• How to do orientation rotation like built-in Calc app?

  I'm trying to make an app that handles orientation/rotation similarly to the way the built-in Calc app does. If you check out that app, in portrait mode there's a normal calculator, and if you rotate to landscape mode there are additional buttons that appear to the left. I can't figure out how to do this by setting the autosize masks. The problem is the "normal" calculator view is 320px wide in portrait mode, but actually shrinks to around 240px in landscape mode to fit the additional controls. I've seen examples like the AlternateViews sample app that have two different view controllers (one for portrait and one for landscape), but they don't seem to animate the transitions between the views nicely like the Calc app does. I've also tried setting the frames for the views manually in willAnimateSecondHalfOfRotationFromInterfaceOrientation, but it doesn't seem to look "quite right" and also I'm not certain how that works with the autoresize mask. Any ideas how this is done? Thanks!

• Best .NET Solution for Frequently Changed Database

  I am currently architecting a small CRUD applicaton. Their database is a huge mess and will be changing frequently over the course of the next 6 months to a year. What would you recommend for my data layer: 1) ORM (if so, which one?) 2) Linq2Sql 3) Stored Procedures 4) Parametrized Queries I really need a solution that will be dynamic enough (both fast and easy) where I can replace tables and add/delete columns frequently. Note: I do not have much experience with ORM (only a little SubSonic) and generally tend to use stored procedures so maybe that would be the way to go. I would love to learn Ling2Sql or NHibernate if either would allow for the situation I've described above.

• Deleting Part of An Array in Java to Free Memory on Heap

  I am implementing a dynamic programming algorithm for the knapsack problem in Java. I declare the array and then initialize its size to be [number of objects][capacity of knapsack]. When my number of objects or my capacity gets too large, I get a memory error because I run out of space on the heap. My questions is: If I delete rows from my double array as I go along, will Java free the memory as I delete? Or does Java reserve that memory space for the size of the array I originally created? If it's the latter, is there a way to manually free the memory in Java? Thanks for your Help!

• How should I capture clickstream data?

  I'd like to start using clickstream analysis to improve a dynamic site's user experience. I'd like to rule out two options: parameterizing URLs (index.php?src=http://www.example.com) and immediate database logging. The former makes pretty ugly URLs and isn't great for SEO and the latter might slow down page render when there are lots of concurrent users. Assuming these aren't viable options, I think I'm left with doing an asynchronous POST to a server side script that runs a database query and returns a 204 (no data) response. Is this the best option for capturing clickstream data?

• x86 Assembly - printf doesn't print without "\n"

  So I'm confused. I'm going through the book "Programming from the Ground Up" and am working with using libraries. printf is working just fine so long as I include a "\n" in the string, but without it it will print absolutely nothing. Any idea why this happens? Code: .section .data my_str: .ascii "Jimmy Joe is %d years old!\n\0" my_num: .long 76 .section .text .globl _start _start: pushl my_num pushl $my_str call printf movl $1, %eax movl $0, %ebx int $0x80 Also, when I use -m elf_i386 for 32-bit mode and -dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2 -lc to link, I get the warning ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib64/libc.so when searching for -lc If that makes any difference, or if anybody has any suggestions as to how to have it load the 32-bit library directly. Background: I have converted most of the html files of my legacy site into XML (which match the directory structure of my 'public docs' folder).   Hi! I'm using winforms. I spend a lot of time drawing forms (maybe not a lot, but it is a boring task). To sum up... I want to develop a simple aplication that connect to a sql server database, let the user to select a table, and put the controls in a form for me (generate the designer code), based on the tipe of each column. Then my app will name each control like the column of the table, set the maxlengh property (if the type is varchar), and create a label with the same text near the control. If the column is a FK, then the app will draw a combobox and so on. I saw that Telerik Open ORM make something like this, but I only need a simple app for the IU Generation. If the same day I finish my little application I discover a tool that make the same... I will feel myself stupid :D Are there any tool out there that do this work for me? Thanks

  I am trying to implement orientation change functionality in my application.I have overrided -(void) didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation. In this method i change the frame size of the tableview(including the position of the cell items) which is present in the view. The tableview Details: Added to the view as [self.view addSubView:tableView] in the viewDidLoad method of the view controller; Cell item (row) has a textfield and a segmented control. There are 10 cells in the table view and in landscape mode only 2 cells are visible and in potrait mode 5 cells are visible. I have implemented scroller. Issue: Certain times on changing the orientation to potrait mode certain segmented controls in the cell are not rendered (Not shown at all). This happens when i am viewing the last couple of cells in the landscape mode and i change the orientation to potrait mode.

  Hello, I've been seing Func< for sometime now, and I've manage to avoid it (for now). But, now it looks like I can't dodge it forever. For instance, I tried Dynamic Linq, but almost everything was in terms of Func<. I've tried one of my book (C# 2008/Deitel&Deitel) and also MSDN but I'm not getting it yet. • I need a simple slideshow for images of different sizes

  I'm looking for a very basic slideshow which displays images of various sizes. For example, the first image could be a standard 800x600 but the next might be a taller portrait image and so on. The slideshow doesn't need to have any controls. The specification just states that the page will be black and in the centre there'll be the area where images will display. As far as I know, it will be very simple like this - www.jeffcutter.net. I'm limited on time here so I'm not able to look into writing a custom one or anything like that.   First-class value can be passed as an argument returned from a subroutine assigned into a variable. Second-class value just can be passed as an argument. Third-class value even can't be passed as an argument. Why should these things defined like that? As I understand, "can be passed as an argument" means it can be pushed into the runtime stack;"can be assigned into a variable" means it can be moved into a different location of the memory; "can be returned from a subroutine" almost has the same meaning of "can be assigned into a variable" since the returned value always be put into a known address, so first class value is totally "movable" or "dynamic",second class value is half "movable" , and third class value is just "static", such as labels in C/C++ which just can be addressed by goto statement, and you can't do nothing with that address except "goto" .Does My understanding make any sense? or what do these three kinds of values mean exactly?

