• How can I stop an auto-generated Linq to SQL class from loading ALL data?

I have an ASP.NET MVC project, much like the NerdDinner tutorial example. (I'm using MVC 2, but followed the NerdDinner tutorial in order to create it). As per the instructions in part 3 of the tutorial, I've created a Linq-to-SQL model of my database by creating a "Linq to SQL Classes" (.dbml) surface, and dropping my database tables onto it. The designer has automatically added relationships between the generated classes based on my database tables. Let's say that my classes are as per the NerdDinner example, so I have Dinner and RSVP tables, where each Dinner record is associated with many RSVP records - hence in the generated classes, the Dinner object has a RSVPs property which is a list of RSVP objects. My problem is this: it appears (and I'd be gladly proved wrong on this) that as soon as I access a Dinner object, it's loading all of the corresponding RSVP objects, even if I don't use the RSVPs member. First question: is this really the default behavior for the generated classes? In my particular situation, the object graph contains many more tables (which have an order of magnitude more records), and so this is disastrous behaviour - I'd be loading tons of data when all I want to do is show the details of a single parent record. Second question: are there any properties exposed through the designer UI that would let me modify this behavior? (I can't find any). Third question: I've seen a description of how to control the loading of related records in a DataContext by using a DataShape object associated with the DataContext. Is that what I'm meant to do, and if so are there any tutorials like the NerdDinner one that would show not only how to do it, but also suggest a 'pattern' for normal use?

• Unit test for Web Forms MVP presenter has a null Model

  I am using Web Forms MVP to write an DotNetNuke user control. When the 'SubmitContactUs' event is raised in my unit test the presenter attempts to set the 'Message' property on the Modal. However the View.Modal is null in the presenter. Shouldn't the Web Forms MVP framework automatically build a new View.Model object in the presenter? It could be that the 'Arrange' portion of my test is missing something that the presenter needs. Any help would be appreciated. • DataBinding the AJAX Control Toolkit's Rating Control

  I'm attempting to use the AJAX Control Toolkit's Rating control in a DataBinding scenario. I have a ReuseRating column in my database that is a tinyint. It can hold values 1 through 5. Every record in the table has the value set to 1 currently. If I do this in my ItemTemplate everything works fine. • Curve fitting: Find the smoothest function that satisfies a list of constraints.

  Consider the set of non-decreasing surjective (onto) functions from (-inf,inf) to [0,1]. (Typical CDFs satisfy this property.) In other words, for any real number x, 0 <= f(x) <= 1. The logistic function is perhaps the most well-known example. We are now given some constraints in the form of a list of x-values and for each x-value, a pair of y-values that the function must lie between. • Word 2007 COM - Can't directly access a page when word is set to invisible

  I'm using Word 2007 via COM from PHP 5.2 Apache 2.0 on a windows machine. The goal is to programmatically render jpeg thumbnails from each page in a Word document. The code will display the correct number of pages but the for each loop only loops over 1 page. I can only directly access page 1 and 2 in the Pages-Item() collection. If I try to access another page I get the exception: "The requested member of the collection does not exist." If I set the $word-Visible property to 1 I do get all the pages in the foreach loop and I can access any page directly. Everything is working as expected if Word is set to be visible. Even stranger is the fact that if I set Word to be invisible and I don't have the foreach loop I can only access page 1 instead of page 1 and 2 if I do the for each loop. Any pointers on how I can access all the pages in the document and keeping word invisible?

• Why is XmlSerializer so hard to use?

I have to cast from and to object on (de)serialization. Every property has to be fully public. Why aren't we just using Reflection to access private setters? Private fields cannot be serialized. I'd like to decorate private fields with an attribute to have XmlSerializer include them. Did I miss something and XmlSerializer is actually offering the described possibilities? Are there alternate serializers to XML that handle these cases more sophisticatedly? If not: We're in 2010 after all, and .NET has been around for many years. XML serialization is often used, totally standard and should be really easy to perform. Or is my understanding possibly wrong and XML serialization ought not to expose the described features for a good reason? (Feel free to adjust caption or tags. • How to get interpolated message in NHibernate.Validator

