• ASP.NET MVC 2 - How do I use DropDownListFor ?

  I have a simple model / view with things like Username, Password etc. and use helpers fine to hook it up. I now have a field called "NumberOfChildren". I want to store a number in it (int) and I want it render a dropdown box containing "None", "1", "2" etc. My thoughts would be that the model would have a list or a method that returns a list, so I can specify the values such as NumberOfChildren_List that I put the data into, and then DropDownListFor pulls that list and renders it, matching the value to the value of the item in the dropdown. However after spending about 30 minutes on trying to figure out how on earth it works, I gave up and decided to ask here. Any ideas? • Behavior of <- NULL on lists versus data.frames for removing data

  Many R users eventually figure out lots of ways to remove elements from their data. One way is to use NULL, particularly when you want to do something like drop a column from a data.frame or drop an element from a list. Eventually, a user comes across a situation where they want to drop several columns from a data.frame at once, and they hit upon <- list(NULL) as the solution (since using <- NULL will result in an error). A data.frame is a special type of list, so it wouldn't be too tough to imagine that the approaches for removing items from a list should be the same as removing columns from a data.frame. • How can I have 2 ADO access methods use the same Transaction?

  I'm writing a test to see if my LINQ to Entity statement works.. I'll be using this for others if I can get this concept going.. my intention here is to INSERT a record with ADO, then verify it can be queried with LINQ, and then ROLLBACK the whole thing at the end. I'm using ADO to insert because I don't want to use the object or the entity model that I am testing. I figure that a plain ADO INSERT should do fine. problem is.. they both use different types of connections. is it possible to have these 2 different data access methods use the same TRANSACTION so I can roll it back?? _conn = new SqlConnection(_connectionString); _conn.Open(); _trans = _conn.BeginTransaction(); var x = new SqlCommand("INSERT INTO Table1(ID, LastName, FirstName, DateOfBirth) values('127', 'test2', 'user', '2-12-1939');", _conn); x.ExecuteNonQuery(); //So far, so good. • Apache + Passenger not passing on custom status codes

  I'm currently building an API. This API communicates with the client via status codes. I created several custom status codes (as per http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec6.html#sec6) in order to inform the client on certain things. For example I introduced the 481 status code to signify a specific client error. The Rails app I wrote works like a charm. But when Apache and Passenger are serving it things run aground. When I provoke a 481 error the response header looks like this: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error Date: Wed, 19 May 2010 06:37:05 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) Phusion_Passenger/2.2.5 mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8g X-Powered-By: Phusion Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) 2.2.5 Cache-Control: no-cache X-Runtime: 1938 Set-Cookie: _session_id=32bc259dc763193ad57ae7dc19d5f57e; path=/; HttpOnly Content-Length: 62 Status: 481 Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8 As you can see the original Status header is still there almost a the end. But the 'true' status header (the very first line) is quiet different. It seems that Apache doesn't like Status headers it has no knowledge of and thus assumes an error. Is there anyway to fix this? Maybe via the mod_headers ( http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_headers.html) module? I don't know enough of Apache to figure this out on my own. Thanks,

• Is it possible to parameterize a MEF import?

  I am relatively new to MEF so I don't fully understand the capabilities. I'm trying to achieve something similar to Unity's InjectionMember. Let's say I have a class that imports MEF parts. For the sake of simplicity, let's take the following class as an example of the exported part. [Export] [PartCreationPolicy(CreationPolicy.NonShared)] public class Logger { public string Category { get; set; } public void Write(string text) { } } public class MyViewModel { [Import] public Logger Log { get; set; } } Now what I'm trying to figure out is if it's possible to specify a value for the Category property at the import. Something like: public class MyViewModel { [MyImportAttribute(Category="MyCategory")] public Logger Log { get; set; } } public class MyOtherViewModel { [MyImportAttribute(Category="MyOtherCategory")] public Logger Log { get; set; } } For the time being, what I'm doing is implementing IPartImportsSatisfiedNotification and setting the Category in code. But obviously I would rather keep everything neatly in one place.

• iOS Switching an embedded view in storyboard

  I have been trying to figure this out all day and I know it should be able to be done, but being new to iOS development using Objective-C and not Appcelerator I'm having newbie issues. What I am trying to accomplish is to have an embedded view in one of my other views, but to be able to switch which view is embedded through programming. I am using storyboards. When I tried to use the view container it displays the attached view, but I cannot attach multiple views to the container in the storyboard. I drew up an image, but to my annoyance I cannot post an image on here because I don't have enough "rep" points, so I posted it on my site: http://static.c6gx.com/images/iphone-embedded-views-diagram.jpg Later on I would like what appears to be a push segue, within that view container, but first I just want to be able to switch between embedded view 1, 2, 3, etc. Am I supposed to be using a view container to accomplish this, or some other type of controller? Then how would I call the transition to change the view? Thank you for any help you can provide.

