• Windows xp blinking under score after bios

  so this is for an older pc I have to repair for a friend. The pc has an hdd of about 60 something gb, It uses win xp and let's say 60-70% of the boots it hangs on showing only an underscore bilking line after bios screen, rest of the times it boots fine or the computer shuts down on xp loading screen. Sometimes if you let it alone while the underscore is blinking, it will boot after a while, like a few minutes, some times it won't boot at all even if you give him more time, like one hour. When it boots successfully the pc seems to work fine. I think it's a bad hard disk and i'm about to suggest buying a new one and switching it but I don't have enough experience and i would hate making him buy a new hdd and not solving the problem. anyone has any tips? I know there are other topics about blinking underscores or cursors while xp is booting but the issues about the pc shutting itself down or sometimes booting really freaks me out. Can't format everything and re install until about 10 days from now, cause the dude has some program for his business on this pc and I have to migrate it when the next computer arrives, however he needs to use it until then. so please advise, thx.

• SSD won't boot anymore

  Yesterday I put the computer to sleep. Something went wrong because it didn't go fully to sleep. So I restarted the pc and now it won't boot windows 7 anymore. It said : "Please insert valid boot device". I ran Windows 7 restore disc and tried restoring, first it said, mbr fixed. No result but now it said : "Operating system could not be loaded" I ran Windows 7 restore disc again and then it said something about a corrupt partition and that he fixed it. But got the same msg at restart about operating system not found. I ran Windows 7 restore disc again and used diskpart and watched the volumes. My SSD shows up as RAW filesystem... not as NTFS. The size of the disk seems correct. In the bios it also shows up as Healthy disk. What could went wrong and could I recover data with testdisk? I assume something went wrong with the partition :(. It's a Plextor SSD 256M2P SSD, only 3 months old. Thx in advance

  This question already has an answer here: How do I set the desktop background on Windows from a script? 4 answers Okay so I just got this program that lets me lock my PC screen (this info doesn't matter much) anyways... You can run files when the program starts/locks and closes/unlocks. What I would like to do is create a script/bat that changes my desktop background to an image when I click "lock" and another script to change the desktop image when I "unlock". Is there a simple script or BAT file that someone knows of that does this??? or knows how to do this??? I would like to be able to modify it myself so it is the picture I would like to be selected. So all I would do is change the file directory of the image used on the background in the BAT file/script. EDIT: Thank you for the link! It hleped out a bit but I still have one question... • jquery sortable scroll problem

  Hi I'm having problems using the sortable function of jQ:uery UI. The scroll doesn't seem to work.. If the second list ( lists are created on the table rows in a tbody and each tbody is connect ) isn't visible I want it to be possible to scroll towards it for dropping my table row. • Combobox with collection view itemssource does not update selection box item on changes to the Model

