• Error Building Gem

  I tried to install the following gem: http://github.com/maxjustus/sinatra-authentication on Windows 7 running Ruby 1.9 from the One-Click Installer. I got the following error: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Joel>gem install sinatra-authentication Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing sinatra-authentication: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby- 0.7.5 for inspection. Results logged to C:/Ruby19/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/yajl-ruby-0.7.5/ext/gem_mak e.out I looked everywehere online, tried to install earlier versions, and attempted a manual install without success (it gave me a stack too deep error). I suspect there are problems with the yajl-ruby gem (http://github.com/brianmario/yajl-ruby), a dependency? (I think) The logs in gem_make.out show: C:/Ruby19/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile make 'make' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. • Left Join with a OneToOne field in Django

  I have 2 tables, simpleDB_all and simpleDB_some. The "all" table has an entry for every item I want, while the "some" table has entries only for some items that need additional information. The Django models for these are: class all(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=40) important_info = models.CharField(max_length=40) class some(models.Model): all_key = models.OneToOneField(all) extra_info = models.CharField(max_length=40) I'd like to create a view that shows every item in "all" with the extra info if it exists in "some". Since I'm using a 1-1 field I can do this with almost complete success: allitems = all.objects.all() for item in allitems: print item.name, item.important_info, item.some.extra_info but when I get to the item that doesn't have a corresponding entry in the "some" table I get a DoesNotExist exception. Ideally I'd be doing this loop inside a template, so it's impossible to wrap it around a "try" clause. Any thoughts? I can get the desired effect directly in SQL using a query like this: SELECT all.name, all.important_info, some.extra_info FROM all LEFT JOIN some ON all.id = some.all_key_id; But I'd rather not use raw SQL.

• Retrieve parent node from selection (range) in Gecko and Webkit

  I am trying to add an attribute when using a wysiwyg editor that uses "createLink" command. I thought it would be trivial to get back the node that is created after the browse executes that command. Turns out, I am only able to grab this newly created node in IE. Any ideas? • jQuery AJAX call not working in Webkit

  I've run into a strange issue with Webkit based browsers (both Safari and Chrome - I'm testing on a Mac) and I am not sure what is causing it. I've tried changing the form submit button from "button" to "submit", but that also prevents it from working on Safari or Chrome. What I am trying to accomplish is: submit the form call another script to get status on the file being uploaded via the form (it's for a small upload progress meter). • WCF configuration and ISA Proxies

  Hi, I have a setup with a .NET WCF Service hosted on IIS. The client apps are connecting to the service through a set of ISA proxy's. I don't know how many and don't know about their configuration etc. In the client apps I open a client to the service and make several calls via the same client. It works great in my office, but when I deploy at the customer (using the ISAs), after some calls, the connection breaks. In a successfull case, the client will maximum live a few seconds, but is that too much? I think there might be several proxyes. Maybe it's using load ballancing. pseudo code is something like this: WcfClient myClient = new WcfClient(); foreach (WorkItem Item in WorkItemsStack) myClient.ProcessItem(Item); myClient.Close(); I am thinking whether I have to do something like this foreach (WorkItem Item in WorkItemsStack) { WcfClient myClient = new WcfClient(); myClient.ProcessItem(Item); myClient.Close(); } Any one with experience with this field? • C# winforms: graphics.DrawImage problem

  Hi, I have a really strange problem with Graphics.DrawImage method. I have the PictureBox control in the Panel control with AllowScroll property = true. The program cuts the image on small parts basing on the area selected by the user. I load the image 300x547 and select the area (the red rectangle): program properly cuts the image: then, I load another image 427x640: and then, as the result I see that the image is not cut properly. Each img.jpg file has properly width & height but the drawn image is too small: here's the code snippet - it saves the bitmap area selected by the user: Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(selectedAreaRECT.Width, selectedAreaRECT.Height); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bmp); g.DrawImage(OriginalIMG, 0,0, selectedAreaRECT, GraphicsUnit.Pixel); g.Save(); g.Dispose(); bmp.Save(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + @"\Temp\" + "img1.jpg", System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Jpeg); As You see, the code is the same for the img1.jpg from image A and from Image B. • Rotate a feature Image in Open Layers - ReApply StyleMap to layer.