• PHP script stops running arbitrarily with no errors.

  I was working on a fairly long script that seemed to stop running after about 20 minutes. After days of trying to figure out why, I decided to make a very simple script to see how long it would run without any complex code to confuse me. I found that the same thing was happening with this simple infinite loop. At some point between 15 and 25 minutes of running, it simply stopped. There is no error output at all. The bottom of the browser simply says "Done" and nothing else is processed. I've been over every single possible thing I could think of... set_time_limit, session.gc_maxlifetime in the php.ini as well as memory_limit and max_execution_time. The point that the script is stopped is never consistent. Sometimes it will stop at 15 minutes, sometimes 22 minutes, sometimes 17... But it's always long enough to be a PITA to test. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. It is hosted on a 1and1 server. I contacted them and they couldn't help me... but I have a feeling they just didn't know enough.

  I'd like to cancel a .load() operation, when the load() does not return in 5 seconds. If it's so I show an error message like 'sorry, no picture loaded'. • getSharedPreferences not working for me with concerns to ListPreferences and Integers

  I'm stuck at a point where I'm trying to get my project to read a preference value (from a ListPreference listing) and then use that value in a basic mathematical subtraction instance. The problem is that the "seek" preference is not being seen by my Java code, and yet the default value is (I've tried the default value with 3000 and now 0). Am i missing something, is there a bug here, known or unknown? • Combining JSON Arrays

  I have 3 json arrays, each with information listed in the same format: Array: ID: NAME: DATA: ID: NAME: DATA: etc... My goal is to combine all 3 arrays into one array, and sort and display by NAME by passing the 3 arrays into a function. The function I've tried is: JSCRIPT Call: // to save time I'm just passing the name of the array, I've tried passing // the full array name as json[0]['DATA'][array_1][0]['NAME'] as well. combineNames(['array_1','array_2']); FUNCTION: function combineNames(names) { var allNames = [] for (i=0;i<names.length;i++) { for (j=0;j<json[0]['DATA'][names[i]].length;j++) { allNames.push(json[0]['DATA'][names[i]][j]['NAME']); } } return allNames.sort(); } The above gives me the error that NAME is null or undefined. I've also tried using the array.concat function which works when I hard code it: var names = []; var allNames = []; var names = names.concat(json[0]['DATA']['array_1'],json[0]['DATA']['array_2']); for (i=0;i<names.length;i++) { allNames.push(names[i]['NAME']); } return allNames.sort(); But I can't figure out how to pass in the arrays into the function (and if possible I would like to just pass in the array name part instead of the whole json[0]['DATA']['array_name'] like I was trying to do in the first function...

• Interpolating data points in Excel

  Hi, I'm sure this is the kind of problem other have solved many times before. A group of people are going to do measurements (Home energy usage to be exact). All of them will do that at different times and in different intervals. So what I'll get from each person is a set of {date, value} pairs where there are dates missing in the set. What I need is a complete set of {date, value} pairs where for each date withing the range a value is known (either measured or calculated). I expect that a simple linear interpolation would suffice for this project. If I assume that it must be done in Excel. What is the best way to interpolate in such a dataset (so I have a value for every day) ? Thanks. NOTE: When these datasets are complete I'll determine the slope (i.e. usage per day) and from that we can start doing home-to-home comparisons. ADDITIONAL INFO After first few suggestions: I do not want to manually figure out where the holes are in my measurement set (too many incomplete measurement sets!!). I'm looking for something (existing) automatic to do that for me. So if my input is {2009-06-01, 10} {2009-06-03, 20} {2009-06-06, 110} Then I expect to automatically get {2009-06-01, 10} {2009-06-02, 15} {2009-06-03, 20} {2009-06-04, 50} {2009-06-05, 80} {2009-06-06, 110} Yes, I can write software that does this. I am just hoping that someone already has a "ready to run" software (Excel) feature for this (rather generic) problem.

• How can I get type information at runtime from a DMP file in a Windbg extension?

