• Fixing permissions after FTPing ASP.NET code to a Linux system

  First off, I'm running Mono to run ASP.NET on Linux, but that's not the question. It appears that, every time I clear out my application directory and upload, I have to go back in and fix the permissions. What I'm doing is chmod -R -c 755 /var/www/* ...and there are two questions. What's the deal with having to do this every time I FTP? Feels flaky. Is there a better permissions set than 755? Do I want different permissions for the /bin directory? Or can I fix this all with one fell swoop of chown?

• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

My problem is that I need to format this UNIX timestamp into a format such as "1 day 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds ago", while also doing all the incrementation and ajax calls. I'm not very experienced with jquery/javascript, so I might be missing something basic.

• Implementing Skip List in C++

  [SOLVED] So I decided to try and create a sorted doubly linked skip list... I'm pretty sure I have a good grasp of how it works. When you insert x the program searches the base list for the appropriate place to put x (since it is sorted), (conceptually) flips a coin, and if the "coin" lands on a then that element is added to the list above it(or a new list is created with element in it), linked to the element below it, and the coin is flipped again, etc. If the "coin" lands on b at anytime then the insertion is over. You must also have a -infinite stored in every list as the starting point so that it isn't possible to insert a value that is less than the starting point (meaning that it could never be found.) To search for x, you start at the "top-left" (highest list lowest value) and "move right" to the next element. If the value is less than x than you continue to the next element, etc. until you have "gone too far" and the value is greater than x. In this case you go back to the last element and move down a level, continuing this chain until you either find x or x is never found. To delete x you simply search x and delete it every time it comes up in the lists. For now, I'm simply going to make a skip list that stores numbers. I don't think there is anything in the STL that can assist me, so I will need to create a class List that holds an integer value and has member functions, search, delete, and insert. The problem I'm having is dealing with links. I'm pretty sure I could create a class to handle the "horizontal" links with a pointer to the previous element and the element in front, but I'm not sure how to deal with the "vertical" links (point to corresponding element in other list?) If any of my logic is flawed please tell me, but my main questions are: How to deal with vertical links and whether my link idea is correct Now that I read my class List idea I'm thinking that a List should hold a vector of integers rather than a single integer. In fact I'm pretty positive, but would just like some validation. I'm assuming the coin flip would simply call int function where rand()%2 returns a value of 0 or 1 and if it's 0 then a the value "levels up" and if it's 0 then the insert is over. Is this incorrect? How to store a value similar to -infinite? Edit: I've started writing some code and am considering how to handle the List constructor....I'm guessing that on its construction, the "-infinite" value should be stored in the vectorname[0] element and I can just call insert on it after its creation to put the x in the appropriate place.

• Change page layout in the middle of a LaTeX document

  I'm looking for a way to change some page layout dimensions in the middle of a LaTeX document. The reason is, I'd like to have smaller margins and longer lines in the "References" section of my report document (basically because short lines aren't so important there and I can save space). In my preamble I have (works fine): \setlength\textwidth{130mm} \setlength\oddsidemargin{14.6mm} In the document I simply try to re-set them at the right point but they're ignored. ... last paragraph ends here. \newpage \setlength\textwidth{150mm} % +20mm text width \setlength\oddsidemargin{13.6mm} % -10mm left margin (so it stays centered) References ... The geometry package is useful but only for global adjustments in the preamble, so I can't use it here. Is it not possible to change the page layout at some point in the document?

