• MySQL has stopped accepting connections from other users than root

  Hi there. I'm running a mysql-server a long with apache and tomcat on a Gentoo box. To administer mysql I'm using phpMyAdmin. A couple of hours ago I received a call -- a user was unable to login to phpmyadmin. I logged on to phpmyadmin with the root user, and reset the password. The user was still not able to login. I then decided to give it a go myself, and even I wasn't able to login. I tried creating several user accounts, none of them were able to access mysql via jdbc/mysql-client/phpmyadmin. The only user that seems to work is root. What's even more strange is that websites that connect to mysql with a user other than root are still able to login and retrieve content from the database (it's mainly wordpress and a tomcat webapp). I have made sure it's not just cached, I was able to post SQL queries to the database via these web apps still. However, I am unable to login to phpmyadmin/mysql-client with this user and I am also unable to set up a connection with this user for any new web-applications. Any help is immensely appreciated.

• Understanding MySQL Query Caches and when to implement it?

  On our current MySQL server query cache is enabled. Qchache_hits: 31913 Qchache_inserts: 50959 Qchache_lowmem_prunes: 9320 Qchache_not_chached: 209320 Qchache_queries_in_chace: 986 com_update: 0 com_delete: 0 I do not fully understand the Query cache - I am reading about it currently and trying to understand it. Our database holds inventory data, customer data, employee data, sales data and so forth. The query is very rarely run more than once. The possibility of a query being run twice is viewing a specific sales information twice. But basically everything in our system changes constantly. It is always being updated, deleted, insterted and off the top of my head I can't picture users running the same query twice within a week. Do I even need to have the query cache enabled? I am guessing that the inserts means 51k entries have been added, but only 986 of those are being stored? Would an idea be to refresh the cache, and watch it for a week and check how many of the queries in cached are accessed maybe on a weekly basis to see if it is actually returning any benefits? Any help/guidance on this is appreciated, thanks

• Does cloud computing offer this? [closed]

  I have some newb questions I want answering please about cloud hosting - we are currently looking at Rackspace and getting a windows box. This is the situation: We have 15 computers in our office. We have 3 printers, some wifi and some network plugged. We have a standard router and the office share things via dropbox. The computers are not on Windows SBS or something similar. We want a cloud hosting solution that will offer User can login on any machine in the office and see the machine software User can login on any machine in the office and open Outlook and their emails and signature will be on exchange automatically A shared company folder on the network All printers automatically installed on the network Users can login remotely to access emails via the web At the moment we have a network company saying we need Xeon server in house with backup and psu and Windows SBS with license for each machine and also we need cabinets and cabling setup and also load balancers and modification of our DNS for emails. My question is this. Can cloud offer this? Can we have a server in the cloud that does this? Is it possible I mean the computers would be wireless connected to this cloud and you turn the machine on and its hosted?

• Amazon EC2 - Free memory

  We have an amazon ec2 small instance running and over the past few days we noticed that the memory is going down and down. On the small instance, we are running apache and tomcat6 Tomcat is started with the following JVM parameters -Xms32m -Xmx128m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m We use nagios to monitor stuff like updates to apply, free disk space and memory. Everything else is behaving as expected but our memory is going down all the time. Our app receives approx half a million hits a day When I shutdown apache and tomcat, and ran free -m, we had only 594mb of memory free out out of the 1.7gb of memory. Not much else is running on the small instance and when running the top command I cannot see where the memory is going. The app we run on tomcat is a grails webapp. Could there be a possibility that there is a memory leak within our application? I read online and folks say that a small amazon instance is perfect for running apach and tomcat. I found a few posts online that showed how to setup apache and tomcat to limit the memory usage and I have already performed those steps. The memory is not being used up as quick but the memory is still decreasing over time. We have other amazone ec2 small instances running grails apps and the memory is fairly standard on those nodes. But they would not be receiving as much traffic Just to add, when I run the top command on the problem server, I cannot see where all the memory is being used Any help with this is greatly appreciated The output of free -m when run on my server is as follows total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1657 1380 277 0 158 773 -/+ buffers/cache: 447 1209 Swap: 895 0 895 In your opinion, does this look ok? • Very high CPU and low RAM usage - is it possible to place some of swap some of the CPU usage to the RAM (with CloudLinux LVE Manager installed)?

