• Vboxheadless without a command prompt (VirtualBox)

  I'm trying to run VirtualBox VM's in the background from a service. I'm having trouble starting a process the way I desire. I'd like to start the virtualbox guest in headless mode as a separate process and show nothing as far as GUI. Here's what I've tried: From command line: start vboxheadless -s "Ubuntu Server" In C#: ProcessStartInfo info = new ProcessStartInfo { UseShellExecute = false, RedirectStandardOutput = true, ErrorDialog = false, WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden, CreateNoWindow = true, FileName = "C:/program files/sun/virtualbox/vboxheadless", Arguments = "-s \"Ubuntu Server\"" }; Process p = new Process(); p.StartInfo = info; p.Start(); String output = p.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd(); //BLOCKS! (output stream isnt closed) I want to be able to get the output to know if starting the server was a success. However, it seems as though the window that's spawned never closes its output stream. It's also worth mentioning that I've tried using vboxmanage startvm "Ubuntu Server" --type=vrdp. I can determine whether the server started properly using this. But it shows a new command prompt window for the newly started VirtualBox guest.

• Gluster bricks are offline and errors in logs

  I have substituted all the IP addresses with hostnames and renamed configs (IP to hostname) in /var/lib/glusterd by my shell script. After that I restarted Gluster Daemon and the volume. • Using AddEncoding x-gzip .gz without actual files

  With Apache (2.2 and later) how can I achieve the following. I want to transparently compress using GZip encoding (not plain Deflate) the output when a certain file is queried with its name plus the extension .gz, where the .gz version doesn't physically exist on disk. So let's say I have a file named /path/foo.bar and no file foo.bar.gz in the folder to which the URI /path maps, how can I get Apache to serve the contents of /path/foo.bar but with AddEncoding x-gzip ... applied to the (non-existing) file? The rewrite part appears to be easy, but the problem is how to apply the encoding to a non-existent item. The other way around also seems to be simple as long as the client supports the encoding. Is the only solution really a script that does this on the fly? I'm aware of mod_deflate and mod_gzip and it is not what I'm looking for - at least not alone. In particular I need an actual GZIP file and not just a deflated stream. Now I was thinking of using mod_ext_filter, but couldn't bridge the gap between rewriting the name of the (non-existent) file.gz to file on one side and the LocationMatch on the other. Here's what I have. • Why are FMS logs filled with 'play' event status code 408 for a failed webcast?

  Recently we had a live webcast event go horribly wrong. I'm doing the technical post-mortem, with limited information. We know that the hardware encoder (a Digital Rapid Touch Stream Web HDI) was unable to send upstream at a sustained reliable high rate. What we don't know is if the encoder's connection was problematic (Zürich), or that of the streaming server (in Frankfurt). Unfortunately, I've got three different vendors all blaming each other (the CDN who runs the server, the on-site ISP and the on-site encoding team.) In the FMS log files I see a couple of interesting things: Zillions of Status Code 408 on play event entries for clients. Adobe's documentation stats that this "Stream stopped because client disconnected". ("Zillions" would be a ratio of 10 events for every individual IP address.) Several unpublish / (re)publish events per hour for the encoder I'd like to know if all those 408s could tell me with authority that the FMS server was starved for bandwidth, or that the encoding signal was starved (and hence the server was disconnecting clients.) Any clues?

  I'm hoping to get a little assistance with configuring PEAR to work properly. I have a PHP file that's calling PEAR's mail and mail-mime files, and I believe I am missing some steps because I keep getting the very common Warning: include_once(Mail.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory Warning: include_once(Mail_Mime/mime.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory It is installed - Installed packages, channel pear.php.net: ========================================= Package Version State Archive_Tar 1.3.7 stable Console_Getopt 1.2.3 stable Mail 1.2.0 stable Mail_Mime 1.8.3 stable PEAR 1.9.4 stable Structures_Graph 1.0.4 stable XML_RPC 1.5.4 stable XML_Util 1.2.1 stable And according to this TUT, I need to configure it appropriately in each vhost. I have already gone through and adjusted the php.ini file, but when the TUT speaks of the php_admin_value open_basedir "/var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs:/tmp:/usr/share/pear:/local/PEAR" in my /var/www/vhosts/example.com/conf/httpd.include file I kind of get lost. There are several httpd.include files in that directory, all preceded with very long numerical strings. All I want to do is have an email attachment in my form.... Any insight or similar experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.

