• Ubuntu hardware wireless switch has no effect after suspend and 13.10 upgrade

  I'm posting this on SU after it stalled on askubuntu. I hope someone here can help! If you'd prefer to answer on AU itself, here's the link: http://askubuntu.com/questions/365177/hardware-wireless-switch-has-no-effect-after-suspend-and-13-10-upgrade Wireless works fine after a reboot, but after a suspend the hardware switch (for my laptop this is f12) has no effect on the wireless, it is just permanently off, and shows that it is with a red LED. This question has an answer urging to install the original driver, but it wasn't an "accepted answer" so I'd rather not take a chance on it. Also I'll admit I'm a bit lost on that and would like help doing so with the specific information I've given. • Accessing WindowsXP shared printer from macbook?

  My new printer is setup on WindowsXP, it works and it is configured as a shared printer. I then setup a printer from Mac OSX 10.6.3 using the approved driver from the setup CD. I browsed for the printer via the network. When I send a test page, it queues, but never prints. Its as if the driver thinks the printer is local to the mac and just never finishes printing. THe configuration shows as: smb://dragoneye/CanonMP2 Where dragoneye is the name of the Windows XP server and the CanonMP2 is the little multi-purpose printer. My other Windows' CPU can setup and print. Is this a known problem or am I missing a setting??

• Clone existing structs with different alignment in Visual C++

  Is there a way to clone an existing struct with different member alignment in Visual C++? Here is the background: I use an 3rd-party library, which uses several structs. To fill up the structs, I pass the address of the struct instances to some functions. Unfortunately, the functions only returns unaligned buffer, so that data of some members are always wrong. /Zp is out of choice, since it breaks the other parts of the program. I know #pragma pack modifies the alignment of the following struct, but I would like to avoid copying the structs into my code, for the definitions in the library might change in the future. • jQuery is not defined on my staging server but works fine on my local

  If you pop open this page with your javascript console, you'll notice a bunch of JS errors. I don't get these errors in my local environment and it seems like it is happening because $ is not defined. I have tried to mimic my local environment exactly on staging by using the same environment.rb file and removing all JS caching but it is making no difference. Can anyone tell why jQuery is crapping out? It might be something really stupid, but I need a second pair of eyes.

  While writing a test suite, I needed to provide an implementation of operator<<(std::ostream&... for Boost unit test to use. Why (what rule causes this)?   I am configuring Rails with MongoDB, and find a strange problem when paring config/mongo.yml file. config/mongo.yml is generated by executing script/rails generate mongo_mapper:config, and it looks like following: defaults: &defaults host: 127.0.0.1 port: 27017 development: <<: *defaults database: tc_web_development test: <<: *defaults database: tc_web_test From the config file we can see the objects development and test should both have a database field. But when it is parsed and loaded in config/initializers/mongo.db, config = YAML::load(File.read(Rails.root.join('config/mongo.yml'))) puts config.inspect MongoMapper.setup(config, Rails.env) the strange thing comes: the output of puts config.inspect is {"defaults"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}, "development"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}, "test"=>{"host"=>"127.0.0.1", "port"=>27017}} which does not contain database attribute. • Problems with string parameter insertion into prepared statement

  Hi, I have a database running on an MS SQL Server. My application communicates via JDBC and ODBC with it. Now I try to use prepared statements. When I insert a numeric (Long) parameter everything works fine. When I insert a string parameter it does not work. There is no error message, but an empty result set. WHERE column LIKE ('%' + ? + '%') --inserted "test" -> empty result set WHERE column LIKE ? --inserted "%test%" -> empty result set WHERE column = ? --inserted "test" -> works But I need the LIKE functionality. When I insert the same string directly into the query string (not as a prepared statement parameter) it runs fine. WHERE column LIKE '%test%' It looks a little bit like double quoting for me, but I never used quotes inside a string. I use preparedStatement.setString(int index, String x) for insertion. What is causing this problem? How can I fix it? Thanks in advance.

  I've tried to use id to create duck typing in objective-c. The concept looks fine in theory but failed in practice. I was unable to use any parameters in my methods. The methods were called but parameters were wrong. I was getting BAD_ACESS for objects and random values for primitives. I've attached a simple example below. The question: Does any one knows why the methods parameters are wrong? What is happening under the hood of the objective-c? Note: I'm interest in the details. I know how to make the example below work. An example: I've created a simple class Test that is passed to an other class using property id test. @implementation Test - (void) aSampleMethodWithFloat:(float) f andInt: (int) i { NSLog(@"Parameters: %f, %i\n", f, i); } @end Then in the class the following loop is executed: for (float f=0.0f; f < 100.0f ; f += 0.3f) { [self.test aSampleMethodWithOneFloatParameter: f]; // warning: no method found. } Here is the output that I'm getting. • Strange behavior with Javascript's __defineSetter__

  I have a large project in which I need to intercept assignments to things like element.src, element.href, element.style, etc. I figured out to do this with defineSetter, but it is behaving very strangely (using Chrome 8.0.552.231) An example: var attribs = ["href", "src", "background", "action", "onblur", "style", "onchange", "onclick", "ondblclick", "onerror", "onfocus", "onkeydown", "onkeypress", "onkeyup", "onmousedown", "onmousemove", "onmouseover", "onmouseup", "onresize", "onselect", "onunload"]; for(a = 0; a < attribs.length; a++) { var attrib_name = attribs[a]; var func = new Function("attrib_value", "this.setAttribute(\"" + attrib_name + "\", attrib_value.toUpperCase());"); HTMLElement.prototype.__defineSetter__(attrib_name, func); } What this code should do is whenever common element attribute in attribs is assigned, it uses setAttribute() to set a uppercased version of that attribute. For some very strange reason, the setter works for only ~1/3 of the assignments. For example with element.src = "test" the new src is "TEST", like it should be however with element.href = "test" the new href is "test", not uppercase then even when I try element.__lookupSetter__("href"), it returns the proper, uppercasing setter the strangest thing is different variables are intercepted properly between Chrome and Firefox help!!

