• Am I immoral for using a variable name that differs from its type only by case?

  For instance, take this piece of code: var person = new Person(); or for you Pythonistas: person = Person() I'm told constantly how bad this is, but have yet to see an example of the immorality of these two lines of code. To me, person is a Person and trying to give it another name is a waste of time. I suppose in the days before syntax highlighting, this would have been a big deal. But these days, it's pretty easy to tell a type name apart from a variable name. Heck, it's even easy to see the difference here on SO. Or is there something I'm missing? If so, it would be helpful if you could provide an example of code that causes problems.

  I'm having problems using params in the ORDER BY section of my SQL. It doesn't issue any warnings, but prints out nothing. $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT field from table WHERE column = :my_param ORDER BY :order :direction"); $stmt->bindParam(':my_param', $is_live, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':order', $order, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':direction', $direction, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->execute(); The :my_param works, but not :order or :direction. Is it not being internally escaped correctly? Am I stuck inserting it directly in the SQL? Like so: $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT * from table WHERE is_live = :is_live ORDER BY $order $direction"); Is there a PDO::PARAM_COLUMN_NAME constant or some equivalent? • Launch IE with specific BHO enabled

  I have a IE BHO plugin that I only want to be enabled when the user launches IE from my program (The program start IE using CreateProcess()). I don't want this BHO to be enabled when a user launches IE from outside my program, as that would mean any problems in the BHO could potentially mess up the user's normal browsing experience. What's the best way to do this? One way would be to register the BHO, launch IE and then quickly unregister the BHO. This seems kind of messy though, as a crash in the program that launches IE could cause the BHO to remain registered.

  I am trying to parse an expression tree for a linq provider and running into a little snag with booleans. I can parse this no problems. var p = products.Where(x=>x.IsAvailable == true).ToList(); however when its written like this? var p = products.Where(x=>x.IsAvailable).ToList(); i only get a MemberAccess to look at and i can't see how i deduce that it is true or false (!x.IsAvailable). Any help would be great. Thanks.

  I'm just learning WPF. I'm using VS 2008. I've added an Image control to my XAML, and I added a GIF file to the project. If I use the XAML Designer's property panel to set the image's Source property, the drop-down list for the Source property contains the following: C:\Sample Project;component/pinHorizontal.gif There are several problems with this: My project, named "Sample Project," is not in the root of my drive. Why is ";component" in there? If I select this value as given, I get the error "Property value is not valid" (yeah, no kidding). If I go into the XAML source and set the Source property manually, like so: The XAML Designer gives me this error: "The file pinHorizontal.gif is not part of the project or its 'Build Action' property is not set to 'Resource'." Why is this task so difficult? How do I assign an image source?

  There are 2 JTree: JTree1 and JTree2. Note that the nodes (country, city, colors, blue ...) all will be implemented as JCheckboxes so that user can select particular colors for each city or for the whole country by selecting their corresponding checkboxes. Problems: Q1. I want that each country or city can have its own colors selected. Means if a user wants city1.1 to have colors blue and violet and city2.1 to have colors red, then he first have to select the city1.1 checkbox and then select blue and violet, and after that when he selects city2.1, then the checkboxes blue and violet are deselected automatically so that user can select the colors for city2.1. But when the user selects the city1.1 again, then the JTree2should show the selected colors (bule and violet) for city1.1. So for this purpose, Is the JTree (with its nodes as checkboxes) correct option to implement or I should use some other JComponent? If JTree is a correct option, then how can I remember the colors of each city?

  Is there any way to change the name of a dynamic assembly after it has been created? I'm using a framework that uses dynamic methods, and it is creating a dynamic assembly with the same name as my main assembly (which causes problems with WPF when it tries to load resources). So I need to find a workaround, and I thought of trying to change the name of the dynamic assembly. I've tried using GetName() and then setting the Name property, but it appears that GetName returns a clone of the name because my change doesn't stick. What else can I try?

  I'm trying to use SQL Server Profiler (2005) to track down some application performance problems. One of the calls being made is to a table-valued user-defined function. This function wraps a select that joins several tables together. In SQL Server Profiler, the call to the UDF is logged. However, the select that underlies the UDF isn't being logged at all. Because of this, I'm not getting useful data on which tables & indexes are being hit. I'd like to feed this info into the Database Tuning Advisor for some indexing advice. Is there any way (short of unwrapping the queries themselves) to log the tables called by UDFs in Profiler?

  I have a web service method in which I create a particular type of object, use it for a few seconds, and then dispose it. Because of problems arising from multiple threads creating and using instances of this class at the same time, I need to restrict the method so that only one caller at a time ever has one of these objects. To do this, I am creating a private static object: private static object _lock = new object(); ... and then inside the web service method I do this around the critical code: lock (_lock) { using (DangerousObject do = new DangerousObject()) { do.MakeABigMess(); do.CleanItUp(); } } I'm not sure this is working, though. Do I have this right? Will this code ensure that only one instance of DangerousObject is instantiated and in use at a time? Or does each caller get their own copy of _lock, rendering my code here laughable?

