• How to lock Windows7 from installing anything.

  A family member continually needs me to reinstall his PC after it gets viruses and spyware. He claims that he never downloads anything but evidence suggests otherwise. Unless there is some way that watching 'videos' can get spyware on there. AFAIK the computer is kept up to date. Possible solutions? Make a login where its impossible for him to install anything. Windows 7 standard account doesn't appear to be enough. Is a standard account enough here? I tried this once before and he still seemed to get IE toolbars installed up the wazoo Somehow make an automated image where if he 'messes up' or even on log off the computer restores the whole drive image. Similar to what I've seen in Kinko's Something I've not thought of.... And I know you are all going to say 'stop fixing it you are an enabler'... yes I know but I'm not going to have another fight with my wife over helping her family... right now I'm doing this to keep her happy not the idiot with the 'video' addiction ;-) So the name of the game is minimizing my overhead.

• Contacts Issue: Google Contacts, Nokia 5800 And Outlook, Sync and Images

  Hello everyone, this is a multi-question, so please, feel free to answer just one or all of them. My actual situation is: Google contacts sync with Nokia 5800 using MFE(google sync), using google's fake "exchange server". Outlook sync with google using GoContact Sync software (http://www.webgear.co.nz/Products/GOContactSync.aspx). What I want, a easy(or not) way to correctly sync the three of them, even if I have to change some of my "escenario". I know outlook<-google contacts sync is not good yet, but if someone can suggest me some better SW than GoContact Sync. It'll be good. What I really want is to sync a least name, phone, email and image. Then, is there a way to get all my google contacts to by default use their own google image? I noted that, usually i have to manually choose it, and sometimes it doesn't work. I'll like to use something or someone's service to do this automatically. I have tried some services like Soocial, but it gives me a lot of trouble after the first sync, because soccial can ONLY get ALL your contacts, not just "My Contacts"; and also it gives me like 100 bad contacts in outlook because of their beta client. The final goal of all of this is to Get only "My Contacts" from google in Outlook and in the 5800 with their images Get ALL my contacts with their default image, meaning, the contact's personal image Get a solution to correctly sync the three of them, using Google's as the base for the rest of them. Thanks in advance. Again, feel free to sugest me solutions to just one or all them.

• How to restore infrared support in Windows XP?

  My infrared port is not working on my Windows XP SP 3 (Thinkpad X60). I can see it Device Manager, and it's status is, that it is working probably. The problem manifests in several ways. Originally I was trying to transfer data from my Polar RS800CX watch, and the Polar ProTrainer 5 software gave me the this error message: "Communication port couldn't be opened". Then I tried to connect the watch to another computer, and the infrared connection was established immediately. I then tried to connect the other computer to my Thinkpad X60. The other computer again immediately showed the Wireless Link icon "'computername' is in range" in the notification area. But nothing is shown on the Thinkpad, and a file transfer to the Thinkpad is unsuccessful with an error message that reports that "the target machine actively refused it [the connection]". This brings me to conclude that the infrared support in Windows on the Thinkpad is somehow broken. This is further supported by the fact that I can't find the "Wireless Link" icon in the Control Panel and when I try to run the irprops.cpl nothing happens. So the question is, how to reinstall the infrared support? Some of the solutions that I have explored is: I have tried to disable/enable the infrared in the BIOS - to trick a re-installation. The IR modules settings on the other computer that can get a successful IR connection is an exact match to the ThinkPad that can't get a connection. The was a problem in Windows XP SP 2 with the Wireless Link icon - MS KB article - but that hotfix can't be applied on SP 3 installation. I also guess that the hotfix is included in SP 3. Any other suggestions?

• How to back up non-standard directories in my user profile with Windows Backup?

