  • Self-hosting vs. Budget hosting - What are the economics?

    My current hosting provider (shared Linux, unlimited domains, < $10 per month, with about 20 sites) has been giving me a lot of grief lately. I am contemplating to just ditch them and repurpose the old Sun V20z that is sitting in my basement rack, and move the hosting in-house, literally. My math goes as follows: my company pays up to $80 a months for my home internet service, which would cover the upgrade from currently Fios to Comcast business internet with 5 static IPs. So this comes free. running the server will cost me about $180/year at the current rate of approx. $.2/kWh my time is free So, it seems that the my net cost of doing this would be about $80 anually, plus the work that goes into setup and maintenance. I will have to get email hosting somewhere, which I do not want to do myself. On the other side of the balance sheet, I'd likely get better uptime than my provider based on recent stats, will not get suspended and don't have to spend hours with customer support. Overall, I am not convinced. Has anybody actually done that? What was your experience, and did it pay off?

    Hi guys, I'm feeling completely stupid because I've spent two hours solving task which should be very simple and which I solved many times before. But now I'm not even sure in which direction to dig. I fail to fetch static content using ajax from local servers (Apache and Mongrel). I get responses 200 and 206 (depending on the server), empty response text (although Content-Length header is always correct), firebug shows request in red. Javascript is very generic, I'm getting same results even here: http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/tryit.asp?filename=tryajax_first (just change document location to 'http://localhost:3000/whatever') So, it's probably not the cause.   • Linked vSphere servers preventing cloning?

    I've currently got a pair of vSphere5 standard servers (physical, not VAs) managing about a hundred ESX 4.1 and 5 hosts in two different physical and logical datacenters. With our last purchase, we bought another vSphere license for the new vS server. I unmanaged all the ESX servers in one datacenter and added them to new vSphere server. Our previous single-vS-server layout used to be: -vSphere1 --Datacenter1 (where the physical ESX host was located) ---Folder ----ESX server1 --Datacenter2 ---Folder ----ESX server2 Now it looks like -vSphere1 --Datacenter1 ---Folder ----ESX server1 -vSphere2 (new vSphere server) --Datacenter2 ---Folder ----ESX server2 ESX server2 was removed from vSphere1's inventory and added to vSphere2's, so it is now managed by vSphere2. This is nice and all, as no vSphere <-- ESX management traffic leaves the physical datacenter, except for one huge oversight: when I go to clone a VM, the opposite vSphere server (and thus other datacenter) does not show up in the list on the first page of the wizard. Is this a bug, a license limitation, or is it just simply not possible to clone a VM from an ESX box managed by one vS server to another ESX box managed by a /different/ vS server?

  • josso newbie setup problems - can't use tomcat's manager page

    I'm trying to setup josso on an apache tomcat server running on windows. I've installed Apache Tomcat/6.0.26 fro zip file to c:\tomcat then installed josso following the documentation at http://www.josso.org/confluence/display/JOSSO1/Quick+Start started tomcat with c:\tomcat\bin\startup.bat, and noticed the following warnings ADVERTENCIA: [SetPropertiesRule]{Server/Service/Engine/Realm} Setting property ' debug' to '1' did not find a matching property. 21/03/2010 15:55:03 org.apache.tomcat.util.digester.SetPropertiesRule begin ADVERTENCIA: [SetPropertiesRule]{Server/Service/Engine/Host/Valve} Setting prope rty 'appName' to 'josso' did not find a matching property. ...   • Bash vs. Gnu screen : Replace Ctrl-A with Ctrl-Shift-A

    I'm a new user to GNU Screen. I've been using Bash for a very long time, and I want to give GNU Screen a try. As you know, GNU Screen uses 'C-a' (Control-A) as as the command character. Trouble is, this interferes with the Line Editing feature in Bash (and GNU Readline), because Control-A in Bash will Move to the start of the line." I know I can set the Command Character to another key sequence, like "^Q" or "``" (Backtick), but I have trouble finding another key sequence which isn't already in use (^Q is used by the terminal, backtick is used when writing shell scripts). It appears that the Command Character may only be one or two characters in length. Can I set the GNU Screen control character to be something like "Control-Shift-A"? (I can't use more then one hyperlink yet, so I cannot link to the Bash documentation)

  • How to tell if Microsoft Works is 32 or 64 bit? Please Help!

    Hi, I am trying to convert one of our apps to run on Win7 64 bit from XP 32 bit. One of the things that it uses is Excel to import files. It's a little complicated since it was using Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 (Excel). I found Office 14 (2010) has a 64bit version I can download. I downloaded Office 2010 Beta but it didn't seem to install Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.14.0. I found that I could download 2010 Office System Driver Beta: Data Connectivity Components which has the ACE.OLEDB.14 in it but when I try to install it, the installed tells me "You cannot install the 64-bit version of Access Database engine for Microsoft Office 2010 because you currently have 32-bit Office products installed". How do I determine what 32bit office products this is reffering to? My Dell came with Microsoft Works installed. I don't know if this is 32 or 64 bit. Is there anyway to tell? I don't want to uninstall this if it's not the problem and I'm not sure what else might be the problem. Any help would be appreciated! thanks, Bill

