• Is How the Company Makes Its Money One of The Most Important Determining Factors in their work environment, culture, etc

  This is a viewpoint I've started to realize recently about some companies that I have worked for. They had their own software product that they developed in-house but most of the focus was on building an in-person sales team to push their product to businesses throughout the country. I figure that companies that are exclusively "online", meaning that their revenue source comes from online transactions where there is no "face" of the company to the customer would have a different work culture. Just curious if anyone has worked for both types of companies and notices a difference. I myself am hoping to get more into contract programming and figure that companies that don't have to employ a sales-force and things like that would be more focused on technology and maybe even willing to be flexible on partial telecommute, etc

• Cannot Start My System

  I have installed Ubuntu Studio 13.10 installed on my system. Today I have rebooted it and now it is not starting or booting again, the logo is seen and there appears an error message that says :- [23.755113] systemd-udevd[329]: inotify_add_watch(6, /dev/sdb, 10) failed. No such file or directory After this message the system doesn't start. I have done a boot repair through live CD, but that also doesn't helps me. Here is the link of the boot repair process. Please help me how to restore my system without loosing my data

• Email forwarding to gmail accounts instead of maintaining a mail server?

  I want to set up 4-5 email addresses on my newly purchased domain(from namecheap.com), for team size of just 2-3 people. But I really don't want to maintain my own mail server(don't have the experience as well as want to avoid the expenses involved, may be I could have kept the mail server alongside my webapp on the web server, but I would avoid). So I came across a workaround option to forward the emails. Thus I could setup email forwarding from namecheap's management console to my free gmail accounts. So all my emails would come to gmail account, convenient & familiar interface as well free. Are there any serious drawbacks of this approach ?

• All traffic is passed through OpenVPN although not requested

  I have a bash script on a Ubuntu box which searches for the fastest openvpn server, connects, and binds one program to the tun0 interface. Unfortunately, all traffic is being passed through the VPN. Does anybody know what's going on? The relevant line follows: openvpn --daemon --config $cfile --auth-user-pass ipvanish.pass --status openvpn-status.log There don't seem to be any entries in iptables when I enter sudo iptables --list. • How to enable a Web portal-based enterprise platform on different domains and hosts without customization [on hold]

  At Coscend, a cloud and communications software product company, we have built a Web portal-based collaboration platform that we like to host on five different Windows- and Linux-based servers in different hosting environments that run Web servers. Each of these Windows and Linux servers has a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Our team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux and Windows servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of our pages, the variables or objects would replace that. (3) This is part of making these JavaScript modules portable and re-usable for different environments and instances. The portal is written in JavaScript that is embedded in HTML5 and padded with CSS3. Other technologies include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL.

• Auto mount USB drive with permissions for all users

  I have an Ubuntu 14.04 based Media Center and I store the media files on a USB HDD. I add files to drive directly on a Mac so I have it formatted as FAT32. The problem is that after reconnecting the drive to the Ubuntu, it mounts at /media/user/drivename and only the root user is allowed access. I need several applications to have full access to this drive. I can change file permissions in the terminal but it doesn't change because of the /media/user location. I am able to manually sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/drivename & sudo chmod 777 /media/drivename but the mount point changes each time. Is there a way to make this drive always mount where root and other applications have access?

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible.   Our site currently is going to require our users to download a player to view videos they will want to view on our site. The videos get uploaded by users from various sources (smartphones in 3gp format for example). However most people have Flash on their machines. I am trying to 'make a gentle stand' and tell the team that requiring a download of a video player is not acceptable. My thinking is this: instead of allowing people to upload 3gp and other formats then re-serving the exact format on REQUESTs from our site's users we will instead use a video converter such as FFMpeg to convert every uploaded video to FLV for viewing on flash. so when a user requests to view one of the videos on our site -- boom they probably already have Flash installed so we just play the video in their Flash player. I feel serving up FLV flash video is best. Does it ring true that requiring, say, a 3gp player download just to view a video is the wrong approach?

• How do I restore GRUB 2?

  I upgraded my laptop with an SSD, moving my old HDD to where the DVD-drive was, so that I could have speed and storage. Now, I have reinstalled Ubuntu on the SSD, deleting all the partitions on the old HDD to make space for a data partition. But now the laptop doesn't even get to GRUB 2 if the HDD is plugged in! If I take it out, everything works, but as soon as I plug it in and retry to boot, I won't find GRUB. At first, I thought it was because of the boot order, but the order was OK: first the notebook hard drive (SSD) and then the CD/DVD drive (which in reality is the HDD). How can I fix it? Doing a simple grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.. The SSD is sda, and the HDD is sdb.

