• Flash: Using mouse wheel events in full screen mode (Windows and Mac)

  Although Flash has a mouse wheel event (MouseEvent.MOUSE_WHEEL), it comes with quite a few problems. The first is that the event is not yet supported on the Mac. So there are a bunch of solutions, all of which (basically) capture the mousewheel (or DOMMouseScroll) event in javascript and pass it into the flash app. Luckily, under all the Mac browsers I tested, this also works when flash is in fullscreen mode. Problem 2 is that flash ignores mouse wheel events with small "deltas". For example, Microsoft's IntelliPoint Mice with "Smooth Scroll" causes this problem. A solution to this is the same as the solution for the mac... i.e. capture the javascript mouse wheel event in the browser and pass it to the app. The issue is that of the browsers in windows that I tested (firefox, ie, safari, and chrome), they don't seem to capture this event when flash is in full screen mode. Does anyone know why or how to fix that? I currently have a hybrid solution that always takes events from javascript (in non-fullscreen or fullscreen mode) except when it's in fullscreen mode on Windows (at which point it takes them from the flash mousewheel event). So the only times it fails is in full screen mode on Windows with a mouse that has small deltas. Anyone have a full solution? Or just a better one?

• What's the best NAME for "quick" Category you add to a file?

  So the other day I was sick of typing out repetetive addTarget:action:forControlEvents:s, and macros are only entertaining for so long, so I did this: @implementation UIControl (xx) -(void)addTarget:(id)target action:(SEL)action { [self addTarget:target action:action forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; } @end *and simply added it at the top of the .m file in question. Works great of course, but notice the "xx".* What's the best thing to NAME a "quick" Category like this? Annoyingly, it appears you can not leave the xx blank - it would then become an "Extension" (which, incidentally, I don't understand at all). I was thinking maybe: a single underscore the name of the class again identically "quick" perhaps the name of the class in this file (as in "quick extra routines for UIControl in CherryBomb") - so it would be UIControl(CherryBomb), ie, remind you that these extra routines are handy for CherryBomb "x" your or your company's initials (use the same "quick" Category name everywhere) "ThisTextNeverUsedAnywhere" By the way, I've been assuming that Categories only happen in the files that see them (CherryBomb.m in the example) - they do not from then on apply app-wide. ie they only apply where you include the header file (UIControl+NattyStuff) or in the "quick" case only in the file to which one adds the text. (By the way ... it appears you do not actually need to include an interface for such a Category, i.e. you can omit... //you can actually get away without these lines... //#import <UIKit/UIControl.h> //@interface UIControl (x) //-(void)addTarget:(id)target action:(SEL)action; //@end ... that part and it works fine.) For people who love Categories, and who doesn't, what's the answer to this troubling question? What should you name a "quick" Category where the name is never going to be referenced again and is irrelevant? Is "_" a solution?

• Preserve whitespace and formatting for text returned from $.get jquery call

  I have a jquery $.get() call in my app that requests an entire web page. In the callback function, I access a div in the returned page, get its data and show it on my page. The problem is that the text I get from the div does not preserve the source formatting. If the div in the requested page had say an ordered list, then when i get that text and display on my page, it shows up as a paragraph with items inline instead of being shown as a list. • Have to click twice to submit the form in IE8

  A very peculiar bug in a simple html form. After changing an option, button has to be clicked twice to submit the form. Button is focused after clicking once, but form is not submitted. It's only this way in IE8 and works fine in Chrome and FF. PAY ATTENTION TO 'g^' right before <select>. It has to be a letter or number followed by a symbol to generate this bug. For example, 'a#','f$','3(' all create the same bug. Otherwise it works fine. BTW, if you don't change option and click button right away,there won't be any bug. • How to retrieve a numbered sequence range from a List of filenames?