  I'm possibly writing a plugin system for a Cocoa application (Mac, not iphone). A common approach is the make each plugin a bundle, then inject the bundle into the main application. I'm concerned with the security implications of doing this, as the bundle will have complete access to the Objective-C runtime. I am especially concerned with a plugin having access to the code that handles registration and serial keys. Another plugin system we are considering is based on distributed notifications. Basically, each plugin will be a separate process, and they will communicate via distributed notifications only. Is there a way to load bundles securely (e.g. sandboxing)? If not, do you see any problems with using distributed notifications? Are there any other plugin architectures that would be better?

  I need to implement a background process that runs on a remote windows server 24/7. My development environment is C#/ASP.NET 3.5. The purpose of the process is to: Send reminder e-mails to employees and customers at appropriate times (say 5:00PM on the day before a job is scheduled) Query and save GPS coordinates of employees when they are supposed to be out on jobs so that I can later verify that their positions were where they were supposed to be. If the process fails (which it probably will, especially when updates are added), I need for it to be restarted immediately (or within just a few minutes) as I would have very serious problems if this process failed to send a notification, log a GPS coordinate, or any of the other tasks its meant to perform.

  I was recently fighting some problems trying to compile an open source library on my Mac that depended on another library and got some errors about incompatible library architectures. Can somebody explain the concept behind compiling a C program for a specific architecture? I have seen the -arch compiler flag before and have seen values passed to it such as ppc, i386 and x86_64 which I assume maps to the CPU "language", but my understanding stops there. If one program uses a particular architecture, do all libraries that it loads need to be on the same architecture as well? How can I tell what architecture a given program/process is running under?

  I'm trying to create a custom control by deriving from a ZedGraphControl I need to add a ProgressBar to the control, but I encountered some problems. When I create a custom control and add both, ZedGraphCOntrol and ProgressBar to it, everything is OK: MyCustomControl { ZedGraphControl ProgressBar } All elemnets are visible and working as expected. But I need to derive from ZGC and when I add a progress bar as a subcontrol of ZedGraphControl: MyCustomControl : ZedGRaphControl { ProgressBar } The progress bar is not visible. Is there any way to force the visibility of ProgressBar? Is it possible, that ZedGraphControl is not displaying its subcontrols? I tried do the same thing with a simple button and it's also not being displayed.

For example, if the method X.foo() uses functionality from Y.foo() and YTest.testFoo() fails, then XTest.testFoo() will fail too. Obviously, XTest.testFoo() can also fail because of problems specific to X.foo(). While this is fine and I still want both tests run, it would be nice if one could annotate a test dependency with XTest.testFoo() pointing to YTest.testFoo(). This way, one could immediately see what functionality used by X.foo() is also failing, and what not. Is there such annotation available in JUnit or elsewhere? Something like: public YTests { @Test @DependsOn(method=org.example.tests.YTest#testFoo) public void testFoo() { // Assert.something(); } }

• Store JsTree order back into database

  Hi I am using JsTree and got some of it working with my database. Such as deleting a node, renaming a node, etc. I am having problems with saving the ROOT folders order back to the database. When I move the root folders, it doesnt save order. When I move the sub folders around, it saves order fine. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?   Hi, I'm having problems compiling a CUDA program that uses GLUT on MacOsX. Here is the command line I use to compile the source: nvcc main.c -o main -Xlinker "-L/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Libraries -lGL -lGLU" "-L/System/Library/Frameworks/GLUT.framework" And here is the errors I get: Undefined symbols: "_glutInitWindowSize", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutInitWindowPosition", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutDisplayFunc", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutInitDisplayMode", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutCreateWindow", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutMainLoop", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o "_glutInit", referenced from: _main in tmpxft_00001612_00000000-1_main.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I am aware that I haven't specified any lib for GLUT but I just can't find it! • OS X contains heapsort in stdlib.h which conflicts with heapsort in sort library

  I'm using Ariel Faigon's sort library, found here: http://www.yendor.com/programming/sort/ I was able to get all my code working on Linux, but unfortunately, when trying to compile with GCC on Mac, its default stdlib.h contains another heapsort, which unfortunately results in a conflicting types error. Here's the man page for Apple heapsort: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man3/heapsort.3.html Commenting out the heapsort in the sort library header causes a whole heap of problems. (pardon the pun) I also briefly thought of commenting out my use of stdlib.h, but I use malloc and realloc, so that won't work at all. Any ideas?
