• Running a Ruby interpreter on iPad

  I'll be taking a trip soon with my iPad, without my laptop. I'd like to continue to tinker with Ruby while I'm on the road. I have an iPhone developer program membership, and I'm not interested in submitting this stuff to the app store. I found the shinycocos project, which appears to embed a Ruby interpreter in an app. But I can't get it to run, and it seems pretty customized for running cocos2d stuff. My first goal is to run an interactive command line like Try Ruby!. After that, I'd like to enter small programs in a UITextView and run them. I'd appreciate any clues, tips, or existing projects you might know of.

• Delegates doesnot work properly

• Quick and dirty way to store NSStrings (or other data) from launch to launch?

  I want to allow my user to store custom phrases, to be displayed in an editable UITableView. What's a quick and dirty to store these strings? I'm fairly new at iPhone development. I know about Core Data, but not how to use it. i would stay away form that just for this particular project if possible. Are PLIST files a possibility here? Sample code is appreciated. Thank you.

• How to set UITableView to Grouped?

  In an iPhone navigation based app, I want to add a second tableview but have its design available in IB. I've added a new empty XIB and dragged a UITableView onto it. I want to setup the layout through IB. I've created a controller for this tableview and set the File's Owner class in IB to this controller. I linked the tableview to File's Owner as well. I set the tableview to grouped in IB. However, that does not translate at runtime. I still have a plain tableview. In fact, none of the Inspector settings work at runtime. What have I missed?

• Analyzing CPU usage of an iOS application

  I'm working on an application that constructs springboard like interface (like iPhone's home screen). I have multiple pages, and each page contains many subviews. Each subview is able to detect touch and hold event. Once a touch and hold event is recognized, all the subviews start to wobble. One of the problems that i'm facing is that the CPU usage shoots to 99%, when the subviews are in wobble state, and i change the page. Instruments has a tool by the name of "CPU Sampler". I'm unable to find good set of documentation for this tool. I don't know how to read the output generated by this tool. Can anyone give me a small tutorial or guidelines? Can i check which piece of code is responsible for the CPU activity?

• Universal App won't build for device

  I'm trying to get an iPad/iPhone app to run on my iPad. (it builds and runs fine on the simulator) I went through the menu to create a new universal project. Then I added another library that my app will use (route-me), and i keep getting the following linker errors: "___restore_vfp_d8_d15_regs", referenced from: and "___save_vfp_d8_d15_regs", referenced from: I did a search on Google, and found (http://www.badrit.com/blog/2010/6/6/building-route-me-for-ipad) that it's just a matter of matching up project settings in the library projects. I did that but it didn't help. I still keep getting these linker errors. Anyone have any ideas what I can try?

• Any way to ask a method for its name?

  I'm trying to debug an iPhone app I'm working on, and the idea of adding fifty NSLog statements to the various source files gives me the willies. What I'd like to do is write a pair of statements, say NSString *methodName = [self methodName]; NSLog(@"%@", methodName); that I can just paste into each method I need to. Is there a way to do this? Is there some Objective-C construct for asking a method for its name? Or am I gonna have to do this the hard way?

I want the map(using MapKit) to only load and display after I click a button. So, what code should I have under that my "(IBAction) showMap" function? Whatever I could find online talks about unhiding the map. • Why does UIActionSheet cancel crahes my App?

  I try to use the UIActionSheet within my iPhone App but have the following problem. When I tap the cancel button "I don't", the app crashes. When I remove the NSLog statement from the actionSheet:clickedButtonAtIndex: it does not. The "Yes, do it" button works just fine and I see the log statement in the console. • Non US characters in section headers for a UITableView

  I have added a section list for a simple Core Data iPhone app. I followed this so question to create it - How to use the first character as a section name but my list also contain items starting with characters outside A-Z, specially Å,Ä and Ö used here in Sweden. The problem now is that when the table view shows the section list the three last characters are drawn wrong. See image below It seems like my best option right now is to let those items be sorted under 'Z' if ([letter isEqual:@"Å"] || [letter isEqual:@"Ä"] || [letter isEqual:@"Ö"]) letter = @"Z"; Someone that have figured this one out? And while I'm at it... 'Å', 'Ä' and 'Ö' should be sorted in that order but are sorted as 'Ä', 'Å' and 'Ö' by Core Data NSSortDescriptor. I have tried to set set the selector to localizedCaseInsensitiveCompare: but that gives a out of order section name 'Ä. Objects must be sorted by section name' error. Seen that too?

• How to create an iPad directory view like animation?

