• How do I create a sqlite 3 (.sl3) database file?

  I have a *.sqlite file... but I need the database in *.sl3 format? What software/tool can I us to create that? What are the steps? This is to be used in an iPhone app. Original developer used an .sl3 file, now that I have updated the DB - I can't seem to export/generate a .sl3 file I have tried just changing the extension - all the way to inserting the *.sqlite file in XCode and pointing the app delegates to the new DB file format... doesn't work.   I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas? I downloaded openCv static libraries for arm(iPhones native instruction architecture) and the libraries were generated just fine. There were no problems linking to them libraries. As a first step, i was trying to create a .avi file using one image, to see if it works. But cvCreateVideoWriter always returns me a NULL value. I did some searchin and i believe its due to the codec not being present. I am trying this on the iPhone simulator. this is what i do... • Do I need social networks to be an expert developer? [closed]

  This question may sound odd, but do I need twitter, facebook and google+ if I am a web-developer? I see many expert developers nowadays using it in working order. It seems like it's harder to stay in touch with customers, co-workers and potential customers if you don' use social networks. Am I right? Reason why I ask is that I am totally not a facebook/twitter person, I find it boring and annoying. I understand that linkedin is usefull for career, but what about twitter and facebook? Are they needed for web-developer career? What I am trying to ask is if I only use linkedin, own portfolio website, google talks, gmail and something like github, would I actually miss anything professionally/job-wise? My thoughts are that I can just have my portfolio website where I list all my projects aswell as contacts page with my google talks/gmail account. It can suit both fulltime job, freelance and own projects. So this way email and google talks is just enough. Am I right or not? Thanks in advance!

I graduated in 2006 with a computer science degree and got solid grades (3.5 overall 3.8 in my major) For the past 4.5 years I've been working as a Software Engineer doing primarily rich client development. Most of my experience is with Java, Swing and C++. I've done a lot of network programming and I have acquired some skill working & debugging in distributed environments. I would like to switch jobs and move into a role where I can get exposure to some new technologies and frameworks. I would like to move into a more web development role but I find my lack of web development experience is hurting me. 90% of the jobs I see advertised are looking for one of two skill sets: 1) Stereotypical server side Java web developer. Experience with Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, etc. 2) Stereotypical front end web developer. Experience with Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, GWT, CSS, etc I find most of these companies are looking really specifically for this experience and they are not willing to take on good programmers/ CS fundamental guys who lack experience with this stuff. I would love to get a job doing stuff like this, but have my skills become out of date and unmarketable? Any opinions on ways to sell myself to help get a new position?

  I run a small webdesign firm. I have an overview of HTML, CSS, JS, PHP(laravel), MySQL. I did a few courses on code academy. I wanted to build a web app in the company. I find that I am severely crippled by the lack of programming expertise. I want to become a full stack developer who can build a prototype on his own. I cannot spend 5-10k USD on the boot camp courses. Can someone suggest structured courses which can help me become a full stack developers? I found the following websites but I donot know if they can help me become one. My goal: Be able to make a working prototype of the ideas I come up with.(This is my primary goal. I do not want to be the lead developer. I just want to be able to make a prototype.) Several questions I have in mind: Will it be fine if I stick to PHP(laravel)? Should I be using ROR? I have come across a few online resources: Codeacademy, codeschool,teamtreehouse,and theodinproject. These are within my affordability range. I can commit to a 2-3 months intensively to learn programming. What do you suggest I do?

  EDIT: The memory leaks turned out to be unrelated to the crashes. Leaks are fixed but crashes remain, still mysterious. My (iPhone) app does lots of PDF loading and rendering, some of it threaded. Sometime, it seems always after I flush a page cash after getting a memory warning, the app crashes with a bad access when trying to draw a pdf page stored in an NSData object.   I'm diving into iPhone OS development on the iPad and one of the things I'm playing with is the SplitView template. The template provides a window with a UISplitView view, containing the Root View (on the left of the window) and the Detail View (on the right of the window). The Root View is a subclass of a TableView. Rather than having the entire Root View consist of a TableView, I'd like it to contain a DatePicker view along with the TableView under it. When I go into IB and try and drop a DatePicker into the Root View, it won't let me. It will only let me add a DatePicker view to the Detail View. Why wont IB let me drop a DatePicker view into the Root View? How can I add a DatePicker to the RootView in addition to the TableView? I'm still learning this new platform, so I apologize if these questions are absurd in any way. Thanks so much in advance for your help, I'm going to continue researching these questions right now.

