• Page load speeds effect on crawl rate

  We've noticed a big drop in the total pages crawled per day on our site, we have no control over the crawl rate in google webmaster tools so it's possible this has been changed by google. However it's a fairly large site and I wouldn't of thought that the crawl rate would've been decreased. What we have noticed though is a sizeable increase in page load times, in my mind this would be the cause. Can anyone else confirm if the crawl rate is directly correlated to page load time? Seems logical, longer page load time, less pages crawled. Any decent documentation on this would be appreciated, I don't normally have any input on SEO so this is new to me.

• NGINX Configuration Error using Codex Example: Is This a Typo in Codex?

  I installed NGINX using this tutorial: C3M Digital NGINX Tuturial but after reading this article on security issues with "cut and paste" configuration tutorials: Neal Poole's article regarding security and NGINX configuration I decided to follow Poole's suggestion to use the configuration suggested in the WordPress codex: Codex on NGINX Configuration I used the Codex configuration for a multisite installation using W3 Total Cache. When attempting to start NGINX I get an error saying that the /etc/nginx/nginx.conf test failed. The error message was: "Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "//" in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/teambrazil.com:18" When I looked at my site specific configuration at that path I noticed the rewrite rule in the server block was: rewrite ^ $scheme://teambrazil.conf$request_uri redirect; That line in the Codex example was: rewrite ^ $scheme://mysite.conf$request_uri redirect; That looked like a mistake to me, and I changed my line to: rewrite ^ $scheme://teambrazil.com$request_uri redirect; I then attempted to restart NGINX but got the same error message. My question is: is that a mistake, and is there anything more I have to do aside from restarting NGINX after making this change. As suggested by both tutorials I set up the directories: /etc/nginx/sites-enabled and /etc/nginx/sites-available and created the appropriate symbolic links using: touch /etc/nginx/sites-available/teambrazil.com ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/teambrazil.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/teambrazil.com Is there something else I need to consider after making this correction? Or was it not an error in the first place? I'm pretty stuck here. BTW, I am using Debian squeeze as an OS on Amerinoc's VPS. I'm just getting familiar with VPS administration and am pretty much a noob. Thanks very much, would appreciate any input.

• Is scanning the ports considered harmful?

  If any application is scanning the ports of other machines, to find out whether any particular service/application is running, will it be considered harmful? Is this treated as hacking? How else can one find out on which port the desired application is running (without the user input)? Let's say I only know the port range in which the other application could be running, but not the exact port. In this case, my application ping each of the port in range to check whether the other application is listening on it, using already defined protocol. Is this a normal design? Or is this considered harmful for the security?

• How can I assign actions to all my mouse buttons?

  I have a mouse with lots of buttons, but it's not a mainstream make like Logitech. For Windows, I have a driver that lets me assign actions like close-window (Ctrl+W) or next-tab (Ctrl+Tab), but I don't have a Linux driver. Since Linux is so flexible, I thought perhaps there is a general way to do this, regardless of brand? Update: Based on input from Cyrex, I installed and ran sudo apt-get install btnx which found several but not all mouse buttons. Found: left, right, wheel, wheelclick, thumb fwd, thumb back. Not found: wheel left, wheel right, thumb middle button. Vendor ID is 0x04d9, Model ID is 0xa015.

• Acer Aspire installation of Ubuntu as the one and only OS

  I am quite sick of a Win7 limited edition that was pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One 533. I want to have Ubuntu as the only OS on this little thing. I have tested Ubuntu on a pretty unstable system and I am simply in love with it, despite the fact that I am still on the learning path. So my questions is how do I format/erase all previous info, including windows files? I am interested in a real cleanup of the drives rather than just a re-partitioning, because I travel every now and then and I want to prevent any personal data remaining on the drives for anyone with recovery knowledge to sniff through. • 50-synaptics.conf options not working

  How does Ubuntu come up with the default synaptics settings? I've got Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 installed on an Eeepc 900. Out of the box TapButton2 was set to 3, and TapButton3 was set to 2. I have several custom synaptics settings I want as system wide defaults. Right now I use a script with synclient commands I have to run every boot or wake. Pita. It used to be everything went in xorg.conf..which no longer exists. I'm trying to learn the new way, which is apparently conf files at /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d. I edited 50-synaptics.conf to look like: Section "InputClass" Identifier "touchpad catchall" Driver "synaptics" MatchIsTouchpad "on" MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" Option "LockedDrags" "1" Option "TapButton2" "2" Option "TapButton3" "3" EndSection But my next X session (startx -- :2) doesn't have the options configured.

