• When do you tag your software project?

  I realize there are various kinds of software projects: commercial (for John Doe) industrial (for Mr. Montgomery Burns) successful open-source (with audience larger than, say, 10 people) personal projects (with audience size in the vicinity of 1). each of which release a new version of their product on difference conditions. I'm particularly interested in the case of personal projects and open-source projects. When, or under what conditions, do you make a new release of any kind? Do you subscribe to a fixed recurring deadline such as every two weeks? Do you commit to a release of at least 10 minor fixes, or one major fix? Do you combine the two conditions such as at least one condition must hold, or both must hold? I reckon this is a subjective question. I ask this question in light of searching for tricks to keep my projects alive and kicking. Sometimes my projects are active but look as if they aren't because I don't have the confidence to make a release or a tag of any sort for a long time -- in the order of months.

• Query on object id in VQL

  I'm currently working with the versant object database (using jvi), and have a case where I need to query the database based on an object id. What I'm trying to achieve is something along the lines of Employee employee = new Employee("Mr. Pickles"); session.commit(); FundVQLQuery q = new FundVQLQuery(session, "select * from Employee employee where employee = $1"); q.bind(employee); q.execute(); However, I'm finding out the hard way (I get an EVJ_NOT_A_VALID_KEY_TYPE error thrown at me) that this is infact not the way to do it. Anyone got any experience in working with VQL? Your help is much apreciated! A small clarification: The problem is I'm running some performance tests on the database using the pole position framework, and one of the tests in that framework requires me to fetch an object from the database using either an object reference or a low level object id. Thus, I'm not allowed to reference specific fields in the employee object, but must perform the query on the object in its entirety. So, it's not allowed for me to go "select * from Employee e where e.id = 4", I need it to use the entire object.   I'm doing something that doesn't feel very efficient. From my code below, you can probably see that I'm trying to allow for multiple profiles of different types attached to my custom user object (Person). One of those profiles will be considered a default and should have an accessor from the Person class. • OpenCV shape matching

  I'm new to OpenCV (am actually using Emgu CV C# wrapper) and am attempting to do some object detection. I'm attempting to determine if an object matches a predefined set of objects (that I will have to define). The background is well lit and does not move. My objects that I am starting with are bottles and cans. My current approach is: Do absDiff with a previously taken background image to separate the background. Then dilate 4x to make the lighter areas (in labels) shrink. Then I do a binary threshold to get a big blog, followed by finding contours in this image. I then take the largest contour and draw it, which becomes my shape to either save to the accepted set or compare with the accepted set. Currently I'm using cvMatchShapes, but the double return value seems to vary widely. I'm guessing it is because it doesn't take into account rotation. Is this approach a good one? It isn't working well for glass bottles since the edges are hard to find... I've read about haar classifiers, but thinking that might be overkill for my task.

• Cursor on Path doesn't appear in SilverLight

  I am trying to draw a circle with a glass effect using Alpha. I am successful in creating that by using the below XAML. The cursor changes to Hand for the Ellipses, but it doesn't affect Path. Basically, I want to show "hand" cursor wherever the mouse appears over the circle. I hope this is not a known issue and I am missing something small. • How to enforce foreign keys using Xerial SQLite JDBC?

  According to their release notes, the Xerial SQLite JDBC driver supports foreign keys since version 3.6.20.1. I have tried some time now to get a foreign key constraint to be enforced, but to no avail. • OpenGL Colour Interpolation

  I'm currently working on an little project in C++ and OpenGL and am trying to implement a colour selection tool similar to that in photoshop, as below. However I am having trouble with interpolation of the large square. Working on my desktop computer with a 8800 GTS the result was similar but the blending wasn't as smooth. This is the code I am using: GLfloat swatch[] = { 0,0,0, 1,1,1, mR,mG,mB, 0,0,0 }; GLint swatchVert[] = { 400,700, 400,500, 600,500, 600,700 }; glVertexPointer(2, GL_INT, 0, swatchVert); glColorPointer(3, GL_FLOAT, 0, swatch); glDrawArrays(GL_QUADS, 0, 4); Moving onto my laptop with Intel Graphics HD 3000, this result was even worse with no change in code. I thought it was OpenGL splitting the quad into two triangles, so I tried rendering using triangles and interpolating the colour in the middle of the square myself but it still doesnt quite match the result I was hoping for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Different EF Property DataType than Storage Layer Possible?

  Hi, I am putting together a WCF Data Service for PatientEntities using Entity Framework. My solution needs to address these requirements: Property DateOfBirth of entity Patient is stored in SQL Server as string. It would be ideal if the entity class did not also use the "string" type but rather a DateTime type. (I would expect this to be possible since we're abstracting away from the storage layer). Where could a conversion mechanism be put in place that would convert to and from DateTime/string so that the entity and SQL Server are in sync?. I cannot change the storage layer's structure, so I have to work around it. WCF Data Services (Read-only, so no need for saving changes) need to be used since clients will be able to use LINQ expressions to consume the service. They can generate results based on any given query scenario they need and not be constrained by a single method such as GetPatient(int ID). I've tried to use DTOs, but run into problem of mapping the ObjectContext to a DTO, I don't think that is theoretically possible...or too complicated if it is. I've tried to use Self Tracking Entities but they require the metadata from the .edmx file if I'm correct, and this isn't allowing a different property data type. I also want to add customizations to my Entity getter methods so that a property "MRN" of type "string" needs to have .Replace("MR~", string.Empty) performed before it is returned. I can add this to the getter methods but the problem with that is Entity Framework will overwrite that next time it refreshes the entity classes. Is there a permanent place I can put these? Should I use POCO instead? How would that work with WCF Data Services? Where would the service grab the metadata?