  In the recent iOS 4.2 update, Apple introduced a nice animation for creating one level directories. I am trying to figure out how to implement a similar animation in my project. I would deeply appreciate it if anyone could give me any pointers to do this efficiently. From my investigation, I believe this animation or effect could be done very efficiently using Core Image which would allow me to write a custom filter. Unfortunately, Core Image is not available in iPhone. So how can do it? I read a blog post that explained a core animation scheme to create an iPad flip clock. The problem I have is similar but has important differences. Besides, I not excited about saving the subimage combinations, which I believe can cause a memory issue. Please enlighten me on the possible ways of doing this animation. I am relatively new to iOS programming, so I might have missed obvious ways of doing this animation or effect.

• XCode - Multiple targets, Multiple *internationalized* names?

  I've got an internationalized iPhone project. In the various ${lang}.lproj/InfoPlist.strings files I've got a single key, CFBundleName = "My App Name". That's working fine for a single target, but I can't make it work for multiple targets. I'd like to have several translated InfoPlistMyApp.strings files for the main target, plus several InfoPlistMyApp*Lite*.strings files for the lite version. But I can't figure out how to set it up. The InfoPlist.strings name seems to be set in stone, so I can't replace it dynamically. Any ideas?

• Core Data NSFetchedResultsController sorting in certain sequence

  I'm writing iphone app that has UITableView and uses Core Data. Data in UITableView is shown using NSFetchedResultsController. I use NSPredicate operator "IN" to fetch only needed entries. NSArray *filterArray = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"789", @"963", @"445", @"198", nil]; NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"id IN %@", filterArray]; Now the problem is that I need to show entries in same sequence they are in filterArray. How can I do it? How I can create NSSortDescriptor that would sort all entries in that way? I tried without sort descriptor, but I get error that NSFetchedResultsController needs sortDescriptor to be set.

• How to I reference a pointer from a different class

  Hey team of awesomeness!, (Iphone Objective-C question) First off, I despise singletons with a passion. Though I should probably be trying to use one, I just dont want to. I want to create a data class (that is instantiated only once by a view controller on loading), and then using a different class, message the crap out of that data instance until it is brimming with so much data, it smiles. So, how do i do that? I made a pointer to the instance of the data class when I instantiated it. I'm now over in a separate view controller, action occurs, and I want to update the initial data object. I think I need to reference that object by way of pointer, but I have no idea how to do that. yes I've set properties and getters and setters, which seem to work, but only in the initial view controller class. • Should I use interface builder or not?

  I'd like to know more about the pros and cons of using interface builder when developing iPhone/iPad apps. I've written a fairly complex and customized app that's on the app store right now, but all of the interfaces are hand coded as they are fairly complex. I've customised the navigation and tab bars with backgrounds, table view cells are manually drawn for speed, and some views are complex and scalable with many subviews. I'm pondering whether or not to start using interface builder but I'm not sure to what extent I'll use it and whether it's worth it at all. Is it quicker? Can things still be easily customised? Any advice would be most welcome!

Of course I cannot (should not) charge anything on top of the code. Still, I want to get compensation for my work on UI design, graphics and integration work.   Hello, when I have the fallowing code to read a binary file: NSString* file = [NSString stringWithUTF8String:fileName]; NSString* filePath = resource ? [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:file ofType:nil] : [[NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES) objectAtIndex:0] stringByAppendingPathComponent: file]; NSData* fileData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfFile:filePath]; Where "fileName" and resource are load function parameters. "resource" is used to know if the file is located in application bundle or in Documents. Sometimes this code works well and sometimes it doesn't. As far I saw this problem is random. I can run the code 10 times in a row and it works fine and after that it gives me nil data without any modification. Does anybody knows what could be the problem? Could it be related with file extension or file name? Thank you. PS: I use this code on iPhone Simulator and the file exists in application bundle.

I've heard that since version 1.0 it isn't dependant on webkit anymore and it makes app-development more exiting of course, please correct me if i'm wrong. As many people out there i love Javascript Frameworks such as JQuery and Mootools much, but they were build specifically to do a great job within a browser and most of the functionality is not needed within the environment Titanium now provides (DOM-Manipulation etc). • How can I tell xCode to recheck project resources that have been modified?

  I'm working with a designer friend on an iPhone app and he likes to refine all sorts of images relating to the project we're working on. All these images have been added to the project previously (and added to the project folder by xcode) and then are modified in their new location. When I preview the images in xCode, the updated images show up but building and running in the simulator or on a device doesn't pick up the new image. In fact, if I do a clean build it seems to ignore the image all together and blank spaces appear where images should be. Now, I can delete these files from the project and re-add them and everything works peachy again. But there are a lot of them and I'd rather not do that every time an image is updated. Is there a way to get xCode to review and "learn" about these modified images? Is there a good reason for why it's not doing that automatically?