  I'm using Windows Backup to back up my Win7 Pro laptop. I'd like to use it to back up my complete user profile, but I only see standard profile directories (e.g. C:\Users\JohnstonJ\Documents) in the list. Non-standard ones aren't there (e.g. C:\Users\JohnstonJ\MyCustomDirectory). What's the best way to handle this? The only thing I can think of is to browse under the "Computer" entry and navigate directly to C:\Users\JohnstonJ and check off the entire profile (to get what's in there, and any new directories that come up). But is that going to back up the profile twice? Cause other unforeseen problems given that I checked it off by navigating through the computer, rather than picking it under the "Data Files" category? (e.g. back up temporary file garbage, files in use problems, etc. that the "Data Files" category might be handling better). Looking for solutions that other people use that are known to work well and still uses the Windows Backup software - I don't really want to fuss with 3rd-party backup software. • Backup program for Windows using non-proprietary format?

  I'm looking at the various local backup programs for windows, and I was wondering which of them use a non-proprietary backup format? By non-proprietary, I mean I want to be able to access at least the latest version of the backed up files either directly, or by using an open-standard format like zip/7z/rdiff... The other thing I'm looking for in a backup program is the ability to create incremental backups. What I have found so far: SyncBack copies files as-is, using separate directories for versioning pretty much the same for all the 'roll you own' task scheduler + rsync/xcopy32/robocopy/MS SyncToy/etc solutions GFI Backup appears to be using Zip files, at least in their 'Business' version, not sure about the free 'Home' version. Didn't try it yet, but it's next on my list. Mozy (!) supports local backup starting with v 2.0 and basically provides a 2nd local copy on a separate partition. Subjectively, it feels slow and resource intensive (I think it took more than a week to finish the first local backup of ~ 300 GB), and does not appear to offer file versioning (arguably, you can get older file versions online). On the positive side, it looks like the local backup is integrated in the restore process which was traditionally a masochistic experience (and this goes for any online backup provider). Other suggestions? I favor ease of use over tons of options (e.g. SyncBack is very flexible but it offers sooo many ways to shoot yourself in the foot...)

• Disabling mouse acceleration in Mac OS X

  I've been looking for a solution to the unusable mouse problem in Mac OS X for ages. I've tried a gazillion programs and fiddled with every setting there is or there can be added. So far, I haven't found a way to get linear mouse response in Mac OS X. At this point I'm seriously considering installing another operating system. But before I do that, or go hacking around OS binaries, maybe someone here has a solution? I want linear mouse response. I want high sensitivity. I like my touchpad acceleration and would like to keep it if possible. Any ideas? P.S. I've been at this for a long time, I'll probably have already tried the most popular answers. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.5 on a MacBook Pro. I don't use a particular brand of mouse. I'm not looking for any commercial solutions. I've tried: Mouse Acceleration Preferences Pane, the Snow Leopard version of which can get me close to a linear response, but at the cost of tracking speed (sensitivity). • Wifi Drops Connections with WPA2-PSK

  I run a small computer lab made up of 10 computers of identical hardware and software (Dell Latitudes with Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) and I use a ZyWALL 2WG as a router/firewall. Nine of the computers connect to the router over wifi using WPA2-PSK encryption while the last one is connected by ethernet cable. I'm having a problem where any computer connected to the wi-fi occasionally drops off the network (it cannot be pinged and the client cannot ping the gateway). It only happens on the wifi side and only when the encryption is WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK. I tried using another router with a different make and model and had no problems. Thinking it could be a software error, I reset the router to factory defaults and installed the newest firmware (V4.04(AQI.8) | 04/09/2010), but still have the problem. The 802.1X log gives the following error User logout because of user disassociation. with this note WPA2-PSK:00242c582ece:logout where 00242c582ece is the mac address of the device. At this point I'm out of things to try and leads to follow. It looks like this user had the same or similar problem, but none of those proposed solutions work for me.

