• iPhone SDK Internet connection detection

  I'm working on an iPhone application that makes a few calls to web services. I posted this application on the Apple store but it got rejected (and rightly so) since there was no error message displayed to the user if no Internet connection is available. Since obviously the application would not work without it. So I just wanted to know how to best achieve this? I'm guessing something needs to go in the viewDidLoad method that will throw an alert box saying something like "You need an Internet connection to use this application". Any ideas would be appreciated.

• NSOutlineView not refreshing when objects added to managed object context from NSOperations

  Background Cocoa app using core data Two processes - daemon and a main UI Daemon constantly writing to a data store UI process reads from same data store NSOutlineView in UI is bound to an NSTreeController which is bound to Application with key path of delegate.interpretedMOC What I want When the UI is activated, the outline view should update with the latest data inserted by the daemon. The Problem Main Thread Approach I fetch all the entities I'm interested in, then iterate over them, doing refreshObject:mergeChanges:YES. This works OK - the items get refreshed correctly. However, this is all running on the main thread, so the UI locks up for 10-20 seconds whilst it refreshes. Fine, so let's move these refreshes to NSOperations that run in the background instead. NSOperation Multithreaded Approach As soon as I move the refreshObject:mergeChanges: call into an NSOperation, the refresh no longer works. When I add logging messages, it's clear that the new objects are loaded in by the NSOperation subclass and refreshed. Not only that, but they are What I've tried I've messed around with this for 2 days solid and tried everything I can think of. Passing objectIDs to the NSOperation to refresh instead of an entity name. Resetting the interpretedMOC at various points - after the data refresh and before the outline view reload. I'd subclassed NSOutlineView. I discarded my subclass and set the view back to being an instance of NSOutlineView, just in case there was any funny goings on here. Added a rearrangeObjects call to the NSTreeController before reloading the NSOutlineView data. Made sure I had set the staleness interval to 0 on all managed object contexts I was using. I've got a feeling this problem is somehow related to caching core data objects in memory. But I've totally exhausted all my ideas on how I get this to work. I'd be eternally grateful of any ideas anyone else has. • Setting the Hostname in IIS Bindings Breaks Website

  I just got a Windows Server 2008 VPS and I'm having trouble getting IIS7 setup. I created a new website in IIS with the path, ip address, and hostname (like 'www.nameofsite.com') and click OK. When I browse to the site it pulls up "http://www.nameofsite.com" in the browser and... nothing... IE cannot display this webpage. If I blank out the hostname in the bindings and click [Browse] it works fine (it takes me to http://10.10.2.92 - the computer's ip). So entering the hostname breaks the website. Any ideas on what I'm missing? Services I might not have running or roles I'm missing? No server roles were initially installed on the VPS so I installed IIS, DHCP, DNS, and Application Server... overkill, but I wasn't sure what to install.

• a loading screen for a c# wpf listbox

  I'm using a list box where there are on average about 500 thumbnails (items) that can be sorted and searched. Since I'm using default databinding and search descriptors (which I've heard are slow due to reflection) the list takes a noticeable pause of a few seconds loading, sorting, and searching (the list dynamically updates based on the contents of the search box so the first one or two letters typed are really slow). I don't think I can fully do away with reflection give the timeframe for the project, and speed isn't super essential, but I'd like some kind of graphical indication of the delay so it doesn't confuse the user. How could I do something like a website video loading screen where the listbox grays out and some kind of loading circle indicates it's processing until the list is ready? Or even just grayed out with the words "Loading..." for a few seconds could work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!!!

When I was calling these method from javaFX applet, all worked as expected. Now I'm trying to call them from JAX-RS webservice (I don't see any logical difference as in both cases ejb was looked up in initial context) and I keep getting this exception. When I set up XADatasource in glassfish 2.1 connection pools, I got nullpointer exception on em2. Any ideas what to try next? Regards

  Hi I've been tinkering around with the two techniques to modify the ribbon with an MS Word addin (Visual Studio 2010, .NET 3.5), a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Ribbon.OfficeRibbon and Microsoft.Office.Core.IRibbonExtensibility. I was hoping to switch between the two in my addin's CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject, but for some reason it is not called now. The documentation says that if an addin implements CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject that it will be called. When I create a fresh project to test doing this very thing, it works. I'd prefer not to abandon my project as-is. Any ideas? Thank you.