  I had to install CloudLinux so that I could somewhat controle the CPU ussage and more importantly the Concurrent-Connections the Websites use. But as you can see the Server load is way to high and thats why some sites take up to 10 sec. to load! Server load 22.46 (8 CPUs) (!) Memory Used 36.32% (2,959,188 of 8,146,632) (ok) Swap Used 0.01% (132 of 2,104,504) (ok) Server: 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz Memory: 8143680k/9437184k available (2621k kernel code, 234872k reserved, 1403k data, 244k init) Linux Yesterday: Total of 214,514 Page-views (Awstat) Now my question: Can I shift some of the CPU usage to the RAM? • SSL certificates: how to use it?

  I have a central server and I want to purchase a SSL certificate for it. The architecture is based on this central server and many connected web-servers which are on the client-side (one for each user). A client could access both the main server and its local server. Moreover the two servers exchange data between them. I would like client's web browser to trust all servers and always activating https and a secure connection when connecting to them. Assuming I can name all servers on the same domain name (I was thinking about a wildcard certificate anyway), which kind of certificate or use of it can make these secure connections working? There is the possibility that main server and client side server are not connected for a while. Is possible to activate an https connection for a client to its local server in this case? When I will need to renew or change the certificate, I would like to change it just on the main server avoiding to have the need of touch all the servers on the side of clients. Can I do that in some way?

• java memory allocation under linux

  I'm running 4 java processes with the following command: java -Xmx256m -jar ... and the system has 8Gb memory under fedora 12. however it is apparently going into swap. how can that be if 4 x 256m = 1Gb ? EDIT: also, how can all 8Gb of memory be used with so little memory allocated to basically the only thing running? is it java not garbage collecting because the OS tells it it doesn't need to or what? • ASP.NET, IS7 and IE8 caching?

  We're suddenly having problems with some of our sites having old versions of .css and .js files show up in the browser. Generally, these problems go away, when the user clears cache in the browser. Is there something we can do either in the code or in IIS7, to convince the browser to not used the cached files? In our weirdest case, we have one customer whose users hit our site, and get an old version of a js file. They clear cache, load the page, get the current version, and the page runs fine. Then they load the file again, and suddenly have the old version, again. Any ideas as to how that might be happening? I can think of three: The browser is somehow holding on to the old version, when we clear cache, and is putting it back in the cache, before the second page load. One of our servers has an old version of the file, and while the first page load after a clear cache pulls it from one of the servers with the current version, second and subsequent page loads pull it from the server that has the old version. The first load after a clear cache goes straight to our servers, while subsequent loads pull the file from the cache on the customer's web proxy. I have to say, all three of those scenarios seem outlandishly unlikely, but it's a repeatable behavior. Any ideas?