• Low CPU performance with low usage and clock - Windows 8.1

  I recently deleted everything from my PC and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from scratch. When I first booted into Windows everything was extremely slow though the CPU usage was very low (about 1%). After installing some drivers the problem seemed to be solved, I was able to use my PC normally. Today I installed a game and I noticed a strange behavior: the game was playable but the performance worsened more and more in the time. This is the situation BEFORE opening the game (normal): This is AFTER some minutes inside the game (low CPU usage and clock): Some information about my system: PC: Sony Vaio S13 (SVS13A1C5E) OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Intel Core i7-3520M 2.90GHz GPU(1): Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU(2): NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE I tried searching for new drivers and other solutions but noting worked and I don't know what is the cause. I did not checked the temperatures but the fans are not running fast and the PC does not look overheated. Update: Max CPU Temp: 66°C, Max GPU Temp: 61°C The strange thing is that the GPU load is 99% (GPU-Z) and the fan is almost silent. Update 2: I had troubles with Sony Vaio software, I can't get the FN keys and the STAMINA/SPEED switch to work (it is a physical switch to enable/disable the Nvidia card and change the Power Profile). I'm saying this because I remember that before reinstalling Windows there was an option in the Vaio Control Center (now it is not there anymore) that allowed me to choose from something like "priority to performance (ventilation)" or "priority to silence". The current behavior looks like a "priority to silence", but I can't get the stamina-speed switch to work and so I don't see similar oprions in the Vaio Control Center. I don't know if the problem is related to this.

• Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz Virus Impossible to get rid of?!

  Hi Guys I'm new to this forum so I'm unsure whether this is the right place for a question like this. I have a Trojan Horse infection that lives in memory and seems to be impossible to get rid of. I've tried a vew AntiVirus products (Norton, Windows Essentials & AVG Free) all to no avail & I've recently tried a few bootable antivirus solutions I found here: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/ Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2008 (failed - it wouldn't even load the UI, is there a newer one out there?) F Secure Rescue Disk (Updates & Scanner ran, found 10 infections, said it was going to delete or repair them, but didn't get rid of them) Avira found a load of infections but it froze when I tried to interact with the UI after the scan. Every time I run these I'll load Windows after & run AVG, and it still finds Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz (in Services.exe) & Trojan Horse Generic.16.ARSU (in svchost.exe) Is anyone familiar with a virus like this? Can anyone suggest how to approach a solution? Thanks Dave

• SIP and NAT routers?

  Hello SIP was not built with NAT routers in mind, and I'd like to get to the bottom of this issue to check what needs to be done on all devices so it works with NAT routers, and understand in what context it just can't be used and I should check more NAT-friendly alternatives like IAX. A picture being worth a thousand words, here's the layout I need to use: http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/4077/sipandnatrouters.jpg The PBX server is located in the private LAN behind a NAT router connected to the Internet (I know it'd be easier if it were located in the public network, but this router doesn't support DMZ's so the server has to be in the private network) A couple of (soft|hard)phones are located on the same LAN and connected to the PBX server, along with a PSTN gateway (Linksys 3102 or a Digium PCI card) Remote users using (soft|hard)phones are located somewhere on the Net with dynamic IP's and are also located behind NAT routers I may or may not have control over the local NAT router where the PBX server is located, but I have no control over the remote NAT routers, either because the users don't have the computer knowledge to map ports or because the routers are off-limit (eg. web cafés, hotel LAN's, etc.) Is it possible to configure the PBX server, the (soft|hard)phones, and the PSTN gateway so that the all conversations work fine, no matter the endpoints (POTS caller/local phone, POTS caller/remote phone, local phones, remote phone/local phone)? In which cases may I expect problems, and are there solutions? FWIW, I'm leaning toward using Freeswitch, but I could end up using Asterisk if there are technical advantages to it in this context. • Format CD-rom on Windows 7 that Windows 95 can read

  I pulled out my ancient Pentium 100Mhz running Windows 95 to play a game from 1996. This game has a critical bug in it that requires a patch. The problem is, the computer has no way to connect to the Internet or to the LAN. I tried burning a CD-rom on my Windows 7 PC to run on the Win95 PC, but it doesn't even recognize that there's a disc in the drive. I did some research, and apparently Windows 95 can't read UDF format. All the solutions recommend, of course, downloading a driver or fix or somesuch, which is my entire problem in the first place. I tried formatting the CD-rom on my Win7 PC, but all the format choices are versions of UDF. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to format in way that is compatible with Windows 95? EDIT: I think the problem may be that I only have CD-RWs. I think a regular CD-R might work, but I can't find any in the house. I'll see if I can scrounge one up and try that.