  Hello, Sorry for the earlier lengthy post. Here is my concise (!) description. I bind a collection view to a combobox as a itemsSource and also bind its selectedvalue with a property from my view model. I must keep IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="False". I change the source list ofr the view and then refresh the view. The changed (added, removed, edited) items appear correctly in the item list of the combo. But problem is with the selected item. When I change its property which is also the displaymember path of the combo, the changed property value does not reflect back on the selecton box of the combo. If you open the combo dropdown it appears correctly on the item list but not on the selection box. Now if I change the combobox tag to Listbox in my XAML (keeping all attributes as it is) then when selected item's displaymember property value is updated, the changes reflect back on the selected item of the list box . Why this issue? Just FYI: My View Model has properties EmployeeCollectionView and SelectedEmployeeId which are bound to combo as ItemsSource and SelectedValue resp. This VM implements the INotifyPropertyChanged interface. My core employee class (list of which is the source for the EmployeeCollectionView) is simply a Model class without INotifyPropertyChanged. DisplayMemberPath is "Name" property of employee Model class. I change this by some means and expect the combo selection box to update the value. I tried refreshing ther SelectedEmployeeId by setting it 0 (where it correctly selects the dummy "-- Select All --" employee entry from itemsSource) and old selected value back. But no use. The old value takes me back to the old label. Items collection has latest entry though. When I make combobox's IsEditable=True before the view's refresh and after refresh I make IsEditable=False then the things work out correctly! But this is a patch and is unnecessary.   HI, I am trying to call a method defined in flash object from javascript (firefox-3.0/Linux) and getting the exception: "NPMethod called on non- NPObject wrapped JSObject". If I use eval on window.document.flash_object.func() it throws "NPMethod called on non-NPObject wrapped JSObject". Where as, if I define a javascript function in side the page as given below: function myFunc() { return flash_object.func(); } and later do a eval of window.document.myFunc() it works fine. I am running the two evals through a test framework called Selenium. [eval(window.document.flash_object.func()) and eval(window.document.myFunc())]. The issues seems to be issue with invoking the flash-object method without passing 'this' reference.   Hi All, I'm trying to call a PSExec task from CC.NET and running into some difficulties. The PSExec task is kicked off and the Joel.bat file is executed. I get some information in the build log about exit codes, but the task is successful. Here's the build log output. PsExec v1.97 - Execute processes remotely Copyright (C) 2001-2009 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com C:\Utilities\Joel.bat exited with error code 0. The second time I force the build I get the dreaded "The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)" error message. I can't ever run the build more than once More so, if I try to shut down the cruise control .net service from within the services MSC, it can't. It's like there's a lock somewhere that is taken and not released. The only way I can kill the service is by killing the ccservices.exe process. I've tried the exact same thing using an nant task and gotten the exact same results. It works the first time, and fails the second and I can't shutdown the process. I'm not sure if this is an issue with CC.NET or with PSEXEC (or me of course). Anybody got any ideas? I'm posting to the CC.NET forums as well. I'm using the latest and greatest of PSExec and 1.4.4 of CC.NET. Thx, Joel

  I have several User Controls in a project, and one of them retrieves items from an XML, creates objects of the type "ClassItem" and should notify the other UserControl information about those items. Yet the code in Class2 doesn't even seem to be run :-( and there are no notifications of course... Am I mistaken in any of the assumptions I've done, or am I missing something? • Embedding SWF in Powerpoint VSTO

  hi guys, I was wondering if there is someway to embed a Flash Shockwave Object or .SWF file in MS Powerpoint (Presentation) 2007 and higher version. ie inside ".pptx" formats . by embed i mean when i save the presentation,close it . i wont be needing the the .swf file again.that way i can share the Presentations with others. If i use this link Insert-Flash-Into-PowerPoint-2007,it works but when i save and close the presentation,the swf file doesnt get embeded. (Note:if i do the same with a .ppt file,it works correctly.) I know we can embed the swf inside powerpoint presentation version 2003 ie.".ppt" format. but couldn't do the same in .pptx format. Also is it possible to embed .swf file in .pptx using OpenXML format? I tried to rename the ".pptx" file to ".zip" and added the ".swf" in media folder. and then renamed it back to ".pptx",but when opened in Powerpoint,it gave error about unreadable content or corruption. I had read somewhere that its kind of strategy from MS not to provide this kind of support for Adobe Swf file / ActiveX object. and as of now the feature is not supported. Flashppt PPTX Embed not supported I tried the same with office 2010 and still the same result.it doesnt work. Anyone has any workarounds etc? • Why is my WPF splash screen progress bar out of sync with the execution of the startup steps?