  I am using the following script to overlay a dvdsub stream and a video stream; avconv -i input.mkv -i subtitles.sub -filter_complex "[0:v:0][1:s:0]overlay[vid]" -map "[vid]" -s hd720 -sws_flags lanczos -vcodec libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium ~/Desktop/test.mkv I get the following error ; Stream specifier ':s:0' in filtergraph description [0:v:0][1:s:0]overlay[vid] matches no streams. No matter what I do I just cannot get this to work. Can any one tell me how to 'burn-in' subtitles using avconv (or ffmpeg) ?

• Physics-based dynamic audio generation in games

  I wonder if it is possible to generate audio dynamically without any (!) audio assets, using pure mathematics/physics and some input values like material properties and spatial distribution of content in scene space. What I have in mind is something like a scene, with concrete floor, wooden table and glass on it. Now let's assume force pushes the glass towards the edge of table and then the glass falls onto the floor and shatters. The near-realistic glass destruction itself would be possible using voxels and good physics engine, but what about the sound the glass makes while shattering? I believe there is a way to generate that sound, because physics of sound is fairly known these days, but how computationaly costy that would be? Consumer hardware or supercomputers? Do any of you know some good resources/videos of such an experiment?

• What are your programming idiosyncrasies?

  I noticed that I have a peculiar habit of finishing every line with a space. It carries over from my prose writing where a paragraph can have multiple sentences and so it is very common to follow a period with a space, and I end up doing that automatically for every period (or when it comes to programming- semicolon). It started out as something automatic, but I'm so used to this by now that if I miss the space it actually bothers me and I end up returning to that line to input it. What are some of your programming idiosyncrasies?

• What exactly can shaders be used for?

  I'm not really a 3D person, and I've only used shaders a little in some Three.js examples, and so far I've got an impression that they are only being used for the graphical part of the equation. Although, the (quite cryptic) Wikipedia article and some other sources lead me to believe that they can be used for more than just graphical effects, ie, to program the GPU (Wikipedia). So, the GPU is still a processor, right? With a larger and a different instruction set for easier and faster vector manipulation, but still a processor. Can I use shaders to make regular programs (provided I've got access to the video memory, which is probable)? Edit: regular programs == "Applications", ie create windows/console programs, or at least have some way of drawing things on the screen, maybe even taking user input.

• Oracle Hosts Successful PeopleSoft Customer Advisory Board Meetings

  Last week, Oracle hosted the annual Customer Advisory Board meetings for various PeopleSoft applications, including the PeopleTools CAB.  The three day event at the Oracle headquarters brought together over 90 customers, with over 170 representatives taking part.  This was the largest CAB event PeopleSoft has had to date.  The focus of the event was to share our vision for PeopleSoft, and gain valuable input from our customer base on our direction and focus areas.  The customer feedback we received for the event was extremely positive, matching the sentiment on our side.  The information our CAB members provided was excellent; it will help ensure that we focus on the areas that matter most to our customers.   I’d like to thank all the customers that took the time out of their schedules to hear where we’re looking to go in the future, and provide guidance on how we can best assist our customer base on remaining successful in the marketplace.

• Software, script or a tool to automate managing which tests to run

  I have a batch file that lists all the test files I have and asks me which test I want to perform, like Test. [U]nit, [I]ntegration : i (user input) Integration. [A]ll, [2][U]serInteraction, [3][R]esultGeneration : u 2 User Interaction. Running "mocha integration\2userint.js" ... So essentially I have configured a batch "option" for each test file I have, which I can choose to run individually or all together. But adding and removing tests is a pain. I have to update the batch file everytime a new file is added or changed. Is there a software, script or a tool, that does this automatically, or makes it easier for me to do so? I basically need it to be aware of and ask me which file(s) I want to test. A GUI with checkboxes would be ultimate! but I'll take anything. I'm working in node.js

• Method chaining vs encapsulation

  There is the classic OOP problem of method chaining vs "single-access-point" methods: main.getA().getB().getC().transmogrify(x, y) vs main.getA().transmogrifyMyC(x, y) The first seems to have the advantage that each class is only responsible for a smaller set of operations, and makes everything a lot more modular - adding a method to C doesn't require any effort in A, B or C to expose it. The downside, of course, is weaker encapsulation, which the second code solves. Now A has control of every method that passes through it, and can delegate it to its fields if it wants to. I realize there's no single solution and it of course depends on context, but I would really like to hear some input about other important differences between the two styles, and under what circumstances should I prefer either of them - because right now, when I try to design some code, I feel like I'm just not using the arguments to decide one way or the other.

• Why won't Ubuntu copy large files to FAT32 flash Drives?