• Xcode: Unable to open project... cannot be opened because the project file cannot be parsed...

  Hi everyone. I have been working for a while to create an iPhone app. Today when my battery was low, I was working and constantly saving my source files then the power went out... Now when I plugged my computer back in and it is getting good power I try to open my project file and I get an error: "Unable to Open Project Project ... cannot be opened because the project file cannot be parsed." Is there a way that people know of that I can recover from this? I tried using an older project file and re inserting it and then compiling. It gives me a funky error which is probably because it isn't finding all the files it wants... I really don't want to rebuild my project from scratch if possible. Thanks in advance. EDIT Ok, I did a diff between this and a slightly older project file that worked and saw that there was some corruption in the file. After merging them (the good and newest parts) it is now working. Great points about the SVN. I have one, but there has been some funkiness trying to sync XCode with it. I'll definitely spend more time with it now... ;-) Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions.

• Convert NSMutableArray to string and back

  Hello, in my current project I'm facing the following problem: The app needs to exchange data with my server, which are stored inside a NSMutableArray on the iPhone. The array holds NSString, NSData and CGPoint values. Now, I thought the easiest way to achieve this, was to convert the array into a properly formatted string, send it to my server and store it inside some mySQL database. At this point I'd like to request my data from my server, receive the string, which represents contents of my array and then actually convert it back into a NSMutablArray. So far, I tried something like this: NSString *myArrayString = [myArray description]; Now I send this string to my server and store it inside my mySQL database. That part works really well. However, when I receive the string from my server, I have trouble converting it back into a NSMutableArray. Is there a method, which can easily convert array description back into an array? Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on that so far. Maybe my way of "serializing" the array is wrong right from the start and there is a smarter way to do this. Any help appreciated. • How does [self.tableView reloadData] know what data to reload?

  It bugs me to death that my viewcontroller, which happens to be a tableViewController, knows without being told that its property that is an NSArray or an NSDictionary holds the data that is to be loaded into the table for display. Seems like I should explicitly say something like: [self.tableView useData:self.MyArray]; Because, THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO DO! I want to have more than one array inside my tableViewController, and switch between one and the other programmatically. Please do not give me an answer like: "Never mind what you want to do, just set up two different tableViewControllers." No. I want to do it my way. I notice that when a tableViewController makes use of a searchViewController, you can do this: if (tableView == self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView) { YES! I have even been able to do this: self.tableView = self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView; [self.tableView reloadData]; But nowhere can I find how to set self.tableView back to the main datasource! I'm so tired of sifting, sifting through code for incomplete nuggets of enlightenment. Allow me to understate that Apple's documentation is grossly inadequate. It's astounding that so many slick iPhone programs came to be created. People said that once I went Mac, I'd never go back to Windows. Well, I'm anything but a convert.

  To reduce the download size of an iPhone application I'm compressing some audio files. Specifically I'm using afconvert on the command line to change .wav format to .caf format w/ ima4 compression. I've read this (wooji-juice.com) awesome post about this exact topic. I'm having trouble w/ the "decoding ima4 packets" step. I've looked at their sample code and I'm stuck. Please help w/ some pseudo code or sample code that can guide me in the right direction. Thanks! Additional info: Here is what I've completed and where I'm having trouble... I can play .wav files in both the simulator and on the phone. I can compress .wav files to .caf w/ ima4 compression using afconvert on the command line. I'm using the SoundEngine that came w/ CrashLanding (I fixed one memory leak). I modified the SoundEngine code to look for the mFormatID 'ima4'. I don't understand the blog post linked above starting w/ "Calculating the size of the unpacked data". Why do I need to do this? Also, what does the term "packet" refer to? I'm very new to any sort of audio programming.

• jerky animation using Core Animation

  In my iPhone app, I am trying to get some red and white stripes that are scrolling across the screen to animate smoothly when the speed of the stripes gets high. In my app the user starts the animation and changes the scrolling speed by a finger swipe and changes the width of the stripes by a two finger pinch. Animation is stopped in response to a double tap. If the speed gets high or the stripes get narrow the animation is no longer smooth to the eye. The edges of the stripes seem to jump around. The animation is simple. I draw the stripes in a layer that's a bit larger than the screen. I then set up an animation that moves the layer position by exactly the distance from one red stripe to the next. The duration is set by the speed of the finger swipe and the repeat count is 1. When the animation stops the delegate checks a flag to see if the user wants to stop the scrolling. If not, the animation is restarted again for one cycle. Are there better ways of doing this so that the animation is smooth at high speeds or with narrow stripes? Thanks--
