87F47B"), true); var snake = animal as Snake; snake is null As you can see that the animal entity retrieved from the database cannot be cast to Snake even though the entity is actually a snake. The reason being ISession.Load prevents the entity to be cast to Snake and will throw the following exception: System.InvalidCastException :  Message=Unable to cast object of type 'TPHAnimalProxy' to type 'NHibernateChecker.Model.Snake'. Thus we can see that if we lazy load the entity using ISession.Load<TPHAnimal> then we get a TPHAnimalProxy and not a snake. =============================================================== However if do not lazy load the same cast works perfectly fine, this is since we are loading the entity from database and the entity being loaded is not a proxy. • How do I use Content.Load() with raw XML files?

  I'm using the Content.Load() mechanism to load core game definitions from XML files. It works fine, though some definitions should be editable/moddable by the players. Since the content pipeline compiles everything into xnb files, that doesn't work for now. I've seen that the inbuild XNA Song content processor does create 2 files. 1 xnb file which contains meta data for the song and 1 wma file which contains the actual data. I've tried to rebuild that mechanism (so that the second file is the actual xml file), but for some reason I can't use the namespace which contains the IntermediateSerializer class to load the xml (obviously the namespace is only available in a content project?). How can I deploy raw, editable xml files and load them with Content.Load()?

• Will An External Audio Interface Reduce CPU Load?

One question is if it will reduce CPU load (I'm at about 60%+ and my Macbook has 2.4ghz and 4gigs ram) during intensive audio processing. If the answer is "yes," how will it compare to a different, cheaper firewire audio interface? My thought is that offloading the processing is always the same gain, regardless.

  I have a problem with Internet Explorer for all users. On startup the home page takes around 20-30 seconds to load. This includes servers such as the Domain Controller and Terminal Server. However once the home page has loaded all pages from then on run fine. If you close and then reopen Internet Explorer the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

  Apache seems to stop responding sometimes even though apache processes are still running. After restarting apache, the load average usually shoots up from 1 - 2 to 13 - 15 in a matter of seconds. What would the cause of this be, or how could I find out why apache stops serving? • IIS can't load Oracle.Web assembly (for ASP.NET membership provider)

  I am trying to configure an IIS web site to use an Oracle database for ASP.NET membership, but I can't get it to work. IIS doesn't seem to be able to load the assembly containing the Oracle membership provider. That's what I have so far: An Oracle 10g database online and with all the tables for ASP.NET membership created. Windows 2008 R2 Standard with the web server role installed, including support for ASP.NET. Oracle 11g Release 2 ODAC 11.2.0.1.2 installed. The installed components are: Oracle data provider for .NET, Oracle providers for ASP.NET, Oracle instant client. The default web site on IIS (I am using that for testing) has the following web.config file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <system.web> <membership defaultProvider="OracleMembershipProvider"> <providers> <remove name="SqlMembershipProvider" /> <add name="OracleMembershipProvider" type="Oracle.Web.Security.OracleMembershipProvider, Oracle.Web, Version=2.112.1.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342" connectionStringName="OracleServer" /> </providers> </membership> </system.web> </configuration> (Additional attributes on the "add" element omitted for brevity. Also, the connection string is defined for the whole server.) The Oracle.Web.dll file is on the GAC. That's the relevant part of the C:\Windows\Assembly folder: The web site application pool is configured for .NET 2.0, and has 32-bit applications enabled. I have allowed untrusted providers in the IIS' administration.config file (just for the sake of testing, I'll explicitly add the assembly to the trusted providers list later). With all of this setup in place, when I click on the ".NET Users" icon on the IIS manager, I get a warning about the provider having too much privileges, and when I accept I get the following message: There was an error while performing this operation. Details: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.Web, Version=2.112.1.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. So, what am I missing? How can I get the Oracle membership provider to work? Thank you! UPDATE: It seems that the problem is not with IIS itself, but with the IIS administrator only. When using the web site configuration tool provided by Visual Studio, everything works fine.

  I'm trying to understand the behavior of the Linux pdflush daemon when: The page cache is initially pretty much empty There is a large amount of free memory The system starts undergoing heavy write load My understanding right now is that the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_background_ratio that control page cache flushing behavior are with respect to the present size of the page cache, which means that my writes will flush earlier than they would if the page cache was pre-populated (even with dummy data from some random file), and thus throughput will be lower. Is this accurate?

• Hypervisor load on local disks

  Hi, What is the I/O load on the local disk system for the host OS in XenServer ? I can't find this info anywhere. As we have a SAN for the VMs themselves, can we get away with cheap controller / SATA disk in raid-1 for the hypervisor ? We won't boot from the SAN as it seems prone to problems. Thanks, Chris

• TomCat starts, but does not load properly

  Hey guys, I've been working on this for a day now and still don't know what's wrong. I am essentially building a second environment for our web and app server. I got apache to load up just fine, but tomcat is proving to be difficult. It appears to start and load just fine, but when it comes to loading our application, its just got stuck for 2-5 minutes and then shut down.
