• Calling Knowledge Workers: Make a Difference in the User Experience

• Are there any surveys on to what degree developers like or hate scrum?

  Background: During a conference an analyst pointed out in a tweet that developers hate scrum. Myself and another person responded that this was not the case, and started discussing different scenarios on why developers would dislike scrum. One of the scenarios where that lazy developers are not able to hide in a scrum project. They are constantly challenged by the team to contribute. This discussion resulted in a blog post and video http://elsewhat.com/2010/05/20/lazy-developers-hate-agile-and%C2%A0scrum/ I've gotten three comments which I've tried to answer in a neutral way, but they comments do point out that there are some people who loathe scrum (and I am always 100% certain they are not lazy developers). • juju: How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm? • Continuing to code on large projects

  I am a hobbyist programmer, and I've started many medium - sized projects to work on just by myself. These include games, a raytracer, physics simulations etc. By the time these projects get to a certain size (around 5000 lines), I begin to slow down in adding features to the program. This is not because of a lack of ideas of what to implement in a program, but rather a struggle in how to go about it. In particular, I'm afraid of breaking what I already have working in order to implement a new feature. I've tried using version control like Git and Subversion, but these seem unnecessary when you are a one man team. I simply have a folder of "versions" of my program, one for each major change I make. How do I keep coding past this 5000 line mark? What about the 50000 line mark?

• Amnesic Environment

  My team is looking for a technical term which may or may not exist. We are trying to describe an environment, such as a database, which has been built up over time with little or documentation about the change process that has gone into it. Generally these are legacy systems who's original developers have long since moved on and they are in such a tangled and unmanageable state that the only way to recreate the environment, say for testing purposes, is to copy it and do your best guess at re-configuring it for its new purpose. So far the best term we have come up with is Amnesic, such as "setting up the new test environment is going to be a challenge because it is an amnesic db." However, we are still not quite happy with the term and were wondering if a better and/or more accepted term for this situation exists.

• NASCIO Award for NetBeans Platform Legislative Software

  Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems. • Unit testing multiple conditions in an IF statement

  I have a chunk of code that looks something like this: function bool PassesBusinessRules() { bool meetsBusinessRules = false; if (PassesBusinessRule1 && PassesBusinessRule2 && PassesBusinessRule3) { meetsBusinessRules= true; } return meetsBusinessRules; } I believe there should be four unit tests for this particular function. Three to test each of the conditions in the if statement and ensure it returns false. And another test that makes sure the function returns true. Question: Should there actually be ten unit tests instead? Nine that checks each of the possible failure paths. IE: False False False False False True False True False And so on for each possible combination. I think that is overkill, but some of the other members on my team do not. The way I look at it is if BusinessRule1 fails then it should always return false, it doesn't matter if it was checked first or last.

• Is there ever a time when creating a level/world editor with your game is a bad idea?

  I have created a few smaller games on my own in the past. My approach has always been to create a completed editor where it has all the functionality needed to save a level file and load it into the game. This has always made most sense to me but I keep hearing from people that a game is never fully done in the editor. I have never worked in a game development team and so I don't have first hand experience, but not adding everything needed to make the game to the editor just seams wrong. Am I missing something? Is there ever a reason not to add a tool to the editor?

• Programers first day at work [closed]

  Next week I am getting my first job as a programmer in a well known company. I have worked in other companies before, but mostly in IT department. As you can understand, I am very determined to succeed in there. I have found some related articles in the Web, but I am not even sure they are written from developers. So I am asking you, to tell us about what will you do in another way if you could "reverse" the time, and what can I do to succeed. Of course "work hard" is one of them but what about book/article reading, certifications, good practises to make good impression to my team leader or whatever else you think would help? I know that it maybe fit better at wordplace.stackexchange.com, but this is a programmer oriented post and can only be answered by experienced programmers. Thank you.

