• Cocoa : Remove Item from NSArrayController

  I have a NSArrayController bound to a NSTableView. With this I have the typical Add/Remove buttons. While Adding an item is very straight forward (I call a method, create an object with default values and add it) I have problems deleting objects from the controller. I know I can do this the easy way when connecting the button with the remove action from the ArrayController. But this is not what I want. I need to remove the object manually because I have some additional code to process. Anway, removing objects seems far more complcated then I expected. It already tried: NSArray *items = [doToItemsArrayController selectedObjects]; [doToItemsArrayController removeSelectedObjects:items]; or NSIndexSet *iSet = [doToItemsArrayController selectionIndexes]; [doToItemsArrayController removeSelectionIndexes:iSet]; None of them seems to work. How do I remove the selected Object from an NSArrayController with Objective-C code?

• [C#] How to consume web service adheres to the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern?

  I am following the example from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8wy069k1.aspx to consume a web service implemented (by 3rd party) using the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern. However, my program needs to do multiple calls to the DoStuffAsync() hence will get back as many DoStuffCompleted. I chose the overload which takes an extra parameter - Object userState to distinguish them. My first question is: Is it valid to cast a GUID to Object as below, where GUID is used to generate unique taskID? Object userState = Guid.NewGuid(); Secondly, do I need to spawn off a new thread for each DoStuffAsync() call, since I am calling it multiple times? Also, would be nice to have some online examples or tutorials on this subject. (I've been googling for it the whole day and didn't get much back) Many thanks

• Keep a reference to an NSThread around and message its objects?

  Hi I am a bit uncertain on how to do this: I start a "worker-thread" that runs for the duration of my apps "life". [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(updateModel) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; then - (void) updateModel { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; BackgroundUpdate *update = [[BackgroundUpdate alloc] initWithTimerInterval:5]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] run]; //keeps it going 'forever' [update release]; [pool release]; } Now the thread "wakes" up every 5 seconds(initWithTimerInterval) to see if there are any tasks it can do. All the tasks in the BackGroundUpdate Class are only time dependent for now. I would like to have a few that were "event dependent". e.g. I would like to call the Background Object from my main thread and tell it to "speedUp", "slowDown", "reset" or any method on the object. To do this I guess I need something like performSelectorOnThread but how to get a reference to the NSthread and the Background Object?

• Typed DefaultListModel to avoid casting

  Is there a way in java to have a ListModel that only accepts a certain type? What I'm looking for is something like DefaultListModel<String> oder TypedListModel<String>, because the DefaultListModel only implements addElement(Object obj) and get(int index) which returns Object of course. That way I always have to cast from Object to e.g. String and there is no guarantee that there are only strings in my model, even though I'd like to enforce that. Is this a flaw or am I using list models the wrong way?

It's ok to accept. So addListener will hold a function body containing 'apply'. But what I don't understand, when addListener is called, what kind of parameters it is going to have? particularly _method and args will always be uninitialized?

• What would you suggest as a high school first language?

  Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it.   Hello, I am creating an application using ASP.NET MVC (2) and Spring.NET. Since most of my Controller implementations just implement the similar CRUD operations, I would like to just create a single Generic controller, as explained here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/848904/in-asp-net-mvc-is-it-possible-to-make-a-generic-controller However, the above example doesn't take DI frameworks into consideration.   I want to pass constant references to functions in delphi, so I am sure that the referenced object won't change and to save time and memory. So I want to declare a function like function foo(var const Value : Bar) : Boolean; however this is not allowed. I thought constant values would be automatically sent as references. However I found out that it is not the case (getting the address of an object before sending it to the function gives me $12F50C and the address of the same object inside the function is $12F564) What can I do to send constant references?

My naive beginner's approach would be something like this: From my smartphone app, use a framework encoding my data object into a json object Send this object via http to a listener addressed by a dedicated URL On the server side, use a JSON parser and store it via ORM etc. into a database Questions: Is this too naive? 2a. • Why do people still use C these days? [closed]

  C++ is clearly a far superior language than C, since it has many features that C lacks (although, C++'s object model isn't as ideal as say C#'s). With the coming off the new C++0x standard, why hasn't C been phased out to obscurity? C++ has been around for so long, since the '80s. The Linux kernel has already been ported to C++ with negligible performance differences. I believe, with no evidence, that larger program structures benefit in performance if written in C++ than in C, if only because of object interaction. Don't get me started on "objects-in-C!" libraries, which are all a terrible hack. (Not that C++'s object model is the most ideal, but it is almost up to snuff with C# using common ad-hoc techniques.)

• Obtaining reference to Class instance by string name - VB.NET

  Is it possible using Reflection or some other method to obtain a reference to a specific class instance from the name of that class instance? For example the framework for the applications i develop heavily uses public class instances such as: Public bMyreference as MyReference = new MyReference Then throughout the application bMyReference is used by custom controls and code. One of the properties of the custom controls is the "FieldName" which references a Property in these class instances (bMyReference.MyField) as a string. What i would like to be able to do is analyze this string "bMyReference.MyField" and then refer back to the actual Instance/Property. In VB6 I would use an EVAL or something simular to convert the string to an actual object but this obviously doesn't work in VB.net What I'm picturing is something like this Dim FieldName as String = MyControl.FieldName ' sets FielName to bMyReference.MyField Dim FieldObject() as String = FieldName.Split(".") ' Split into the Object / Property Dim myInstance as Object = ......... ' Obtain a reference to the Instance and set as myInstance Dim myProperty = myInstance.GetType().GetProperty(FieldObject(1))

• Testing a (big) collection retrieved from a db

  I'm currently doing integration testing on a live database and I have the following sql statement: var date = DateTime.Parse("01-01-2010 20:30:00"); var result = datacontext.Repository<IObject>().Where(r => r.DateTime > date).First(); Assert.IsFalse(result.Finished); I need to test if the results retrieved from the statement, where the given date is less then the date of the object, have Finished set to False. I do not know how many results I get back and currently I'm getting the first object of the list and check if that object has Finished set to false. I know testing only the first item of the list is not valid testing, as a solution for that I could iterate through the list and check all items on Finished, but putting logic in a Test is kinda going against the concept of writing 'good' tests. So my question is: Does anyone have a good solution of how to properly test the results of this list?

• How does formatting works with a PowerShell function that returns a set of elements?

But even if only 8 columns are shown, there are plenty of other properties (as foo | gm is showing). What is causing this function to show only this 8 properties? I'm actually trying to build a similar function that is returning complex objects from a 3rd party .Net library. The library is flatting a 2 level hierarchy of objects : function Actual { $someDotnetObject.ACollectionProperty.ASecondLevelCollection | % { $_ } } This method is dumping the objects in a list form (one line per property). How can I control what is displayed, keeping the actual object available? I know I can change the value of i by using *iPtr, but how can I change the value of the object being pointed to by jPtr? How will changing the object being pointed to by jPtr affect the value of the object pointed to by iPtr, and i ?

• DDD: Trying to code sorting and filtering as it pertains to Poco, Repository, DTO, and DAO using C#?

  I get a list of items from my Repository. Now I need to sort and filter them, which I believe would be done in the Repository for efficiency. I think there would be two ways of doing this in a DDD way: Send a filter and a sort object full of conditions to the Repository (What is this called)? Repository result would produce an object with .filter and .sort methods? (This wouldn't be a POJO/POCO because it contains more than one object?). So is the answer 1, 2, or other? Could you explain why? I am leaning toward #1 because the Repository would be able to only send the data I want (or will #2 be able to delay accessing data like a LazyList?) A code example (or website link) would be very helpful.
