• Setting up JDK 7 for IntelliJ on the Mac

  I installed the JDK by downloading the dmg from the Oracle website here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7u9-downloads-1859576.html After installation I tried to setup the JDK in IntelliJ but when I set the location to the JDK in the Project Structure-SDKs screen, only a few libraries were loaded and many (including all libraries from Content/Classes/) were missing. How can I add all of the necessary libraries libraries? The install location for the JDK is /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_07.jdk/Contents/Home I've tried looking in /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/ to no avail.

• mongod fork vs nohup

  I'm currently writing process management software. One package we use is mongo. Is there any difference between launching mongo with mongod --fork --logpath=/my/path/mongo.log and nohup mongod >> /my/path/mongo.log 2>&1 < /dev/null & ? My first thought was that --fork could spawn more processes and/or threads, and I was suggested that --fork could be useful for changing the effective user (downgrading privileges). But we run all under the same user (process manager and mongod), so is there any other difference? Thank you

• Problem with missing JSON functions on PHP 5.2.6 / Plesk 8.4

  I have a vserver running openSuse 10.3, Apache 2 and Plesk 8.4. I can update/upgrade neither, as it is apparently not recommended to upgrade openSuse 10.3 (and an update to the EOL 10.4 does not seem to make much sense) and Plesk fails to update no matter what version I try (even fails to upgrade to 8.4.1). Still I can live with that somehow, primarily because I don’t have the time to do a fresh remote install on the vserver. What really is a problem is, that though the installed PHP is 5.2.6 it has no zip library and no json functions. The first is probably because PHP was not compiled with --enable-zip. The second is a big mystery though. As I understand it, it always comes with PHP unless its compiled with the --disable-json configure option. This is however not the case. And the json extension module is just not there. I even tried to enable it with extension=json.so with no luck either. the configure options of my PHP are (as shipped with Plesk 8.4) '../configure' '--prefix=/usr' '--datadir=/usr/share/php5' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--bindir=/usr/bin' '--with-libdir=lib' '--includedir=/usr/include' '--sysconfdir=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file-path=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file-scan-dir=/etc/php5/conf.d' '--enable-libxml' '--enable-session' '--with-mm' '--with-pcre-regex=/usr' '--enable-xml' '--enable-simplexml' '--enable-spl' '--enable-filter' '--disable-debug' '--enable-inline-optimization' '--disable-rpath' '--disable-static' '--enable-shared' '--program-suffix=5' '--with-pic' '--with-gnu-ld' '--with-system-tzdata=/usr/share/zoneinfo' '--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs2' '--disable-all' '--disable-cli' As I understand it, PECL is not an option with 5.2.6. Or am I mistaken? Even if I was not, the openSuse repository only goes as far as PHP 5.2.4. The openSuse install even came without zypper, which I had to manually install. So is there a way to get ziplib and json running in PHP 5.2.6 without having to recompile the binary?

• Have apache choose a php version based on the extension in the url, but with a single file on the filesystem

  I want to configure a local apache server to serve php files with different php versions. In my document root I have phpinfo.php, now if I go to http://localhost/phpinfo.php4, I want to see the phpinfo.php file processed with php4, if I go to http://localhost/phpinfo.php5 I want to see the same file processed with php5. Note: both php 4 and 5 are already installed side by side, I have no problem configuring apache to treat files that have a .php4 or .php5 extension on the filesystem with the correct php version. What I want is for apache to do the following: If the url-path ends in .php5, serve the file which has a .php extension on the filesystem using the application/x-httpd-php5 handler. If the url-path ends in .php4, serve the same file with the .php extension on the filesystem using the application/x-httpd-php4 handler.

• CGI error from PHP when running exec() on IIS

  Windows Server 2003 x64 PHP 5.2 IIS 6.0 The program Ink2Png.exe is set with Everyone-Read and Execute permissions. As does its dependency (microsoft.ink.dll) PHP Safe Mode is off exec() is passed [the full exe path], space, [full path to another file] This other file also has full read permissions. The output directory has full write permissions. As soon as exec() is hit, the connection dies, the browser does not even receive a full set of http headers, and it reports a CGI error. Examining the output, it appears the program was not even run. Any ideas? How can I figure out what exactly is happening and get it running again? EDIT: Also, it is a .NET application, if that is significant in any way.