• Reporting Services - can't group by a column called "LanguageId"

  Folks, I have a really odd behavior here: I have a SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services report which gets grouped and sorted dynamically. One of the column in my data set which I display is called LanguageId and I was trying to get a grouping going by this LanguageId field. I checked, double-checked and triple-checked the data being returned - it does contain my expected values for LanguageId and everything seems fine and dandy. It just never worked - I didn't get the expected groups, I got things like a specific node actually changing its display value from one ID to another when expanding its subitems, and other really whacky stuff. I discovered that grouping and sorting by LanguageCaption works just fine. It also started working fine after I renamed LanguageId to MyLanguageId. So where on earth is this documented that LanguageId appears to be a system variable / reserved word / keyword of some sort in SQL Server Reporting Services that must be avoided at all costs?? I can't seem to find anything on that topic - even Mr. Google and Mrs. Bing came up empty so far....

• hadoop implementing a generic list writable

  I am working on building a map reduce pipeline of jobs(with one MR job's output feeding to another as input). The values being passed around are fairly complex, in that there are lists of different types and hash maps with values as lists. Hadoop api does not seem to have a ListWritable. • How can I have sub-elements of a complex/mixed type with unrestricted order and count?

  I am working with XML where some elements will contain text with additional markup. This is similar to this example at W3Schools. However, I need the markup tags to be able to appear in any order and possibly more than once. To modify their example for illustration: <letter> Dear Mr.<name>John Smith</name>. Your order <orderid>1032</orderid> will be shipped on <shipdate>2001-07-13</shipdate>. Thank you, <name>Bob Adams</name> </letter> None of the options presented by W3Schools (on the page following the linked example) allow this XML due to the second <name> element. Their explanation of the "indicators" and my testing are consistent. <xs:sequence> - violates the element order <xs:choice> - more than one kind of element is used. <xs:all> - maxOccurs is restricted to "1". This seems like it should be basic, after all, XHTML allows such things. How do I define my schema to allow this?

  Hi, I am using JQuery to position a series of div tags which basically use a class inside of the tag which decorates the divs as bars. So the div is a green box based on its css specifications to the glass. I have a list of STARTING postions, a list of left coordiantes- for the starting points I wish to position my DIV say 556, 560, 600 these automatically are generated as left positions in a list I have a list of ENDING postions, a list of left coordiantes- for the ending points I wish to position my DIV say 570, 590, 610 these automatically are generated as left positions in a list now for each start and end position, the bar(green box) i want to be drawn with its appropriate width as follows. so say f is the offset or position of the start and ff the offset or position of the end : Below draws the green box based on only one start and end position LEFT. if (f.left != 0) { $("#test").html($("<div>d</div>")).css({ position: 'absolute', left: (f.left) + "px", top: (f.top + 35) + "px", width: (ff.left - f.left) + 25 + "px" }).addClass("option1"); } I am looking to loop through the list of positons in the list and draw multiple green boxs based on the positions on the screen.   I'm using a legacy database that was 'future proofed' to keep track of historical changes. It turns out this feature is never used so I want to map the tables into a single entity. My tables are: CodesHistory (CodesHistoryID (pk), CodeID (fk), Text) Codes (CodeID (pk), CodeName) To add an additional level of complexity, these tables hold the content for the drop down lists throughout the application. So, I'm trying to map a Title entity (Mr, Mrs etc.) as follows: Title ClassMap - Public Sub New() Table("CodesHistory") Id(Function(x) x.TitleID, "CodesHistoryID") Map(Function(x) x.Text) 'Call into the other half of the 1-2-1 join in order to merge them in 'this single domain object Join("Codes", AddressOf AddTitleDetailData) Where("CodeName like 'C.Title.%'") End Sub ' Method to merge two tables with a 1-2-1 join into a single entity in VB.Net Public Sub AddTitleDetailData(ByVal m As JoinPart(Of Title)) m.KeyColumn("CodeID") m.Map(Function(x) x.CodeName) End Sub From the above, you can see that my 'CodeName' field represents the select list in question (C.Title, C.Age etc). The problem is that the WHERE clause only applies to the 'CodesHistory' table but the 'CodeName' field is in the 'Codes' table. As I'm sure you can guess there's no scope to change the database. Is it possible to apply the WHERE clause to the Codes table?