• SSO to multiple websites from Sharepoint website

  We have an intranet based on Sharepoint 2010. In this intranet we have several links to other webservers within the same Active Directory, for example a link to our Outlook Web Access site on our Exchange 2010 environment. We have three different setups which visit this Sharepoint environment and the other webservers: Windows 7 clients that are a member of the Active Directory Home pc's that connect through a SSL VPN appliance Standalone thin clients (Windows 7 embedded) within the corporate network The goal is to let people only sign in once. In the first group this isn't a problem because the AD Integrated Authentication works fine and the Windows logon is passed on to Sharepoint and the other webservers. The second group is also working fine because of the LDAP integration that the SSL VPN appliance uses. The third group is however experiencing issues. They need to enter their credentials everytime they click a link to another webserver. They first need to enter credentials for accessing the Sharepoint environment. When clicking the link for their webmail they have to re-enter their credentials, and so on. Can someone tell me what the best solution would be to also get SSO working fine for the third group? Some extra information: We also have a Forefront TMG server in our environment. I read somewhere that Forefront might be part of a solution for this problem, but not sure how.   Hi all, The root cause of my problem is not known to me, whatever it is, I experience frequent DNS failures. When it happens I cannot browse to my Gmail inbox. I use two DNS settings. One is the public DNS server offered by OpenDNS, and the other is Google's free DNS server. When this happens I switch from the active setting to the other one and the problem goes away. But there is a side effect to this. When browsing to Gmail fails to load, after switching the DNS I receive an error saying the security certificate the site uses is only valid for OpenDNS. This my wild guess at what is going on: OpenDNS fails to resolve mail.google.com to its IP, My ISP sends me a page showing search results for 'mail.google.com' Since I have received some sort of page instead of a timeout, the browser, mistakenly, binds the certificate it has cached for 'mail.google.com' to the new domain. This search page is not served by https so not exception is thrown by the wrong binding After switching the DNS, the domain is correctly resolved to Gmail server's IP and since his is on https the handshake is triggered. Now, because of the wrong binding, which passed quietly as no handshake was involved, I receive the error saying the certificate used by 'mail.google.com' is only good for openDNS I don't know much about DNS, less about https and the process of establishing a secure connection. How correct is my explanation? How can I delete the wrong association and/or the certificate? Thanks for listening. P. S. • How to diagnose computer freezing problem

  I have a laptop (a Medion from Aldi) that tends to hang quite often - so often, in fact, that several attempts to install Windows XP or Ubuntu on it have all failed. However, I am able to boot and run Ubuntu as found on the standard Ubuntu 10.10 installation image. I have done this two times thus far. The first time everything was running smoothly, until at some point the GUI (i.e. X) became unresponsive. The cursor kept moving with the mouse, but menus would no longer show and clicking things no longer produced any response. So I switched to the consoles (Ctrl-F1, Ctrl-F2, etc., which in this setup automatically run shells. The shells were still responsive, and the cd command would still work, but any command that invoked an executable (e.g. /bin/ls or cd /bin; ./find caused the shell to hang up uninterruptibly. My hypothesis was that all attempts at disk access were hanging up, but I didn't actually try a command like echo /proc/$$ or while read line; do echo $line; done < /var/log/syslog to verify this. Another possibility is that an essential system library is cached in memory and somehow failing to function properly. The second time I left the system running overnight and it didn't hang itself spontaneously. I'm not sure I have the patience to just twiddle with the running system until the condition reappears, and I'm, not sure what to do once it does. Clearly we can rule out a software cause. It seems disk access related, but clearly it's not permanent hard disk failure because the system will reboot just fine. What kind of hardware problem might produce these symptoms? Can it be a memory problem?

  Hello, I am having some problems trying to work with PostgreSQL and Hibernate, more specifically, the issue mentioned in the title. I've been searching the net for a few hours now but none of the found solutions worked for me. I am using Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers. Build id: 20090920-1017 with HibernateTools, Hibernate 3, PostgreSQL 8.4.3 on Ubuntu 9.10. Everything is lowercase, so I don't think that it's that issue. If I switch to MySQL, the same code same project (I only change driver,URL, authentication), it works. In Eclipse Datasource Explorer, I can ping the DB and it succeeds. Weird thing is that I can't see the tables from there either. It expands the public schema but it doesn't expand the tables. Could it be some permission issue? Thanks!

• Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

  I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered. • Anyone have ideas for solving the "n items remaining" problem on Internet Explorer?