  I have wordpress installed in my server configured(hopefully with nginx+php-fpm+mariaDB). I am trying to import using wordpress importer a 1.5MB xml file. Everytime I try to upload it using the importer, it got cut of... meaning just blank screen result.. • Mandatory profile on Terminal server fails to load. Userenv.log debug

  Hi, We're having a lot of corrupted profiles lately on our profile share. At the moment I have no clue why, but I decided to switch to one mandatory profile since the users can all use the same and there is no need to have seperate profiles for each user. Here's what I did. I logged into the Terminal server with a new user and configured some stuff (imported certificates and a few files). Then I logged out. Later as admin I copied the profile to another server and renamed it to bsilo. I made sure the user hive settings were adjusted. Everyone had access to the hive. I shared the bsilo folder with full access for everyone. I set the NTFS permissions to read, read & execute, list folder contents for domain users. I also renamed NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. Now I set a env variable %manprofile% on the Terminal server that points to \server\bsilo\ntuser.man I set the env var as terminal services profile path for a test user. When I log in I as the user get the following output The system cannot find the path specified. Can somebody point me in the right direction.   I recently followed a guide and recompiled my ffmpeg so x264 is enabled. I used some generic settings to convert my 700 MB avi file to a mp4 file, the result was a 407MB mp4 file. The original avi file's settings: Codec: DX50 Resolution: 704x304 Frame rate: 23.976023 Stream 1 Codec: mpga Type: Audio Channels: 2 Sample rate: 48000 Hz Bitrate 179 kb/s Command I used: ffmpeg -i input.avi -acodec libfaac -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libx264 -vpre hq -crf 22 -threads 0 output.mp4 The settings of the output file (output.mp4): Codec: avc1 Resolution: 704x304 Display resolution: 704x304 Frame rate: 11.988011 Stream 1 Codec: mp4a Type: Audio Channels: 2 Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Bits per sample: 16 Bitrate: 1536 kb/s The quality of the output mp4 is pretty nice, it seems as if it's pretty much the same as the original source. However, I'm trying to reduce the filesize and I'm not really sure whether I should go with an flv format or keep it mp4. The advantage the flv would have obviously is that it would be playable with a flash player ( I have come across some swf players which take a flash parameter to play an flv file ).. but maybe I could use the video element, as I'm only going to be displaying this video privately so I don't have to worry about supporting legacy browsers such as IE. Can someone recommend some settings to specify in order for the filesize to be around ~100-150MB or so? I don't mind a reduction in quality, nor do I mind resizing it - I was going to do it initially but I wasn't sure what the guidelines were ( if any ) for dealing with resolution.. since this video's is 704x304 would it still be ok if I forced it into one that isn't perfectly fit for the aspect ratio? I have no clue about that part. I realize that I could have probably specified 28 instead of 22 for the CRF, I'm not sure if I should do that as opposed to maybe specifying smaller resolution, which might make it smaller as well?

• Is it possible to have DisplayLink USB display hotplugging with Xorg 1.13 on kernel 3.4?

  keithp seems to be the only one on the interwebs to have written anything about the subject and he worked with 3.5_rc. I don't want to go above 3.4 at the moment for various stability reasons and am trying to see whether I can get this to work. Xorg 1.13 recognizes the display on connection, "udl" module is loaded, xorg-video-modesetting driver also loads, display lights up. So everything seems to be good.   mplayer (from mplayerhq.hu) on windows repeats the last few audio frames upon exit. When the video ends, before you can see Exiting... • Netflix streaming stops loading at 98% on Revo 3700

  I'm trying to stream Netflix on an Acer Revo 3700 running Windows 7 Home Premium, but it hangs on the loading screen at 98% (after it has formatted the player to the right aspect ratio and added the controls, but before the video starts) with no error messages or failures. I have two other machines on the same network, one running Windows 7 Home Premium and another running XP, which both stream faultlessly. Things I have tried: Both a wired and wireless connection to the router Upgrading the video and audio drivers IE, Chrome and Firefox Boxee software Connecting with a VGA cable instead of HDMI (in case it is a HDCP thing) Uninstalling and reinstalling Silverlight. Getting someway into loading a HD movie and turning "Allow HD" off Does anyone know what Netflix is doing at the 98% load mark? Are there any log files? Anything else worth trying? Full disclosure: I'm using Netflix from the UK through a US based VPN. I've tried multiple VPNs and the problem is exactly the same, also the other machines on the same network through the same VPN work fine so I don't think this is the issue, but it might be a factor. The region check happens at around 7% and I get past that.

