• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24. • Getting Started with Component Architecture: DI?

  I just moved away from MVC towards something more component-architecture-like. I have no concept of messages yet (it's rough prototype code), objects just get internal properties and values of other classes for now. That issue aside, it seems like this is turning into an aspect-oriented-programming challenge. I've noticed that all entities with, for example, a position component will have similar properties (get/set X/Y/Z, rotation, velocity). Is it a common practice, and/or good idea, to push these behind an interface and use dependency injection to inject a generic class (eg. PositionComponent) which already has all the boiler-plate code? (I'm sure the answer will affect the model I use for message/passing)

• How can I learn to write idiomatic C++?

  I am a computer science student, and as a result, I was taught C++ as a better version of C with classes. I end up trying to reinvent the wheel whenever a solution to a complex problem is needed, only to find sometime after that, some language feature or some standard library routine could potentially have done that for me. I'm all comfortable with my char* and *(int*)(someVoidPointer) idioms, but recently, after making a (minor) contribution to an open-source project, I feel that is not how one's supposed to think when writing C++ code. It's much different than C is. Considering that I know objected-oriented programming fairly well, and I am okay with a steep learning curve, what would you suggest for me to get my mind on the C++ track when I'm coding C++?

  My blog has been quiet for quite a while. My inspiration comes from crunching/exchanging information which I should do more often. Gartner analysis tells us that by 2013 mobile phones will overtake PC’s as the most common Web access device worldwide. A few years back I would have said non sense, but apparently most Web users are comfortable with less processing power. Just take a look at the increasing business in Netbooks. Wouldn’t it be great to have a mobile phone which can connect wirelessly to my home TV, monitor, car display, mouse, keyboard, etc? And to have the processing power of the current Netbook generation? Where can I buy it? Why are we making our PC devices (for instance the slate) smaller while we can make our mobile device’s functionality bigger? What about the single responsibility principle? Does it apply to physical devices as well as good object-oriented software?

  Next week I am getting my first job as a programmer in a well known company. I have worked in other companies before, but mostly in IT department. As you can understand, I am very determined to succeed in there. I have found some related articles in the Web, but I am not even sure they are written from developers. So I am asking you, to tell us about what will you do in another way if you could "reverse" the time, and what can I do to succeed. Of course "work hard" is one of them but what about book/article reading, certifications, good practises to make good impression to my team leader or whatever else you think would help? • Business Analyst vs. Architect [closed]

  I'm a developer of a few years in the financial industry and will soon need to decide what career path to try and row towards. Broadly speaking I have two options: something more 'people' oriented like BAs, or keep coding and try to make more technical decisions like the Architects do where I currently work. Here are my perceptions right now: Business Analysts: get paid way more than devs once they do their job, it seems like they usually have no worries more likely to go REALLY high up in the organization (VPs, etc) Architects: things like certification matters (I see this as a con) called in when things go wrong more than anyone else (weekends & overtime) long career path to get to (dev - senior dev - team lead - architect) I would find the latter more intellectually rewarding, but when I look at it I just can't justify it in terms of lifestyle. Am I wrong / what am I missing? Can you really make a lot of money in a technical role or must you really get out of coding? Thank you for any constructive input.

  Internally we work with metric units and use decimal fractions for sub units, e.g. 1cm or 0.35cm or 23mm) We're building a user oriented design tool for laying out reports and was wondering what the most most common approach taken by UI developers who are still working in Imperial measurements (Inches etc.) when it comes to decimalised fractions. Most of my cultural references point to people using 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/32 inch when measuring fractions. But when faced with decimal equivalent what do people tend to do? For example do people use 0.5, 0.25, 0.125 etc or do you people roll these up to say 0.5, 03, and 0.1 inch? Sorry for the confusing question.

• Is testable code actually more stable? [closed]

  A google scholar search turns up numerous papers on testability, including models for computing testability, recommendations for how ones code can be more testable, etc. They all come with the assertion that more testable code is more stable, however I can't find any studies which actually demonstrate this. I tried looking for studies evaluating the effect of testable code vs. quality, however the closest I can find is Improving the Testability of Object Oriented Systems, which discusses the relationship between design flaws and testability. Is testable code is actually more stable? And why, or why not? Please back up your answers with references or evidence to back up your claim.

• Should Business Interfaces be part of the Model layer?

  In an oriented-services enterprise application, isn't it an antipattern to mix Service APIs (containing interface that external users depends on) with Model objects (entities, custom exceptions objects etc...) ? According to me, Services should only depends on Model layer but never mixed with it. In fact, my colleague told me that it doesn't make sense to separate it since client need both. (model and service interfaces) But I notice that everytime a client asks for some changes, like adding a new method in some interface (means a new service), Model layer has to be also delivered... Thus, client who has not interested by this "addition" is constrained to be concerned by this update of Model... and in a large enterprise application, this kind of delivery is known to be very risked... What is the best practice ? Separate services(only interfaces so) and model objects or mix it ?

