• Asp.net Website Performance Improvement Checklist

  Hello Friends, I have asp.net website name http://www.go4sharepoint.com I have tried almost all ways to improve performance of this site, I have even check firebug and page speed addon on Firefox, but somehow i am not pleased with the result. I also tried like removing whitespace, remove viewstate, optimizing code which renders it, applied GZip, I have also no heavy session variables used, but still when i compare with other popular websites it is not upto the mark. I have check CodeProject website and was surprise that even though they have lot of stuff displayed there website is loading fast and they also have good loading rate. To all experts, Please suggest me where i am going wrong in my development. Thank you.

• Storing links to internal content pages in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm using a route like this routes.MapRoute( "PageBySlug", RouteType.Regular, "{slug}", new {controller = "Page", action = "Display", slug = "Default"}, null ); to map request to ~/Some-Page-Slug to ~/Page/Display/Some-Page-Slug. When adding content, user can choose to link to existing pages to create references and I then store those links in this format in the datastore: "/Some-Page-Slug". When I run the app in Cassini and pull the link out from datastore and attach it to A tag it looks like this http://localhost:93229/Some-Page-Slug and this link works. But when running the application in virtual directory under some website in IIS, the attached link generates this URL http://localhost/Some-Page-Slug, when it should be http://localhost/virtualdir/Some-Page-Slug. Of course, this generates 404 error. How can I solve this to be universally useful and working under all circumstances? Should I store it differently in the database or should I transform it into correct form in my Views at runtime and how to do that?

• ASP.Net Web Site Project - Errors Not Caught at Compile time

  For the first time in my career, I'm working on an ASP.Net (v3.5) project that has been set up as a Visual Studio 2008/10 Web Site Project. I'm not keen on this way of working this way for various reasons but for the moment and until such time as the company sees the virtue in working in an environment with namespaces, designer and project files etc., I have to continue with the existing codebase. I've run into some odd issues since I began this but perhaps the oddest one of all is that althought VS lets me build the code, it doesn't reliably pick up compilation errors so these are not noticed until runtime. I know the website model allows dynamic/hot compilation when a request is made for a specific but I can't see why it wouldn't do this when I manually (F5) build/rebuild the project. Its immensely annoying as you can imagine and I can't find a workaround. Could any StackOverflow person help with suome suggestions to make things better?

I've removed the entry for 403 in IIS (7.0) as a desperate last attempt and unsuprisingly that made no difference. I've run out of ideas now so any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated!

  I am trying to create a new website on a remote server via msbuild (I like to call it "msdeploy"). I've downloaded and used the SDC tasks, the MSBuildExtension tasks and the MSBuildCommunity tasks but I simply can't get it right. I figure that WebDirectorySetting (from MSBuild.Community.Tasks.IIS) is my best bet but I can't find the right SettingName to pass. I'd like to use some sort of MSBuild task to accomplish this but maybe it just doesn't exist. Custom VBS or WMI are my last resort... Thanks

  Hi For my web application, I want a 10*10 (100 cells which is created dynamically) grid to be displayed in the following manner. 0) Initially all the cells' color is green. 1) If i click on any cell its color becomes red if it is green and if i click again it becomes red.(Toggle the cell color) 2) I should be able to display dynamic number of link buttons in each cell.On the click of which it pop ups a window. Are there any control available for this? Or how can i implement this functionality. I am using ASP.net 3.5.

• ASP.Net: Finding the cause of OutOfMemoryExpcetions

  I trying to track down the cause of an OutOfMemory for a website. This site has ~12,000 .aspx pages and the last time it crashed I captured a memory dump using adplus. After some investigation I found a lot of heap fragmentation, there are around 100MB of Free blocks which can't be assigned. Digging deeper one of the Large Object Heaps is fragmented and the causes seems to be String interning as described [here][1] Could this be caused by the number of pages in the site? As they are all compiled they sit in memory and by looking at the dump they are interned and PINNED which I think means they stick around for a while. I would find this odd as there are many sites with more pages, but dynamic compilation could account for the growth in memory. What other methods are there for finding the cause of the memory leak?   We've started using the ASP.NET recaptcha control and it works fine. but one of the requirements we have is that all outbound traffic goes over Https. I know that recaptcha supports https, but It's not clear how to configure (or even if it is configurable) when using the ASP.NET plugin option. has anyone got any experience of this? I'll expand a little on what I've found so far.... The Recaptcha package contains 3 public classes RecaptchaControl, RecaptchaValidator and RecaptchaResponse RecaptchaControl is an Asp.NET control, the recaptcha specific methods on there seem to be concerning themes/look and feel. An instance of the Validator has a RemoteIP field (which I presume would represent the verification server), but I can't a way of binding that to the control. RecaptchaResponse seems to more or less represent an enum with possible responses (valid/invalid/failed to connect).

  hello, i run a social networking site written in asp.net and would like to open it to developers using the OpenSocial APIs. I have read information on opensocial.org as well as google's opensocial page and have a basic idea what it takes but still there is a lot of info missing to even get started. I know i gotta provide RESTful API as well as JavaScript API, authenticating using OAuth methods. Does my container has to provide all 3: JSON, XML, and AtomPub representations of data? I found Shindig but it runs under Apache, i need something for IIS. Are there any libraries that i could use as a base for my APIs to save time? Is it even recommended to write the entire container from scratch? thanks

  I have UserControl, which is used for editing fields of some object. I had a page with this control, where user filled the fields, pressed "Submit" and object inserted in DB. And everything was Ok. But now user wants to insert several objects by one submit. So I need to implement dynamic adding of this control. What is the simpliest way to do it? The only way I see is to specify "+" button and to create control in its OnClick handler. But it is very dull. I think it is very common issue and there are better variants.