  • Drobo FS vs. MacBook Pro: Finder works, Drobo Dashboard doesn't

    Does anyone have any experience with the new Drobo FS, specifically using it from a MacBook Pro? My experience thus far is this: Set up the Drobo Dashboard software (hereinafter called simply 'Dashboard') on my WinXP machine, which is hard-wired to the network to do the data migration from my NAS-that's-being-replaced (a 250G SimpleShare which works well enough but I was always afraid of losing the one disk). The Dashboard seems to work ok, except that the DroboCopy function doesn't work at all. This is the backup solution, which I can configure, and if I launch it (e.g. to back up from the old NAS to the Drobo) it spins the NAS, seeking the drive all over hell and creation, until finally giving up an hour+ later with zero files copied. Selecting only a subset of the data yields the same effect albeit more quickly. On my Mac I installed the Dashboard software too, since most of my fiddling with the device will be from my couch in the living room. Finder connects to the box just fine, fwiw, but Dashboard just sits there, "waiting for connection." This is considerably more bothersome than the above paragraph, but I figured I'd give whatever information I have. Drobo is insisting that I send them this "Debug Log" file that their software generates. Does anyone know what's in it? It's encrypted and they won't tell me, which spooks me just a bit; not like I'm terribly concerned about privacy but I don't want to be sending personal information out to every clown who says they "need" it in order to help me. thanks a ton, -tom!

  • mysql 5.0.23 vs 5.5 performance benefits and upgrade issues ?

    I have been told that mysql 5.5 has a significant performanance boost compared to 5.0 Our server handles alot of data (around 30 million records processed per 5-10 seconds) and requires every drop of performance boost we can give. Will it be beneficial if we upgrade from 5.0.23 to mysql 5.5 ? Also, we have lots of database indexes setup on the tables and i've been told that sometimes the indexes become corrupt after a version upgrade and they have to be rebuilt. Is this true ?

    Hey all i am in need of some helpful tips/advice on how to go about my problem. I have a database that houses a "signup" table. The date for this table is formated as such: 2010-04-03 00:00:00 Now suppose i have 10 records in this database: 2010-04-03 00:00:00 2010-01-01 00:00:00 2010-06-22 00:00:00 2010-02-08 00:00:00 2010-02-05 00:00:00 2010-03-08 00:00:00 2010-09-29 00:00:00 2010-11-16 00:00:00 2010-04-09 00:00:00 2010-05-21 00:00:00 And i wanted to get each months total registers... so following the example above: Jan = 1 Feb = 2 Mar = 1 Apr = 2 May = 1 Jun = 1 Jul = 0 Aug = 0 Sep = 1 Oct = 0 Nov = 1 Dec = 0 Now how can i use a query to do that but not have to use a query like: WHERE left(date, 7) = '2010-01' and keep doing that 12 times? I would like it to be a single query call and just have it place the months visits into a array like so: do until EOF theMonthArray[0] = "total for jan" theMonthArray[1] = "total for feb" theMonthArray[2] = "total for mar" theMonthArray[3] = "total for apr" ...etc loop I just can not think of a way to do that other than the example i posted with the 12 query called-one for each month. This is my query as of right now. Again, this only populates for one month where i am trying to populate all 12 months all at once. SELECT count(idNumber) as numVisits, theAccount, signUpDate, theActive from userinfo WHERE theActive = 'YES' AND idNumber = '0203' AND theAccount = 'SUB' AND left(signUpDate, 7) = '2010-04' GROUP BY idNumber ORDER BY numVisits; The example query above outputs this: numVisits | theAccount | signUpDate | theActive 2 SUB 2010-04-16 00:00:00 YES Which is correct because i have 2 records within the month of April. But again, i am trying to do all 12 months at one time (in a single query) so i do not tax the database server as much when compared to doing 12 different query's... The sams is provided with a build.xml file and it should generate some code using Apache CXF when building it.     What is the difference between adding MIME types in these 2 different situations? When in IIS 6 manager... Right click on the computer name (local computer) properties mime types Right click on the "Web sites" folder properties http headers mime types I'm guessing that perhaps option 1 adds MIME types for FTP also? However if that were true i'd expect to be able to add MIME types specifically in the properties of FTP (and not just websites). thanks for your help.

  • Intel Core i7-4960HQ vs. 4850HQ (Haswell) [on hold]

    I'm looking at the new MacBook Pros and trying to decide between the Core i7-4960HQ (2.6 GHz) and i7-4850 (2.3 GHz). I've found some synthetic benchmarks comparing them, but I haven't found a lot of data, so I'd appreciate any pointers to good comparisons for the Haswell family (especially these two processors). My cursory analysis seems to suggest there isn't a huge gain from the extra 300 MHz. I'd like to determine not only whether this is generally true, but also to figure out if the gains that are made in performance come at too high of cost. Is the 2.6 going to be pushing the limits of what can fit in a thin laptop without overheating? I've looked at some of Intel's documentation, but have not been able to determine what the normal and maximum operating temperature differences are for the models. In the past, there have been times that Intel's fastest models in a given range ran especially hot and/or consumed significantly more power compared to slightly slower models. Do those concerns factor into the current generation?

  • Security risk of JIRA standalone installation running JRE version 1.6.0_26 vs 1.6.0_29 (latest)

    Atlassian recently introduced a standalone installer that installs JIRA, along with its own JRE. Unfortunately the JRE Atlassian bundles with this installer is 1.6.0_26, whereas the current version of the JRE is 1.6.0_29. This is potentially concerning given there were vulnerabilities in _26 that were fixed in the subsequent versions. We are currently using the bundled-installer version of JIRA and one contractor has recommended we ditch this for the system-installed JRE. My question is this: what is the actual security risk of continuing to use the _26 version of the JRE included in the bundled installer? There is no public access to our install of JIRA (only about 20 employees and contractors can login to our JIRA) and it's only accessible on a subdomain of a domain at which there's no publicly-available website. If there's a not insignificant risk inherent in sticking with the older JRE, why hasn't Atlassian upgraded the default JRE?