  I would like to automatically parse the entire numbered sequence range of a List<FileData> of filenames (sans extensions) by checking which part of the filename changes. Here is an example (file extension already removed): First filename: IMG_0000 Last filename: IMG_1000 Numbered Range I need: 0000 to 1000 Except I need to deal with every possible type of file naming convention such as: 0000 ... 9999 20080312_0000 ... 20080312_9999 IMG_0000 - Copy ... IMG_9999 - Copy 8er_green3_00001 .. 8er_green3_09999 etc. I need the entire 0-padded range e.g. 0001 not just 1 The sequence number is 0-padded e.g. 0001 The sequence number can be located anywhere e.g. IMG_0000 - Copy The range can start and end with anything i.e. doesn't have to start with 1 and end with 9999 Whenever I get something working for 8 random test cases, the 9th test breaks everything and I end up re-starting from scratch. I've currently been comparing only the first and last filenames (as opposed to iterating through all filenames): void FindRange(List<FileData> files, out string startRange, out string endRange) { string firstFile = files.First().ShortName; string lastFile = files.Last().ShortName; ... } Does anyone have any clever ideas?

• Installing PIL on Cygwin

• After travelling back in Firefox history, javascript won't run.

  When I use the back button on Firefox to reach a previously visited page, scripts on that page won't run again. Is there any fix/workaround to have the scripts execute again when viewing the page the second time? Please note that I have tested the same pages on Google Chrome and Internet Explorer and they work as intended. • Is hardware accelerated CSS3 in Safari 4 & 5 broken, or my CSS and JS?

  Hi all, I've created a somewhat silly site that shows you the expected weather forecast for any city in the World. On webkit based browsers, when the weather is sunny a sun with CSS3 animated rotated sunbeams appears. This works fine on Chrome. An example (sunny, at the moment) page is: http://willitraintoday.co.uk/iceland/reykjavik/ However, when viewed in Safari 4 or 5 on Mac Snow Leopard, when the sun appears the sky background appears over it. Weirder still, as the cloud containing the advert moves across the sky, it squashes the main text. When the cloud reaches the left edge, the text appears wider than normal and starts squashing down again. I've tried: - Disabling the CSS3 animation; it works fine in Safari - Juggling the z-index of various elements; to no avail Is there something up with my Javascript or CSS, or is the hardware accelerated snow leopard Safari broken in this case? It seems not to happen in Safari 4 on Leopard, but I don't have Leopard any more to test myself. Grateful for any opinions!

• Unable to turn off notice errors in PHP 5.3.2

  Hi everyone, I recently migrated to PHP 5.3.2, and realized that I am unable to turn off notice errors in my site now. The only way I'm able to get rid of notice errors is by setting : display_errors = Off That is, of course, not something I can do since I need to see errors to fix them, and I would like to see errors on the webpage that I am coding rather than log them somewhere. Can someone help? Is this a bug in PHP 5.3.2 or something I am doing wrong? Thank you very much for your time! P. S. Also, would anyone know how I can get PHP 5.3.2 to support the .php3 extension?

• getting data from tableviewcell to 2nd view

  I am very new to this and am trying to learn by creating a few little apps for myself. I have a navigation-based app where the user taps the row to select a film title - i then want the second view to show details of the film. Thanks to a very helpful person here i am getting the results of the row pressed as 'rowTitle' as follows : (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSString *key = [keys objectAtIndex:indexPath.section]; NSArray *nameSection = [names objectForKey:key]; NSString *rowTitle = [nameSection objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; NSLog(@"rowTitle = %@", rowTitle); [tableView deselectRowAtIndexPath:indexPath animated:YES]; I am, however, struggling to make the data at 'rowTitle' available to the 2nd view - basically, if i can get the info - for example rowTitle is "aliens2" - i want to be able to add a new extension to the end of the string returned by 'rowTitle' in order to point to an image (if that makes sense) in the second view... something like tempImageName=[** this is where the info from rowTitle needs to be i suppose**]; tempImageType=@".png"; finalImageName=[tempImageName stringByAppendingString:tempImageType]; does this make sense to anyone (apologies if it doesnt - i know what i want but how to explain it is a little more awkward!) Thanks again for any help anyone can give (and any help as to formatting these questions would be useful too obviously!!)!