• SQL/Schema comparison and upgrade

  I have a simple situation. A large organisation is using several different versions of some (desktop) application and each version has it's own database structure. There are about 200 offices and each office will have it's own version, which can be one of 7 different ones. The company wants to upgrade all applications to the latest versions, which will be version 8. The problem is that they don't have a separate database for each version. Nor do they have a separate database for each office. They have one single database which is handled by a dedicated server, thus keeping things like management and backups easier. Every office has it's own database schema and within the schema there's the whole database structure for their specific application version. As a result, I'm dealing with 200 different schema's which need to be upgraded, each with 7 possible versions. Fortunately, every schema knows the proper version so checking the version isn't difficult. But my problem is that I need to create upgrade scripts which can upgrade from version 1 to version 2 to version 3 to etc... Basically, all schema's need to be bumped up one version until they're all version 8. Writing the code that will do this is no problem. the challenge is how to create the upgrade script from one version to the other? Preferably with some automated tool. I've examined RedGate's SQL Compare and Altova's DatabaseSpy but they're not practical. Altova is way too slow. RedGate requires too much processing afterwards, since the generated SQL Script still has a few errors and it refers to the schema name. Furthermore, the code needs to become part of a stored procedure and the code generated by RedGate doesn't really fit inside a single procedure. (Plus, it's doing too much transaction-handling, while I need everything within a single transaction. I have been considering using another SQL Comparison tool but it seems to me that my case is just too different from what standard tools can deliver. So I'm going to write my own comparison tool. To do this, I'll be using ADOX with Delphi to read the catalogues for every schema version in the database, then use this to write the SQL Statements that will need to upgrade these schema's to their next version. (Comparing 1 with 2, 2 with 3, 3 with 4, etc.) I'm not unfamiliar with generating SQL-Script-Generators so I don't expect too many problems. And I'll only be upgrading the table structures, not any of the other database objects. So, does anyone have some good tips and tricks to apply when doing this kind of comparisons? Things to be aware of? Practical tips to increase speed?

• iPhone app works hundreds of times, then crashes from memory error on startup, then never works unti

  I have a Cocos2d/openGL iPhone game. It's a universal app and I'm dealing with an occasional but nasty error on the iPad. We are loading a lot of textures up front (3 2048x2048 textures). I'm working on reducing this up front load, but what worries me is I really don't understand the root cause of this crash that permanently breaks the app. This is the deal: 1. App works fine for hundreds of plays on the iPad 2. Eventually (I'm guessing due to other programs using up some memory and not letting go or whatever) the app starts crashing on startup. It just closes again in the middle of loading. 3. The App will now never work again on that iPad, closing immediately every time, until the iPad is restarted. Obviously my app is demanding too much memory up front to work reliably every time, I get that. What I don't get is why when it fails once, it has failed forever until the iPad is restarted. Can anyone explain what is going on here? EDIT: forgot to add organizer crash lags just say low memory, like this every time (I changed my app name to MyAppName below). • Gradients and memory

  I'm creating a drawing application with OpenGL. I'v created an algorithm that generates gradient textures. I then map these to my polygons and this works quite well. What I realized is how much memory this requires. Creating 1000 gradients takes about 800MB and that's way too much. Is there an alternative to textures, or a way to compress them, or another way to map gradients to polygons that doesn't use up as much memory? • How to display configurable product in each color in Magento product listing?

  I have a configurable product which is available in many different colors and sizes. I want the configurable product to appear once for every color. My idea is to assign one simple product of the configurable product in every color to the category of the configurable product. Then I want to change the listing, so that the (colored) simple product links to it's master product (the configurable one). The other way would be, to just assign the configurable product to a category and then list it multiple times with different colors. But I think this would be to complicated.

• Best way to show a loading screen in an iPhone app?

  I'm building what is essentially a web app. Every piece of data has to be fetched from a web API. So, every UITableView that I show takes some amount of time to fill with data and I'm struggling to find a good way to show the user a loading screen. Right now I'm popping up an action sheet, but that just seems a bit wrong. Ideally, I'd popup up a blank view over the tableview with "Loading..." on it, then fade it away when the data comes in, but I can't think of a way to do that in 8 places in my app without massive code duplication.