• Django QuerySet filter + order_by + limit

  So I have a Django app that processes test results, and I'm trying to find the median score for a certain assessment. I would think that this would work: e = Exam.objects.all() total = e.count() median = int(round(total / 2)) median_exam = Exam.objects.filter(assessment=assessment.id).order_by('score')[median:1] median_score = median_exam.score But it always returns an empty list. I can get the result I want with this: e = Exam.objects.all() total = e.count() median = int(round(total / 2)) exams = Exam.objects.filter(assessment=assessment.id).order_by('score') median_score = median_exam[median].score I would just prefer not to have to query the entire set of exams. I thought about just writing a raw MySQL query that looks something like: SELECT score FROM assess_exam WHERE assessment_id = 5 ORDER BY score LIMIT 690,1 But if possible, I'd like to stay within Django's ORM. Mostly, it's just bothering me that I can't seem to use order_by with a filter and a limit. Any ideas?

• XDebug, how to disable remote debugging for single .php file?

  Hello, I'm using Eclipse IDE + remote Xdebug. EclipseIDE is listening 9000 port for some kind of Xdebug information. There are some php scripts running by cron on server. So, every cron execution xdebug is sending information to my workstation and EclipseIDE is trying to find this file in my project. But file couldn't be find because cron running scrits do not relate to the project I'm working with.   Hi all, I'm using jQuery to post HTTP requests to my PHP page (Apache/Linux, if that matters). I carefully validate on the client so that empty requests are not sent. However on occasions, I'd get an empty request like this: - $_POST collection empty ($_GET collection also empty); - Content-Length is nonzero (a number below 100, consistent with a valid POST from my script) - Content-Type properly application/x-www-form-urlencoded - reading from php://input yields an empty string It's as if $_POST is somehow eaten on the way. I checked the code very carefully - I don't do anything to the contents of $_POST. Any ideas, please?

• Binding scattered/overlapping images to a WPF Canvas

  I am porting a GDI application over to WPF, where I displayed several dozen images onto Form, then drew polygons, circles, rectangles, etc over the top of these images using GDI Pens and Brushes. I'm starting to get the hang of WPF binding and would like to store all of these images and markup graphics in my ViewModel. My VM contains an ObservableCollection of my custom DrawingEntitys, DrawingEntity contains DependencyProperties for BitmapSource, Height, Width, CanvasTopLeftY, and CanvasTopLeftX, that I update frequently in the collection. I know my binding is working, I just can't figure out how to bind and draw this collection onto a Canvas. I've played around with ItemsControl and ItemsSource to death, too many different ways to list here. I can display the DrawingEntity.Bitmaps onto the canvas but Canvas.Top won't bind to CanvasTopLeftY in the DrawingEntity, everything is overlapped at 0,0. I think I'm missing an obvious strategy. Any ideas?

I can see a bunch of JSON data that includes "\n\n" between paragraphs, but for some reason the PHP explode() function doesn't work. Essentially I just want to grab the "meat" of each Wikipedia page (not titles or any formatting, just the content) and break it by paragraph into an array. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Unable to use Client Application Services with custom MembershipProvider.

  Hi, I have a Windows-Forms Application that I configured to use with an ASP.NET Service that is an Authentication service using a custom MembershipProvider. When I call Membership.CreateUser in the Windows Application a NotSupportedException is thrown telling: "Specified method is not supported.". I tried creating a web page in the website and test the MembershipProvider, everything works just fine when woeking from within the website. Any ideas or link for how to use custom (not SqlMembershipProvider) MembershipProvider will be really appreciated! Edit: The method ValidateUser does work. The overriden CreateUser doesn't work I tried Override Sub CreateUser(.......) As MembershipUser Return New User() End Sub But I still get the same excetption as before.