• How to deal with DELL support system?

  We have purchased a Dell Optiplex 9010 SSFV for our organization's work. Since the first installation two of the USB keyboard keys were not working properly. I had to press those keys two times simultaneously, on first time keys did not work and for for second time it printed two characters (as it were buffering first character.) Two keys that were not working properly: Hexangrave (Below the ESC key: `) Double Quotes (Left the enter key ") We registered our complaint with DELL and they suggested (with some hard to understand and weird ENGLISH accent) some test and tricks, such as switching to different ports, checking keyboard on different PC, and it worked well with diff. PC(with Windows 7 Home Premium installed). It was clear that it is an OS fault, hence they suggested to re-install OS. Problem began here, we have a project on the run and currently a video editing project setup on our system, so can't re-install system in hurry and also DELL persons were not providing any other solution such as updating keyboard driver, etc. Arguments I am a Software Engg. and don't think it is a feasible solution to re-install entire system for simple problems. This prob is coming since the fresh system installation, so I don't think it will solve the problem. Finally, I had to find solution myself and got it here, now I want to show my disappointment to dell persons or at least tell them that they should improve there support system to not advice to re-install entire system for that simple problems. Notes We have purchased 5 years NEXT business day support from DELL for around 8000 INR (Not for that kind of solutions from DELL). It is Dell India Support System. So can anyone tell me how to tackle dell support system officially, so that they will pay more attention in near future. Thanks

• How to Protect Sensitive (HIPAA) SQL Server Standard Data and Log Files

  I am dealing with electronic personal health information (ePHI or PHI) and HIPAA regulations require that only authorized users can access ePHI. Column-level encryption may be of value for some of the data, but I need the ability to do like searches on some of the PHI fields such as name. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is a feature of SQL Server 2008 for encrypting database and log files. As I understand it this prevents someone who gains access to the MDF, LDF, or backup files from being able to do anything with the files because they are encrypted. TDE is only on enterprise and developer versions of SQL Server and enterprise is cost-prohibitive for my particular scenario. How can I get similar protection on SQL Server Standard? Is there a way to encrypt the database and backup files (is there a third-party tool)? Or just as good, is there a way to prevent the files from being used if the disk were attached to another machine (linux or windows)? Administrator access to the files from the same machine is fine, but I just want to prevent any issues if the disk were removed and hooked up to another machine. What are some of the solutions for this that are out there?

• Play audio over network with Windows 7?

  I have a unique situation where I'd like to stream audio (ALL audio, not just mp3s, etc) from my laptop to another computer over the network. I live in a studio apartment and my laptop is my main computer but I'd like it's audio to play on my htpc with a nice stereo system. Since it's a studio, both computers are in the same room so I don't want 2 sets of speakers. I want my computer to directly play back through the stereo. I used to do this with pulseaudio but my job now requires that I run Windows full time. I'm aware of Shoutcast and other similar streaming solutions but I don't want any transcoding done. It's a waste of CPU and not to mention my laptop fans, and I don't mind the network bandwidth that uncompressed audio requires. Is there a way to run Shoutcast without encoding? Also, I know that Windows Remote Desktop can play audio over the network pretty easily. Is this part of .Net that I could just code a simple app that streams the audio without RD'ing in? I also don't want to run it over a physical wire. :)

