• RAID1: can't replace faulty spare (marked again as 'faulty spare' within seconds)

  I got a problem that I cannot solve: Our fileserver runs XUbuntu and 3 RAID1s. One has a problem since monday: it consists of sdb and sdc. sdb was marked as faulty by mdadm for unknown reasons. I used --remove to remove it from the RAID and then to add it by --add. All was fine, re-syncing started but never got above 0% and after a few seconds, sdb was again marked as 'faulty spare' (and therefore the RAID degraded, but clean). So I saved the first 512 byte of the old sdb to a file, bought a new HDD of same size (4TB), shut down the computer and replaced sdb physically, switched the computer back on and wrote the 512 byte back to the new drive to have the same partition info as the old drive (both are the same type, from same company). But the new drive shows the same behaviour as the old: I can add, re-syncing starts and after a few seconds its marked as 'faulty spare'. I do all commands as root and the system holds 3 more 4TB drives, ie the mainboard can handle them. The old harddrive was checked for errors using badblocks, but all is fine. Does anybody have any idea, what the problem is?

• Windows: starting sqlplus in new window from cygwin bash

  When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. Using cmd.exe or cygstart.For example, to start default sqlplus.exe to connect to default local instance. $ cmd /c "start sqlplus sys/oracle as sysdba" 2nd example. To start sqlplus in 2nd Oracle home and to connect to non-default local instance. $ ORACLE_SID=orcl cygstart /cygdrive/g/app/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/BIN/sqlplus scott I hope this tip helps reducing your DBA time.

• How to support tableless columns with WYSIWYG editor?

  On the front page of a site I'm working on there's a small slideshow. It's not for pictures in particular, any content can go in, and I'm currently setting up the editing interface for the client. I'd like to be able to have one/two/more columns in the editable area, and ideally that would be via CSS - does anyone know of a WYSIWYG editor that supports this? I'm using Drupal (would prefer not to involve Panels as it would require a bit of work to make it a streamlined workflow for content entry) in case that matters to anyone. To start the ball rolling, one way would be to use templates. I know CKEditor supports templates, and it looks like TinyMCE might have something similar. I don't know how well these work with tableless columns (the CKEditor homepage demo uses tables to achieve its two column effect). Holding out for a cool solution!

  I have a php template which has one index.php and all the different pages (content1.html, content2.html etc) are shown on the index.phppage. So for example I can open www.example.com/index.php?content1 and it will show the content1.html. Now what I would like is this: Often you see websites where the url is like: www.example.com/this-is-the-content I know how to do this with an exclamation mark like www.example.com/?content1 <-- here you just dont write the index.php. But how can I do an url name, which is completely different from the filename? For example www.example.com/this-is-some-page would show me the content of index.php?content1

• Macbook Pro late 2011 screen brightness issue

  The keys to set the screen brightness work properly but everytime I reboot, the screen brightness is reverted to 100%, which is very annoying. • Sharing a mounted Truecrypt volume via Samba

  Been banging my head against the wall on this one for a while. I have an encrypted (via truecrypt) partition on a drive. In windows, I mount it locally and share it on my local network. I'm trying to do the same in Ubuntu 10.10 but am running into permission issues. The tc volume has funny permissions and I just can't seem to figure out a way to access it (unsecurely of course) over my network. Other non-tc volume shares work just fine. To recap, I mount a truecrypt volume in Ubuntu and set up a samba share as normal. The share shows up on my local network but accessing it gives 'permission denied'. Mounting as a network drive using a password does not seem to work either. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Custom HTML Tags: Are there any specifications stating a standard way to handle them?

  It seems like for years they've just been given default styling and inline display. Is there a spec somewhere that has dictated this? I've looked over the RFC's but I'm not particularly good with RFC-ese, and I didn't notice anything anywhere. For example <body> Some content <mycustomtag>something else</mycustomtag> more content. </body> I can still style it with CSS, and the browser doesn't outright vomit... so it seems like there is some sort of expected behavior. Was that dictated by a specification?