  I have an open layers map. It adds and removes my "imageFeature" every 10secs or so. I have a JSON feed that gives me the rotation that I need, I have a request to get that rotation and set it as a variable of rotationv. Everything works but the fact when the image is recreated it does not update the rotation. My code is as follows: JSON request: var rotationv = (function () { rotationv = null; $.ajax({ 'async': false, 'global': true, 'url': urldefault, 'dataType': "json", 'success': function (data) { rotationv = data.rotation; } }); return rotationv })(); Creating image feature: imageFeature = new OpenLayers.Feature.Vector( new OpenLayers.Geometry.Point(mylon, mylat), { rotation: rotationv } ); The image is set in the styling elsewhere. Why does this not rotate my image? Debugging with firebug I now notice that "rotationv" is updating as per it should be. But when the point is destroyed then added again it does not apply the new rotation... Add: I realised that the "image" is applied as per the layer. So I need to figure out how to re apply the stylemap to the layer so it will trigger the "update" on the page. //redefine layer 2 so it can be updated - test.js is just a 0.0 ref// var layer2 = new OpenLayers.Layer.GML("Layer 2", "test.js", { format: OpenLayers.Format.GeoJSON, styleMap: styleMap }); But even if I add the above into my function still no luck. • Weblogic 10.3, JDBC, Oracle, SQL - Table or View does not exist

  Hi, I've got a really odd issue that I've not had any success googling for. It started happening with no changes to the DB, connection settings, code etc. Problem is, when accessing a servlet, one of the EJB's is doing a direct SQL call, very simple "select \n" + " value, \n" + " other_value \n" + " from \n" + " some_table \n" + " where some_condition = ? " That's obviously not the direct SQL, but pretty close. For some reason, this started returning an error stating "ORA-00942: table or view does not exist". The table exists, and the kicker is if I hook in a debugger, change a space or something minor (not changing the query itself) in the query, and hot-deploy the change, it works fine. This isn't the first time I've run across this. It only seems to happen in dev environments (haven't seen it in q/a, sandbox, or production yet), is not always replicable, and driving me seriously insane. By not always replicable I mean that occasionally a clean build & redeploy will sometimes fix the problem, but not always. It's not always the same table (although if the error occurs it continues with the same query). Just throwing a feeler out there to see if anybody has run into issues like this before, and what they may have discovered to fix it.

• Using cellUpdateEvent with YUI DataTable and JSON DataSource

  I'm working with a UI that has a (YUI2) JSON DataSource that's being used to populate a DataTable. What I would like to do is, when a value in the table gets updated, perform a simple animation on the cell whose value changed. Does a cell that's updated as a result of the setInterval callback even fire a cellUpdateEvent? It may be that I don't fully understand what's going on under the hood with DataTable. Perhaps the whole table is being redrawn every time the data is queried, so it doesn't know or care about changes to individual cells?. Is the solution to write my own specific function to replace onDataReturnReplaceRows? Could someone enlighten me on how I might go about accomplishing this? Edit: After digging through datatable-debug.js, it looks like onDataReturnReplaceRows won't fire the cellUpdateEvent. It calls reset() on the RecordSet that's backing the DataTable, which deletes all of the rows; it then re-populates the table with fresh data. I tried changing it to use onDataReturnUpdateRows, but that doesn't seem to work either.

• Custom Error Handling

  Using GoDaddy to host my site (I know that's my first problem)! :-) Trying to setup customer error messages for my site using IIS7. GoDaddy allows you to setup a 404 in their control panel, but I can't override this, or setup any additional error redirects, specifically a 500-server error. • Setting UIImage dimensions on UITableViewCell image

  I've got a standard UITableViewCell where I'm using the text and image properties to display a favicon.ico and a label. For the most part, this works really well since UIImage supports the ICO format. However, some sites (like Amazon.com say) have favicon.icos that make use of the ICO format's ability to store multiple sizes in the same file. Amazon stores four different sizes, all the way up to 48x48. This results in most images being 16x16 except for a few that come in at 32x32 or 48x48 and make everything look terrible. I have searched here, the official forum, the documentation, and elsewhere without success. I have tried everything that I could think of to constrain the image size. The only thing that worked was an undocumented method, which I'm not about to use. This is my first app and my first experience with Cocoa (came from C#). In case I wasn't clear in what I'm looking for, ideally the advice would center around setting the dimensions of the UIImage so that the 48x48 version would scale down to 16x16 or a method to tell UIImage to use the 16x16 version present in the ICO file. I don't necessarily need code: just a suggestion of an approach would do me fine. Does anyone have any suggestions? (I asked in the official forum as well because I've sunk more than a day into this already. If a solution is posted there, I'll put it here as well.)

• Eclipse - How can I change a 'Project Facet' from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 5.5?