• Outlook 2010, 2007 Sync problems after migration from SMTP to Exchange

  Our organization recently switched from an SMTP server to an Exchange server, since then several user's Outlook's are not synchronizing their emails as expected with the Exchange server. Our move over from an SMTP server to an Exchange server consisted of adding the new Exchange account alongside the existing SMTP account, drag-dropping/copy-pasting folders client-side from the SMTP account in the folder pane in outlook, to the newly created Exchange account. The problem happens when a user moves an email to a folder from their inbox or another folder. At this point the email disappears from Outlook client side. Re-syncing the folder, send/receive, closing/opening outlook and even system reboots do not make this email reappear. The Outlook web interface (OWA) reports the email is in fact in the folder they placed it in, and is not deleted. Doing a "search all mail items" for the emails shows that the email is still there; not deleted nor removed. To add to the confusion, when new folders are created and the email is placed in these folders, the synchronization happens without any issue both client side and server side. As the emails are appearing server side, we are confident to presume this is a client side issue. We have tried adding/removing accounts on one system which resulted in the same issue. This was a very long and slow process due to the sheer volume of emails (20gig+ from most users). We have tried reinstalling outlook restoring accounts from back-ups which has not resolved the issue. We also tried upgrading one system from outlook 2007 to outlook 2010 which, again, did not resolve the issue. We have experienced issues with a lot of emails disappearing during the copy-over process in which I'm not convinced it was the best route of migration, but nonetheless we are where we are. Can anyone suggest potential avenues of solutions to resolve this issue? Thank you. • How To Fix Samba File Permission Issues in Mac OSX

  I've had this problem for a long time, here is the basics of it... I use a mixed environment of Windows 7/8 computers with Mac OSX Lion/Mountain Lion. Whenever a Windows computer creates a file on a SMB share on the Mac it no longer has group permissions, only the person who created or updated it can access it. My solution has been to go onto the Mac system and reset permissions for the entire directory structure then everyone can see it again. About the only thing on this that I can find was for OSX pre Snow Leopard that mentioned editing the SMB.CONF file to fix their particular problem (similar to mine, http://www.gladsheim.com/blog/2009/09/19/osx-leopard-and-samba-permissions/). The problem is that now Lion and Mountion Lion no longer have an SMB.CONF file (another web search pointed to the com.apple.smbd.plist (http://kidsreturn.org/?s=smb.conf) but it's an XML file now and I'm not clear on what should be done to THAT to fix the problem. So, short of me writing an Applescript to run every hour to fix permissions, does anyone know a solution to this very frustrating problem? • Exporting Client Data from Groupwise 6.5 to Outlook 2010 without Crashing

  My employer has recently moved from Novell GroupWise 6.5 to Exchange 2010. We've imposed mailbox limits on staff but we still need to move their old messages, contacts, calendars, etc. over to Outlook 2010. Our problem however is this, utilizing the Novell MAPI client is slow within Outlook 2010 and upon exporting messages to a PST file (for later re-attachment, and offline backup purposes) crashes the GroupWise server. Connecting to the server in Outlook via IMAP to export messages to PST is faster and apparently more stable but also crashes the server. We'll be keeping our GroupWise server online internally until then end of the year but I have staff with mailboxes approaching 12 gigabytes, which is fine if we're going to move the data to offline storage (DVD set) but if I keep crashing the server every time I try to get the data I'll just be spinning my wheels. In my first attempts, I tried to move mail for a staff member with 3GB of data. The transfer lasted roughly 8 hours before crashing. I'm wondering if there is an open source solution to my problem. Paid solutions exist but we're a not-for-profit organization and have too many staff to justify the costs of per seat licenses just to migrate mail.

• How to redirect all Internet traffic to OpenVPN Server

  I have seen working solutions around the issue of forcing Internet traffic to go through the OpenVPN server but they are all done in Linux, all I want to know is how to add an entry to the route table in windows to make this happen. connectivity between the client and server is fine, my Windows 7 client can establish a connection to the Windows 2008 Server, but when established Internet traffic is still going from the local Windows 7 machine.   I am trying to do dynamic portforwarding using openssh through a remote computer following this command: ssh -D 6789 rohan@<remote_ip> -p <remote_port> This should set up a socks server on my comp as I assume. I am able to use this for normal browsing but can't connect to IRC or remote ssh (through proxychains).   I am running an email server on 77.245.64.44 and have recently started to have problems with remote delivery of emails sent using this server. Only about 5% of recipients are rejecting the emails, but they all share the following common message... Remote host said: 554 Your access to this mail system has been rejected due to the sending MTA's poor reputation. As far as I can tell my server is not on any blacklists, and it is set up correctly (the reverse DNS checks out and so on). I'm not even sure what the "Sending MTA" is, but I assume it's my server. If anyone could shed any light on this I'd really appreciate it! Here's the full bounce message... • What causes "A disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"?