  This is related to my previous question, regarding pulling objects from a dmp file. As I mentioned in the previous question, I can successfully pull object out of the dmp file by creating wrapper 'remote' objects. I have implemented several of these so far, and it seems to be working well. However I have run into a snag. In one case, a pointer is stored in a class, say of type 'SomeBaseClass', but that object is actually of the type 'SomeDerivedClass' which derives from 'SomeBaseClass'. For example it would be something like this: MyApplication!SomeObject +0x000 field1 : Ptr32 SomeBaseClass +0x004 field2 : Ptr32 SomeOtherClass +0x008 field3 : Ptr32 SomeOtherClass I need someway to find out what the ACTUAL type of 'field1' is. If you follow my other question, I need this type information so I know what type of wrapper remote classes to create. I figure it might end up being some sort of case-statement, where I have to match a string to a type? I am ok with that, but I still don't know where I can get that string that represents the type of the object in question (ie SomeObject-field1 in the above example).

• Help with why my app crashed?

  I'm writing an iPad app that is a "kiosk" app. The iPad should be hanging on the wall and the app should just run. I did a test, starting the app last night (Friday, December 31) and letting it run. This morning, when I woke up, it was not running. I just checked the iPad's console and I can't figure out why it crashed. The iPad was plugged in and so the battery is not the issued. I did disable the idleTimer in my application delegate. The app was seen running as late as midnight last night. I would like to note that my app acts as a Bluetooth server through Game Kit and large portion of the console output is occupied by bluetooth status messages. When I opened the iPad, the app was paused and there was a system alert which prompted me to check an "Expiring Provisioning Profile". I tapped "dismiss" and the alert went away. The app crashed about a second after I dismissed the system alert. Any ideas how I can diagnose this problem? Why would my app crash? Here is my iPad's Console log, as copied from Xcode's organizer. Edit: A bit of Googling lead me to this site which says that alert views cause the app to lose focus. Could that be involved? What can I do to fix the problem? EDIT2: My Crash log describes the situation as: Application Specific Information: appname failed to resume in time Elapsed total CPU time (seconds): 10.010 (user 8.070, system 1.940), 100% CPU Elapsed application CPU time (seconds): 9.470, 95% CPU

• PyGTK: Trouble with size of ScrolledWindow

  Hi everyone! I am using PyGTK and the gtk.Assistant. On one page I have placed a treeview (one column, just strings) in a gtk.ScrolledWindow (I wanted the vertical scrollbar, since the list contains about 35 items). Everything is working fine; the only thing that bugs me is that I have not been able to figure out from the documentation how to set the size of the scrolled window. Currently only three items are displayed at a time; I would like to set this number to 10 or so. Below is the code. • VS 2008 debugger: How does it decide what Cassini port to run a web service under?

  I have a VS 2008 solution that includes a web site and a web service. I'm developing both at once, and it's helpful to be able to debug from one into the other. It occasionally can't find the web service. If I look in the web.config, I find the port number it's looking at is not the port number it auto-runs the service in when I use the debugger. For example, the web.config reference says something like: add key="mynamespace.mywebservice" value="http://localhost:55765/mywebservice.asmx" When I hover over the Cassini port icon, I find that the web service is running in port 55382 (or some other non-55765 port). No wonder it can't find it. Is there a way to enforce that the port number it runs under is the one specified in the web config? And if it's not using the web config port number to figure out where to run it... where does it decide? I know in VS2005, there was a way to specify the port number to use when debugging, but I can't find that anywhere in the web service project in VS 2008. This is really going to cause problems as more developers come on to this project - how can I fix it? Deleting and re-adding the web services to the project fixes it, but I'd literally have to do it a couple times a day, not an ideal solution.

• Learning Java, how to type text on canvas?

  I'm reading a book by Eric Roberts - Art and science of java and it got an excersise that I can't figure out - You have to make calendar, with GRect's, 7 by 6, that goes ok, the code part is easy, but also you have to type the numbers of the date on those rectangles, and it's kinda hard for me, there is nothing about it in the book. I tried using GLabel thing, but here arises the problem that I need to work on those numbers, and it says "can't convert from int to string and vice versa". GLabel (string, posX, posY) - it is not accepting int as a parameter, only string, I even tried typecasting, still not working. For example I want to make a loop int currentDate = 1; while (currentDate < 31) { add(new Glabel(currentDate, 100, 100); currentDate++; This code is saying that no man, can't convert int to string. If i try changing currentDate to string, it works, but I got a problem with calculation, as I can't manipulate with number in string, it doesn't even allow to typecast it into int. How can I fix it? Maybe there is another class or method to type the text over those rectangles? I know about println but it doen't have any x or y coordinates, so I can't work with it. And I think it's only for console programs.

• How can I intelligently group rows of integers for a faceted search?