• How to create a static IP on Windows Server 2008 R2 so I can access the server remotely

  I have just purchased a HP Proliant N40L which I am intending to use as a NAS, learning tool and just in general something to mess around with. As a student via the Microsoft dreamspark program I can get a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 which I am using as the OS. So that I can remote to the box from outside of my local network and so that I can stream media from it to my PS3, I have read that I need to create a static IP for the server and use port forwarding to forward to this IP so I can remote in. Is this correct? I am not really sure how to do this and if I need to make these changes on my router configuration, on the OS or both. I am a novice when it comes to networking however most resources for Windows server 2008 R2 seem to assume a fair amount of experience already. I realise that using this particular OS may seem like overkill for what I currently wish to do with it (stream content to other devices and backup) but as I can get a copy for free it seems sensible. Edit: From reading answers posted I feel I should give more information. I have now tried to add a static IP address using my router configuration settings. I have used the getmac command to get the mac address of the server. My ISP is Virgin Media and I have gone to the LAN IP section and I have added an IP address to the DHCP Reservation Lease Info. I can now use remote desktop connection internally to remote to the server (so I am assuming assigning this IP has worked). How do I configure this on the OS as well? I am also unsure on how I would remote to this machine outside of my local network?

• Convert MPG w/ AC3 audio to something else - on a Mac

  I'm helping with a small volunteer media team, and they have several .mpg videos that don't appear to have sound when played in QuickTime, iTunes, Real Player, etc, on the local Mac machine. I was able to hear audio after transferring one of the movies to a Windows machine that had VLC media player on it. Through VLC I was able to discover that the audio stream is a52 / AC3 format. We use Autodesk Cleaner in our normal workflow of converting the format of our videos to FLV, but for some reason it's unable to convert this particular batch of videos (well, the video converts fine, but with no audio). Obviously, it seems that there's a codec issue here, but I'm not sure how to correct it. (I'm not extremely familiar with Macs, and/or Autodesk Cleaner). I've seen the Perian codec pack, but I'm not sure that having the codecs on the system will enable Cleaner to convert these videos (particularly the audio stream, since the video converts fine). Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking, or will we have to use something else for this particular batch of videos? If so, what?