• jQuery: change content of <option> elements

  I have a select widget with a couple of AJAX enhancements. <select id="authors"> <option value="1">Foo Bar</option> <option value="2" selected="selected">Bar Baz</option> </select> Now, if the selected option changes, I want to change the "content" ("Foo Bar" and "Bar Baz" in the example). How can I do that with jQuery? I tried the following, but obviously, it doesn't work. $('#authors').change(function(){ $('#authors option[selected=selected]').html('new content'); }); /edit: to clarify, the selector '#authors option[selected=selected]' works fine, it selects the correct option DOM element. But .html('new content') does nothing. 2nd edit: OK, this is embarassing. I tried my code in Chrome's JavaScript console, where it didn't have any effect. After jAndy clearly demonstrated that it works in jsFiddle, I tried it in the FireBug console, and there it works. Lesson learned :-)

  Hey I am building a web page with angular. The problem is that there are somethings already build without angular and I have to include them as well The problem is this. I have something like this in my main.html: <ngInclude src="partial.html"> </ngInclude> And my partial.html has something like this <h2> heading 1 <h2> <script type="text/javascript" src="static/js/partial.js"> </script> And my partial.js has nothing to do with angularjs. nginclude works and I can see the html, but I can not see the javascript file being loaded at all. I know how to use firebug/ chrome-dev-tool, but I can not even see the network request being made. What am I doing wrong? I knwo angular has some special meaning to script tag. Can I override it?

• Should we deploy a Webkit browser for our intranet applications?

  At my place of employment, we are increasingly finding it difficult to develop for IE, which was historically the easiest browser to target, from an intranet-app point of view. It was already deployed. It already understood NTLM authentication, thus well integrated with our domain-level security. It had neat, albeit non-standard features such as XMLDOM and XmlHTTP. Now, we are increasingly irritated by issues presented by IE: There are several versions: IE 7, 8, and soon 9 beta, which all have slightly different issues related to performance, functionality (especially re:security and zones), and aesthetics. IE 7 and 8 are slower than Webkit-based browsers. Period. There are technology limitations such as missing canvas element, CSS bugs, etc. that make it hard to use 3rd party packages or even consistently write code across IE versions. Users are increasingly using Firefox or Chrome, even for intranet use. Does anyone have experience with making a transition? Any advice would be welcome.

  I'm writing an extension for crossbrowser input&textarea selection getter and setter. So that's the way i write my code: HTMLInputElement.prototype.getSelectionRange = get_selection_range; HTMLInputElement.prototype.setSelection = set_selection_range; HTMLTextAreaElement.prototype.getSelectionRange = get_selection_range; HTMLTextAreaElement.prototype.setSelection = set_selection_range; get_selection_range and set_selection_range are those extended functions. So i just wanted to replace someInputElement.selectionStart = a; // and whole lot of code due to browser someInputElement.selectionEnd = b; // compatibility with just someInputElement.setSelection(a, b); someInputElement.setSelection({ start: a, end: b }); someOtherElement.setSelection(someInputElement.getSelection()); But then i met couple of difficulties in IE7. First of all, IE7 doesnt know what is HTMLInputElement. I don't want to extend whole Object. Well, that would be the last thing i'll do, but i want to evade it. Functions get_selection_range and set_selection_range are alright, don't ask what's within, you've seen it couple of times already. So the question is: is there any legit substitution for HTMLInputElement in JS for IE7?

