• Ubuntu studio/xubuntu 12.04 instead of Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 for CAD/ arhcitectural workflow. Worth it?

  I am currently using Ubuntu 12.10. So, as described in the title I am planning to install Ubuntu studio. The programs i use are Blender, Maya 2013, NukeX, Bricscad, Sketchup (with wine) and also i am planning to install revit architecture through VirtualBox. Well, I am using a quad-core CPU and i want to have all the power of my system for rendering/modelling. So, i decided to try a more lightweight desktop than unity. Also, what made me to decide this, is that when i tried to install Bricscad v12 the program does not work. So, i thought that if i want something more professional for my work i should have only LTS versions of lightweight Ubuntu. So, my 2 questions are :1) Worth it? 2) Can i have global menu(close,minimize,maximize buttons, menu) like ubuntu/unity? Thanks

• SQL IO and SAN troubles

  We are running two servers with identical software setup but different hardware. The first one is a VM on VMWare on a normal tower server with dual core xeons, 16 GB RAM and a 7200 RPM drive. The second one is a VM on XenServer on a powerful brand new rack server, with 4 core xeons and shared storage. We are running Dynamics AX 2012 and SQL Server 2008 R2. When I insert 15 000 records into a table on the slow tower server (as a test), it does so in 13 seconds. On the fast server it takes 33 seconds. I re-ran these tests several times with the same results. I have a feeling it is some sort of IO bottleneck, so I ran SQLIO on both. However, the 64 write test is incredibly slow on the rack server. (68 mb/sec on the slow tower vs 21 mb/s on the rack). The read speed for 64k also seems slow. Is this enough to say there is some sort of bottleneck with the shared storage? I need to know if I can take this evidence and say we need to launch an investigation into this. Any help is appreciated.

  So I've been following the tutorials from the book Sean James's "3D Graphics with XNA Game Studio 4.0", and have been doing fine until i reached the shadow mapping part. in this book it creates point lights with a Sphere model. my first Q is how to draw a directional Light with this frame work? secondly it can do shadow mapping just for one light, how can i do shadow mapping for all or parts of the lights in the game? i just want to know how to modify this codes to do the above tasks.   So I'm reading up on ASP.NET with VB.NET and I want to start making my own, professionally built website using ASP. I'm wondering though; I'm still using the basics so I'm really just a novice, but how much should I rely on Visual Studio to create my elements? Should I make my own text boxes and have my own login routine, or should I just use ASP's login features? I know eventually you have to use your own classes and such which is where the real coding comes in, but I'm not sure how relaible, flexible and secure the pre-wrote elements are? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This leads to classes constantly growing and to severe duplication. I want to add line items to class definitions from which a developer could judge what this class has. Would it help? • How to prevent Android bluetooth RFCOMM connection from dying immediately after .connect()?

  I'm trying to connect to a Zeemote (http://zeemote.com/) gaming controller from Moto Droid running 2.0.1 firmware. The test application below does connect to the device (LED flashes) but connection is dropped immediately after that. I can connect to the device perfectly fine using bluez tools (log attached as well). I'm quite at a loss here, I work on it for so long that I ran out of ideas so any help would be very much appreciated.   I am writing a WPF chart and use Visuals for performance.   I am trying to generate a sql statement to be used in Oracle11g, using linq. The problem arises when using dates: The SQL generated by linq gives SELECT * FROM <table> WHERE start_date > '24/11/2012 00:00:00' and end_date < '28/11/2012 00:00:00' This causes an oracle error: ORA-01830 - date format picture ends before converting entire input string Adding TO_DATE to the query fixes the ORA-01830, as it is converting the string to a oracle date whilst now knowing the date format. SELECT * FROM <table> WHERE start_date > TO_DATE('24/11/2012 00:00:00','DD/MM/YYYY HH24:MI:SS') and end_date < TO_DATE('28/11/2012 00:00:00','DD/MM/YYYY HH24:MI:SS') So, is there a way to add TO_DATE to LINQ (for oracle)? If not, please tell me how to work around this issue. Thanks

But when I did an edit to a file and then do a 'git commit -a -m "test"' and then do a git push. Without an ORM framework, I could probably echo the sql easily, but with a framework, how can I find out what SQL its trying to execute?   That is, in Mercurial, if Peter cloned from me by hg clone c:\mycode into his e:\code let's say there is a file code.txt and it contains the text the code is 7 Now, when I change it to the code is 11 and hg commit, then he can get my code using hg pull and hg update. Now his version says the code is 11 But if I decide the change was wrong and hg rollback, then my repository should have the 7 version, while the working directory should have the 11 version. So when Peter does an hg pull and hg update, he should be sync'ed up to my current repository, which is the 7, but I found that it is not the case -- he still gets the 11 version. Why is that? Can he get the rolled back code (the 7)? Does Git behave the same way too?