I'm trying to integrate NHibernate.Validator with ASP.NET MVC client side validations, and the only problem I found is that I simply can't convert the non-interpolated message to a human-readable one. I thought this would be an easy task, but turned out to be the hardest part of the client-side validation. The main problem is that because it's not server-side, I actually only need the validation attributes that are being used, and I don't actually have an instance or anything else at hand. But is passed to the controller when saving. The way it's set up is this grid will only have 1 horse id at a time (it will exist on a horse's property page.) The only time I've gotten anything to work is when I made it editable, but then that opens it up for the user to modify the id, which isn't a good idea. So is there some way I can set this value before submitting the data? it does exist as a variable on this page, if that helps any (and I've checked that it isn't null). Thanks

Question - comment - comment - comment Answer -comment Answer -comment -comment -comment Answer -comment -comment So, I'm imagining a very high level understanding of this type of system (in PHP, not .Net as I am not yet familiar with .Net) would be like: $question = new Question; $question->load($this_question_id); // from the URL probably echo $question->getTitle(); To load the answers, I imagine it's something like this ("A"): $answers = new Answers; $answers->loadFromQuestion($question->getID()); // or $answers->loadFromQuestion($this_question_id); while($answer = $answers->getAnswer()) { echo $answer->showFormatted(); } Or, would you do ("B"): $answers->setQuestion($question); // inject the whole obj, so we have access to all the data and public methods in $question $answers->loadFromQuestion(); // the ID would be found via $this->question->getID() instead of from the argument passed in while($answer = $answers->getAnswer()) { echo $answer->showFormatted(); } I guess my problem is, I don't know when or if I should be passing in an entire object, and when I should just be passing in a value. Passing in the entire object gives me a lot of flexibility, but it's more memory and subject to change, I'd guess (like a property or method rename). • Javascript error when attempting to open a modal window in a modal window

  The application is running on a windows server 2003 box using asp.net 2.0 and is an IE specific web app. There is a button that opens a form in an iframe using showModalDialog(...) from a function call located in the javascript. Here is an example of the fucntion: function ShowBusinessHoursSubForm( source ) { var retval = window.showModalDialog("htm/" + locLocaleID + "/SubFormHostFrame.htm", source, "dialogWidth:265px;dialogHeight:261px;help:no;scroll:no;status:no;"); } The host frame is loading an aspx page which contains the actual form that is being used. On the form that is opened there is a button that, when clicked, submits changed to the form. However, if no changed were made before the form was submitted, another modal window pops up stating that there were no changed to the form. This modal window is opened through registration of some javascript in the button click event. The code is as follows (C#): string l_S_ErrorScript = "<script type='text/javascript' language='javascript'>window.showModalDialog('htm/" + l_S_Culture + "/NotChangedErrorDialog.htm', '../../" + l_S_SkinPath + "', 'dialogWidth:310px;dialogHeight:145px;scroll:no;help:no;status:no;');</script>"; if(!m_Page.ClientScript.IsStartupScriptRegistered("ErrorScript")) { m_Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "ErrorScript", l_S_ErrorScript); } When the button is clicked and this dialog needs to appear the following javascript error appears: Error: Object doesn't support this property or method The weird thing is, if I access the application locally and try it everything works fine, but accessing from another computer causes the error. Also, depending on what server (we have many servers for testing all with windows server 2003) the error may not occur on another computer either. These computers are running the same software version using the same version of IE with the same settings. I'm inclined to believe that there is some configuration issue somewhere, but with the settings being the same it is hard to tell. I cannot really change how the app works or the technologies used either. Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this?

• text-overflow:ellipsis in Firefox 4?

  The text-overflow:ellipsis; CSS property must be one of the few things that Microsoft has done right for the web. All the other browsers now support it... except Firefox. The Firefox developers have been arguing over it since 2005 but despite the obvious demand for it, they can't seem to actually bring themselves to implement it (even an experimental -moz- implementation would be sufficient). A few years ago, someone worked out a way to hack Firefox 3 to make it support an ellipsis. The hack uses the -moz-binding feature to implement it using XUL. Quite a number of sites are now using this hack. The bad news? Firefox 4 is removing the -moz-binding feature, which means this hack won't work any more. So as soon as Firefox 4 is released (later this month, I hear), we're going to be back to the problem of having it not being able to support this feature. So my question is: Is there any other way around this? (I'm trying to avoid falling back to a Javascript solution if at all possible) [EDIT] Lots of up-votes, so I'm obviously not the only one who wants to know, but I've got one answer so far which basically says 'use javascript'. I'm still hoping for a solution that will either not need JS at all, or at worst only use it as a fall-back where the CSS feature doesn't work. So I'm going to post a bounty on the question, on the off chance that someone, somewhere has found an answer.

