    I travel between the UK and US a lot, I'm looking for a pay as you go (prepay) USB 3G modem for mobile internet that I can use with my laptop while in the States that is reasonably priced. In the UK with O2 I can buy the usb dongle for £10 then it's £2 for 24hours/500mb whenever I choose to use it, no other costs.     The Java Embedded Suite 7.0, a new, packaged offering that facilitates the creation of  applications across a wide range of  embedded systems including network appliances, healthcare devices, home gateways, and routers was demonstrated by Oleg Kostukovsky of  Oracle’s Java Embedded Global Business Unit. He presented a device-to-cloud application that relied upon a scan station connected to Java Demos throughout JavaOne. This application allows an NFC tag distributed on a handout given to attendees to be scanned to gather various kinds of data. “A raffle allows attendees to check in at six unique demos and qualify for a prize,” explained Kostukovsky. “At the same time, we are collecting data both from NFC tags and sensors. We have a sensor attached to the back of the skin page that collects temperature, humidity, light intensity, and motion data at each pod. So, all of this data is collected using an application running on a small device behind the scan station."“Analytics are performed on the network using Java Embedded Suite and technology from Oracle partners, SeeControl, Hitachi, and Globalscale,” Kostukovsky said. Next, he showed me a data visualization web site showing sensory, environmental, and scan data that is collected on the device and pushed into the cloud. The Oracle product that enabled all of this, Java Embedded Suite 7.0, was announced in late September. “You can see all kinds of data coming from the stations in real-time -- temperature, power consumption, light intensity and humidity,” explained Kostukovsky. “We can identify trends and look at sensory data and see all the trends of all the components. It uses a Java application written by a partner, SeeControl. So we are using a Java app server and web server and a database.” The Market for Java Embedded Suite 7.0 “It's mainly geared to mission-to-mission applications because the overall architecture applies across multiple industries – telematics, transportation, industrial automation, smart metering, etc. This architecture is one in which the network connects to sensory devices and then pre-analyzes the data from these devices, after which it pushes the data to the cloud for processing and visualization.     I am trying to use the new LiveConnect features introduced in Java 6 Update 10. This on the Mac, 10.6, with both Firefox and Safari. Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22 Using JRE version 1.6.0_22-b04-307-10M3261 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM Is this not implemented on the Mac? Or do I need to configure something? All I need to do is get and set the value of form elements on the page, so I would be fine with an older (pre-6u10) API if that works better.

    I have been working on the mobile version of my rails application.I am using the approach of using the same controller and rendering a mobile view when the request is from a mobile device. I am using jquery mobile in mobile views. For mobile views I did not use any layout for the views because it is the same as loading the required files in each view. In this approach, Every request essentially loads all of the required js,css files which i feel is making the mobile site to load slowly.     I learned and used Java in college. After graduating, I got a job in C#. Two years after, there are a lot more positions in Java. Would I have a good chance to be hired as a Java programmer? What interview questions would I be asked? Update (07/10/2012): Thank you for all your answers and comments. I really appreciate it. I had a chance to work on a Java project for 9 months. It was with a mix of Perl because we were trying to migrate from Perl to Java. Eclipse has definitely improved a lot. I used Maven and Spring MVC. Pretty fun. So, after the project ended, I did Ruby on Rails. That was a year-long fun project also. Two years later, I am back to .NET. Overall, being a programmer has been very sweet. Wouldn't trade it for anything else!

I like the coding style of Python, it looks really clean, but some other things like no errors before runtime is really strange. However, I don't know what I should learn now. I started with Python but then I saw that Google App Engine also supports Java and the PlayFramework looks amazing too. Now I am really confused. Should I go with Python or Java?     I'm an amateur game developer and somewhat amateur Java developer as well. I'm trying to find a way to have path finding for my game(s). I've first googled for some existing Java libraries that have various path-finding implementations, but I've failed to find any. It seems to me that the only way to get pathfinding code is to use it via a game engine (like Unity). But I'd just like to have a library that I can use and make the game loop and other stuff on my own. Failing to find such a library I've tried implementing some algorithms myself. I've managed to make a running AStar in Java, but for fancier stuff like DStar I find it hard to do it by hand. So then, my question is, are there any Java libraries that contain at least some basic pathfinding algorithms implementations?

    I am going to build a trading system and use with the broker "Interactive Broker" API. The API supports C++ Socket, Java Socket, DDE, Active X APIs in Windows. The API supports Java Socket API, Posix C++ Socket API in Unix kind like Ubuntu. My trading system has some real time long calculations to do and a lot of maths for backtest. I am using a retail trading program Amibroker which is written in C++ and I run it in windows xp 32 bits, it will take me days to do one serious backtest with my G620 Sandy Bridge CPU and 3GB of ram. So for my trading system, I need to have 1. speed, 2. stability, 3. fast development I have done some research, C++ is fastest but I am not good at it and it takes much longer time to develop. Other than C++, Java in linux has the best speed. I also did some research for database and look like mysql has the best speed. Mysql and PostgreSQL both are very popular open source sql db, which one should I choose? I see MySQL has Workbench now which looks like similar to MS SQL management studio so look like a good start. Netbeans should be the most popular Java IDE now and seem like its GUI design can be as easy as Virtual Studio now. I am not sure if made by Netbeans would affect the speed and if its GUI design is really that good and easy to use. Ubuntu 64 bits LTS has good long term support, good community support, and stable. I will buy a new computer if I can create a good trading system for live trading and backtest. Very likely I will buy a I7 or I5 depends on if I7 can really have better speed for my case. Actually I mainly deal with C# in my jobs and I just knew java but not good at java. What would you guys recommend? Any better solution? This will be a big project and very likely life long project for me so I seriously do research including asking you guys before I start and focus on what I should, thanks!

  • Fonts look horrible in any java application

    All fonts in java applications look horrible. I have seen a few questions about this previously, but they are quite old now(11.04 was the most recent, but that didn't seem to be the same problem). For some reason java applications do not use the system font (Ubuntu 11), but rather some elongated font that doesn't seem to have any anti-aliasing. So what I'm asking is if this is an open bug(couldn't find any on launchpad), something the developers have done wrong, or if there is a way to configure the fonts used in java application. Perhaps this is just a shortcoming of openjdk and I should install the Sun version instead? Attached an image showing jitsi, but the problem is also present in minecraft, my internet-bank and anything else involving java. I'm on 12.04, but since I couldn't find anything on launchpad I'm assuming that isn't relevant. Edit: actually managed to forget the picture... Thanks!

Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much. When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study. Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it. Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the wifi/3g radios. Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?