  I've received my B.S. in Software Engineering in August 2010 and I've been looking for a job since. I've gotten two interviews since that went up to the technical phone interview and then they were no longer interested. One of the recruiters mentioned to me that they thought my fundamentals weren't strong enough. What do I need to brush up on in order to get past the technical phone interview. My language of most experience is C#. I know Object Oriented Programming. I know what the difference between an interface and an abstract class is. I've applied to positions from game programming to WPF/Silverlight. I have a portfolio website www.samarmstrong.me. It also has my resume on there. I never had real internship. Am I unhireable?

• Business Layer Design in J2EE Project

  Currently the project on which I am working is being developed with Spring, Hibernate and struts. The business layer consists of simple java beans with no behavior in them only properties and getter and setter methods, the services are written on them which operates on them and call DAO layer methods and all. My questions is that is it object oriented way of designing or simply the procedure way in which the data and the functions on which they operate are not together. Please provide your thoughts and inputs on how the business logic is design and implemented in j2ee application, is the domain model contains business methods or are they simply dumb objects which have only data and services written on to them.

I'm assuming for simplicity that there is no need to use .NET objects or other kinds of objects. There are two possible ways of implementing an object-oriented kind of solution: the first is to use type classes and the second to use records which have fields of functional type, to implement methods. I imagine you'd use classes when you want to use inheritance but that otherwise records would be adequate, if perhaps clumsier to express. Or do you find classes more convenient than records in any case?

  While I agree that catching ... without rethrowing is indeed wrong, I however believe that using constructs like this: try { // Stuff } catch (...) { // Some cleanup throw; } Is acceptable in cases where RAII is not applicable. (Please, don't ask... not everybody in my company likes object-oriented programming and RAII is often seen as "useless school stuff"...) My coworkers says that you should always know what exceptions are to be thrown and that you can always use constructs like: try { // Stuff } catch (exception_type1&) { // Some cleanup throw; } catch (exception_type2&) { // Some cleanup throw; } catch (exception_type3&) { // Some cleanup throw; } Is there a well admited good practice regarding these situations?

• Using PDO for Data Management

  This question is more a design oriented question than a code specific question. I am new to PHP and I am planning to use PDO as a data access layer. Say for instance I have a class called CITY. Now if I need to create an instance of this class, what is the best technique. Should have a singleton DB access class which is used to write and read data from the db layer. OR should I delegate it to the individual class object. For example if I invoke city.save() (city is a class), then the city class will handle the saving of that city object's data into the database. Excuse my ignorance but i have a java background and therefore trying to understand what is the best design principle for data management when using php.

All the useful trace lines that I care about get hidden amongst all the useless RuntimeBinderExceptions Is there any way I can turn this off, or is the RuntimeBinder unfortunately just built like that? • Displaying wait cursor in while backgroundworker is running

  During the start of my windows application, I have to make a call to a web service to retrieve some default data to load onto my application. During the load of the form, I run a backgroundworker to retrieve this data. I want to display the wait cursor until this data is retrieved. How would I do this? I've tried setting the wait cursor before calling the backgroundworker to run. When I report a progress of 100 then I set it back to the default cursor. The wait cursor comes up but when I move the mouse it disappears. Environment: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit VS2010 C# .NET 4.0 Windows Forms EDIT: I am setting the cursor the way Jay Riggs suggested. It only works if I don't move the mouse. **UPDATE: I have created a button click which does the following: When I do the button click and move my mouse, the wait cursor appears regardless if I move my mouse or not. void BtnClick() { Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor; Thread.Sleep(8000); Cursor = Cursors.Default; } If I do the following: I see the wait cursor and when I move the mouse it disappears inside the form. • C# Ordered dictionary index

  I am considering of using the OrderedDictionary. As a key I want to use a long value (id) and the value will be a custom object. I use the OrderedDictionary because I want to get an object by it's Id and I want to get an object by it's 'collection' index. I want to use the OrderedDictionary like this: public void AddObject(MyObject obj) { _dict.Add(obj.Id, obj); // dict is declared as OrderedDictionary _dict = new OrderedDictionary(); } Somewhere else in my code I have something similar like this: public MyObject GetNextObject() { /* In my code keep track of the current index */ _currentIndex++; // check _currentindex doesn't exceed the _questions bounds return _dict[_currentIndex] as MyObject; } Now my question is. In the last method I've used an index. Imagine _currentIndex is set to 10, but I have also an object with an id of 10. I've set the Id as a key. The Id of MyObject is of type long?. Does this goes wrong?

  Hi, This was working in MVC 1, but has broken in MVC 2. I'm mocking the HttpContext so I can test routes. The code was originally taken from Steven Sanderson's book. I've tried mocking some extra properties as suggested in this comment but it hasn't fixed it. What am I missing?