• Evolution laggy due to IMAP -profile or due to some odd Sync -issue?

  I'm fighting with Evolution. Basically it's working fine -- but it is very slow to react in certain situations. Helper questions Could it be that changing away from Bonobo has to do with slowing-down? There might be some trouble with the new engine and "asynchronous actions". What to do about it? Are there e.g. any configuration files? I want to get the previous "working mood" back. How can I speed this thing up? Different scenarios when sending a mail, the composer window hangs there inactive for a couple of seconds, everything grayed out. Though there is a green check mark saying it's sent, I'm not sure a) why it's still blocking everything and b) whether I could simply close it without "breaking"/"losing" anything. In earlier versions, the composer window was closing pretty fast, and one could see the message being stored into the local "outbox" until it was sent, and one could immediately continue with the next task. I prefer that behaviour over the current, where I cannot do anything in the application until the window closes. switching between modules. Coming from mail and switching to the address book takes a couple of seconds. Same for switching to the calendar. I read about different "possible causes" and tried a few things: I only have 3 local address books, so no networking should be involved here. To make sure, I switched to offline mode and then tried to access the address book. No noticeable difference. I use 3 Google Calendars. Switching to offline mode made a minor difference, but so minor that it also could be "imagination" since one might have expected this in this case according to some reports, disabling the tasks should help. Well, it didn't in my case, as I don't use them regularly (just two local items stored here) Maybe I should also mention that I'm using the KDE4 desktop (so no Unity or Gnome, though both is installed on the computer). And I did not have this issue before I updated to 12.04.

• Flash site loads slowly

  I have a simple html page that embeds an swf, that downloads other xml, swf and image files. The total count of the requests reaches about 90. I am aware that it should take a while until the content is available and I am OK with that. All the needed files are hosted by two different providers in the US: flashxml.net/monochrome-demo.html and u1.flashcomponents.net/samples/8751/index.html From two different countries in Europe, the content shows up a lot later (almost twice as later) from flashxml, than flashcomponents. I've done mtr tests and the ping difference is about 40ms and the flashxml server load is below 1. Do you have any other suggestions as to what should I look at?