  I'm not even quite sure what terms I should be using for what I want, so any advice on what I'm even asking for would be very welcome. Basically, my web site lists user-generated accommodations. Each has a rent price, which users will be able to query in our new faceted search box. Users search by city, and within each city I'd like to present a different rent grouping. That is to say that in City #1, if we have listings ranging from $200 - $1000, I'd like to present checkboxes for: less than $300 $301 - $500 $501 - $700 more than $700 However, if City #2 has values that range from $500 - $1500, I want the ranges above to change accordingly. So, if I say that I want 5 or 6 range options in each city, I think I have two options: Take the min and max values and just split the difference. I don't like this idea because one listing with a rent of $10,000 will throw the whole scale off. Intelligently calculate the ranges using means, medians etc. Number 2 is what I need help with. I'm a web developer that gets logic, but was never strong on math and statistics at school. Can anyone point me towards a guide that'll help me figure this out?

• Can not open ports in iptables on CentOS 5??

  I am trying to open up ports in CentOS's firewall and am having a terrible go at it. I have followed the "HowTo" here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables as well as a few other places on the Net but I still can't get the bloody thing to work. Basically I wanted to get two things working: VNC and Apache over the internal network. The problem is that the firewall is blocking all attempts to connect to these services. Now if I issue service iptables stop and then try to access the server via VNC or hit the webserver everything works as expected. However the moment I turn iptables back on all of my access is blocked. Below is a truncated version of my iptables file as it appears in vi -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 5801 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 5901 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 6001 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 5900 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT Really I would just be happy if I could get port 80 opened up for Apache since I can do most stuff via putty but if I could figure out VNC as well that would be cool. As far as VNC goes there is just a single/user desktop that I am trying to connect to via: [ipaddress]:1 Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• How to start/stop/restart jQuery animation

  I have the following function that when I call displays a message to the user for a certain amount of time (5 secs in my case). During this "period" if I call the function again to display another message, practically it should hide, then re-appear with the new message for another 5 seconds. What happens with my code below, I call the function to display the message. Then, lets say on the 4th second, I call it again to display another message, the new message is displayed for 1 second. I need to somehow -reset- the time but can't figure out how. Tried stopping the animation, checking if the element was visible and hiding it if it was, and many other things. I believe the solution is a simple chaining issue but can't get it right.   I was dealing with hibernate, trying to figure out the run-time class behind proxied instances by using the visitor pattern. I then came up with an AbstractVisitable approach, but I wonder if it will always produce correct results. I was worried that the code under certain circumstances would print class AbstractVisible. Yet the code above outputs class ConcreteVisitable, even though I hid the real type behind a dynamic proxy (the most difficult case I could come up with). Is the abstract visitor approach above guaranteed to work, or are there some pitfalls with this approach? What guarantees are given in Java with respect to the this pointer?

  Hi everybody, I've got a piece of code that logs into Facebook, gets a session, sets status_update and offline_access permission if they are not set, and gets a new session with the newly set permissions. This code used to work fine but now I'm getting error 100 "One of the parameters specified was missing or invalid" as a response to the second call to get session and I can't figure out why. Here's the sequence in detail: CREATE TOKEN restserver.php?method=auth.createToken&api_key=[our key]&v=1.0&format=JSON&sig=[sig created with our secret] response: new token LOGIN m.facebook.com/login.php?api_key=[our key]&v=1.0&auth_token=[token created above] login screen loads and user successfully logs in with their username/password. • DDD and MVC Models hold ID of separate entity or the entity itself?

  If you have an Order that references a customer, does the model include the ID of the customer or a copy of the customer object like a value object (thinking DDD)? I would like to do ths: public class Order { public int ID {get;set;} public Customer customer {get;set;} ... } right now I do this: public class Order { public int ID {get;set;} public int customerID {get;set;} ... } It would be more convenient to include the complete customer object rather than an ID to the View Model passed to the form. Otherwise, I need to figure out how to get the vendor information to the view that the order references by ID. This also implies that the repository understand how to deal with the customer object that it finds within the order object when they call save (if we select the first option). If we select the second option, we will need to know where in the view model to put it. It is certain they will select an existing customer. However, it is also certain they may want to change the information in-place on the display form. One could argue to have the controller extract the customer object, submit customer changes separately to the repository, then submit changes to the order, keeping the customerID in the order.

  I'm looking to figure out the best way to execute a database query using the least amount of boilerplate code. I'm already in the habit of factoring out the establishment of a connection, which would yield code more like the following. Can this be reduced further? In particular, I'd like to do something about the first two lines of the procedure. I don't feel like the method should be in charge of creating the SqlCommand. It's a tiny piece of repetition as it is in the example, but it seems to grow if transactions are being managed manually or timeouts are being altered or anything like that.