  (Eclipse 3.4, Ganymede) I have an existing Dynamic Web Application project in Eclipse. When I created the project, I specified 'Default configuration for Apache Tomcat v6' under the 'Configuration' drop down. It's a month or 2 down the line, and I would now like to change the configuration to Tomcat 'v5.5'. (This will be the version of Tomcat on the production server.) I have tried the following steps (without success): I selected Targeted Runtimes under the Project Properties The Tomcat v5.5 option was disabled and The UI displayed this message: If the runtime you want to select is not displayed or is disabled you may need to uninstall one or more of the currently installed project facets. I then clicked on the Uninstall Facets... link. Under the Runtimes tab, only Tomcat 6 displayed. For Dynamic Web Module, I selected version 2.4 in place of 2.5. Under the Runtimes tab, Tomcat 5.5 now displayed. However, the UI now displayed this message: Cannot change version of project facet Dynamic Web Module to 2.4. The Finish button was disabled - so I reached a dead-end. I CAN successfully create a NEW Project with a Tomcat v5.5 configuration. For some reason, though, it will not let me downgrade' an existing Project. As a work-around, I created a new Project and copied the source files from the old Project. Nonetheless, the work-around was fairly painful and somewhat clumsy. Can anyone explain how I can 'downgrade' the Project configuration from 'Tomcat 6' to 'Tomcat 5'? Or perhaps shed some light on why this happened? Thanks Pete

• ASP.NET Sql Timeout

  Well we have this Asp.Net application that we installed at a customer but now some times we get a SqlException that says "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." now the wired thing is that the exception comes instantly when i press the button, this does not happen every time i press the button so its random.. any idea what i could try to pinpoint the problem? We are using the EnterpriseLibrary Database block if that matters... • Will fixed-point arithmetic be worth my trouble?

  I'm working on a fluid dynamics Navier-Stokes solver that should run in real time. Hence, performance is important. Right now, I'm looking at a number of tight loops that each account for a significant fraction of the execution time: there is no single bottleneck. Most of these loops do some floating-point arithmetic, but there's a lot of branching in between. The floating-point operations are mostly limited to additions, subtractions, multiplications, divisions and comparisons. All this is done using 32-bit floats. My target platform is x86 with at least SSE1 instructions. (I've verified in the assembler output that the compiler indeed generates SSE instructions.) Most of the floating-point values that I'm working with have a reasonably small upper bound, and precision for near-zero values isn't very important. So the thought occurred to me: maybe switching to fixed-point arithmetic could speed things up? I know the only way to be really sure is to measure it, that might take days, so I'd like to know the odds of success beforehand. Fixed-point was all the rage back in the days of Doom, but I'm not sure where it stands anno 2010. Considering how much silicon is nowadays pumped into floating-point performance, is there a chance that fixed-point arithmetic will still give me a significant speed boost? Does anyone have any real-world experience that may apply to my situation?

  Hi, Hit an interesting problem today when trying to upload an image file < 2MB using dojo.io.iframe. My function to process the form is called, but before the form is posted to the server I am getting the following error: TypeError: ifd.getElementsByTagName("textarea")[0] is undefined My function that is used to action the post of the form is : function uploadnewlogo(){ var logoDiv = dojo.byId('userlogo'); var logoMsg = dojo.byId('uploadmesg'); //prep the io frame to send logo data. dojo.io.iframe.send({ url: "/users/profile/changelogo/", method: "post", handleAs: "text", form: dojo.byId('logoUploadFrm'), handle: function(data,ioArgs){ var response = dojo.fromJson(data); if(response.status == 'success'){ //first clear the image //dojo.style(logoDiv, "display", "none"); logoDiv.innerHTML = ""; //then we update the image logoDiv.innerHTML = response.image; }else if(response.status == 'error'){ logoMsg.innerHTML = data.mesg; }else{ logoMsg.innerHTML = '<div class="error">Whoops! I've got very similar code in my application that uploads word/pdf documents and that doesn't error, but for some reason this does. Any ideas or pointers on what I should try to get this to work without errors? Oh I'm using php and Zend framework for the backend if that has anything to do with it, but I doubt it as it's not even hitting the server before it fails. Many thanks, Grant

• GAE Task Queue oddness

  I have been testing the taskqueue with mixed success. Currently I am using the default queue, in default settings ect ect.... I have a test url setup which inserts about 8 tasks into the queue. With short order, all 8 are completed properly. So far so good. The problem comes up when I re-load that url twice under say a minute. Now watching the task queue, all the tasks are added properly, but only the first batch execute it seems. But the "Run in Last Minute" # shows the right number of tasks being run.... The request logs tell a different story. They show only the first set of 8 running, but all task creation urls working successfully. The oddness of this is that if I wait say a minute between the task creation url requests, it will work fine. Oddly enough changing the bucket_size or execution speed does not seem to help. Only the first batch are executed. I have also reduced the number of requests all the way down to 2, and still found only the first 2 execute. Any others added display the same issues as above. Any suggestions? Thanks