• Using JQuery to traverse DOM structure, finding a specific <table> element located after HTML 'comme

  I currently have a website source code (no control over the source) which contains certain content that needs to be manipulated. This would be simple on the surface, however there is no unique ID attribute on the tag in question that can uniquely identify it, and therefore allow for further traversal. Here is a snippet of the source code, surrounding the tag in question. ... <td width="100%"> <!--This table snaps the content columns(one or two)--> <table border="0" width="100%"> ... Essentially, the HTML comment stuck out as an easy way to gain access to that element. Using the JQuery comment add-on from this question, and some help from snowlord comment below, I have been able to identify the comment and retrieve the following output using the 'dump' extension. $('td').comments().filter(":contains('This table snaps the content columns(one or two)')").dump(); returns; jQuery Object { 0 = DOMElement [ nodeName: DIV nodeValue: null innerHTML: [ 0 = String: This table snaps the content columns(one or two) ] ] } However I am not sure how to traverse to the sibling element in the DOM. This should be simple, but I haven't had much selector experience with JQuery. Any suggestions are appreciated.

• Linq to SQL code generator features

  I'm very fond of Linq to SQL and the programming model it encourages. I think that in many cases when you are in control of both the database schema and the code it is not worth the effort to have different relational and object models for the data. Working with Linq to SQL makes it simple to have type safe data access from .NET, using the partial extension methods to implement business rules. Unfortunately I do not like the dbml designer due to the lack of a schema refresh function. So far I have used SqlMetal, but that lacks the customization options of the dbml designer. Because of that I've started working on a tool which regenerates the whole code file like SqlMetal, but has the ability to do the customizations that are available in the dbml designer (and maybe more in the future). The customizations will be described in an xml file which only contains those parts that shouldn't have default values. This should keep the xml file size down as well as the maintenance burden of it. To help me focus on the right features, I would like to know: What would be your favourite feature in a linq to sql code generator?

• Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

  We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output. • Facebook Application with PHP running losing session

  Iam trying to build an Facebook Application based on PHP. The Application is running under php on my own Webhost inside an Canvas as iFrame. I have included the newest Client Library for PHP from Facebook: facebook-php-sdk-94fcb13 To Authorize the user inside my application iam trying to use Facebook Connect, like the example shipped with the Client. Everything works fine the 1st Login, but when i hit the F5 Key to reload the page, the session is lost and i have to login again. When i call my application outside of the Facebook Canvas everything is fine. Iam not sure, but i think my Browser (Chrome/FireFox - Ubuntu) is not allowing to store an cookie inside an iFrame. Does someone knows an solution for this Problem?   I'm having a problem where the my anchor tags sometimes aren't displaying their links. This is happening on Mobile Safari on multiple iPhones, and in the iPhone simulator. I'm using jQtouch r147, PhoneGap, and jQuery 1.4.2. When I check for anchor.html() == null, I've also tried to .remove() the anchor tag, and re-create it. But it always comes back without the name displayed. This happens on the mobile device and in the simulator, but I've never seen it happen in Safari or in Chrome. Has anyone seen something like this? I can't find the cause, and I can't get it to stop. • How do i make divs go into another row when full?

  My code is something like the below. When theres 3 images everything is fine once theres 4 it gets full and moves the entire div.top into another row. How do i make the div inside top just start a new row instead? I tried writing .top width=500px but once it hits or passes it instead the images inside are squeeze together instead of each being 150x150. I tried max-width on top instead and in opera and chrome i see the border of top as 500width but the images continue to render pass it. (i have a firefox problem with my div so the width looks fixed to something else). • Ignore folders with certain filetypes

  I'm trying in vain to rewrite my old Powershell script found here - "$_.extension -eq" not working as intended? - for Python.I have no Python experience or knowledge and my 'script' is a mess but it mostly works. The only thing missing is that I would like to be able to ignore folders which don't contain 'mp3s', or whichever filetype I specify. I could only get the script to work properly if I created the 'pls.m3u' by default. The problem is that that creates a lot of empty 'pls.m3u' files in folders which contain only '.jpg' files for example. You get the idea. I'm sure this script is blasphemous to Python users but any help would be greatly appreciated.