  Hello, I've implemented a simple WPF splash screen window which informs the user about the progress of the application startup. The startup steps are defined this way: var bootSequence = new[] { new {Do = (Action) InitLogging, Message = "Init logging..."}, new {Do = (Action) InitNHibernate, Message = "Init NHibernate..."}, new {Do = (Action) SetupUnityContainer, Message = "Init Unity..."}, new {Do = (Action) UserLogOn, Message = "Logon..."}, new {Do = (Action) PrefetchData, Message = "Caching..."}, }; InitLogging etc. are methods defined elsewhere, which performs some time consuming tasks. The boot sequence gets executed this way: foreach (var step in bootSequence) { _status.Update(step.Message); step.Do(); } _status denotes an instance of my XAML splash screen window containing a progress bar and a label for status information. Its Update() method is defined as follows: public void Update(string status) { int value = ++_updateSteps; Update(status, value); } private void Update(string status, int value) { var dispatcherOperation = Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( DispatcherPriority.Background, (ThreadStart) delegate { lblStatus.Content = status; progressBar.Value = value; }); dispatcherOperation.Wait(); } In the main this works, the steps get executed and the splash screen shows the progress. But I observed that the splash screen for some reasons doesn't update its content for all steps. This is the reason I called the Dispatcher async and wait for its completion. But even this didn't help. Has anyone else experienced this or some similar behaviour and has some advice how to keep the splash screen's update in sync with the execution of the boot sequence steps? I know that the users will unlikely notice this behaviour, since the splash screen is doing something and the application starts after booting is completed.   hi, I have this weird problem that I cannot handle myself. A class in the model of my mvp-project designed as singleton causes an InvalidCastException. The source of error is found in this code line where the deserialised object is assigned to the instance variable of the class: engineObject = (ENGINE)xSerializer.Deserialize(str); It occurs whenever I try to add one of my UserControls to a Form or to a different UC. All of my UCs have a special presenter that access the above mentioned instance variable of the singleton class. This is what I get when trying to add a UC somewhere: 'System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'MVP.Model.EngineData' threw an exception. ---- System.InvalidCastException: [A]Engine cannot be cast to [B]Engine. Type A originates from 'MVP.Model, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' in the context 'LoadNeither' at location '[...]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\ProjectAssemblies\uankw1hh01\MVP.Model.dll'. So I somehow have two assemblies and they are not accessed from my project folder, but from a VS temp folder? I googled a lot and only found this: IronPython Exception: [A]Person cannot be cast to [B]Person. There is a solution offered, but first it concerns IronPhyton and second I don't know where to use it within my project? It would be just great, if u could help me out here :-) thx

• IIS 7 can't connect to SQLServer 2008

  Sorry if this is the most seen question on the web, but this is my turn. I am trying to publish my asp.net mvc app on IIS 7 under MS Sql Server 2008. I am on a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine. I get the following classical error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Under SQLServer, Allow remote connections is checked. My connection string is: Data Source=.\MSSQLSERVER;Initial Catalog=mydbname;User Id=sa;Password=mypassword I also tried with no username/password and "Integrated Security=true". There is only one instance of SQLServer installed. I tried to access my web page locally and remotely. There is no active firewall on the virtual machine. Thx for your help.

I had to physically move the host, so I shut down all machines via console: xe vm-shutdown force=true vm=my-machine-uuis-s After that I shut down the machine itself by issuing: halt After the reboot today the local storage repository is unplugged. I was trying to repair it via XenCenter, but I don't trust this one. So I tried: [root@xenserver ~]# xe pbd-list uuid ( RO) : ef6e2f3b-5825-393c-23e1-391d105c87ec host-uuid ( RO): c4bcf09c-2e52-448f-8210-df5d13bd33a9 sr-uuid ( RO): 2fb3be9c-075c-53ed-acb6-42f0c4ad0614 device-config (MRO): device: /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD5001ABYS-_WD-WCAS83698154,/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD5001ABYS-_WD-WCAS83694262 currently-attached ( RO): false To reattach the storage I issued: xe pbd-plug uuid=ef6e2f3b-5825-393c-23e1-391d105c87ec That one is running now for a while but not talking to me. The local repo has around 1TB. Should I wait, or are there any other options to reattach the local repo? What could have caused this problem? Any ideas? Thx. J

• pthreads: reader/writer locks, upgrading read lock to write lock

  I'm using read/write locks on Linux and I've found that trying to upgrade a read locked object to a write lock deadlocks. i.e. // acquire the read lock in thread 1. pthread_rwlock_rdlock( &lock ); // make a decision to upgrade the lock in threads 1. pthread_rwlock_wrlock( &lock ); // this deadlocks as already hold read lock. I've read the man page and it's quite specific. The calling thread may deadlock if at the time the call is made it holds the read-write lock (whether a read or write lock). What is the best way to upgrade a read lock to a write lock in these circumstances.. I don't want to introduce a race on the variable I'm protecting. Presumably I can create another mutex to encompass the releasing of the read lock and the acquiring of the write lock but then I don't really see the use of read/write locks. I might as well simply use a normal mutex. Thx

In difference to Ryan's showcase my URL called via the AJAX request shall be handled dynamically, cause I do not always call the same URL when the user reaches the end of my page. • What is the best way to send structs containing enum values via sockets in C.

