• How to to dump JS array... (boommarklet?)

  A page on a site I use is holding some of my data hostage. Once I have logged into the site and navigated to the right page, the data I need is in the array eeData[] - it is 720 elements long (once every 2 minutes of a given day). Rather than simulate the requests to the underlying stuff json supplier and since its only once a day, I am happy to simply develop a bookmarklet to grab the data - preferably as a XML or CSV file. Any pointers to sample code or hints would help. I found a bookmarklet here that is based on this script that does part of this - but I am not up to speed on any potential JS file IO to see if it is possible to induce a file "download" of the data, or pop it opn in a new window I can copy / paste.

• C++ code visualization

  A sort of follow up/related question to this. I'm trying to get a grip on a large code base that has hundreds and hundreds of classes and a large inheritance hierarchy. I want to be able to see the "main veins" of the inheritance hierarchy at a glance - not all the "peripheral" classes that only do some very specific / specialized thing. Visual Studio's "View Class Diagram" makes something that looks like a train and its sprawled horizontally across the screen and isn't very organized. You can't grok it easily. I've just tried doxygen and graphviz but the results are .. somewhat similar to Visual Studio. I'm getting sweet looking call graphs but again too much detail for what I'm trying to get. I need a quick way to generate the inheritance hierarchy, in some kind of collapsible view.

• Array-size macro that rejects pointers

  The standard array-size macro that is often taught is #define ARRAYSIZE(arr) (sizeof(arr) / sizeof(arr[0])) or some equivalent formation. However, this kind of thing silently succeeds when a pointer is passed in, and gives results that can seem plausible at runtime until things mysteriously fall apart. It's all-too-easy to make this mistake: a function that has a local array variable is refactored, moving a bit of array manipulation into a new function called with the array as a parameter. So, the question is: is there a "sanitary" macro to detect misuse of the ARRAYSIZE macro in C, preferably at compile-time? In C++ we'd just use a template specialized for array arguments only; in C, it seems we'll need some way to distinguish arrays and pointers. (If I wanted to reject arrays, for instance, I'd just do e.g. (arr=arr, ...) because array assignment is illegal).