  Original Question I've been using a FS-H200 (not the Pro variant) recorder with a JVC ProHD camera. I have been shooting with the DTE FORMAT to Quicktime (.mov). I copied the files to an external hard drive and am now trying to edit. The files will play back in VLC, as they would be expected to. However they will not import into Adobe Premiere CS5.5, instead giving an error: Unsupported format or damaged file. Quicktime gives the following error when attempting to play the files: Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie (Filename) To try and fix this, I have installed the following codec packs: K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit Full (version 5.9, latest) K-Lite Codec Pack 32-bit Full (version 8.4, latest) MainConcept Codec Suite (Broadcast) v5.1 for Adobe CS5 Reinstalled Quicktime with new download from Apple The same errors and problems still exist. From this I can assume that there is an issue with Quicktime and that is what Premiere is using as an encoder/decoder for the codec. Is there any way to fix this? ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 only supports C# Razor views which use the .cshtml file extension. VB.NET support will be enabled in later releases of ASP.NET MVC 3. Using the previous controller example, the two values added to the ViewData dictionary can be rewritten using the following code: public ActionResult Index() {     ViewModel.Title = "The Title";     ViewModel.Message = "Hello World!"; } “Add View” Dialog Box Supports Multiple View Engines The Add View dialog box in Visual Studio includes extensibility hooks that allow it to support multiple view engines, as shown in the following figure: Service Location and Dependency Injection Support ASP.NET MVC 3 introduces improved support for applying Dependency Injection (DI) via Inversion of Control (IoC) containers. ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 provides the following hooks for locating services and injecting dependencies: - Creating controller factories. - Creating controllers and setting dependencies. - Setting dependencies on view pages for both the Web Form view engine and the Razor view engine (for types that derive from ViewPage, ViewUserControl, ViewMasterPage, WebViewPage). - Setting dependencies on action filters. Using a Dependency Injection container is not required in order for ASP.NET MVC 3 to function properly. Global Filters ASP.NET MVC 3 allows you to register filters that apply globally to all controller action methods. Adding a filter to the global filters collection ensures that the filter runs for all controller requests. To register an action filter globally, you can make the following call in the Application_Start method in the Global.asax file: GlobalFilters.Filters.Add(new MyActionFilter()); The source of global action filters is abstracted by the new IFilterProvider interface, which can be registered manually or by using Dependency Injection. This allows you to provide your own source of action filters and choose at run time whether to apply a filter to an action in a particular request. New JsonValueProviderFactory Class The new JsonValueProviderFactory class allows action methods to receive JSON-encoded data and model-bind it to an action-method parameter. This is useful in scenarios such as client templating. Client templates enable you to format and display a single data item or set of data items by using a fragment of HTML. ASP.NET MVC 3 lets you connect client templates easily with an action method that both returns and receives JSON data. Support for .NET Framework 4 Validation Attributes and IvalidatableObject The ValidationAttribute class was improved in the .NET Framework 4 to enable richer support for validation. When you write a custom validation attribute, you can use a new IsValid overload that provides a ValidationContext instance. This instance provides information about the current validation context, such as what object is being validated. This change enables scenarios such as validating the current value based on another property of the model. The following example shows a sample custom attribute that ensures that the value of PropertyOne is always larger than the value of PropertyTwo: public class CompareValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute {     protected override ValidationResult IsValid(object value,              ValidationContext validationContext) {         var model = validationContext.ObjectInstance as SomeModel;         if (model.PropertyOne > model.PropertyTwo) {            return ValidationResult.Success;         }         return new ValidationResult("PropertyOne must be larger than PropertyTwo");     } } Validation in ASP.NET MVC also supports the .NET Framework 4 IValidatableObject interface. This interface is designed to be independent of the underlying implementation; therefore, where you implement the interface depends on the validation framework in use. For example, for the default data annotations-based validator, the interface would be applied on the validation attribute. Support for .NET Framework 4 Metadata Attributes ASP.NET MVC 3 now supports .NET Framework 4 metadata attributes such as DisplayAttribute. New IMetadataAware Interface The new IMetadataAware interface allows you to write attributes that simplify how you can contribute to the ModelMetadata creation process. Before this interface was available, you needed to write a custom metadata provider in order to have an attribute provide extra metadata. This interface is consumed by the AssociatedMetadataProvider class, so support for the IMetadataAware interface is automatically inherited by all classes that derive from that class (notably, the DataAnnotationsModelMetadataProvider class). New Action Result Types In ASP.NET MVC 3, the Controller class includes two new action result types and corresponding helper methods. HttpNotFoundResult Action The new HttpNotFoundResult action result is used to indicate that a resource requested by the current URL was not found. The status code is 404. This class derives from HttpStatusCodeResult. The Controller class includes an HttpNotFound method that returns an instance of this action result type, as shown in the following example: public ActionResult List(int id) {     if (id < 0) {                 return HttpNotFound();     }     return View(); } HttpStatusCodeResult Action The new HttpStatusCodeResult action result is used to set the response status code and description. Permanent Redirect The HttpRedirectResult class has a new Boolean Permanent property that is used to indicate whether a permanent redirect should occur. A permanent redirect uses the HTTP 301 status code. Corresponding to this change, the Controller class now has several methods for performing permanent redirects: - RedirectPermanent - RedirectToRoutePermanent - RedirectToActionPermanent These methods return an instance of HttpRedirectResult with the Permanent property set to true. Breaking Changes The order of execution for exception filters has changed for exception filters that have the same Order value. In ASP.NET MVC 2 and earlier, exception filters on the controller with the same Order as those on an action method were executed before the exception filters on the action method. This would typically be the case when exception filters were applied without a specified order Order value. In MVC 3, this order has been reversed in order to allow the most specific exception handler to execute first. As in earlier versions, if the Order property is explicitly specified, the filters are run in the specified order. Known Issues When you are editing a Razor view (CSHTML file), the Go To Controller menu item in Visual Studio will not be available, and there are no code snippets.