  In my ASP.Net app, which is javascript and jQuery heavy, but also uses master pages and .Net Ajax pieces, I am consistently seeing on the status bar of IE 6 (and occasionally IE 7) the message "2 items remaining" or "15 items remaining" followed by "loading somegraphicsfile.png|gif ." This message never goes away and may or may not prevent some page functionality from running (it certainly seems to bog down, but I'm not positive). I can cause this to happen 99% of the time by just refreshing an .aspx age, but the number of items and, sometimes, the file it mentions varies. Usually it is 2, 3, 12, 13, or 15. I've Googled for answers and there are several suggestions or explanations. Some of them haven't worked for us, and others aren't practical for us to implement or try. Here are some of the ideas/theories: IE isn't caching images right, so it repeatedly asks for the same image if the image is repeated on the page and the server assumes that it should be cached locally since it's already served it in that page context. IE displays the images correctly, but sits and waits for a server response that never comes. Typically the file it says it is waiting on is repeated on the page. The page is using PNG graphics with transparency. Indeed it is, but they are jQuery-UI Themeroller generated graphics which, according to the jQuery-UI folks, are IE safe. The jQuery-UI components are the only things using PNGs. All of our PNG references are in CSS, if that helps. I've changed some of the graphics from PNG to GIF, but it is just as likely to say it's waiting for somegraphicsfile.png as it is for somegraphicsfile.gif Images are being specified in CSS and/or JavaScript but are on things that aren't currently being displayed (display: none items for example). This may be true, but if it is, then I would think preloading images would work, but so far, adding a preloader doesn't do any good. IIS's caching policy is confusing the browser. If this is true, it is only Microsoft server SW having problems with Microsoft's browser (which doesn't surprise me at all). Unfortunately, I don't have much control over the IIS configuration that will be hosting the app. Has anyone seen this and found a way to combat it? Particularly on ASP.Net apps with jQuery and jQuery-UI? UPDATE One other data point: on at least one of the pages, just commenting out the jQuery-UI Datepicker component setup causes the problem to go away, but I don't think (or at least I'm not sure) if that fixes all of the pages. If it does "fix" them, I'll have to swap out plug-ins because that functionality needs to be there. There doesn't seem to be any open issues against jQuery-UI on IE6/7 currently... UPDATE 2 I checked the IIS settings and "enable content expiration" was not set on any of my folders. Unchecking that setting was a common suggestion for fixing this problem. I have another, simpler, page that I can consistently create the error on. I'm using the jQuery-UI 1.6rc6 file (although I've also tried jQuery-UI 1.7.1 with the same results). The problem only occurs when I refresh the page that contains the jQuery-UI Datepicker. If I comment out the Datepicker setup, the problem goes away. Here are a few things I notice when I do this: This page always says "(1 item remaining) Downloading picture http:///images/Calendar_scheduleHS.gif", but only when reloading. When I look at HTTP logging, I see that it requests that image from the server every time it is dynamically turned on, without regard to caching. All of the requests for that graphic are complete and return the graphic correctly. None are marked code 200 or 304 (indicating that the server is telling IE to use the cached version). Why it says waiting on that graphic when all of the requests have completed I have no idea. There is a single other graphic on the page (one of the UI PNG files) that has a code 304 (Not Modified). On another page where I managed to log HTTP traffic with "2 items remaining", two different graphic files (both UI PNGs) had a 304 as well (but neither was the one listed as "Downloading". This error is not innocuous - the page is not fully responsive. For example, if I click on one of the buttons which should execute a client-side action, the page refreshes. Going away from the page and coming back does not produce the error. I have moved the script and script references to the bottom of the content and this doesn't affect this problem. The script is still running in the $(document).ready() though (it's too hairy to divide out unless I absolutely have to). FINAL UPDATE AND ANSWER There were a lot of good answers and suggestions below, but none of them were exactly our problem. The closest one (and the one that led me to the solution) was the one about long running JavaScript, so I awarded the bounty there (I guess I could have answered it myself, but I'd rather reward info that leads to solutions). Here was our solution: We had multiple jQueryUI datepickers that were created on the $(document).ready event in script included from the ASP.Net master page. On this client page, a local script's $(document).ready event had script that destroyed the datepickers under certain conditions. We had to use "destroy" because the previous version of datepicker had a problem with "disable". When we upgraded to the latest version of jQuery UI (1.7.1) and replaced the "destroy"s with "disable"s for the datepickers, the problem went away (or mostly went away - if you do things too fast while the page is loading, it is still possible to get the "n items remaining" status). My theory as to what was happening goes like this: The page content loads and has 12 or so text boxes with the datepicker class. The master page script creates datepickers on those text boxes. IE queues up requests for each calendar graphic independently because IE doesn't know how to properly cache dynamic image requests. Before the requests get processed, the client area script destroys those datepickers so the graphics are no longer needed. IE is left with some number of orphaned requests that it doesn't know what to do with.

