  • Multiple ports listed in SQL Server connection string

    I have a legacy VB6 app where the servername, databasename, username, etc are defined in an INI file, but the port number for the connection string (the default 1433) is hard coded in the app. It's being moved to a new sql server back end that runs off a different port number. I'm trying to avoid having to alter and recompile the application which entails signifigant retesting, documentation, etc. I tried altering the INI file so that for the new server I have put in: SERVERNAME\INSTANCE,NEWPORTNUMBER This effectively builds the connection with Data Source = SERVERNAME\INSTANCE,NEWPORTNUMBER,1433; This appears to work correctly as it connects to the database when I run the app. It appears to me that the ,1433 portion is being ignored. Is this a valid assumption or will this cause me some problem I'm not seeing here?

  • Manually force touch points to reset in Windows 8?

    Hi I developed a HTML5/JAVASCRIPT app that is supported using advertisement for the Win8 store. I just by chance happened to notice that if you touch the screen, drag your finger over the advertisement, and release your finger on top of the advertisement that the specific touch is not released and instead when you touch again it registers as a separate touch. This has caused my app to behave expectantly when the user interacts with the app using touch. I wanted to know if it was possible to force the touches to reset so that when the user touches the screen again it is always using "Touch(0)".

  • Halting Django's dev server via page request?

    I'm looking at writing a portable, light-weight Python app. As the "GUI toolkit" I'm most familiar with — by a wide margin! — is HTML/CSS/JS, I thought to use Django as a framework for the project, using its built-in "development server" (manage.py runserver). I've been banging on a proof-of-concept for a couple hours and the only real problem I've encountered so far is shutting down the server once the user has finished using the app. Ideally, I'd like there to be a link on the app's pages which shuts down the server and closes the page, but nothing I see in the Django docs suggests this is possible. Can this be done? For that matter, is this a reasonable approach for writing a small, portable GUI tool?

  • Public static variables and Android activity life cycle management

    According to the documentation the Android OS can kill the activity at the rear of the backstack. So, say for example I have an app and open the Main Activity (let's call it Activity A). In this public activity class I declare and initialize a public static variable (let's call it "foo"). In Activity A's onCreate() method I then change the value of "foo." From Activity A the user starts another activity within my app called Activity B. Variable "foo" is used in Activity B. Activity B is then paused after the user navigates to some other activities in other apps. Eventually, after a memory shortage occurs, Activity A then Activity B can be killed. After the user navigates back to my app it restarts (actually "recreates") activity B. What happens: 1) Will variable "foo" at this point have the value that was set to it when Activity A's onCreate() method ran? 2) Variable "foo" does not exist? 3) Variable "foo" exists and but is now the initialized value and not the value set in Activity A's onCreate() method?

    Is it possible to have whole or part of PATH environment variable specific to the type of running process's image (32bit/64bit)? When I run some app from within 64bit cmd.exe I would like to have it pick the 64bit version of OpenSSL library whereas when I run some app from within 32bit cmd.exe I would like to have it pick the 32bit version of OpenSSL library. FOLLOW UP where.exe does not find OpenSSL libs when %ProgramFiles% variable is used in the PATH environment variable

Static is a sub-application using a not managed application pool. On Website bindings I've set local.domain.com to have access through port 80. I want to access the Static app using static.domain.com, but I don't find the option to configure the binding. How is it possible to configure like that?

  • How do I connect two apps

    I am considering building an app in C++ that will be parsing text from the web and create some statistical results. These results I want to be fed in an external app in real time. The external app (to whose code I have no access, but can ask for a - paid - custom made addition) will then need some code to read and use these results. I am wondering what would be the best way to interconnect the two apps, in terms of speed and ease of implementation. After that I saw that when I click on the Internet Explorer shortcut on the Start screen it opened me IE10 in the Desktop.     Hi, I have a question to exclusive compute mode with NVidia+OpenCL. I can set up exclusive compute mode (page 74 from cuda programming guide 3.0) with nvidia-smi on a nvidia-gpu . that means, only one program can compute on gpu. cuda runtime schedules than app automatically. but I have a problem with opencl-programs in this case: if one application runs on a gpu with setted exclusive compute mode and second opencl-program calls clGetDeviceInfo(..., CL_DEVICE_AVAILABLE, ...) with the same GPU is the result == CL_TRUE. After that if opencl-app tries to create a context on this device, than crashes the running app (both). How can i find out an available GPU with OpenCL? Thanks.

