• Sending Facebook notifications

  Hey i have a little facebook iframe application written with rails and the facebooker plugin. I can loop through the users friends and see whether they also have this application. To do this I use a fql qeury, and my own html (no fbml). Now i want to create a button right beside every friend who doesn't have this app, that sends an invite massage. Is it possible to do this without this FBML/JS voodoo? I looked through the RESTful api but the only thing i could found was this deprecated method :( Can someone provide me an code example on how to do this? I really don't want to use this FBML stuff because it doesn't fit into the ui concept of the app, but if that the only way, please explain how to do this (every fbml tag I've tried is just invisible :( ) Thanks a lot.

  The following C# WCF based REST service gives me some undesired headers that I'm not sure if I can remove them trough the API.   I'm getting pretty frustrated figuring out how to add a lowercase header field to an NSMutableURLRequest. NSMutableURLRequest *urlRequest = [NSMutableURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:MyURLString]]; [urlRequest setValue:@"aValue" forHTTPHeaderField:@"field"]; In the example above, "field" get's switched to "Field," since the header field names are case insensitive. I wouldn't think this should happen, but it does. The API I am working with is case sensitive, so my GET request is ignored. Is there any way to override the case switch? Thanks

• Reading from compressed lucene index

  I created a lucene index and compressed the index directory with bz2 or zip. I donot want to uncompress it. Is there any API call that can read the index from this zipped directory and thus allow searching and other functionalities. That is, can lucence IndexReader read the index from a compressed file. I saw that Lucnene IndexReader does not support "Reader" to open the index, otherwise I would have created a Reader class that uncompresses the file and streams the uncompressed version. • Having an issue with Onejar-Maven-Plugin

  I am trying to package a simple maven java project (uses javax.persistence api) into a single jar using the onejar-maven-plugin. • Hooking up Sproutcore frontend and custom Python backend

  Hello everyone, I am building a web-based application. The frontend has been designed in Sproutcore. For the backend, we have our own python API which handles all transactions with multiple databases. What is the best way to hook up the front-end with the back-end. AFAIK django is pretty monolithic (correct me if i am wrong) and it would be cumbersome if I dont use its native ORM...I would prefer a python-based solution..any ideas? thanks! Suvir

  Hi, I'm developing an application in Rails and want the user to be able to signup and provide their card details on one form. I'm using the Braintree API and their transparent redirect, which means that the form data is posted directly to Braintree. How can I store and later retrieve the non-payment related information provided by the user from that form e.g. account name, username? • Loading dynamic content and rewrite URL on Hashchange event with Jquery Mobile

  I'm building a mobile version for my website using Jquery Mobile API. The framework provides automate AJAX navigation processing. But as far as i know it require "real" pages for loading purpose. What i want to do is override the automate navigation process of it and process the hashchange on my own. But i can't not rewrite the url using window.hashChange, which is running well on my non-mobile website version : $(function () { $(window).off().hashchange(function () { if (location.hash.length > 1) { PageSelect(); } }); $(window).hashchange(); }); I just only want to take advantage on jquery mobile interfaces, i don't want anything with its automate ajax navigation stuff ! • How do I call window.openDatabase from a webView hosted in an android application?

  I created a native Android app that basically hosts a webView control. That webView is then used to load a page that calls window.openDatabase from JavaScript. I can successfully confirm that the API exists by verifying window.openDatabase. Calling this method returns a null when called in a hosted webView control. Calling the same method in the Android Browser returns an instance of the database. Does anyone know the permessions in the manifest or settings on the webView control that need to be set to access the database? Is this even possible in a native app.

• Generating Google Maps markers using Ruby

  I would like to do a very simple task: add some markers in a Google Map using a list of addresses from an array. I have been thinking about generating the Google Maps JavaScript API code using ruby (printf) but this does not seem like a very clean and beautiful solution... I have read about YM4R for Ruby on Rails... my project is pretty simple and I have never worked with Ruby on Rails... I have also never used JQuerry... but I am very willing to learn to use this tools :) What do you think will be the best approach to generating the markers?