• What is the correct date format for a Date column in YUI DataTable ?

  I have produced a data table. All the columns are sortable. It has a date in one column which I formatted dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss . This is different from the default format as defined in the doco, but I should be able to define my own format for non-american formats. (See below) The DataTable class provides a set of built-in static functions to format certain well-known types of data. In your Column definition, if you set a Column's formatter to YAHOO.widget.DataTable.formatDate, that function will render data of type Date with the default syntax of "MM/DD/YYYY". If you would like to bypass a built-in formatter in favor of your own, you can point a Column's formatter to a custom function that you define. The table is generated from HTML Markup, so the data is held within "" tags. This gives me some more clues about compatible string dates for javascript: In general, the RecordSet expects to hold data in native JavaScript types. For instance, a date is expected to be a JavaScript Date instance, not a string like "4/26/2005" in order to sort properly. Converting data types as data comes into your RecordSet is enabled through the parser property in the fields array of your DataSource's responseSchema I suspect that the I'm missing something in the date format. So what is an acceptable string date for javascript, that Yui dataTable will recognise, given that I want format it as "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss" ?

  I have a LINQ query that searches for multiple keywords on multiple columns. The intention is that the user can search for multiple keywords and it will search for the keywords on every property in my Media entity. Here is a simplified example: var result = repository.GetAll<Media>().Where(x => x.Title.Contains("Apples") || x.Description.Contains("Apples") || x.Tags.Contains("Apples") || x.Title.Contains("Oranges") || x.Description.Contains("Oranges") || x.Tags.Contains("Oranges") || x.Title.Contains("Pears") || x.Description.Contains("Pears") || x.Tags.Contains("Pears") ); In other words, I want to search for the keywords Apples, Oranges, and Pears on the columns Title, Description, and Tags. The outputted SQL looks like this: SELECT * FROM Media this_ WHERE (((((((( this_.Title like '%Apples%' or this_.Description like '%Apples%') or this_.Tags like '%Apples%') or this_.Title like '%Oranges%') or this_.Description like '%Oranges%') or this_.Tags like '%Oranges%') or this_.Title like '%Pears%') or this_.Description like '%Pears%') or this_.Tags like '%Pears%') Is this the most optimal SQL in this case? If not, how do I rewrite the LINQ query to create the most optimal SQL statement? I'm using SQLite for testing and SQL Server for actual deployment.

• How to implement Master-Detail with Multi-Selection in WPF?

  Hi, I plan to create a typical Master-Detail scenario, i.e. a collection of items displayed in a ListView via DataBinding to an ICollectionView, and details about the selected item in a separate group of controls (TextBoxes, NumUpDowns...). No problem so far, actually I have already implemented a pretty similar scenario in an older project. However, it should be possible to select multiple items in the ListView and get the appropriate shared values displayed in the detail view. This means, if all selected items have the same value for a property, this value should be displayed in the detail view. If they do not share the same value, the corresponding control should provide some visual clue for the user indicating this, and no value should be displayed (or an "undefined" state in a CheckBox for example). Now, if the user edits the value, this change should be applied to all selected items. Further requirements are: MVVM compatibility (i.e. not too much code-behind) Extendability (new properties/types can be added later on) Does anyone have experience with such a scenario? Actually, I think this should be a very common scenario. However, I could not find any details on that topic anywhere. Thanks! gehho. PS: In the older project mentioned above, I had a solution using a subclass of the ViewModel which handles the special case of multi-selection. It checked all selected items for equality and returned the appropriate values. However, this approach had some drawbacks and somehow seemed like a hack because (besides other smelly things) it was necessary to break the synchronization between the ListView and the detail view and handle it manually.