  What is a good pattern for sharing data between related views?. I have an application where 1 form contains many small views, each views behaves independently from each other more or less (they communicate/interact via an event bus). Every so often I need to pass the same objects to the child views. Sometimes I need this same object to be passed to a child view and then the child passes it onto another child itself contains. What is a good approach to sharing this data between all the views contained within the parent form (view) ? I have looked into CAB and their approach and every "view" has a "root work item" this work item has dictionary that contains a shared "state" between the views that are contained. Is this the best approach? just a shared dictionary all the views under a root view can access? My current approach right now is to have a function on the view that allows one to set the object for that view. Something like view.SetCustomer(Customer c); then if the view contains a child view it knows to set it on the child view ala: this.childview1.SetCustomer(c); The application is written in C# 3.5, for winforms using MVP with structure map as a IoC/DI provider.

• Send HTTP 404 from Application_Error

  Hi, First of all, quickly what exactly I want to achieve: translate particular exception into the HTTP 404 so the ASP.NET can handle it further. When it is on then it never redirects to the page specified in customErrors: <error statusCode="404" redirect="404.html"/>. I also tried to raise new HttpExcepton(404, "Not Found") from the handler but then the response code is 200 which I don't understand why. So the questions are: What is the proper way of translating AnException into HTTP 404 response? How does customErrors section work when handling exceptions in Application_Error? • LINQ compiled query DataBind issue

  Hello All, I have a pretty extensive reporting page that uses LINQ. There is one main function that returns an IQueryable object. I then further filter / aggregate the returned query depending on the report the user needs. I changed this function to a compiled query, it worked great, and the speed increase was astonishing. The only problem comes when i want to databind the results. I am databinding to a standard asp.net GridView and it works fine, no problems. I am also databinding to an asp.net chart control, this is where my page is throwing an error. this works well: GridView gv = new GridView(); gv.DataSource = gridSource; But this does not: Series s1 = new Series("Series One"); s1.Points.DataBindXY(gridSource, "Month", gridSource, "Success"); The error i receive is this: System.NotSupportedException Specified method is not supported When i look into my gridSource var at run time i see this using a typical linq query: SELECT [t33].[value2] AS [Year], [t33].[value22] AS [Month], [t33].[value3] AS [Calls]...... I see this after i change the query to compiled: {System.Linq.OrderedEnumerable<<>f__AnonymousType15<string,int,int,int,int,int,int,int>,string>} This is obviously the reason why the databindxy is no longer working, but i am not sure how to get around it. • How do you word wrap a RichTextField for Blackberry

  I've been trying to modify a rich text field to display correctly in its half of the horizontal field. The goal is this: --------------------------- | address is | ***********| | very long | ** IMAGE **| | state, zip | ***********| --------------------------- Where address is a single string separate from the city and zip. I am modifying the address field like this: RichTextField addrField = new RichTextField(address) { public int getPreferredWidth() { return 200; } protected void layout(int maxWidth,int maxHeight) { super.layout(getPreferredWidth(),maxHeight); setExtent(getPreferredWidth(), getHeight()); } }; The results look like this: ----------------------------- | address is ve| ***********| | state, zip | ** IMAGE **| | | ***********| ----------------------------- where clearly the address is just going under the image. Both horizontal fields are static 200 pixels wide. It's not like the system wouldn't know where to wrap the address. However, I have heard it is not easy to do this and is not done automatically. I have had no success finding a direct answer online. I have found people saying you need to do it in a custom layout manager, some refer to the RichTextField API, which is of no use. But nobody actually mentions how to do it. I understand that I may need to read character by character and set where the line breaks should happen. What I don't know is how exactly to do any of this. You can't just count characters and assume each is worth 5 pixels, and you shouldn't have to. Surely there must be some way to achieve this in a way that makes sense. Any suggestions?

• WPF/Silverlight AutoCompleteBox with ability to add new values to list.

  Hi, I would like to use autocompletebox with a list of values, but also add new values to the list if a user enters one that isn't present. I currently have a string property in my view model called 'Comment'. Currently this is bound to a textbox in the view - user types a comment and the view model is updated. Simple. To save time, my customer would like it to autocomplete from previous values, so the way I thought to do this is something like: ViewModel public string Comment; public ObservableCollection<string> CommentsList { ... } (populate the CommentsList when the viewmodel is created) View <AutoCompleteComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding CommentsList}" SelectedItem="{Binding Comment, Mode=TwoWay/> So when the user selects a value, it saves the value in the Comment property. This works fine if the user selects an item in the list, but if the user types in a new value, the comment property is not updated (it is null because the selected item was not in the list).