• How to create an Audio CD using C# or Java

  I'm looking for an API that would allow me to create an audio CD from within a C# application. The CDs are to be created and closed in the same session (no rewrite required). Basically, my application locates files on behalf of a user, and, if a blank CD is present in the drive, creates an audio CD for the user. If no CD is present, it checks to see if there's a USB drive attached and copies the files there (this part I already know how to do). I would prefer to write this application in either C# or Java, as I'm most comfortable with those, but I don't know how hard it would be to create CDs using either language. There are several other questions here that deal with regular CDs, but I didn't see any discussing audio CDs.

• Programmatic DNS

  I'm a long time developer but not very experienced with DNS. Here's my problem: Our app launches servers on Amazon EC2 for clients. One client wants to use custom DNS's for every server launched instead of the normal long public DNS provided by AWS: for example server-5.demo.ourclient.com, server-6.demo.ourclient.com. What's the easiest/cleanest/best way to solve this challenge from inside our application that launches the servers and knows the Amazon public DNS? We can probably get control of demo.ourclient.com as well.... Are there nice hosted solutions with API's? Would we need to manage a DNS server for *.demo.ourclient.com? Thanks! Chad

• Extracting pure content / text from HTML Pages by excluding navigation and chrome content

  Hi, I am crawling news websites and want to extract News Title, News Abstract (First Paragraph), etc I plugged into the webkit parser code to easily navigate webpage as a tree. To eliminate navigation and other non news content I take the text version of the article (minus the html tags, webkit provides api for the same). Then I run the diff algorithm comparing various article's text from same website this results in similar text being eliminated. This gives me content minus the common navigation content etc. Despite the above approach I am still getting quite some junk in my final text. This results in incorrect News Abstract being extracted. The error rate is 5 in 10 article i.e. 50%. Error as in Can you Suggest an alternative strategy for extraction of pure content, Would/Can learning Natural Language rocessing help in extracting correct abstract from these articles ? How would you approach the above problem ?. Are these any research papers on the same ?. Regards Ankur Gupta

  How would you go about constructing a step by step form that uses AJAX through Drupal to pull the next form step? For example, Step 1: I like Baseball I don't like Baseball. When that person clicks on either Like or Don't Like, I want to use AJAX to recognize and pull the next part of the form, remove/hide the first section since its not needed, and present the next section. Example: Step 1: I like Baseball *click (fade out) Step 2: My favorite team is __________ The player I like most is __________ What is the best way to do this through Drupal Form API? I know how to build the forms and modules, but I have never used AJAX yet. I know a few things exist out there that are supposed to help, but I wanted to know if anyone here has done it and how they approached it.

• How does the same origin policy apply to IP addresses

  I have a server on our company intranet that runs JBoss. I want to send API calls to this server from my machine, also on the intranet, and get the resulting XML responses using JQuery. I read the entry on Wikipedia but am confused how that applies to my situation, since our machines only have IP addresses, not domain names. I have server URL: 10.2.200.3:8001/serviceroot/service client IP address: 10.2.201.217 My questions are: As far as I understand these are different domains, right? So I have to use a proxy to issue JQuery.ajax calls to the server If I want to avoid doing (2), can I install Apache on the server and server the page with JS code form there? But then the JS will be from 10.2.200.3 and the server is at 10.2.200.3:8001. Aren't these considered different domains according to policy? Thanks!

  I would like to extract the GPS EXIF tag from pictures using php. I'm using the exif_read_data() that returns a array of all tags + data : GPS.GPSLatitudeRef: N GPS.GPSLatitude:Array ( [0] => 46/1 [1] => 5403/100 [2] => 0/1 ) GPS.GPSLongitudeRef: E GPS.GPSLongitude:Array ( [0] => 7/1 [1] => 880/100 [2] => 0/1 ) GPS.GPSAltitudeRef: GPS.GPSAltitude: 634/1 I don't know how to interpret 46/1 5403/100 and 0/1 ? 46 might be 46° but what about the rest especially 0/1 ? angle/1 5403/100 0/1 What is this structure about ? How to convert them to "standard" ones (like 46°56'48?N 7°26'39?E from wikipedia) ? I would like to pass thoses coordinates to the google maps api to display the pictures positions on a map !