• Best approach to storing image pixels in bottom-up order in Java

  I have an array of bytes representing an image in Windows BMP format and I would like my library to present it to the Java application as a BufferedImage, without copying the pixel data. The main problem is that all implementations of Raster in the JDK store image pixels in top-down, left-to-right order whereas BMP pixel data is stored bottom-up, left-to-right. If this is not compensated for, the resulting image will be flipped vertically. The most obvious "solution" is to set the SampleModel's scanlineStride property to a negative value and change the band offsets (or the DataBuffer's array offset) to point to the top-left pixel, i.e. the first pixel of the last line in the array. Unfortunately this does not work because all of the SampleModel constructors throw an exception if given a negative scanlineStride argument. I am currently working around it by forcing the scanlineStride field to a negative value using reflection, but I would like to do it in a cleaner and more portable way if possible. e.g. is there another way to fool the Raster or SampleModel into arranging the pixels in bottom-up order but without breaking encapsulation? Or is there a library somewhere that will wrap the Raster and SampleModel, presenting the pixel rows in reverse order? I would prefer to avoid the following approaches: Copying the whole image (for performance reasons. The code must process hundreds of large (= 1Mpixels) images per second and although the whole image must be available to the application, it will normally access only a tiny (but hard-to-predict) portion of the image.) Modifying the DataBuffer to perform coordinate transformation (this actually works but is another "dirty" solution because the buffer should not need to know about the scanline/pixel layout.) Re-implementing the Raster and/or SampleModel interfaces from scratch (but I have a hunch that I will be unable to avoid this.)

  Hi, I have a component mxml file in which i have a view stack, on click of a button i navigate to the first child, now i need to navigate to the second child during onclick of a button present in the second child. All the childs are component files included within the view stack. • My Core Animation block isn't working as I'd expect

  I have a UIView called activityView, which contains two subviews activityIndicator and cancelOperationsButton. These views are embedded in a XIB and wired up to my view controller. I have two methods that deal with activating (showing) and deactivating (hiding) these two subviews: - (void) enableActivityIndicator { [activityIndicator startAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:NO]; } - (void) disableActivityIndicator { [activityIndicator stopAnimating]; [cancelOperationsButton setHidden:YES]; } By themselves, these two methods work fine. • Sorting by dates (including nil) with NSFetchedResultsController

  In my NSFetchedResultsController, I set a sortDescriptor that sorts based on the date property of my managed objects. The problem that I have encountered (along with several others according to Google) is that nil values are sorted at the earliest end rather than the latest end of the date spectrum. I want my list to be sorted earliest, earlier, now, later, latest, nil. As I understand it, this sorting is done at the database level in SQLite and so I cannot construct my own compare: method to provide the sorting I want. I don't want to manually sort in memory, because I would have to give up all of the benefits of NSFetchedResultsController. I can't do compound sorting because the sectionNameKeyPaths are tightly coupled to the date ranges. I could write a routine that redirects indexPath requests so that section 0 in the results controller gets mapped to the last section of the tableView, but I fear that would add a lot of overhead, severely increase the complexity of my code, and be very, very error-prone. The latest idea that I am considering is to map all nil dates to the furthest future date that NSDate supports. My left brain hates this idea, as it feels more like a hack. It will also take a bit of work to implement, since checking for nil factors heavily into how I process dates in my app. I don't want to go this route without first checking for better options. Can anyone think of a better way to get around this problem?

• Using a custom IList obtained through NHibernate

  Hi.I'm trying to write a web page in .NET, using C# and NHibernate 2.1. The problem is that I'm getting a result that is incompatible with a repeater. When I try this: posts.DataSource = whatevervar.; posts.DataBind(); ...I get this: DataBinding: 'System.Object[]' does not contain a property with the name 'user_avatar'. • Problem with Binding Multiple Objects on WPF

  Hi, I'm developing a user control called SearchBox, that will act as a replacer for ComboBox for multiple records, as the performance in ComboBox is low for this scenario, but I'm having a big binding problem. I have a base control with a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem, and my SearchControl shows that control so that the user can select the record. The SearchControl also has a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem on it, and it is being updated when the user selects something on the base control, but the UI, wich has the SearchControl, is not being updated. I used a null converter so that I could see if the property was updating, but it's not.
