  • How to design database having multiple interrelated entities

    I am designing a new system which is more of a help system for core applications in banks or healthcare sector. Given the nature of the system this is not a heavy transaction oriented system but more of read intensive. Now within this application I have multiple entities which are related to each other. For e.g. Assume the following entities in the system User Training Regulations Now each of these entities have M:N Relationship with each other. Assuming the usage of a standard RDBMS, the design may involve many relationship tables each containing the relationships one other entity ("User_Training", "User_Regulations", "Training_Regulations"). This design is limiting since I have more than 3 entities in the system and maintaining the relationship graph is difficult this way. The most frequently used operation is "given an entity get me all the related entities" . I need to design the database where this operation is relatively inexpensive. What are the different recommendations for modelling this kind of database.

    My development team is considering implementing an eCommerce site using end-to-end SSL -- that is, every page on the site is accessed via an https:// URL -- rather than the more traditional "mixed mode" where most pages are accessed via http:// and only "secure" pages such as login and credit card entry are redirected to https://. Pros of doing such a "pure SSL" approach include avoidance of some session-hijacking attacks such as Firesheep; cons include performance considerations. My question is: Is anyone aware of a list of eCommerce websites (especially USA-based sites), or even specific websites, that use this end-to-end SSL approach? I'm especially interested in "regular" eCommerce sites rather than banks or other "financial" sites.

  • Splitting up revenue among development team members on Apple's app store

    A friend and I have started developing an app to put on Apple's app store. Development is going fine, but thinking ahead, we're trying to come up with an easy way to share any revenue coming from our efforts. The app store allows you to deposit your revenue into a single bank account, but there's no easy way to split revenue among several people. How do (small) dev teams split up revenue on their products, on, and off the app store? As far as I can tell, banks don't offer an easy way to automatically split the balance on an account 50-50 (or any other percentage, for that matter), especially on a regular basis. So how do teams deal with this? We're not incorporated, and we don't have an official business set up. We're considering depositing all the money into one of our accounts and manually transferring half the money to the other person, but this isn't sustainable over long periods of time. Is there a low-cost, sustainable, automatic process for handling these finances?

  • Issues signing up for Windows Azure free trial and pay as you go service

    I get the following error when trying to sign up for the Azure 90-day free trial: We can't authorize the payment method. Please make sure the information is correct, or use another payment method. If you continue to get this message, please contact your financial institution. I've tried three different cards, two credit and one debit. Those cards are issued from two different banks. I've also tried the cards on two separate accounts. Someone from my work also confirmed that he could not sign up for the free trial either. Has anyone else had this problem? I haven't really seen much help searching Google and the support staff doesn't seem interested in helping people sign up for free accounts.

  • Separating text strings into a table of individual words in SQL via XML.

I remember reading it at the time without being able to think of a use for what he was demonstrating. Just a few weeks ago, whilst preparing my article on searching strings, I got out my trusty function for splitting strings into words and something reminded me of the old blog. I’d been trying to think of a way of using XML to split strings reliably into words. The routine I devised turned out to be slightly slower than the iterative word chop I’ve always used in the past, so I didn’t publish it. It was then I suddenly remembered the old routine. Here is my version of it. I’ve unwrapped it from its obvious home in a function or procedure just so it is easy to appreciate. What it does is to chop a text string into individual words using XQuery and the good old nodes() method. I’ve benchmarked it and it is quicker than any of the SQL ways of doing it that I know about. Obviously, you can’t use the trick I described here to do it, because it is awkward to use REPLACE() on 1…n characters of whitespace. I’ll carry on using my iterative function since it is able to tell me the location of each word as a character-offset from the start, and also because this method leaves punctuation in (removing it takes time!).     Here in my city, computer science is still a relatively "young" degree started at most 20-30 years ago. So most of the "senior programmers" here are at most 40 years old. I have friends in London in their mid 40s are earning decent salaries by working for investment banks on various financial products. Some of them don't want to get "promoted" as project managers because they still have the passion in coding and they are probably making more money by coding. However, when you get older, you might loss creativity and might not unable to pick up new languages or frameworsk as fast as those who are decades younger than us. For those who are unwilling or unable to be migrated to be project managers. What should be the mentally retirement age?

    I am trying to write a custom script that will keep a list of strings in a textarea. Each line of the textarea will be a row from a table. The problem I have is how to work the script to allow for adding, updating, or deleting rows based on a submit. So, for instance, I currently have 3 rows in the database: john sue mark I want to be able to delete sue and add richard and it will delete the row with sue and insert a row for richard.     I've done consulting work for years and I've got code snippets in various languages lying around that I'll re-use for various projects. The collection is getting pretty large and I want to set up a code bank for myself. What code banks do people use? Do you find it helps, or is there some better way of organising my reusable code snippets? (If one does exist, I'd prefer it be open-source, accessible via a web browser, language-agnostic, and maybe colour the code the way Stackoverflow does :)