  I'm looking for a pre-built solution I can use in my RoR application. I'm ideally looking for something similar to the ASP.NET Forms authentication that provides email validation, sign-up controls, and allows users to reset their passwords. Oh yeah, and easily allows me to pull the user that is currently logged into the application. I've started to look into the already written pieces, but I've found it to be really confusing. I've looked at LoginGenerator, RestfulAuthentication, SaltedLoginGenerator, but there doesn't seem to be one place that has great tutorials or provide a comparison of them. If there's a site I just haven't discovered yet, or if there is a de-facto standard that most people use, I'd appreciate the helping hand.

• How can I get all the .pdb files in the same folder?

  I have a solution in Visual Studio 2008, it has dozens of projects. I would like to have all the pdb in the same folder. From the property page of a project I see that the pdb will go to the "Intermediate Directory"; also .obj files go to the "Intermediate Directory". Each of our projects has its own folder because we want to keep the .obj separated, at the same time I would like to have all the pdb in the same folder. Looking at the buildlog.htm I see the option /PDB which controls the pdb path, this option doesn't seem to me available in the property page. Maybe I will have to use a post buil script?

• Can I use MFC objects in STL containers?

  The following code doesn't compile for me in MSVC2005: std::vector<CMenu> vec(10); CMenu is an MFC menu object (such as a context menu). Through some testing I learned that CMenu does not have a public copy constructor. To do what I wanted to do, I needed to use a dynamic array. CMenu* menus = new CMenu[10]; // ... delete [] menus; Of course, now I've lost all the benefits of using an STL container. Do I have any other options?

  Very simple question from one somewhat new to Java: when adding an event handler (or whatever it is called in Java) to a Control, MUST it be an object? I mean, in C# I can do control.event += System.eventHandler(methodThatHandlesEvent) Sure, that's because we have delegate types in C#, but I was wondering if I can choose which method would be called when an event is raised in Java? I mean, in Java I can have something like control.AddActionListener(objectWhichClassImplementsActionListener) And then I have the stupid actionPerformed method in this class, which is the only method that is called. I know, there are more kinds of listeners, but I can't have a "ActionListenerHandler" class in which I implement several actionPerformed methods that can be assigned to different controls?

• Comparing 2 linq applications: Unexpected result

  I drafted 2 ASP.NET applications using LINQ. One connects to MS SQL Server, another to some proprietary memory structure. Both applications work with tables of 3 int fields, having 500 000 records (the memory structure is identical to SQL Server table). The controls used are regular: GridView and ObjectDataSource. In the applications I calculate the average time needed for each paging click processing. LINQ + MS SQL application demands 0.1 sec per page change. LINQ + Memory Structure demands 0.8 sec per page change. This Is shocking result. Why the application handling data in memory works 8 times slower than the application using hard drive? Can anybody tell me why that happens?

• Admin panel - what is the best way to display "static" data in the layout?

  I'm about to write a admin panel for my CMS written in CodeIgniter. There will be some user information visible at all time - both in the layout's header section and the sidebar. I'm used to do it in a way that I personally hope and think could be done a lot easier, since I'm tired of sending the same parametres to the view over and over again, when it's dynamic data that needs to be displayed on every page anyways (such as unread messages, username, name, status, etc). I'll need controllers and models, I know that, but do I have to pass, just for an example, the user's username, unread messages etc. every time I need to load a view? Should I do some kind of library for this? Now my question is: How would I do it when it comes to best practice and for making it easy to maintain in the future? I hope my question is understandable :)

  I am getting an Inconsistent Accessibility problem where I have one class that contains a List of another class namespace NS { public class Foo { public Foo() { this.bar = new List<Bar>(); } private List<Bar> bar; } public class Bar { public Bar() { } } } The error is property type NS.Bar is less accessible than property NS.Foo.Bar The structure to the application is each Foo consists of a Dynamic Array (List) of Bar. What class do I inherit from or method to override to get my controls to function at design time. • Communication between Multiple Threads in a WPF Application

  I'm creating a WPF application that uses a custom object to populate all the controls. The constructor of that object is initiated by an EventHandler that waits for an API. The problem I'm having is when I try to access any information from that object using a button for example, it returns an error saying "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it". I'm assuming this is because the EventHandler creates a new thread which doesn't allow the Main Thread to have access to it. Any ideas on how to get around this? I'm basically having the error "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it" when trying to get or set a CollectionViewSource.

• Asychronous page update with ASP.NET MVC

  Hi, I'm learning ASP.NET MVC 1.0 and need to implement an asynchronous/dynamic page update. I'm new to MVC and jQuery so I'm not sure what to look for. What I want to do is to allow a user to start a monitoring a domain layer function (similar to a news ticker) and then do a partial page update based on the continously changing results. In ASP.NET I'd do this with a javascript timer to cause a postback, and an AJAX update panel..... but this seems a bit "hacky" for ASP.NET MVC. Is there a better way?