• Ending php sessions for debugging purposes

  Hi, This might be very easy to do, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Basically, I have a loosely couple web-app written in python and php. The python code uses PHP sessions (generated from the PHP app when the user logs in) to check if the user is logged in/has permission to access the given python resource. My question is this: What is the easiest way to force all active sessions to timeout. I would like to do this for debugging purposes, to test out the python code. I tried changing the session.max_lifetime PHP variable, but that still doesn't guarantee that the session has ended and is removed. I tried just deleting the file, but this seems to cause problems (when i refresh the php page, errors show up in my apache logs and it won't reload quickly) Any ideas?

• Algorithm: efficient way to remove duplicate integers from an array

  I got this problem from an interview with Microsoft. Given an array of random integers, write an algorithm in C that removes duplicated numbers and return the unique numbers in the original array. E.g Input: {4, 8, 4, 1, 1, 2, 9} Output: {4, 8, 1, 2, 9, ?, ?} One caveat is that the expected algorithm should not required the array to be sorted first. And when an element has been removed, the following elements must be shifted forward as well. Anyway, value of elements at the tail of the array where elements were shifted forward are negligible. Update: The result must be returned in the original array and helper data structure (e.g. hashtable) should not be used. However, I guess order preservation is not necessary. Update2: For those who wonder why these impractical constraints, this was an interview question and all these constraints are discussed during the thinking process to see how I can come up with different ideas.

  I would like to execute a frame redirect in C# from my managed module for the IIS 7. When I call context.Response.Redirect(@"http://www.myRedirect.org");the correct page is shown but also the address is shown in the browser. And that is exactly what I do not want.   I have eventually managed to fiddle HyperJAXB so that when XSD has complexType A and this has an IDREF to complexType B, then HyperJAXB will generate @OneToOne JPA annotations between the the two generated entities. However now I'm facing another problem: the XSD has complex type X that can IDREF to either complex type Y or complex type Z. In the end, I need instance of complex type X contain reference to either instance of class Y or class Z. Do you have any wild ideas how can this be done without manual alterations to the generated classes? And at the same time to make sure these entities are marshalled to a correct XML? How about using the JAXB plugin that allows generating classes so that they implement a particular interface? Could that lead anywhere?

  I have been trying for ages in all sorts of ways (short of ritual incantations and sacrifices) to get Visual Studio Team Edition 2008 to allow me to create Office 2003 solutions, whether those be templates or documents. No matter what I try, I'm always presented with an error which basically says "You've got the wrong version of Office installed. Try installing something compatible". I have the complete installation of Office 2003 Pro installed along with the Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies (which I put on after I installed Office) and then VS2008TE as already mentioned. There has to be some reason why this refuses to work, but I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

• How to fix slow scrolling when using webkit-transform and relative positioning on the iphone

  I have implemented scrolling of a div by using relative positioning and webkit animation for the iphone, it works beautifully on desktop safari but is choppy on the actual iphone (fine on the simulator). The scrolling works by having a div nested and clipped (overflow:hidden) by its parent. I then set the top position and animate it with -webkit style declarations. The iphone seems to noticeably slow down when there are a lot of items in the inner div. Any ideas how make the scrolling smoother? This was a problem with iScroll code and my own hand coded stuff.

• Tomcat - Redirect to Error Page when ServletContextListener fails

  When Tomcat starts it calls my ServletContextListener to obtain a database connection, which I will later use in other servlets with getServletContext(). It is called in my web.xml as: listener listener-class org.ppdc.database.DBCPoolingListener /listener-class /listener (I removed the < because they wouldn't display properly in this message. If I cannot connect to the database when Tomcat starts up I get a 404 error, because Tomcat cannot start the application. How can I redirect the user to a custom error page at this point? I tried the following in my web.xml (I have the < brackets in the original): (error-page) (error-code404/error-code) (location/file_not_found.html/location) (/error-page) Any ideas on how to redirect a user to one of my error pages when Tomcat tries to start the application? So it makes long running requests. While waiting a response for this request, other requests can be made concurrently. The application works in most cases.