• Can't log in with a valid password using Authlogic and Ruby on Rails?

  We support a bit of an unusual scheme. We don't require a password on User creation, and use password_resets to add a password to the user later, on demand. The problem is, once a password is created, the console indicates the password is valid: user.valid_password? 'test' = true but in my UserSessions controller, @user_session.save returns false using the same password. What am I not seeing? • Still no external sound after installing ubuntu 10.04

  As suggested I upgraded. Same as before except now not even the speaker control in the application bar. Please help. Background: I have Ubuntu 9.10. Headphones appear to work fine. External speakers - nothing. There are so many sound preferences I have no idea what or which combination. Went to terminal and ran alsamixer which seems to recognize my sound card, though the driver is not listed in System Administration Hardware Drivers; the only driver listed is my graphics card. Setup: I have a Dell 8250. Speakers are plugged into the SB live card. Woofer and 2 speakers using transformer.

• Installing additional printer drivers (x86) on Windows 7 (x64)

  I've successfully installed Windows 7 (x64) and drivers for my Canon MP510, and have no problem printing with this setup. There is another PC in the network running XP SP3, and I want to share the printer so that users of that PC can also print. On W7 I have the option of installing additional printer drivers for other system architectures (Itanium and x86). I've downloaded the most current 32-bit drivers for the printer, but every time I direct the install dialog to the folder containing the drivers, I get the following error message: Selected printer driver not found The specified location does not contain the driver Canon Inkjet MP510 Printer for the requested processor architecture. Retry Cancel I'm stumped. I'm absolutely certain that the specified location actually does contain the correct drivers; I've even installed them on the XP system. I've tried everything I can think of. What am I overlooking?

• jQuery Form plugin - no data from file upload?

  I've been struggling a bit with the jQuery Form plugin. I want to create a file upload form that posts the data (JSON, from the chosen file) into a REST service exposed by a servlet. The URL for the POST is calculated from what the user chooses in a SELECT dropdown. When the upload is complete, I want to notify the user immediately, AJAX-style. The problem is that the POST header has a Content-Length of 0 and contains no data. • HDMI and DVI connected monitors not in dual view on Windows 7 (Intel onboard Gigabyte)

  I have a HDMI to DVI cable which is connected to one monitor (HDMI is on PC side) and DVI-DVI connected to other monitor. This seems to work up until the system is fully loaded (the startup logo animation is shown on two screens). When and after I log in only one monitor is active (HDMI-DVI). I'm also unable to detect the other monitor (DVI-DVI). Any ideas what might be wrong with the setup? Also when I uninstall the Intel Graphics driver both screens are on, but only duplication works. GA-Z68A-D3H-B3, Intel Z68 Chipset, with fresh VGA driver (15.26.1.64.2618).

• Sound card doesn't work and yet does.

  I have a really weird one tonight. Today we had a LAN party and all of a sudden the sound on a couple PC's stopped working for programs like the games, windows media player, etc. However, when errors would popup (like trying to change the volume settings) you would here the default error chime. Restarting the computers you would here the logoff-login sounds and after a restart the sound would work for a bit in both games and apps and then suddenly stop. Restarting also didn't always fix the problem. I can't figure this out. If the sound card/driver didn't work then how could we hear sounds from the windows sound scheme? No sound with VLC, windows media player, youtube, games, nothing. The only thing I can figure out is that this is a bad game crashing the primary driver or some kind of weird virus these PC's might have picked up.

• Windows (7 & Vista) laptop monitor does not come back after closing lid

  I'm experiencing an issue with Windows Vista (and now Windows 7) with my laptop. When I close the laptop lid the monitor goes blank but will not come back on after I re-open the laptop. The screen stays blank and nothing that I do will get it to come back. The laptop is an HP DV9000 series. Has anyone else ran into this issue? One of the solutions I've seen online is to go into the device manager and replace the lid driver with something nonsensical (the website suggested pointing the driver at the sound recorder). This does solve the problem by disabling the lid but doesn't really resolve the root issue. I'm asking if anyone has any method I can use to debug what's going on. How do I tell if it is an operating system issue vs. a malfunction within the lid itself. I'd actually like the lid to function as it's meant to. Thank you!

• Memory release from local variable in javascript

  Quick question. I have a js function which gets called on the page every few seconds. It's an ajax update thing. Being a function, I declare local variables. I don't want to use closures or global variables for various reasons. I'd never considered this, but do I need to release/clear the variables at the end of the function to release memory or will js do this for me automatically ? Thanks

• Memory Leak with jQuery UI inside UpdatePanel in ie7

  I have a fairly complex asp.net page based on UpdatePanels and jQuery UI. Unfortunately, when the panels update, the jQuery UI widgets leak memory like crazy in ie7, even if I manually 'destroy' them. Does anyone know a technique/patch to prevent these leaks? I've created a simple example page with a slider inside an UpdatePanel.