  Since I installed 11.10 I am unable to copy large files (say 1gb or more) to ANY usb drive that is formated as FAT. The file starts copying, but soon an error appears, saying "Unable to Copy" . "Error splicing file: Input/output error". I am able to do it via terminal, using the cp command. I use Gnome3, but the same error has happened in Unity as well. Apparently it works if I format the USB drive as NTFS or EXT3, EXT4. But, for many appliances, FAT is necessary. The problem is also not with the USB port, because it works under Windows. It did not happen before, when I had 10.04 installed.

  Hi, I'm planning to integrate an external tool (ffmpeg in my particular case, but it could be anything, in fact, as lolng as its tasks are long running ones). This tool has a lot of command-line parameters. For now, I've done to simple things with it, already requiring me a good bunch of class writing, to embed all the information it can return to me. I now face the even more complex task of having to send it a bunch of parameters and to handle possible errors. So, what is a best way for that ? Create classes containing all possible options Relying upon a reverse equivalent of commons-cli / CliBuilder / OptionParser Directly write all options from user input Obiwan Kenobi powers (or anything I don't even know about) Please notice I do it in an uncommon language (for the sake of me, don't ask me what it is, as it looks like a desperate and sterile union between CoffeeScript and lua), as a consequence, there can be no framework doing what I want in the language I use.

  If I decide to write a simple game both text and graphical (2d) what libraries would I use? (Assume we are using a HTML5 compatible browser) The main things I can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but I am unsure how important this will be to me at first). Perhaps with mixing and chaining sounds or looping forever until stop. Networking (low priority) to connect a user to another or to continuously GET data without multiple request (I know this exist but I don't know how easy it is to setup or use. But this isn't important to me. Its for the question).

  I am attempting to transform the components of a mesh directly using a 4x4 matrix. This is working for the vertex positions, but it is not working for the normals (and probably not the tangents either). • URL Rewrite http to https EXCEPT files in a specific subfolder

  I am trying to force all traffic on my web site to use HTTPS, using the URL Rewrite 2.0 module added to IIS 7.5. I got that working and now have a need to exclude a couple of pages from using SSL. So I need a rule to rewrite all URL except those referencing this folder to HTTPS. I've been banging my head against the wall on this and am hoping someone can help. I tried creating a rule to match all URL except those in a nossl subfolder as in this example: <rule name="HTTP to HTTPS redirect" enabled="true" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(/nossl/.*)" negate="true" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAll" trackAllCaptures="false"> <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="off" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" url="https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}" redirectType="Found" /> </rule> But this doesn't work. • How do I recover a .ogv on ext4?

  Hi! I have very a simple question. How to recover a .ogv file on my /home ext4 partition? I overwrote the .ogv file (I confused input and output in Arista transcoder). I did research. TestDisk can undelete files on FAT and NTFS, but not on EXT4. PhotoRec does not support .ogv recovering. • Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V very slow

  I have been running several Hyper-V VMs on Windows Server 2008 R2 for the past couple of years and enjoying perfectly adequate performance for my testing/development/r&d environments. I'm a software developer so my hardware knowledge is basic however I built the rig using: •Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard •Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) •24GB triple channel RAM The host OS is running on an OCZ SSD and all the VMs are running on a 2TB Marvell SATA3 RAID 0 array consisting of 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 7,200rpm drives. I have tested the speed of the 2TB drive and appear to be getting less than 3Mbs but it can adequately run a 4 VM farm including a DC, (SQL) database and IIS application servers. I recently upgraded the SSD on which the host runs to a 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 and took the opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 and installed the Hyper-V role. I tried importing one of my existing Windows Server 2008 R2 VMs (and converted it to .vhdx) plus I have tried creating a brand new Windows Server 2008 R2 VM but both are running extremely slowly and I can see nothing obvious using the host and guest Task Manager/Resource Monitor tools. In both cases the VM has 8GB RAM (fixed), 4 CPUs, fixed size HD (not expanding) and is using an external virtual network running on a separate NIC to the host. I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest available version and checked the virtualization settings. I have run out of "obvious" (to a developer) things to check/configure and my next option will be to re-install the host OS but before I do I would very much appreciate any advice from any experts out there. • Port 21 will not open. status is closed. forward port 21 to new domains.

  I am having a problem opening port 21 on my Linux Ubuntu server. No matter what i do, i can not get my status to change from closed to open. Here is a recent iptables command i used and the result iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT nmap -p21-22,25,80,443 CCR1 Starting Nmap 4.53 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2012-06-19 03:13 CDT Interesting ports on CCR1.chennaichristianradio.com (5.10.69.98): PORT STATE SERVICE 21/tcp closed ftp 22/tcp open ssh 25/tcp closed smtp 80/tcp open http 443/tcp closed https I also used commands from the advise from this forum http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/iptables-open-ftp-port-21/ I need to open this for FTP access to the server, and ultimately I need to forward port 21 to 2 domains i am setting up.