  Hello, A new question about android and services. Currently I'm developing a App that should send images to a server. It should also be possible to send more images parallel. I made a service that creates for every image a new image. The activity can bind to that service and gather information about the progress. I want to show the current status for every image in a notification (and when the user clicks a notification, an activity with the progress for that image should be shown). But I get several problems with that approach. There are errors with binding, the notification pending event starts the activity completly new, so I lose information about currently sending images and so on. Can someone plase tell me, how I could design such a problem in a appropriate way. thx

  I have to create 2 tables: Magazine ( 10 millions of rows with these columns: id, title, genres, printing, price ) Author ( 180 millions of rows with these columns: id, name, magazine_id ) . Every author can write on ONLY ONE magazine and every magazine has more authors. So if I want to know all authors of Motors Magazine, I have to use this query: SELECT * FROM Author, Magazine WHERE ( Author.id = Magazine.id ) AND ( genres = 'Motors' ) The same applies to Printing and Price column. To avoid these joins with tables of millions of rows, I thought to use this tables: Magazine ( 10 millions of rows with this column: id, title, genres, printing, price ) Author ( 180 millions of rows with this column: id, name, magazine_id, genres, printing, price ) . and this query: SELECT * FROM Author WHERE genres = 'Motors' Is it a good approach ?   I have thousands of lines of 1 to 100 numbers, every line define a group of numbers and a relationship among them. I need to get the sets of related numbers. Little Example: If I have this 7 lines of data T1 T2 T3 T4 T5 T6 T1 T5 T4 T3 T4 I need a not so slow algorith to know that the sets here are: T1 T2 T6 (because T1 is related with T2 in the first line and T1 related with T6 in the line 5) T3 T4 T5 (because T5 is with T4 in line 6 and T3 is with T4 in line 7) but when you have very big sets is painfully slow to do a search of a T(x) in every big set, and do unions of sets... etc. Do you have a hint to do this in a not so brute force manner? I'm trying to do this in python. Thanks

• MySQL Locking Up

  I've got a innodb table that gets a lot of reads and almost no writes (like, 1 write for every 400,000 reads approx). I'm running into a pretty big problem though when I do INSERT into the table. MySQL completely locks up. It uses 100% cpu, and every single other table (in other databases even) have their statuses set to "Locked" until the INSERT is done. This is a big problem because MySQL stays locked up for up to 4 minutes. I'm using version 5.1.47 (rpm from mysql.com). Any ideas?

• Twitter's Bootstrap 2.x popover callback can't focus on element

  I've modified bootstrap's popover function to include a callback which works great. But in the callback I cannot programmatically focus on the first form field. Strange, because I can manipulate other elements in the callback function as well as focus on the element at other points. • I would like to useJava 7's FileVisitor to walk up a tree

  I have looked and searched for some guidance on how to start at a low point in a path and walk up (or 'back'), until I find a folder with the name I am searching for. The FileVisitor class looks like it ought to be able to help me, but it only seems to work from head to toe. Is there something that someone could point me to? • How to automate the finding of an M value along a route

  Kirk Kuykendall had given a script example a few years back in an ESRI forum http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=996&t=88246&mc=4 as to how to find the M (measure) value of a point in a shapefile along a route when you clicked on the point. This is very handy, BUT..I have 1500 points that I need M values for. Is there a way to automate this type of thing? I need the M values for the points to create linear events on the route. Note: I am not a programmer, but have people who can help me out.

• Windows Service suddenly doing nothing

  Hi, My windows service is using a Thread (not a timer) which is always looping and sleeps for 1 second every loop using : evet.WaitOne(interval); When I start the service it works fine and I can see in the task manager that it is running, consuming and releasing memory, consuming processor ... etc that is all normal, but after a while (random amount of time) the service simply stops!! it is still there in the task manager but it is not consuming any processor work now and its consumption to the memory is not changing. it simply (died but still there in the task manager like a Zombie). I know that many exceptions might have happened during running the service (it is really doing many things) but all those exceptions are handled in Try catch blocks, so why is my "always looping" thread stops ??? This thread also logs every time he loops, when he is freezig in this way he is not logging anything (of course)
