  Ok...so for some reason by Ubuntu 10.04 partition won't startup anymore. I'm not exactly sure what I did. I have the feeling that I accidentally removed some important packages. However, when I startup in Recovery Mode and select "dpkg: repair broken packages" I get this output: rm: cannot remove /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*': No such file or directory rm: cannot • how do I update php on centOS?

  I have php 5.1.6 installed on a centOS server, and I need at least 5.3.2 (but would rather install the latest available 5.* version). If I run yum update php it says it will update to 5.1.6-34.el5_8 (mine is 5.1.6-27.el5_5.3)..... what the heck???? Are the available packages for centOS THAT much behind the current version, or is it because yum will by default only update within the subversion after the second dot (or something) and I need to tell it to give me a more recent version? If so how do I do that?

• Looking for alternative to NetNewsWire and Google Reader

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

• How to rsync a large file, with as little CPU and bandwidth expense as possible?

  I have a 500 GB file that I plan on backing up remotely. The file changes often. I'll be rsyncing it from a desktop to a server. Both can run rsync client or server. What is the proper command for this? The ones I've tried sofar has been taking forever or simply acted strange. Example and results: rsync -cv --partial --inplace --no-whole-file /desktop/file1 myserver.com::module/file1 Seems to work, but only if I do it twice (?!). Also, slow. Does the above command do the checksumming on both computers, or only on the sending one? Is it correct otherwise?

• Need Boxee/Vista remote control recommendations

  I have an Acer Aspire X1200 (specs link below) desktop computer that I've installed Boxee on and it works great. And it looks like it's going to be a perfect computer for a media player. • Assisting a user using VNC

  I'm trying to help a friend with their computer remotely. He has a version of VNC, I'm not sure which one, so I downloaded and installed the VNC Viewer and Listening Viewer. I ask my friend for his IP address and port number, and he tells me that every time he's used it, the person giving him assistance (remotely controlling his computer) gave him some kind of number. I should note that my friend is not tech savy, and it may have been an IP address, but I'm not sure. What kind of number would the user be looking for? Does this indicate his version of VNC, Does that even matter? I am completly forign to VNC and don't know where to begin looking for an answer myself, and (for whatever reason) I can't ask my friend to figure out what version of VNC he is using.

• Updating PHP on a Plesk managed Server

  I just updated PHP and MySQl on my VPS with the current Versions from Atomic Repo. Everything worked out fine so far. From console I get the new PHP 5.3: [root@server phpMyAdmin]# php -v PHP 5.3.16 (cli) (built: Aug 20 2012 11:18:05) Copyright (c) 1997-2012 The PHP Group Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies with the ionCube PHP Loader v4.0.5, Copyright (c) 2002-2011, by ionCube Ltd. But through Apache I still get the old version (5.1.6). The server is running some old version of crappy Plesk Panel. That gives me the option to choose between Apache Modul, fCGI and CGI-BIN. Any hints, how to update apache, so it will use the new PHP Version? EDIT: I just needed to restart httpd (/etc/init.d/httpd restart)

• Why does a redirect from a local IP address assume localhost?

  I am developing a web application on my desktop and it is running on port 80. I am able to access the application from my laptop connected to the LAN by entering my desktop's LAN IP address 192.168.1.8. Now, my application sends a redirect after login, but my laptop assumes the final address is localhost/login. If I manually type in the IP address and URI for any page, it shows that I am logged in, so it works as expected. So, why does the redirect assume localhost? Both of my machines are linux-based. The laptop being Chrome OS. I am running nginx which proxies non-static file requests to jetty on port 8080.

• How to show disconnect network drives

  Windows 7 and Vista laptops in my company domain has network drives set up by Win2k8 Server GPO. Normally, when the laptops has ethernet cable plugged in before boot, the network drives connect and appear as expected at the end of startup sequence. However, when the laptop has ethernet cable unplugged, the network drives are not connected, which is fine, but the disconnected icons disappear as well. i.e. the drives are not set up. At the end of the startup sequence, upon reaching desktop, the wireless adapters will connect to the network and the laptop will be able to find the network drive. Hence I want the drives to be setup nonetheless, so that the next attempt to connect, say, via a desktop shortcut, will reestablish the network drive connection. How can this be done?

• Change Logon DPI setting in Windows 8.1

  I love how M$ keeps making decisions for me about how I want my desktop to look. Now they have added per-user dpi settings. The problem this has created is that there is no adjustable dpi setting for the Lock/Logon screen. Let me explain. you can change the dpi setting to be the same across all displays and this does affect the icons and font on the lock/logon screen. However it does not affect any app/program that can run on the lock/logon screen. Ex. I use a 44" flat screen tv for my monitor on my desktop. Big enough for me to sit in my recliner and use my comp. But I don't have a wireless keyboard. And it sucks having the wire from the keyboard running across the floor. Plus I really don't want to keep a keyboard next to me. So I use the on screen keyboard for logging in and quick typing (search, web address, etc.) So the problem is that with the new dpi setup my on screen keyboard takes up nearly half the screen. Does M$ think we are all blind? Oh no I remember they think desktops should look like tablets and phones. I tried looking through the registry to see if I could find a setting for it. In the key HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop there is a string value named "LogicalDPIOverride" with a value of -1. I have a feeling this is where I can fix the issue. I tried changing the value to 0 and to 1 with no change in the result. Instead I noticed that after logging out and back in the -1 value was back in the registry. So now M$ has also added a way for us to not be able to change a setting in the registry. They are making it harder and harder for us power users to be able to do anything with the settings in windows. Soon we will all have the same exact Windows with absolutely no customization. ok sorry for the quick rant. The real question here is. How can I change this defualt dpi crap? Can I use the LogPixels string that worked for dpi in Windows 7?   I recently ordered all the components for a new desktop system to replace my old, dying computer. I wanted to have a really quiet desktop, so I got a case rated for being quiet and opted to try a closed-system CPU water cooling kit (Antec Kuhler H2O 620) that was on sale for a very good price over the Thanksgiving weekend. Most of my components are still in transit, but I became somewhat worried when a friend mentioned that abandoning air cooling units can result in heat buildup inside the case due to heat generated by the video card and other components such as RAM, the northbridge, MOSFETs and voltage regulators radiating heat that the CPU fan would normally at least keep circulating around so it doesn't build up in localized areas. Is this a realistic problem? What other precautions should I take to remove heat from other components? Adding more case fans seems like it would get really noisy. Are there quiet alternatives?

  What is the difference between 32 and 64-bit software? My understanding is that 64-bit can use more RAM, if it's available, because it has a larger address space for it. Is this correct? And, specifically: If I have a 64-bit operating system with lots of RAM, and I install, say, the 32-bit version of MySQL instead of the 64-bit version, will it be unable to use all the available RAM and therefore run slower than the 64-bit version might on the same machine (assuming RAM becomes the bottleneck before processing speed or disk access speed or whatever)? If I have a 32-bit operating system and I install a 64-bit piece of software on it, will it (probably) fail to run?
