• cmd.exe version comparison?

  When using batch files or console applications on Windows servers the window in question can allow text to be hightlighted (marked) for copying and pasting. Doing this pauses the batch/application and it will only resume after the copy operation. Or this is what I thought to be true. Recently on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server I noted that whilst the scrolling was paused the operations were not. Does anyone know if my description in the 1st para is true for older windows is not true for Windows 2003 R2 SP2 when it changed a full version comparison table for cmd.exe across different OS' ? Thanks for reading (Windows 2000 tag as that was the OS I used most before 2003 R2)

• IIS won't start

  When I startup my computer, pages from my local webserver (IIS) won't load. In the event viewer(System log) I get the error below. The only way I get IIS to work again is to issue an iisreset.exe. I have Windows XP. Any ideas to fix this? • How to efficiently merge a lot of vCard files for the same person?

  I currently have contact information at several places: old PDA's address book mobile phone's phone book (primarily name, phone number) email client's address book (primarily name, email) web mailer's address book (primarily name, email) instant messenger's contact list (primarily name, im, email, birthday) And there are several social or business networking sites on the Internet where contacts provide information about themselves, like LinkedIn or XING. All those sources can export as vCard, but as you might imagine, I get a lot of vCards for the very same contact that way. Are there any tools where I can import them and then merge them (it may ask me which phone number is more current in case of field clashes of course)? Bonus points if it can track which information I have discarded so when I re-export all information from one of the sources I can't import to (networking sites), it won't ask me again if I want to overwrite phone number of person X with the same ancient number... I hope you understand what I try to accomplish, if not just ask :-)

• Remote Desktop session on Windows Server 2003

  I have some problem when I use Remote Desktop, here some description. I set some application to autorun each time Administrator (console) was login on W2K3 SP2 server I use Remote Desktop from XP SP3, using the same login as Administrator It creates a new session with the same username and the application starts autorun which make duplicity in application I just hoping i can enforce the Remote Desktop client to connect into only one session (console session), toying with Group Policy setting, successfully enforce the one session, but whenever i close remote desktop (disconnect) the console got disconnected too (which I didn't want it to behave like that). I also try some setting to limit connection, still it doesn't behave as I want it too. Simple i just want to use 1 session, but each time we close remote desktop the session still alive, much like when we use VNC solution (RealVNC, UltraVNC, TinyVNC etc.) Any solution(s)?

• How to increase video memory in libvirt/KVM gui?

  In the 'Virtual Hardware details', it lists the model as 'cirrus' with 9MB of RAM. The RAM field cannot be changed, but how to increate the video RAM? My host OS is RH6 and gust OS is Fedora16. EDIT: From guest OS, when I run xvinfo it displays 'no adaptors present'. I was trying to play a video using gstreamers xvimagesink plugin (XFree86 video output plugin using Xv extension). The problem is that xvimagesink is using hardware acceleration for video performance and hence the error Could not initialize Xv output. I guess I'll have to configure hardware acceleration for the guest.

• HTTP/1.1 Status Codes 400 and 417, cannot choose which

  I have been referred to here that it might be of better help, I've got a processing file which handles the user sent data, before that, however, it compares the input from client to the expected values to ensure no client-side data change. I can say I don't know lot about HTTP status codes, but I have made up some research on it, and to choose which one is the best for unexpected input handling. So I came up with: 400 Bad Request: The request cannot be fulfilled due to bad syntax 417 Expectation Failed: The server cannot meet the requirements of the Expect request-header field Now, I cannot be really sure which one to use, I have seen 400 Bad Request being used alot, however, whatI get from explanation is that the error is due to an unexistent request rather than an illegal input. On the other side 417 Expectation Failed seems to just fit for my use, however, I have never seen or experimented this header status before. I need your experience and opinions, thanks alot! • Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. • Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

  The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this? Now I've decided to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstalled Windows from my laptop, restoring the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business), and installed Windows 7 on my desktop PC. • Can't connect to Windows Server 2008 shared folders via VPN connection

  I set up an VPN connection on my 2008 server using RRAS. The VPN seems to work fine. I can connect from outside the network. I am also able to establish a remote access connection via the VPN-IP. However, I can't access my shared folders. After connecting to the VPN I can ping the server, but it is not shown in my networks. using \ip or \server-name doesn't work either, cannot be found. I checked ipconfig and this is what I found regarding the VPN: DNS-Suffix: Description: test Physical Adress: DHCP activated: No Auto-Config: Yes IPv4-Adress: 192.168.2.114 Sub: 255.255.255.255 Standard-gateway: DNS-Server: 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS: activated To clarify my IP-situation: server is connected to router with 192.168.0.x, the test-client is in an external network connected to a router with 192.168.1.x, server-client connection is using static ips with 192.168.2.x Can anyone help me with this one? The VPN should be ok since I am able to establish remote access.