• Programming vs Planning

  Recently I have been tasked with more High level planning assignments due to the lead developer of my team leaving. I hate long term planning. My brain just doesn't naturally seem wired for it and I am not interested enough in it to spend the time to learn it (it is hard enough to keep up with the programming side of the picture). Can I still be a good programmer without being a high level planer too? Are you expected to be good at planning out the entire product and picking a date, as part of being a senior programmer. Is it possible to be a good programmer and not a high level planner?

  As a Java developer, I am developing trying to use the clean code rules. But in my team we are facing a concrete problem: We have a business layer offering a service called "createObject", this service makes a lot of operation which can result to problem. E.g: parentObjectDontExist, objectAlreadyExist, dontHaveAuthorizationToCreate, operationFailed... and we want the UI using this service to display different information messages depending which error occurred. In old java dev, we should have create all signed exception type and throw it in createObject. As Clean code says, it is forbidden to use Exception for business logic AND signed exceptions are evil... Why not...But i don't know how to solved this problem and i don't want to use return code.   I'm about to create a do-everything dashboard for my team and am still having second thoughts about my project/solution structure. Since this could be a long ongoing project, I want to get the structure right from the beginning. This is what I had in mind: Create a solution named "doEverythingDashboard" Delete the project named "doEverythingDashboard" under the solution "doEverythingDashboard" Create winform project named "interface" Create console applications projects for each functionality of "doEverythingDashboard" Reference each console application in "interface" Does this make any sense? Would it make more sense to just have one project and create a class per functionality instead of an entire project?

• What type of application is this called?

  I am working on a web-based application which combines elements of what my client would call a CMS (content management system) and CRM (customer relations management) but also adds in many other business-specific features such as bookings management, staff task allocation management, wages calculations, document version control etc. However, I'm struggling to find a catch-all term for this type of application so I can research how other people have gone about creating such an integrated solution. Can anyone recommend a term I can use to refer to this, both internally in our team, for the client so they know what to call the 'system' and also for me personally, so that I can ask the Stack community further questions?

• How to Automatically run two commands after login?

  I have these two commands that I need to manually run every time after login: autossh -M 2000 -N -f -q -D 127.0.0.1:7070 [email protected] and sudo mkdir /media/C sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/C I'd like to make them automatically run every time I boot and login to my computer. I'm currently using 10.04LTS. BTW, I only vaguely know what init.d or runlevel mean. But I still prefer to know a command-line based way to achieve this, not a fancy GUI way. Also, the autossh will only succeed after Ubuntu automatically detect and connect to my network, so should we let it retry infinitely until successfully executed? Thank you!

• Why don't we store the syntax tree instead of the source code?

  We have a lot of programming languages. Every language is parsed and syntax checked before translated into code so an abstract syntax tree is built. We have this abstract syntax tree, why don't we store this syntax tree instead of the source code (or next to the source code)? By using an AST instead of the source code. Every programmer in a team can serialize this tree to any language, they want (with the appropriate context free grammar) and parse back to AST when they finished. So this would eliminate the debate about the coding style questions (where to put the { and }, where to put whitespace, indentation, etc.) What are the pros and cons of this approach?

• Change AccountName/LoginName for a SharePoint User (SPUser)

  Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles.

  What should drive the decision behind doing development upon one or more than one framework? For instance, an ERP is (mostly) run on a Windows station. It leverages full access to device's resources, like printers, barcode readers, fingerprint readers and the like. It's usually more responsive and easier do develop with. That being said, some parts of it must be accessed exclusively in self-service mode, by enterprise's customers, suppliers and partners. This could be accomplished with smartphones, tablets, or even desktops running a web browser. What are the economics behind that? Should two team be kept, each one doing work upon its own framework? Or the most permissive framework should be chosen? Should I care something other than HTML technologies? Should I consider native technology for each device?

• "Google files": Building a web interface to find/ack/grep

  I am working on a project where we would like to have build a web interface that gives the user the ability to "Google" files in a directory in a remote machine. For example, the user would type a string in a box, and then the system would find all files that contain that string and present them in the browser. The system would then give the user the ability click on any of the files to open them/display them in the browser. We want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible, but don't really know where to start (none of us in the team have much experience building websites). There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?