I use Ububtu server distro, WLS 9.2MP3 + ALSB. Everything works OK, quite fast, but at the start time the WLS stops twice for a measurable amounts of time. Two stops in total amount to about 10 minutes delay. For tasks where deployment requires server restart it's very annoying. :-( Sleeping time is not constant, sometimes the server starts very fast, sometimes so-so, sometimes 10 minutes or more. Interesting that if I press Enter while looking at the stopped server, it wakes up much faster, sometimes after a few seconds. WLST (Weblogic Jython shell) is also hanging for quite a time when executed in VM. It doesn't react to Enter though. Here must be some developers who run WLS with a VM. I wonder if others have the same problem? Was someone able to solve it?   I am getting the above error in IIS 6.0 now when I browse my C# / SQL web application. This was built in VS 2008 and SS 2008 on a 32-bit XP OS. The application was working before I added Login controls to it. However, this is my first time configuring Login/password controls so I am probably missing something really basic. The Network Service account has SELECT, EXECUTE, INSERT, UPDATE access to this database. • ORDER BY job failed in the Pig script while running EmbeddedPig using Java

  I have this following pig script, which works perfectly using grunt shell (stored the results to HDFS without any issues); however, the last job (ORDER BY) failed if I ran the same script using Java EmbeddedPig. If I replace the ORDER BY job by others, such as GROUP or FOREACH GENERATE, the whole script then succeeded in Java EmbeddedPig. So I think it's the ORDER BY which causes the issue. • MySQL Config File for Large System

  We are running MySQL on a Windows 2003 Server Enterpise Edition box. MySQL is about the only program running on the box. We have approx. 8 slaves replicated to it, but my understanding is that having multiple slaves connecting to the same master does not significantly slow down performance, if at all. The master server has 16G RAM, 10 Terabyte drives in RAID 10, and four dual-core processors. From what I have seen from other sites, we have a really robust machine as our master db server. We just upgraded from a machine with only 4G RAM, but with similar hard drives, RAID, etc. It also ran Apache on it, so it was our db server and our application server. It was getting a little slow, so we split the db server onto this new machine and kept the application server on the first machine. We also distributed the application load amongst a few of our other slave servers, which also run the application. The problem is the new db server has mysqld.exe consuming 95-100% of CPU almost all the time and is really causing the app to run slowly. I know we have several queries and table structures that could be better optimized, but since they worked okay on the older, smaller server, I assume that our my.ini (MySQL config) file is not properly configured. Most of what I see on the net is for setting config files on small machines, so can anyone help me get the my.ini file correct for a large dedicated machine like ours? I just don't see how mysqld could get so bogged down! FYI: We have about 100 queries per second. We only use MyISAM tables, so skip-innodb is set in the ini file. And yes, I know it is reading the ini file correctly because I can change some settings (like the server-id and it will kill the server at startup). • Are there alternatives to Sysinternals ADInsight?

  I had been using ADInsight from Sysinternals to trace Active Directory calls from my workstation, but the application has failed. Where previously the Active Directory events were traced and logged, now the window remains blank, whether the application is in capture mode or not. I have run as Administrator, rebooted, downloaded a new version; none of those actions has returned the program to a functional state. The Sysinternals forums don't offer much hope, since this tool is known to fail often. Is there tool that has similar functionality? • Install server 2012 on HP ML110 G7 with B110i controller, no disks found

  I'm trying to install Server 2012 on a HP ML110 G7 with a B110i controller and four non hot-swappable SATA drives. I just can't get the Server 2012 boot disk PE environment to find any disks. I have downloaded the latest SPP (Service Pack for Proliant 2012.10) and flashed the BIOS. I have tried two different HP drivers for B110i and Windows X64, 6.18.0.64 and 6.18.2.64 to no avail. I have tried setting the controller to both AHCI and legacy mode in the BIOS, no difference. HP:s SmartStart disc for G7 servers only support installation of up to Windows Server 2008R2. HP:s installation instructions for Server 2012 Essentials says boot from the windows disk and use the storage drivers found on the SPP (I can't find any storage drivers on the SPP disk).