  I've lots of different structs containing enum members that I have to transmit via TCP/IP. While the communication endpoints are on different operating systems (Windows XP and Linux) meaning different compilers (gcc 4.x.x and MSVC 2008) both program parts share the same header files with type declarations. For performance reasons, the structures should be transmitted directly (see code sample below) without expensively serializing or streaming the members inside. So the question is how to ensure that both compilers use the same internal memory representation for the enumeration members (i.e. both use 32-bit unsigned integers). • why does text from socket server erase previously written text?

  This is strange enough I'm not sure how to search for an answer. I have a program in Python that communicates via TCP/IP sockets to a telnet-based server. If I telnet in manually and type commands like this: SET MDI G0 X0 Y0 the server will spit back a line like this: SET MDI ACK Pretty standard stuff. Here's the weird part. If, in my code, I precede my printing of each of these lines with some text, the returned line erases what I'm trying to print before it. So for example, if I write the code so it should look like this: SENT: SET MDI G0 X0 Y0 READ: SET MDI ACK What I get instead is: SENT: SET MDI G0 X0 Y0 SET MDI ACK Now, if I make the "READ: " text a bit longer, I can get a better idea of what's happening. Let's say I change READ: to 12345678901234567890, so that it should read as: 12345678901234567890: SET MDI ACK What I get instead is: SET MDI ACK234567890: So it seems like whatever text I'm getting back from the server is somehow deleting what I'm trying to precede it with. I tried saving all of my saved lines in a list, and then printing them out at the end, but it does exactly the same thing. Any ideas on what's going on, or even on how to debug this? Is there a way to get Python to show me any hidden chars in a string, for example? thx!

  Hello, I'm trying to make my Custom Membership starting from ASP.NET's. I have a users table created by me which has as Primary Key a Guid UserId, exactly the sames as ASP.NET's default user and membership table. I have all the Foreign Key relationships built. However, I cannot insert the user into my custom users table. The data gets inserted correctly into the default ASP.NET's tables. I have tried the following scenarios: First version Receive the user model from POST call the CreateUser method of the Membership.class (stuff gets inserted) without modifying the user object, I try to insert it using EF's AddObject I receive the following error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'LoweredUserName', table 'asp.dbo.aspnet_Users'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.\r\nThe statement has been terminated."} System.Exception {System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException The error actually makes sense as EF's AddObject doesn't know how to create the LoweredUserName value, and I don't want to do it, this is ASP.NET's job. Second version Receive the user model from POST call the CreateUser method of the Membership.class (stuff gets inserted) Get the Guid of the freshly inserted system user get the ASP.NET's User object and overwrite that of user.User get the ASP.NET's Membership object and overwrite that of user.Membership (remember the FKs) try again EF's AddObject new error {"The relationship between the two objects cannot be defined because they are attached to different ObjectContext objects."} System.Exception {System.InvalidOperationException} Don't know what this is, but it certenly doesn't make any sense for me. After some googleing I think that it has something to do with the context, but as I'm a beginner I don't know how to fix it. Any ideeas on how to accomplish this task are more than welcomed, especially if they follow some good practices. Thx

• Silverlight HttpWebRequest.Create hangs inside async block

  I am trying to prototype a Rpc Call to a JBOSS webserver from Silverlight (4). I have written the code and it is working in a console application - so I know that Jboss is responding to the web request. Porting it to silverlight 4, is causing issues: let uri = new Uri(queryUrl) // this is the line that hangs let request : HttpWebRequest = downcast WebRequest.Create(uri) request.Method <- httpMethod; request.ContentType <- contentType It may be a sandbox issue, as my silverlight is being served off of my file system and the Uri is a reference to the localhost - though I am not even getting an exception. Thoughts? Thx UPDATE 1 I created a new project and ported my code over and now it is working; something must be unstable w/ regard to the F# Silverlight integration still. Still would appreciate thoughts on debugging the "hanging" web create in the old model... • Access to multiple ItemRenderers within an AdvancedDataGrid

  I've create an AdvancedDataGrid where most of the cell are based on an ItemRenderer. The custom ItemRenderer (SoundBox) extends VBox. This custom component allow for simple changes in the background color based on user clicking on a cell. I want to display messages to the user by popup message. all the messages will be appears in one message box. For above example, the message will be appeared in two box. Can it be done in all in one box? I try using '\n' or 'br'...also cannot or i did it wrongly? any idea?? Is there any reference or tutorial on this? really apreaciate.. thx all..