George Jacob Q: How would you describe the vision you have for the user experience of Siebel? A: Contemporary: Siebel runs in all browsers and all browser-capable devices using the latest web technology standards, such as Javascript, CSS, and HTML 5.Productive: Siebel is designed for a user experience that reduces clutter and user keystrokes.User-sensitive: The user experience enables Siebel to adapt easily to site and user preferences.Q: How are the UX features you have delivered so far resonating with customers? A:  Customers are very excited about our refresh of the Siebel user interface framework; the Siebel roadmap and user interface sessions at Oracle OpenWorld last year overflowed. We have had to turn back customer requests to participate in the early adopter program because we had more than we could handle. Customers are calling this a game-changer for Siebel.Q: So the UX highlights are popular?   Was für ein Tag! Unter dem Motto „Maximize your Potential“ kamen über 470 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer beim Oracle Partner Day 2012 zusammen. Hier drehte sich alles um unsere Partner, die, wie Silvia Kaske, Senior Director Alliances & Channel Europe North, in ihrer Begrüßung betonte, „ein sehr wichtiger Baustein in der Wachstumsstrategie von Oracle“ sind. Wie einmalig diese Partnerschaft ist, betonte auch David Callaghan, Senior Vice President EMEA Alliances & Channel in seiner Keynote. Niemand sonst habe, so Callaghan, in ähnlichem Ausmaß wie Oracle, Hardware und Software tatsächlich integriert. So manche Anbieter würden zwar beides zusammenschnüren, aber bei weitem nicht so optimal abgestimmt und verflochten, wie beim „Red Stack“ von Oracle. Neben Keynotes von Jürgen Kunz, SVP Technology Northern Europe & Country Leader Germany, und Christian Werner, Senior Director Alliances & Channels Germany, zu Neuheiten und Entwicklungspotenzialen im Oracle Universum und den Präsentationen aus verschiedenen Spezialisierung-Fachgebieten, gab es sogar einen Blick in die Zukunft der IT: Der Informatiker Professor Hermann Maurer präsentierte nicht nur existierende und geplante Innovationen, etwa die berüchtigte Computerbrille, die bald das Smartphone abzulösen soll – eine ordentliche Portion Science-Fiction war auch dabei. Im Laufe des Tages nutzten diverse Partner die Möglichkeit, vor Ort den Test als OPN Implementation Specialist beim Testcenter Pearson Vue abzulegen. Viele Teilnehmer zeigten sich beeindruckt von den vielen guten Gesprächen untereinander und schöpften die Möglichkeit zum Networking und Erfahrungsaustausch voll aus. Bei einem so dichten Programm ist es natürlich schwierig, wirklich alles mitzunehmen. Daher haben wir die Präsentationen, die auf dem Oracle Partner Day gehalten wurden, hier in der Agenda noch einmal für Sie zusammengestellt. Spannend wurde es bei der Oracle Partner Award Ceremony: Zum zweiten Mal wurden dort deutsche Partner ausgezeichnet, die sich mit besonderem Engagement und Erfolg spezialisiert haben. Wer die glücklichen Gewinner sind und was ihr Unternehmen auszeichnet, lesen sie ebenfalls hier im Blog. Allen Siegern gratulieren wir noch einmal ganz herzlich! Nachdem es im voraus schon wilde Spekulationen gab, was sich wohl hinter der „Oracle Sports Challenge“ verbergen würde, wollen wir diese Frage auch hier auflösen: Wer nach dem vielen Sitzen Lust auf Bewegung hatte, konnte sich verschiedenen, mehr oder weniger sportlichen Herausforderungen stellen. Zu meistern waren verschiedene Geschicklichkeits-Spiele, unter anderem ein fast mannshoher „Oracle Stack“, den es in Yenga-Manier aufrecht zu erhalten galt, Torschüsse auf ein Tor, das von einem vollautomatischen Robo-Keeper bewacht wurde und eine Video-Wand mit einem spielerischen Reaktionstest rund um den „Red Stack“. Den ganzen Tag über konnten die Teilnehmer hinter QR-Codes versteckte Buchstaben sammeln und mit etwas Glück und Geschick einen von drei iPod Supernanos gewinnen. Abgerundet wurde das Programm durch Auftritte der Entertainment-Saxophonistinnen „Hot Sax Club“, der beeindruckenden Fußball-Freestyler mit ihrer Ballakrobatik, dem Close-up Magier Marc Gassert und unseren DJ, der für Stimmung sorgte. Zu meistern waren verschiedene Geschicklichkeits-Spiele, unter anderem ein fast mannshoher „Oracle Stack“, den es in Yenga-Manier aufrecht zu erhalten galt, Torschüsse auf ein Tor, das von einem vollautomatischen Robo-Keeper bewacht wurde und eine Video-Wand mit einem spielerischen Reaktionstest rund um den „Red Stack“. Den ganzen Tag über konnten die Teilnehmer hinter QR-Codes versteckte Buchstaben sammeln und mit etwas Glück und Geschick einen von drei iPod Supernanos gewinnen. Abgerundet wurde das Programm durch Auftritte der Entertainment-Saxophonistinnen „Hot Sax Club“, der beeindruckenden Fußball-Freestyler mit ihrer Ballakrobatik, dem Close-up Magier Marc Gassert und unseren DJ, der für Stimmung sorgte. • ODI 11g - Dynamic and Flexible Code Generation

  ODI supports conditional branching at execution time in its code generation framework. This is a little used, little known, but very powerful capability - this let's one piece of template code behave dynamically based on a runtime variable's value for example. Generally knowledge module's are free of any variable dependency. Using variable's within a knowledge module for this kind of dynamic capability is a valid use case - definitely in the highly specialized area. The example I will illustrate is much simpler - how to define a filter (based on mapping here) that may or may not be included depending on whether at runtime a certain value is defined for a variable. I define a variable V_COND, if I set this variable's value to 1, then I will include the filter condition 'EMP.SAL > 1' otherwise I will just use '1=1' as the filter condition. I use ODIs substitution tags using a special tag '<$' which is processed just prior to execution in the runtime code - so this code is included in the ODI scenario code and it is processed after variables are substituted (unlike the '<?' tag).  So the lines below are not equal ... <$ if ( "#V_COND".equals("1")  ) { $> EMP.SAL > 1 <$ } else { $> 1 = 1 <$ } $> <? if ( "#V_COND".equals("1")  ) { ?> EMP.SAL > 1 <? } else { ?> 1 = 1 <? } ?> When the <? code is evaluated the code is executed without variable substitution - so we do not get the desired semantics, must use the <$ code. You can see the jython (java) code in red is the conditional if statement that drives whether the 'EMP.SAL > 1' or '1=1' is included in the generated code. For this illustration you need at least the ODI 11.1.1.6 release - with the vanilla 11.1.1.5 release it didn't work for me (may be patches?). As I mentioned, normally KMs don't have dependencies on variables - since any users must then have these variables defined etc. but it does afford a lot of runtime flexibility if such capabilities are required - something to keep in mind, definitely.