• Sending Illegal XML Characters in Soap Request

  I am trying to send special (&, ' (single quote)) characters in the Soap Request. I am using axis 1.4. The webservice client is in weblogic server and the webservice server is an ibm mainframe (COBOL program). The request data from the client contains special character (& symbol) which is converted to &amp; I tried to enclose it with CDATA as <![CDATA[Some Name & Some Data ]]> which got converted to &lt;![CDATA[Some Name &amp; Some Data]]&gt; The webservice client is generated from wsdl, so I couldn't use CDATA api to construct the request. I am able to set it as string value, and it is getting converted. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information on this.

• Why are getters prefixed with the word "get"?

  Generally speaking, creating a fluid API is something that makes all programmers happy; Both for the creators who write the interface, and the consumers who program against it. Looking beyond conventions, why is it that we prefix all our getters with the word "get". Omitting it usually results in a more fluid, easy to read set of instructions, which ultimately leads to happiness (however small or passive). Consider this very simple example. (pseudo code) Conventional: person = new Person("Joey") person.getName().toLower().print() Alternative: person = new Person("Joey") person.name().toLower().print() Of course this only applies to languages where getters/setters are the norm, but is not directed at any specific language. Were these conventions developed around technical limitations (disambiguation), or simply through the pursuit of a more explicit, intentional feeling type of interface, or perhaps this is just a case of trickle a down norm. What are your thoughts? And how would simple changes to these conventions impact your happiness / daily attitudes towards your craft (however minimal). Thanks.

• NSNumberFormatter crashing iPhone SDK 4.0b2

  Hey there, I've got an app that's been in the app store for a while and functions perfectly on OS 3.1 - 3.13. However, when tested on 4.0b2 I noticed that it crashes in the same place every time, but only on the device, never on the simulator. I'm using a 3GS to test. On loadView I initialize an NSNumberFormatter object which is declared and retained in the interface so I have access to it everywhere. In my method I call it several times to convert string values into nsnumbers to be stored in a mutable dictionary. Here's an example: [myDictionary setObject:[myStyleFormatter numberFromString:@"1"] forKey:@"hours"]; [myDictionary setObject:[myStyleFormatter numberFromString:@"30"] forKey:@"minutes"]; [myDictionary setObject:[myStyleFormatter numberFromString:@"10"] forKey:@"seconds"]; For some reason it crashes as soon as it tries to set hours. The error is "attempt to insert nil value (key: hours)" Have I been doing something wrong all along? Has the api changed for 4.0b2? Thanks, Howie

  The error "error parsing XML: unbound prefix" shows up on my main layout: main.xml when I first open Eclipse. To make the error go away, all I have to do is make a modification to the file, then undo it, then hit save (have to make a change in order to be able to save file and thus trigger the new syntax check). My environment is: Fedora Eclipse Platform Version: 3.4.2 Based on build id: 20090211-1700 My target is Android API level 5. The first time I saw the error I spent a long time trying to track down "the problem" but later realized there isn't really a problem, it's just a phantom error. • Parse error when trying to install app on Asus eee PC 701 running Android 2.0

  A beta tester of mine has a Asus eee pc 701 running Android 2.0 and he is trying to install an app on it from my web site. He is able to download the app but is getting a "Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package" error. I don't really know if this problem is with the eee pc or with the apk since he is the first person to try to install it. I built it for 2.0, the manifest has 5 as the minimum API level and I used Eclipse to export and sign it. But this is my first Android app and he is the first to try to install it, so I am not sure what the problem might be? Could just be the Android implementation too.