  • How to set the value of a wx.combobox by posting an event

    The code below demonstrates the problem I am running into. I am creating a wx.ComboBox and trying to mimic it's functionality for testing purposes by posting a wxEVT_COMMAND_COMBOBOX_SELECTED event... this event strangely works fine for wx.Choice, but it doesn't do anything to the ComboBox. There doesn't appear to be a different event that I can post to the combobox, but maybe I'm missing something.     Under the current Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements (pdf) applications running under lock must "stop any ... active timers" (section 6.3.1). However looking out on Marketplace there are a number of timer/stopwatch apps claiming to run under lock and also allow lock to be disabled in their settings. How are these apps certified or is there some loosening on the restrictions by Microsoft if the app allows the user to make that decision? Also some of these apps also suggest they continue even when the app is exited or when the device off. Is it the case that they are not truly running under these circumstances, i.e. the timers either start where they left off when reactivated, or perhaps use the OS time to work out the time elapsed between tombstoning and reactivation? In these circumstance I also presume it is not possible for the app to notify the user when the timer completes?

  • Is there a way to bring an application's GUI to the current desktop?

    Background: Started a fair amount of work before realizing that a Windows Service cannot start an app with a GUI that displays without potential problems. The proper solution of separating the GUI of the app to be started is non-trivial, so I'm trying to think of alternative solutions. There is a GUI to manage the service that is a separate executable, but the process to be launched (actually multiple instances of it) has its own GUI that needs to be shown. It doesn't need to be made visible by the service itself, but it needs to be at least able to be made visible by another process with a visible GUI. The Windows User that is running the service and that needs to see the GUI of the launched process is the same and known at install time. Is there some way to accomplish this or is it back to the drawing board? Also both the service and the app to launch are both our code and modifiable.

    Hi, Experts: Can you please give some suggestions on sqlite using at xcode? Within my application, I use a sqlite DB to store all local data. Two methods can be used to retrieve those data during running time. 1, Load all the data into memory at initialization stage. (More memory used, less DB open/close operation needed) 2, Read corresponding records when necessary, free the occupied memory after using. (Good habit for memory using, but much DB open/close operations needs). I prefer to use method 2, but not sure whether too many DB opening/closing operations could affect app's efficiency. Or do you think I can 'upgrade' method 2 by opening DB when app launches and closing DB when app quits? Thanks for your suggestions very much!

    I have activities A and B. The A is the one with LAUNCHER intent-filter (i.e. the activity that is started when we click the app icon on home screen). A launches B using startActivity(new Intent(A.this, B.class)). When the user has the B activity open, and then put my application into the background, and later my application's process is killed, when the user starts my application again, B is opened instead of A. This caused a force close in my app, because A is the activity that initializes the resources my app needs, and when B tried to access the uninitialized resources, B crashes. Do you have any suggestions what should I do in this situation?

  • Is there an easy way to replace a deprecated method call in Xcode?

    So iOS 6 deprecates presentModalViewController:animated: and dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:, and it replaces them with presentViewController:animated:completion: and dismissViewControllerAnimated:completion:, respectively. I suppose I could use find-replace to update my app, although it would be awkward with the present* methods, since the controller to be presented is different every time. I know I could handle that situation with a regex, but I don't feel comfortable enough with regex to try using it with my 1000+-files-big app. So I'm wondering: Does Xcode have some magic "update deprecated methods" command or something? I mean, I've described my particular situation above, but in general, deprecations come around with every OS release. Is there a better way to update an app than simply to use find-replace?

I don't want to get people to download a new version and install it manually as it can be a real pain for some people, also it's bad if there is an important bug that needs fixing and people don't update.
