• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). (I'm sure this will be more concise as questions here are asked) Thanks

• What is the need of Odata when I have JSON ?

  I am trying to understand the point of Odata and when it would make sense. Right now how I work is I use ASP.NET and MVC/WebApi controller to serialize/deserialize objects into JSON and have javascript do something with it. From what I can tell the benefit of OData is being able to query directly from the URL ... But since I am writing the client and server code there is no need for that. Would anyone ever parse the results of a ODaya query in javascript?? Maybe OData is more about providing a generic endpoint for ALL clients to get detailed information from a query that JSON does not provide ? So if I was a provider of data then I suppose that is what odata is for ? Help me understand the purpose and use of REST/JSON/ODATA.

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. • Need to set up shared storage for Guest virtual machines that are running on a Xen host

  My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network. • Which tools helps to start Ubuntu GUI when boot?

  I am on the way to create a Live CD from scratch. I used Virtual Box for this purpose. I installed Ubuntu base from ubuntumini.iso and installed gnome-shell. And installed Remastersys and created a backup.iso. Burned in a CD and boot from a PC. It end in CLI. Not lead to GUI. I tried the same ISO in VirtualBox. But it work properly there. I think I missed some packages which help to start GUI. Can you help me to identify the packages missed to include in the CD?

• How to avoid being forked into oblivion by a more powerful contributor?

  As recently reported here: Xamarin has forked Cocos2D-XNA, a 2D/3D game development framework, creating a cross-platform library that can be included in PCL projects. However the founder of the project that was forked says: The purpose of the MIT license is to unencumber your fair use. Not to encourage you to take software, rebrand it as your own, and then "take it in a new direction" as you say. While not illegal, it is unethical. It seems that the GitHub page of the new project doesn't even indicate that it's a fork in a typical GitHub manner, opting for an easily-removable History section instead (see bottom). So my questions are: Was Xamarin's action and the way the action was done ethical or not? Is it possible to avoid such a situation if you are a single developer or a small unfunded group of developers? I am hoping this could be either a wiki question or there will be some objective answers grounded on modern OSS ethics/philosophy.

• How do I change the Google Chrome offline icon?

  I am using some offline apps for google chrome and because of this an application indicator pops un in the gnome panel. My problem is that this indicator uses the google chrome default system tray icon and I think it looks ugly with my current theme so I would basically like to change the icon. I can't find the icons that google chrome is using for this purpose but I have no problem finding the other icons used by google chrome and changing them, like the 24x24 or 22x22 icons that you see in the gnome application menu (which by default looks like the application indicator for google chrome). It doens't seem like Google Chrome is taking the icon from e.g /usr/share/icons/ and I can't change the icon by changing the icon theme in like gconf-editor Is there anyway to see the preferences (like you can do with launchers) of the application indicators in the gnome-panel and then locate the indicator icon or change it in another way?

It based on WebApplication with ejb 2.0, so algorithm's will be implemented there, espesially in ejbLoad() and ejbFindByPrimarKey(). • OpenGL Drawing textured model (OBJ) black texture

  I'm using OpenGL, Glew, GLFW and Glut to create a simple game. I've been following some tutorials and I have now a good model importer with textures (from ogldev.atspace.co.uk) but I'm having an issue with the model textures. I have a skybox with a beautiful texture as you can see in the picture That weird texture behind the helicopter (model) is the heli model that I've applied on purpose to that wall to demonstrate that specific texture is working, but not on the helicopter. Why is the heli black when I can perfectly apply its texture to another quad? I've debugged the code and the mesh-render() call is correctly fetching the texture number and passing it to the texture-bind() function.

• Learning the basics

  I am a Linux server administrator first and foremost... Having said that, I have been asked by a former high school teacher of mine to teach students a bit about programming. Like any Linux administrator, I know my fair share of Python and Bash. The problem is that I know NOTHING about the lower level stuff like "machine code" and compilation. The main purpose of this series is to teach programming, not computer science, so I don't need a graduate degree's level of knowledge for this, they will be learning Python first and foremost.   Key Performance Indicators are typically displayed in a scorecard with stop light indicators, which are either red, amber or green light icons. The limitation for these kind of indicators is that you can see the actual and target values in two different fields as well as see the status of the KPI in red, amber or green color. If the user wants to figure out the thresholds associated with the KPI, these values are generally not visible. Further, representing the threshold values in the scorecard itself defeats the purpose of the scorecard. • Why can't the Unity panel be hidden?

  I am a light Linux user. I have Natty installed on my netbook and used to have it dual-booted on my Windows 7 PC. After a total refresh of my notebook off came Ubuntu and I'm back to basics over there. But HERE (I'm running Natty on a HP-Mini) I've decided to poke around a bit to get the best user experience on this little thing. I really like the Unity interface but really hate the static Unity Panel. I have no clue why it's even necessary to be on globally. After all, in the classic interface, both panels can autohide or get filed aside with buttons on either side of the bar. On a 10" screen, real estate is at a premium. What intrinsic purpose does the static unity panel hold for the OS? There has to be a great reason for this thing to HAVE to be here. It ONLY goes away in fullscreen apps and I can't use everything fullscreen Why can the unity panel not be hidden?

  I had read an interview with a great programmer (it is not in English) and in it he said that "a great programmer can be as 100 times as good as a mediocre one" giving reason for why good programmers are very well paid and why programming companies give many facilities for their employees. The idea was that there is a very large demand for good programmers, because of the above reason and that's why companies pay very much to bring them. Do you agree with this statement? Do you know any objective facts that could support it? Edit: The question has nothing to do with experience; if you talk about one great programmer with 1 year experience then s/he should be 10 times more productive than a mediocre programmer with 1 year experience. I agree that from certain experience years onwards, things start to dissipate but that's not the purpose of the question.

  We have a simple web app, part of which allows users to create accounts and then, hopefully soon, to write blog posts. The user log in system is working great, it utilizes the given .sdf database created when a new project is created. We would like to expand it now to allow for blog data (the title, body of the blog, image posts perhaps, etc). However, I'm unsure of how to add another table to the user database for this purpose - or if that would even be best since it has sensitive information in it. I've been reading blog post after blog post and still can't find anything current on this. All of the articles are for MVC projects or older versions of VS. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!

• easy visualization of usage statistics (web app)

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph. I am displaying this data on my site, so a jQuery/javascript/html solution for rendering information into graphs would be ideal. Thank you :) P.S. I wasn't sure if I should ask this on SO, but I am looking more for which product to use, not how to program with it.