  I have a virtual machine containing Windows XP SP3. When I resized the VHD file (and the embedded partition), and tried booting, I got: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart Some notes: FixBoot and FixMBR don't help. ChkDsk doesn't help. The partition is indeed active. The partition starts at sector 63 (it also did so before the problem) of cylinder 1, head 1, and is marked as type 0x07 (NTFS) My host OS reads the VHD and the partition completely fine I'm interested in knowing the cause rather than the fix. So "re-format the disk", "reinstall Windows", etc. aren't valid solutions. It's a virtual machine after all... I have nothing to lose, so I don't care about fixing it. I just want to know what's causing this problem, in case I run into it again on a physical machine (which I have done before). • MICR / Check printing

  I want to print my own checks on blank stock from Quicken and QuickBooks. To do so, I need a virtual driver that intercepts the print output from Quicken formats the fields properly, and adds the MICR text at the bottom of the check. This is for Windows 7 or OS X. I have looked at the following: CHAX Works, but crashes a LOT. Not giving me confidence. It is also expensive. VersaCheck Looks promising but looks like it suffers severe feature bloat. I just want to print check and deposit slips, thank you. Ganson Is only for high volume really. It is also designed for batch use vs I just want to print to a virtual printer. More than $2500. GnuMICR is more of a science project. Not yet ready to use and has not been updated for years. There are a lot of solutions on the web, so please don't just google for me. I am looking for specific experience with good solid check printing solution. Thanks!!!

• What is optimal hardware configuration for heavy load LAMP application

  I need to run Linux-Apache-PHP-MySQL application (Moodle e-learning platform) for a large number of concurrent users - I am aiming 5000 users. By concurrent I mean that 5000 people should be able to work with the application at the same time. "Work" means not only do database reads but writes as well. The application is not very typical, since it is doing a lot of inserts/updates on the database, so caching techniques are not helping to much. We are using InnoDB storage engine. In addition application is not written with performance in mind. For instance one Apache thread usually occupies about 30-50 MB of RAM. I would be greatful for information what hardware is needed to build scalable configuration that is able to handle this kind of load. We are using right now two HP DLG 380 with two 4 core processors which are able to handle much lower load (typically 300-500 concurrent users). Is it reasonable to invest in this kind of boxes and build cluster using them or is it better to go with some more high-end hardware? I am particularly curious how many and how powerful servers are needed (number of processors/cores, size of RAM) what network equipment should be used (what kind of switches, network cards) any other hardware, like particular disc storage solutions, etc, that are needed Another thing is how to put together everything, that is what is the most optimal architecture. Clustering with MySQL is rather hard (people are complaining about MySQL Cluster, even here on Stackoverflow).

• Is one server on a vlan unnecessary?

  DETAILS I've been researching web hosting solutions in Japan. Based on this question one of the services available seems to be a VLAN. I've read about the advantages of such a system for a large organization, but there doesn't seem to be much information regarding smaller setups. I take that to mean that for one server it is likely to be unnecessary? My concern is that I don't know how many other servers are on the WAN, so regardless of how many servers I use a VLAN might still be a good idea. SERVER INFO One dedicated server would be used. It would not be virtualized. My Research so far Based on comments here, a VLAN would be useful for mitigating these problems. A user on another server could, either mistakenly or maliciously, assign one of your IP addresses to their server, resulting in a "duplicate IP" situation that would cause connectivity issues. A user on another server could poison the arp cache and potentially redirect traffic to snoop on communication intended to/from your server. (later in the discussion this point was said to be unrealistic.) QUESTION Is it worthwhile getting a vlan for one dedicated server? Will it be easier/the same/ harder to manage?