• iPhone VPN to iTunes Home Sharing

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

• All in a Day's Work: Unblocking Multiple Downloaded Files with a Single Command

  Files downloaded using Internet Explorer retain Internet Zone permission level and hence are “Blocked” by default on Windows 7 machines. Honestly, while an added overhead for developers; I really appreciate this feature as it provides a good protection layer for casual web users. My workaround is to simply unblock the downloaded zip file (if download was a zip file) which, in turn, unblocks the files stored within. Today however, I was left with a situation where I had to “Open” and “Copy” the content rather than “Save” a zip file. That of course left me with a few dozen files I have to manually unblock. A few minutes of internet search lead me to the link below which worked like a charm: 1-Download streams.exe from SystInternals - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897440.aspx 2-Go to command prompt (cmd.exe) 3-Navigate to where you have streams.exe installed 4-Use command line switches: streams.exe –s –d “<folder path>” This removed the Internet Zone restrictions from all files under “<folder path>” and its subfolders as well. • Why do I sometimes get 'sh: $'\302\211 ... ': command not found' in xterm/sh?

  Sometimes when I simply type a valid command like 'find ...', or anything really, I get back the following, which is completely unexpected and confusing (... is command name I type): sh: $'\302\211...': command not found There is some corruption going on I think. I don't use color in my prompt, I am using the Bash shell in POSIX mode as sh (chsh to /bin/sh and so on - $SHELL is sh). What is going on and why does this keep happening? Anything I can debug? I think this is more of an xterm issue than sh, or at least a combination of the two. • Eliminate default SSL certificate

  I'm setting up a server for local access. I created a CA and have SSL certs signed and working on other domains. The problem is I'm trying to create a cert for a domain name that is the same as the host name? I copied the steps to make the cert for the other domain, but when I create and sign this cert, and modify httpd.conf with the path to the cert and key, the localhost.localdomain cert seems to be taking precedence. In other words, when I view the cert in firefox, it is the localhost.localdomain cert instead of the one I just created. I looked at ssl.conf, and tried to change the default path to the one issued, and I tried to comment out the VirtualHost, but neither worked. How can I override the servers default certificate with the one I issued and signed? Thanks.

  Hi , I want to use directadmin as my web control panel and it needs several packages like g++ , gcc and etc... as usuall I started to type apt-get install g++ and there problems start : dependecy error... then I tried to apt-get -f install and I got this error (Reading database ... 15140 files and directories currently installed.) Removing libc6-xen ... ldconfig: /etc/ld.so.conf.d/libc6-xen.conf:6: hwcap index 0 already defined as nosegneg dpkg: error processing libc6-xen (--remove): subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: libc6-xen E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) what shoud I do? I want to install g++ and all of its dependencies due to using of directadmin I need it. regards.

• GVFS Locations Not Available In ~/.gvfs

  So, I can mount GVFS locations correctly (specifically CIFS) either from the Gnome "Places" menu, or via the command line gvfs-mount, but the filesystem is not mounted in the expected location; ~/.gvfs. In fact, running the mount command does not list any GVFS filesystem at all. This is reproducible for non-root users while the root user behaves as expected. Strace reveals a permissions error for the user mounting the filesystem for the path /home/username/.gvfs. Ownership and permissions are correct and there are no extended attributes for the path as revealed by lsattr. Also, /root/.gvfs and /home/username/.gvfs are on the same filesystem. All packages are current. Any ideas?

• Fix single entry from mbr

  I use EasyBCD to manage my tripleboot of (1) Windows Server 2008 R2, (2) Windows 7 Professional and (3) Ubuntu Linux. While trying to change the order of my boot menu I ended up losing the Windows Server entry. Luckily I had a boot menu backup (.bcd file) that allowed me to restore my boot menu using EasyBCD. However, when I now select the Windows Server option in my boot menu the Windows Server Recovery Environment starts up. So I have to select language/keyboard layout/etc. and then I have 3 options as shown in the image below. . My goal is to fix the one corrupted Windows Server entry from my boot menu without messing up or losing the two other ones. I'm guessing the Recovery Console (Command Prompt) is the next step and that I will be needing bootrec.exe. But when consulting this page: Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows (about half way down there's a link that shows the bootrec.exe options) I'm getting uncertain. The page lists 4 options for bootrec.exe : /FixMbr /FixBoot /ScanOs /RebuildBcd What option do I need to fix just the server entry of my boot menu? Thanks in advance, Sander P.S. All three OS's are on the same physical disk (3 different partitions).   From brain driven development It turns out, that every Function you’ll ever define in Scala, will become an instance of an Implementation which will feature a certain Function Trait. There is a whole bunch of that Function Traits, ranging from Function1 up to Function22. Since Functions are Objects in Scala and Scala is a statically typed language, it has to provide an appropriate type for every Function which comes with a different number of arguments. If you define a Function with two arguments, the compiler picks Function2 as the underlying type. Also, from Michael Froh's blog You need to make FunctionN classes for each number of parameters that you want? Yes, but you define the classes once and then you use them forever, or ideally they're already defined in a library (e.g. Functional Java defines classes F, F2, ..., F8, and the Scala standard library defines classes Function1, ..., Function22) So we have a list of function traits (Scala), and a list of interfaces (Functional-java) to enable us to have first class funtions. I am trying to understand exactly why this is the case. I know, in Java for example, when I write a method say, public int add(int a, int b){ return a + b; } That I cannot go ahead and write add(3,4,5); ( error would be something like : method add cannot be applied to give types ) We simply have to define an interface/trait for functions with different parameters, because of static typing?