  Hi, on our site we do url rewriting to generate massive amounts of database generated pages. on every page, there is a Login control for users. like this: Internal aspx page: /DB.aspx?id=123 User visible url: /ABC/123.aspx, /ABC/456.aspx ... (url rewritten) unfortunately, the tag on each page has an action attribute of "DB.aspx?id=123". when the user clicks the button the browser is posting to /ABC/DB.aspx?id=123 which of course does not exist. solutions i tried: 1. change the action attribute by subclassing HtmlForm. this destroys the all other forms on the site. 2. remove the action attribute (so that the browser is always posting to the same url). this works on the rewritten pages but on "/" (the default.aspx in the root dir) i get a message that the verb post is not allowed on "/" (iis 6 and i have no control over mappings) anybody?

  I am trying to enable Windows Authentication on my IIS 6.0 Server with some client technology and Oracle DB server. When I load the ASPX page and have unchecked Anonymous Access and checked Integrated Windows Authentication, I can see my LOGON_USER credentials on the server via tracing. I am now trying to see if the same user can read data from a LINUX-based Oracle server. I can't seem to pass over the credentials! How can I connect to Oracle? Anything special I should know about in terms of web.config files? Another question is, I'm assuming the Oracle server should be 'hooked' to Active Directory? How about manually adding users to the allowed tables? What about Oracle's LDAP, OID? Can anyone direct me to a good link for reference?

• Upload/Download files with ASP.Net using Visual Studio Web Server

  I need to upload image files and store them on the webserver, then be able to display them in html. I'm currently using AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory to get a path to read and write files. Firefox won't display the image as I just get an img tag with "src='C:...' Is it possible to read/write files like this with Visual Studio web server? I know it'll be possible with IIS, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to (pretty new to web development) I'm implementing this with ASP.Net MVC 2, but I don't think that is relevant.

  looking at different sites, i see conflicting conventions. if you want to have links to images, other pages, js files, i have seen: URL.Content("~/scripts/myscript.js"); <a href="/scripts/msscripts.js"> <img src="../../content/stylesheet.css"> <img src="../content/stylesheet.css"> these all seem to work in asp.net mvc but it seems like there are all doing slightly different things. I am moving to a new webserver where they are changing from iis redirecting to isapi rewriting and i was told to make sure my links were done in a correct way or the site not work. Can someone clarify what the "correct" way is ?

  I am running IIS 6.0 on an XP OS using VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 (Full install). I developed two web apps. Both of these I can run from IIS by setting them to the default website. However, now I tried adding an index.htm file. Real simple; all it has is two hyperlinks to these web apps. But now only the first web app works. The first web app is pure VS. The second web app modifies an Adventureworks database table. But now when I click the hyperlink for the second web app, it gives me the error below. However this error doesn't make sense to me cause I have the two web apps configured as two virtual directories beneath C:\inetpub\ and the index.htm file is also beneath C:\inetpub. And the default website is set to home directory C:\inetpub\ with Document index.htm on top. Also, why does the first web app work and not the second now? Server Error in '/AddFileToSQL' Application. The path '/AddFileToSQL/App_GlobalResources/' maps to a directory outside this application, which is not supported. And at another day when a new logfileDate created i want to mail the previous day Logfile and delete that file after sending. Everything happened but when It is going to delete its shows file is accessed by another process. So I need to refresh that folder after sending mail so that it got free with buffer. I'm not using IIS and i dont want it to use.

• Way around ASP.NET session being shared across multiple tab windows

  I'm storing some value in an asp.net session on the first page. On the next page, this session value is being read. However if multiple tabs are opened and there are multiple page 1-page 2 navigation going on, the value stored in session gets mixed up since the session is shared between the browser tabs. I'm wondering what are the options around this : Query String: Passing value between the pages using query string, I don't want to take this approach since there can be multiple anchor tags on page 1 linking to page 2 and I can not rewrite the URLs of each tag since they are dynamic. Cookies??? In-memory cookies are shared across browser tabs too, same as the session cookie, rite ? Any other option?

  HI, We are developing a multi-tenant application in Asp.Net with separate DB for each tenant, in which one of the requirement is to monitor the bandwidth usage for each tenant, i have tried to search but not found much help on the topic,we want to monitor exactly how much bandwidth is being used for each tenant while each tenant can have its own top level domain or a sub domain or a combination of both. so what are the available options, the ones which i can think of can be 1. IIS Log Monitoring means a separate application which will calculate the bandwidth for each tenant. 2. Log Each Request and Response for a tenant from within the application and then calculate the total bandwidth usage based on that. 3. Use some third part components if available So what do you think will be the best approach, also if there is any other way to do this.

• Adding code to the beginning / end of methods in runtime dynamically

  I know instrumentation is a technique to add trace code dynamically into the methods to enable tracing and debugging. I was wondering if this is only a "Trace" option, hard coded into the CLR to add only trace code, or is there the ability to add any code to the methods? For example, I want to check for a condition in the beginning of every single method call in a certain class (say for permissions). Can I do this via adding dynamic code to the beginning of the methods in execution time? I'm not sure how this trace "instrumentation" thing works, but I'm wondering if this can be used for other goals too, or not.