• A Community Cure for a String Splitting Headache

  A heartwarming tale of dogged perseverance and Community collaboration to solve some SQL Server string-related headaches. Michael J Swart posted a blog this week that had me smiling in recognition and agreement, describing how an inquisitive Developer or DBA deals with a problem. It's a three-step process, starting with discomfort and anxiety; a feeling that one doesn't know as much about one's chosen specialized subject as previously thought. It progresses through a phase of intense research and learning until finally one achieves breakthrough, blessed relief and renewed optimism. In this case, the discomfort was provoked by the mystery of massively high CPU when searching Unicode strings in SQL Server. Michael explored the problem via Stack Overflow, Google and Twitter #sqlhelp, finally leading to resolution and a blog post that shared what he learned. Perfect; except that sometimes you have to be prepared to share what you've learned so far, while still mired in the phase of nagging discomfort. A good recent example of this recently can be found on our own blogs. Despite being a loud advocate of the lightning fast T-SQL-based string splitting techniques, honed to near perfection over many years by Jeff Moden and others, Phil Factor retained a dogged conviction that, in theory, shredding element-based XML using XQuery ought to be even more efficient for splitting a string to create a table. After some careful testing, he found instead that the XML way performed and scaled miserably by comparison. Somewhat subdued, and with a nagging feeling that perhaps he was still missing "something", he posted his findings. What happened next was a joy to behold; the community jumped in to suggest subtle changes in approach, using an attribute-based rather than element-based XML list, and tweaking the XQuery shredding. The result was performance and scalability that surpassed all other techniques. I asked Phil how quickly he would have arrived at the real breakthrough on his own. His candid answer was "never". Both are great examples of the power of Community learning and the latter in particular the importance of being brave enough to parade one's ignorance. Perhaps Jeff Moden will accept the string-splitting gauntlet one more time. To quote the great man: you've just got to love this community! • Agile PLM Highlights from Oracle OpenWorld 2012

  Thank you to everyone who joined us at Oracle OpenWorld this year, either in person or virtually (thanks for tweeting #oowplm)!  From customer presentations to after-hours networking opportunities, there was a lot to see and do during the entire conference.   I'm trying to make a framework for a game I've wanted to do for quite a while. The first thing that I decided to implement was a state system for game states. When my "original" idea of having a doubly linked list of game states failed I found This blog and liked the idea of a stack based game state manager. However there were a few things I found weird: Instead of RAII two class methods are used to initialize and destroy the state Every game state class is a singleton(and singletons are bad aren't they?) • SceneManagers as systems in entity system or as a core class used by a system?

  It seems entity systems are really popular here. Links posted by other users convinced me of the power of such system and I decided to try it. (Well, that and my original code getting messy) In my project, I originally had a SceneManager class that maintained needed logic and structures to organize the scene (QuadTree, 2D game). Before rendering I call selectRect() and pass the x,y of the camera and the width and height of the screen and then obtain a minimized list containing only visible entities ordered from back to front. Now with Systems, originally in my first attempt my Render system required to get added all entities it should handle. This may sound like the correct approach but I realized this was not efficient. Trying to optimize It I reused the SceneManager class internally in the Renderer system, but then I realized I needed methods such as selectRect() in others systems too (AI principally) and make the SceneManager accessible globally again. Currently I converted SceneManager to a system, and ended up with the following interface (only relevant methods): /// Base system interface class System { public: virtual void tick (double delta_time) = 0; // (methods to add and remove entities) }; typedef std::vector<Entity*> EntitiesVector; /// Specialized system interface to allow query the scene class SceneManager: public System { public: virtual EntitiesVector& cull () = 0; /// Sets the entity to be used as the camera and replaces previous ones. virtual void setCamera (Entity* entity) = 0; }; class SceneRenderer // Not a system { vitual void render (EntitiesVector& entities) = 0; }; Also I could not guess how to convert renderers to systems. My game separates logic updates from screen updates, my main class have a tick() method and a render() method that may not be called the same times. In my first attempt renderers were systems but they was saved in a separated manager, updated only in render() and not in tick() like all other systems. I realized that was silly and simply created a SceneRenderer interface and give up about converting them to systems, but that may be for another question. Then... something does not feel right, isn't it? If I understood correctly a system should not depend on another or even count with another system exposing an specific interface. Each system should care only about its entities, or nodes (as optimization, so they have direct references to relevant components without having to constantly call the component() or getComponent() method of the entity).