  I have a fun issue where during application shutdown, try / catch blocks are being seemingly ignored in the stack. We get legacy support for code that relies on exceptions for program control (bad) and we get to move forward and slowly remove exceptions used for program control. However, when shutting down our UI, we see an exception thrown from "Run" even though "doThrow" is false for ALL current uses of "RunAndPossiblyThrow". I've even gone so far as to verify this by modifying code to look like "RunAndIgnoreThrow" and I'll still get a crash post UI shutdown. Mr. Eric Lippert, I read your blog daily, I'd sure love to hear it's some known bug and I'm not going crazy. • What /else/ causes this?

  MFC Toolbox Library.lib(SimpleFileIO.obj) : error LNK2005: _wcsnlen already defined in libcmtd.lib(wcslen_s.obj) fatal error LNK1169: one or more multiply defined symbols found This is driving me nuts. Normally, one would get this if the various projects that are a part of their solution do not agree on which CRT to use (single threaded, multi-threaded, release or debug). However, I have been over this thing about 500 times now, and they all agree. Background: this is a VS 2010 project just converted from VS 2008. MFC Toolbox Library.lib is set to compile as a static library, using /MTd, as is the target .exe I am trying to compile in this solution. Further, the solution that this is being converted from (VS 2008) already compiles & links properly!!! So it's not like that there is a disagreement between the two .vcproj's - or at least there wasn't before the conversion. Furthermore, the MFC Toolbox Library is used by about 25 other projects in another solution - and in that solution (Master Build English) it compiles & links against those other projects without complaint in both debug and release targets. I have just spent the last hour going over every single project property for this target project (Cimex Header Viewer) vs. several different target exe projects in Master Build English solution - and I cannot find a difference. They appear to be identical, excepting that they're different names. I've tried doing a clean & build all. I'm simply out of ideas. Does anyone have a thought on what else I might investigate??? I think I'm ready to start chewing glass. :(

• WP7 help with menu effects

  Kinda new to Silverlight and have some experience with WPF but I'm doing a project with a group for a class making a game for WP7. I am currently in charge of the menu system for the game and I had a few ideas for "flashy" menu transitions. I got some going for the main menu but I wanted to do something cool for the options submenu. Anyway my idea is to either fashion an expander or to have sort of a variation of a dialog box. But the way I envisioned it would be in either case the menu items blur but are still visible while the expanded menu is displayed or while the dialog is active. If I'm being confusing sorry :) but think of Windows 7 glass effect on the menu while other options are available. What I'm getting at is I want to give this a shot but I have no idea how I would go about doing something like this. Could anyone point me in the right direction or outline some key steps for me to build off? I tried finding something like this on Google but no such luck.

• How do I fix the alpha value after calling GDI text functions?

  I have a application that uses the Aero glass effect, so each pixel has an alpha value in addition to red, green, and blue values. I have one custom-draw control that has a solid white background (alpha = 255). I would like to draw solid text on the control using the GDI text functions. However, these functions set the alpha value to an arbitrary value, causing the text to translucently show whatever window is beneath my application's. After calling rendering the text, I would like to go through all of the pixels in the control and set their alpha value back to 255. What's the best way to do that? I haven't had any luck with the BitBlt, GetPixel, and SetPixel functions. They appear to be oblivious to the alpha value. Here are other solutions that I have considered and rejected: Draw to a bitmap, then copy the bitmap to the device: With this approach, the text rendering does not make use of the characteristics of the monitor (e.g., ClearText). Use GDI+ for text rendering: This application originally used GDI+ for text rendering (before I started working on Aero support). I switched to GDI because of difficulties I encountered trying to accurately measure strings with GDI+. I'd rather not switch back. Set the Aero region to avoid the control in question: My application's window is actually a child window of a different application running in a different process. I don't have direct control over the Aero settings on the top-level window. The application is written in C# using Windows Forms, though I'm not above using Interop to call Win32 API functions.

• C++ std::vector memory/allocation

I am using vector as a memory stack like this: std::vector<double> memory; memory.reserve(size); memory.insert(memory.end(), matrix.data().begin(), matrix.data().end()); // smaller than size size_t offset = memory.size(); memory.resize(memory.capacity(), 0); I need to guarantee that relocation does not happen in the above. thank you. ps: I would also like to know if there is a better way to manage memory stack in similar manner other than vector

• Can I modify the way Windows draws the Aero UI?

  Windows 7 with Aero Glass basically looks quite nice I think. But it has some major drawbacks regarding readability: I cannot easily tell whether a window is currently active or not. I've been tweaking the colours and transparency levels a lot recently but the only safe indicator is the close button: it's red when the window is active, it's colourless otherwise. Then there's the window title text. It is always painted black, on however dark a background. Again, regardless of whether the window is active or not. I've seen WindowBlinds and the tons of available themes you can use with it. Browsing through the most popular or highest rated in several categories I was really scared. I don't want to face Terminator every day, feel like in the Jungle or be fooled that I had an Apple computer which I do not. All I want to change is to make a greater colour difference between active and inactive windows and to invert the window title text colour for dark backgrounds. (Including that visibility hack of a spray brush background.) Is there some Windows API to alter the way Windows draws its windows or does it take the years of private research from Stardock to hook into that? I mean they say it's approved by Microsoft, so I assume there's some official documentation for that, I just couldn't find any.