• After installing ubuntu, all my partitions are gone. Boot-repair log

  I have an HP Pavilion Sleekbook that came with windows 8 pre-installed. I had trouble dual booting after installing ubuntu, so I disabled safeboot on bios and proceeded to try boot-repair, nothing happened. No dual boot yet. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu, but without the manual partitioning. So I chose to erase ubuntu 13 and reinstall it. Instead it deleted all my HP recovery partitions and windows as well. Here is the log of boot-repair. http://paste.ubuntu.com/6354919/ Gparted and fdisk only show one partition: /dev/sda1 I am wondering if you could suggest any way of recovering my windows partition and have a working windows 8 again? I need some information there with urgency. If you could help me I will be welcome. I am desperated. Thanks

• How to force update-grub to use UUID?

  When I run "update-grub", the file "grub.cfg" will contain lines like this. menuentry 'Ubuntu...' { ... linux /boot/vmlinuz... root=/dev/md124 ... ... } For the line of linux, is it possible to let it use UUID? Like, linux /boot/vmlinux... root=UUID=xxx Right now, every time after I do update-grub, I have to manually edit the line to use UUID. Otherwise, the boot will fail. Thanks for the help.

• Can't find my DVD drive in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am completely new to Linux, due to some problems in my Windows I decided to give Linux a try. I am quite liking it accept for some minor issues. The biggest of them is that I cannot find my DVD drive in Ubuntu. After I insert the disk, the drive's green light flickers and then nothing. I don't get anything on my unity bar or desktop. There is no folder inside my /dev folder which indicates a dvd drive. There is a cdrom folder in my root folder but nothing is there. If you guys know what's wrong, I'd appreciate the help. Am a complete newbie so don't expect me to know anything about Ubuntu, although I have spent lots of hours in last 2 days googling my issue so I have basic information...

• What to use for an event listing site? [on hold]

  I have a site which lets users buy & sell tickets, but it's built on wordpress & buddypress. So it's very heavy and messy. I would like to re-do the whole site on something lighter, cleaner and solid. The main functionality for user would have to be as follows: Register or login via Facebook. Create events and sell tickets to them. See ticket sales statistics Upload photos and associate those with events. Buy event tickets, print pdf ticket. Comment, favourite and like events. What would be your suggestions? PHP framework? CMS? CMF? I must say that I'm a front-end dev so building a system from scratch on my own would take a while. I'd be interested more in a "skeleton" app solution or something similar.

• What to do if I hate C++ header files?

  I was always confused about header files. They are so strange: you include .h file which doesn't include .cpp but .cpp are somehow compiled too. NOTE: I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE HEADERS, PLEASE DON'T TELL ME I'M STUPID OR SHOULD USE OTHER LANGUAGE Recently I joined a team project, and of course, both .h and .cpp are used. I understand that this is very important, but I can't live with copy-pasting every function declaration in each of multiple classes we have. How do I handle the 2-file convention efficiently? Are there any tools to help with that, or automatically change one file that looks like example below to .h and .cpp? (specifically for MS VC++ 2010) class A { ... • Why we need apache Tomcat server to deploy any application. or what are the requirements to deploy any code or release?

So my question is: What is apache tomcat and why we need it? Can't we deploy any piece of code or any application without apache tomcat? For windows, what framework we need to deploy(or same tomcat can be used for same)? Please make me understand the basic concept so that I can understand the deploy process or per-requisites of deploying process. what I know (to deploy) Just copy the tar file or zip file to any concerned dev environment and restart the server. • Should we use python 2.6 or 2.7 or 3.x?

  The version of python which I am using is 2.6, and there is a 2.7 and 3.x. Usually I use python for some trivial program/snippet. I realize there are some major difference between 2.x and 3.x. I would really like to know, if I am going to make a bigger project with python, which version of python should I use? Should I upgrade to 2.7, or go to 3.x or stay with 2.6? The decision should be based on these terms: Number of user in the internet as a community. More users mean more open-source package and help from them. Functionality. • How to handle situation of programmer stealing credit for your project [on hold]

  There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?
