    Using SQL Server 2008, I would like to duplicate one row of a table, without knowing the field names. My key issue: as the table grows and mutates over time, I would like this copy-script to keep working, without me having to write out 30+ ever-changing fields, ugh. Also at issue, of course, is IDENTITY fields cannot be copied. My code below does work, but I wonder if there's a more appropriate method than my thrown-together text string SQL statement? For every subtype in a type there is a corresponding subtype in the next type: (1,1) => (2,2) (1,5) => (2,3) (1,6) => (2,2) (1,8) => (2,3) (2,2) => (3,1) (2,3) => (3,2) In case you haven't seen the pattern, here it is: you sort both current and next types by subtype, then in the next type you get subtype in the same position as your current subtype in current type is. If there are more subtypes in the current type that in the next one, you warp around and start from the first subtype in the next type. Is it possible to construct a query that takes current type and subtype and returns corresponding subtype in the next type?

    I'm looking for the best way to display all rows from two tables while joining first by one field (dwg) then where applicable a 2nd join on part. Table1 data consists of schematics(dwg) along with a list of parts required to build the item depicted in the drawing. Table2 consists of data about the actual parts ordered to build the schematic. Some parts in table2 are a combination of parts in table1 (ex: foo and bar in table1 were ordered as foobar in table2). I can display all rows in both tables with UNION ALL, but this doesn't join on both the dwg and part fields. I looked at FULL OUTER JOIN also, but I haven't figured out how to join first by dwg, then by part.     I have a table essentially: name has_children parent_id row_id values0.....valuesn parent 1 1 1 children 0 1 2 children 0 1 3 parent 0 4 4 parent 1 5 5 children 0 5 6 children 0 5 7 the values for the children can be different than the values for the parent. i want some selects/joins that will filter the table on a value column (i.e. 10) and will return the parent (even if false for the filter) if one of it's children is true for the filter. acceptable return: parent=true all children=false, return just parent parent=false >=1 children=true, return parent and one non-filtered child i'm sure this has been thought about before but i don't have the faintest idea how to phrase the question to find a solution.

I know that it is possible to customize the status bar of each connection in SSMS, but how do you ensure that your developer is connecting to the right server before he runs a query? I need to find what roles a logged on domain user has but all the calls to get the current user return the domain username eg. "MYDOMAIN\username" not the database username eg. "MYDOMAIN\Domain Users". For example, this query returns "MYDOMAIN\username" select original_login(),suser_name(), suser_sname(), system_user, session_user, current_user, user_name() And this query returns 0 select USER_ID() I want the username to query database_role_members is there any fuction that will return it or any other way I can get the current users roles?

  • Linq 2 SQL using base class and WCF

    Hi all. I have the following problem: I'm using L2S for generating entity classes. All these classes share the same property ID which is autonumber. So I figured to put this property to base class and extend all entity classes from the base one. In order to be able to read the value I'm using the override modifier on this property in each and every entity class. Up to now it's live and kicking. Then I decided to introduce another tier - services using WCF approach. I've modified the Serialization mode to Unidirectional (and added the IsReference=true attribute to enable two directions), also added [DataContract] attribute to the BaseObject class. WCF is able to transport the whole object but one property , which is ID. Applying [DataMember] attribute on ID property at the base class resulted in nothing. Am I missing something? Is what I'm trying to achieve possible at all?     Hey Everyone, Here's the situation I'm in: We have a field in our database that contains a 3 digit number, surrounded by some text. This number is actually a PK in another table, and I need to extract this out so I can implement a proper FK relationship. Here's an example of what would currently reside in the column: Some Text Goes Here - (305) Followed By Some More Text So, what I'm looking to do is extract the '305' from the column, and hopefully end up with a result that looks something like this (pseudo code) SELECT <My Extracted Value>, Original Column Text, Id FROM dbo.MyTable It seems to me that using a Regex match in my query is the most effective way to do this. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