• What's the easiest way to create an HTTP proxy which adds basic authentication to requests?

  I am trying to use a service provided by a server which requires basic HTTP authentication, however the application I am using does not support authentication. What I'd like to do is create a proxy that will enable my auth-less application to connect via the proxy (which will add the authentication information) to the server requiring authentication. I'm sure this can be done, however I'm overwhelmed with the number of proxies out there and couldn't find an answer how to do this. Basically it seems all I want to do is have a proxy serve this URL: http://username:password@remoteserver/path as this URL: http://proxyserver/path I can run it on Linux, but a plus if I can run it Windows as well. Open source or at least free is a must. A big plus is if it's fairly straightforward to setup.

  What is runtime optionality? Runtime optionality means writing and packaging your code in such a way that all of the features are available at runtime, but aren't loaded and used if the feature isn't used. The code is separate, and you can even remove the code to save persistent storage if you know the feature will not be used. In native programming terms, it's splitting your application into separate shared libraries so you only have to load what you're using, which means it only impacts volatile memory when enabled at runtime. All the functionality is there, but if it's not used at runtime, it's not loaded. A good example of this in Java is JVMTI, Java's Virtual Machine Tool Interface. On smaller, embedded platforms, these libraries may not be there. If the libraries are not there, there's no effect on the runtime as long as you don't try to use the JVMTI features. There is a trade-off between size/performance and flexibility here. Putting code in separate libraries means loading that code will take longer and it will typically take up more persistent space. However, if the code is rarely used, you can save volatile memory by including it in a separate library. You can also use this method in Java by putting rarely-used code into one or more separate JAR's. Loading a JAR and parsing it takes CPU cycles and volatile memory. Putting all of your application's code into a single JAR means more processing for that JAR. Consider putting rarely-used code in a separate library/JAR.

• Launch apps or run commands on Windows via shortcuts

  Is it possible to register shortcuts on Windows 7 so that regardless where you are looking (Desktop, a folder etc) the shortcut gets "heard" and the appropriate action is performed. For example, creating a shortcut in the System32 folder which will work if you use Run with the shortcut's name, will not work if you set a key combination when focus is set on the Desktop for example. Is there a native way of registering top-level shortcuts or even an application for enabling this? Example of things I want keyboard shortcuts for: open a specific folder like %path% create a new .js file in the current folder launch an application eventually with its path set to the current location if the app supports this (e.g. command prompt) Thank you.

• iTunes memory usage

  Why does iTunes use upwards of 70 megs of ram when it is minimized to my system tray playing music? -- Update -- I understand that iTunes is a resource hog :) What I'm trying to find out, is what part of iTunes is using all that ram. Is it the music library? If I have a smaller music library, will it use less ram? Is it loading all the Album Artwork into ram for some dumb reason? Additionally, is there any recommendations on what someone could do to reduce the amount of ram it is using?

• When can I publish a software tool written at work?

  I'm working on a software problem at work that is fairly generic, but I can't find a library I like to solve it, so I'm considering writing one myself (at least a bare-bones version). I'll be writing some if not all of the 1.0 version at work, since I need it for the project. If turns out well I might want to bring the work home and polish it up just for fun, and maybe release it as an open-source project. However, I'm concerned that if I wrote the 1.0 version at work I may not be allowed to do this from a legal sense. Obviously I could ask my boss (who probably won't care), but I'm curious how other programmers have dealt with this issue and where the law stands here. My one sentence question is, When is it okay (legally/ethically) to open-source a software tool originally written by you for work at work? What if you have expanded the original source significantly during off-hours? Follow-up: Suppose I write the whole thing at home on my time then simply use it at work, does that change things drastically? Follow-up 2: Note that I'm not trying to rip off my employer (I understand that they're paying me to build products that they own)--I'm just wondering if there's a fair way of doing this for all involved... It would be nice if some nonprofit down the road could use my code and save them some time. Also, there's another issue at stake. If I write the library for a very simple, generic thing (like HTML tables in Javascript), does that mean I can never again do so on my own time without putting myself at legal risk (even if it was a whole new fresh rewrite or a segment of a larger project). Am I surrendering my right to write code for this sort of project for the rest of my life (without this company's permission), since the code at work might still be somewhere in my brain influencing me? This seems related to software patents, as a side-note.

• Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32 (Mounted Drives) ???

  Hi guys, I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two windows-xp machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is = Shared folders on Ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (even if I provide admin login details!!!). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists... Here is the smdb.conf I am using...