• Some Early Considerations

  Following on from my previous post, I want to say "thank you" to everyone who has got in touch and got involved – you are pioneers! An update on where we are right now: paper prototypes v1 To be more specific, we’ve picked two of the ideas that seem to have more pros than cons, turned them into Balsamiq mockups, and are getting them fleshed out with realistic content. We’ll initially make these available to the aforementioned pioneers (thank you again), roll in the feedback, and then open up to get more data on what works and what doesn’t. If you’ve got any questions about this (or what we’re working on right now), feel free to ask me in the comments below. I’ve had a few people express an interest in the process we’re going through, and I’m more than happy to share details more frequently as we go along – not least because you, dear reader, will help us stay on target and create something Good. To start with, here’s a quick flashback to bring you all up to speed. A Brief Retrospective As you may already know, we’re creating a new publishing asset specifically focused on providing great content for web developers. We don’t yet know exactly what this thing will look like, or exactly how it will work, but we know we want to create something that is useful different. For my part, I’m seriously excited at the prospect of building a genuinely digital publishing system (as opposed to what most publishing is these days, which is print-style publishing which just happens to be on the web). The main challenge at this point is working out our build-measure-assess loop to speed up our experimental turn-around, and that’ll get better as we run more trials. Of course, there are a few things we’ve been pondering at this early conceptual stage: Do we publishing about heterogeneous technology stacks from day 1, or do we start with ASP.NET (which we’re familiar with) & branch out later? There are challenges with either approach. What publishing "modes" are already being well-handled? For example, the likes of Pluralsight, TekPub, and Treehouse have pretty much nailed video training (debate about price, if you like), and unless we think we can do it faster / better / cheaper (unlikely, for the record), we should leave them to it. Where should we base whatever we create? Should we create a completely new asset under a new name, graft something onto Simple-Talk (like the labs), or just build something directly into Simple-Talk? It sounds trivial, but it does have at least some impact on infrastructure and what how we manage the different types of content we (will) have. Are there any obvious problems or niches that we think could address really well, or should we just throw ideas out and see what readers respond to? What kind of users do we want to provide for? This actually deserves a little bit of unpacking… Why are you here? We currently divide readers into (broadly) the categories: Category 1: I know nothing about X, and I’d like to learn about it. Category 2: I know something about X, but I’d like to learn how to do something specific with it. Category 3: Ah man, I have a problem with X, and I need to fix it now. Now that I think about it, I might also include a 4th class of reader: Category 4: I’m looking for something interesting to engage my brain. These are clearly task-based categorizations, and depending on which task you’re performing when you arrive here, you’re going to need different types of content, or will have specific discovery needs. One of the questions that’s at the back of my mind whenever I consider a new idea is “How many of the categories will this satisfy?” As an example, typical video training is very well suited to categories 1, 2, and 4. StackOverflow is very well suited to category 3, and serves as a sign-posting system to the rest. Clearly it’s not necessary to satisfy every category need to be useful and popular, but being aware of what behavior readers might be exhibiting when they arrive will help us tune our ideas appropriately. < / Flashback > We don’t have clean answers to most of these considerations – they’re things we’re aware of, and each idea we look at is going to be best suited to a different mix of the options I’ve described. Our first experimental loop will be coming full circle in the next few days, so we should start to see how the different possibilities vary between ideas. Free to chime in with questions and suggestions about anything I’ve just brain-dumped, or at any stage as we go along. If you see anything that intrigued or enrages you, or just have an idea you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you.

  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

• Why isn't .profile sourced on login to LXDE?

  I switched recently from GNOME to LXDE and since then my .profile file hasn't been sourced on login. I found out that my PATH variable doesn't include ~/bin anymore. However, my .profile file includes PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" while PATH's content is /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games. Is it intended that LXDE doesn't read this file on login? If yes, what file should I use to add the bin folder to the PATH variable? If not, to what package should I report a bug?

• Print Problem: Page Squeezed in Half

  I've just managed to successfully set up my printer (Canon MX320) using the Printing app on Ubuntu 12.04. However the only 1 remaining problem is that each time I tried to print it will only print the file on the top half of the page only: meaning that for some reason, the printer "squeezes" the whole content of each page in the file to fit into the top half of the page only (so the proportion in the print-out is not correct vertically). This happens with every type of file I tried to print (Documents, Images, Web pages). I checked the Printing's setting & properties and couldn't find anything related to this issue yet and I've already made sure to set all the information correct (paper size, source etc.). The Print Preview always display correctly on the screen, but it's only the actual print-out that shows this problem. I also tried with several different types of papers (A4, photos etc.) but the result is always the same: the printer keeps putting the content in the top half of the paper only.

• It is worth planning before jumping in the code?

  I always thought that planning is important for a game. But i don't know at which point. Some are telling me to code instead of planning but i feel like its still important because when you will be in the code you will know what to do next more easily. I am currently working on a game that will have lots of content so i decided to start a design document introducing thoses content and at a side-level i am doing proofs of concept to check if it can be done. Parts of each proofs of concept then could be used later in the real game. EDIT: I am working alone on this project. So my question is : It is worth planning before jumping in the code ? Im still interested to know what others have to say about this. Cause i still get some poeple saying i should code instead of thinking.. so what your opinion on this ?

• What options do I have for a Wedding Car website? [on hold]

  I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. Things I am considering, but would like advice on: A Mobile version of the website A Blog on the website A gallery page with pictures and descriptions Asking local companies to link to my website Essentially I have a small business website but not much content, because really there isnt!