• Where is the actual content in a TCP segment

  When I email something or download a program, or do anything else over a network, where in the segment is the actual content? If I am emailing a 20KB word document, and the maximum data field size in a segment is 1500 bytes, does that mean it takes about 14 segments to mail my document wherever it is going? I get, I think, the OSI model and I have a decent grasp of the IP protocol. I think I understand the concept of header wrapping of each successive layer in the protocol stack. What I can't get a definitive answer to is where does the actual content go in a TCP segment? Is that the datagram? Maybe the fact I am asking proves I have no clue... Many thanks.

• Windows 7 : Any way to disable "show caracter" in WIFI network properties?!

  Hi everyone, Here's my issue. I'm working in a school as IT Tech and I'm currently planning to roll out Windows 7 on students laptop. The issue is : When you go to the properties of a WIFI network, you have the fields to input the WIFI key, WPA2 key here in my case, and you also have a checkbox that allow you to "unmask" the caracters of the wifi key. This is actually the problem. Anyone who can access the WIFI network properties, will be able to see the WIFI key, which is really an issue in a school envrironnement where student are all eager to get the key for their precious IPod Touch, what I don't want to happen for obvious reasons... So, is there a way to disable that checkbox or else, make the field cleared out when the checkbox is checked, just like it was on Windows XP or Vista? Thanks all for your answer.

  I've read multiple news articles that claim Hotmail offers two-factor authentication. One of the articles describes Hotmail's system, saying ...whenever you go to Hotmail...you can choose to get a single-use code–a string of numbers that will be sent via text message to your phone–to use instead of your password. Is this an accurate description of Hotmail's system? If so, does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? If you can use either your password or a single-use code, it seems to me that it does not. Is this system really more secure than just having a password? Doesn't this just make an additional "key" available to a hacker? (I must be wrong here, I know the folks at Microsoft are much smarter than I am).

  I look for good practices for deploying with capistrano. I would like to start out with a short description how I used to do deployment. capistrano is installed locally on a developer's computer. I deploy thought gateway with capistrano option :gateway. Firstly, I thought that with :gateway option I need to have ssh connection only to gateway host, but it turns out that I need ssh connection (public key) to all hosts where I want to deploy to. I would like to find a convenient and secure way to deploy application. For example, in case when new developer starts working, is much more convinient to put his *public_key* only on gateway server and not on all applications servers. On the other hand I don't want him to have any connection to servers in particular ssh to gateway, just because he is developer, he needs to do only deployments. If you are aware of good practices for deploying with capistrano, please, let us know.

  Hi All. First question here on superuser. I sometimes get ad-hoc bug reports from customers, which I need to transfer to our online bug tracker. Works fine for text, but pictures are tedious. I'm looking for a solution to copy-paste images from documents (like excel sheets) in a way that if you paste an image to a file input (or text input) on a html page, the file will automatically be written to disk (tmp dir), and the path written to the file input field. I don't need to use certificates - pre-shared key is sufficient - and the server isn't on a domain. • path problem with mod_rewrite, XDebug, PDT, XAMPP and Windows XP

  My mod_rewrite turns accounts/create into index.php?folder=accounts&action=create, but pdt ignores it, so when I try to start a PHP Script debug session, I have to type a folder location in the file field and pdt doesn't accept. When PDT auto generates the URL for the PHP Web Page debug session, I go to http://localhost/myframe/index.php?XDEBUG%5FSESSION%5FSTART=ECLIPSE%5FDBGP&KEY=12569067976875, but myframe is in the frameworks folder, so I get a 404 error. When I check a breakpoint, uncheck Auto Generate, add frameworks before myframe in URL, set Start Debug from http://localhost/frameworks/myframe/accounts/create in Advanced and click Debug, the debugger doesn't stop at the breakpoint.

• Hyper-V Manager right clicking on remote VM causes MMC error

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server with SP1 that I log into and use to manage virtual machines running on multiple HyperV servers on our domain. Sometimes when I right click on a remote VM the HyperV Manager will crash and display the following error message: If I use the Actions menu on the lower right it works just fine, but for some reason right clicking cause MMC to stop working.   I’m struggling with one of the most frustrating bugs I’ve ever come across. Bug description:   The for command of the command-interpreter cannot see hidden files. Reproduction steps: Create a temporary directory Create a few files Assign a variety of attributes to the files (including hidden) Use a command like for %i in (*) do echo "%i" Expected results:    All files are processed in the for loop either by default or though a switch. Actual results: Files with any attribute other than hidden are processed; files flagged as hidden are skipped There is no switch to the for command to allow it to process hidden files Implications:    There is no way to process all files from the command-prompt. Question:    How the heck can hidden files be processed from the command-prompt or batch-files (at least in Windows if not DOS)?
