• Can I upgrade the CPU in my Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop?

Can you guys help me out with a couple of questions, please? What CPUs can I choose from? (I think it's only the Core2Duo line, but it should be enough for an upgrade) Can I use a 64-bit CPU? Can I use a CPU with a higher FSB than 667 MHz? Do I have to worry about additional cooling, or is it enough to check for similar voltage/TDP values? Thank you!

• X11 performance problem after upgrading from Centos3 to Centos5 with an ATI Rage XL

  After upgrading a computer from Centos3 to Centos5 an application that does a lot of scrolling took a very high performance hit. top tells me that X is using a lot of CPU and that was not happening before. The machine has an ATI Rage XL with 8MB and X is using the ati driver as there is no proprietary ATI driver for this board on linux. • MultiPath configuration on RHEL5 and Clariion CX-300

  I have problem with discovering my FC-connected CX-300 storage. Frankly speaking I'm complete novice in FibreChannel, so step by step explanation would be appreciated. My configuration consist of two IBM HS20 blades with RHEL5.4 on board and 2x Qlogic ISP2422-based 4Gb Fibre Channel HBAs on each blade. As a FC switch there are two Brocades built in BladeCenter Chassis, and finally there is EMC Clariion CX-300. CX300, and Brocade switches should be configured properly, because they were working fine with previous configuration, which main defference was RHEL3 instead RHEL5.4 Below there is my output from several usefull commands: #lspci | grep Fibre 06:01.0 FibreChannle: Qlogic Corp. • ATI radeon graphics card and screen freeze problem

  recently i upgrade my machine with new hardware component. my mother board is Gigabyte, processor Intel i3 3.6 ghz, ram 4 gb, graphics card ATI radeon 4350 1 GB. my OS installed is windows XP. when i am trying to play call of duty black ops then screen gets freeze and when i try to play other game like medal of honour then suddenly game closed suddenly after 15 or 20 minutes. i am not being able to find out the problem. whether i have problem in RAM or Graphics card. i asked few hardware person and one of them told me that i should installed windows 7 rather than windows xp. is it true. please help me to understand the problem and also tell me what should i do to fix this problem. please discuss in detail. thanks in advance. Update: yes i already install lates driver for ATI radeon 4350 but still the problem persist. do i need to install windows 7 instead of win xp because my processor is intel i3.

• Help building maya render node spec

  Hi there, I'm looking to build 4x Maya render slaves/nodes for a friend of mine when his project gets green lit. The project involves MentalRay and lots of glass. I'm unsure if the new i7's 9xx or 8xx with hyper threading will do any better than a core 2 quad of the same (or close enough) speed. Does hyper threading make a difference to Maya or is it more performance per core based? I'm sure he's prefer I'd build another render node than pay for a bleeding edge CPU that only adds fractionly more GHz. -- The rest of the spec so far: 4Gb - 8Gb ram 64 bit OS: Probably Windows 7 (I know Linux is free, but want to build something my friend can support himself as easily as he supports his own workstation) 1TB HDD to hold textures, Maya files and renders which will be copied to central storage later Mobo with on-board video, gigabit NIC 500 - 650 watt PSU Desktop case something like a: Cooler Master ATCS 840 The machines will sold afterwards if necessary. -- If anyone has had experience in Maya and has done any tests with the new CPUs vs. the older ones I'd really appreciate your input.

• webserver horrible slow, sometimes incredible fast

  i am running a small community ( 6000+ Members ) on a non-virtual 64-bit ubuntu 11.04 system. I am not a Linux-pro, not even advanced, i just tried to setup a webserver, which does nothing special actually. Delivering some dynamic PHP and RoR websites is its task. So it might be that my configuration files do look horrible bad. Also, i might use the wrong vocabulary, so in doubt, please ask. Having a current all-time record of 520 registered users (board-accounts, no system-users) online at same time, average server-load is about 2.0 - 5.0. Meantime (~250 users) average server load value is at about 0.4 - 0.8, sometimes, on some expensive searches a bit higher. everything fine. From time to time however, the load increases up to 120 (120.0, not 12.0 ;) ). In this time, its hard to even connect via SSH, but when i reach the server, and use top/htop/iotop to see whats happening, i cannot identify any process causing high CPU load. iotop tells me about a current reading/writing speed of about approx. 70kb/s, which is quite equal to power-off i think. Memory-Usage is max. at ~ 12GB of 16GB, so swap remains empty. now the odd (at least for me:) waiting some minutes ( since i always get a bit into a panic when this happens, it feels like 5 minutes, but i suppose its more like 20-30 minutes) and the server is back to normal. everything continues as normal. another odd fact: when i run hdparm -tT /dev/sda, i get answer like: /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 7180 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3591.13 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 348 MB in 3.02 seconds = 115.41 MB/sec when i run the same command while the server is "frozen", the answer is like /dev/sda: <- takes about 5 minutes until this line appears Timing cached reads: 7180 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3591.13 MB/sec <- 5 more minutes Timing buffered disk reads: 348 MB in 3.02 seconds = 115.41 MB/sec <- another 5 minutes so the values are the same, but the quoted time is completely wrong. using time command as prefix also tells me that ~ 15 minutes were used. I searched in dmesg, /var/log/[messages|syslog] - nothing found. /var/log/errors however tells me that: Jul 4 20:28:30 localhost kernel: [19080.671415] INFO: task php5-fpm:27728 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Jul 4 20:28:30 localhost kernel: [19080.671419] "echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. multiple times. now that message does tell me that php5-fpm task was blocked or did block ? - but not if that is the cause or just one of the results of that "freeze". Anyone? to cut the long story short, i dont know where even to start analyzing. So if you can give me any advice by looking at following specs and configs, or ask me to provide more information, i`d be glad. It still makes me wonder, why those problems even appear, since 250 users a time is not such a high amount, right? So my questions: whats wrong and how to fix? ;) or: what information can i provide to make the situation more clear? can you point at some critical bad configuration-line which i should consider to catch up in the documentation? are there any tools i can run to see some possible bottlenecks? any further advice? • How do multiple displays work on a AMD 785G / ATI HD 4200 motherboard?

  I just ordered a ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO which has the AMD 785G chipset and HD4200 integrated graphic. The board has VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs. I'm wondering how many outputs I can run at once, and from what connectors? My guess is that I can only use the VGA, and either the DVI or the HDMI in a dual setup. But not the HDMI and the DVI at the same time. Is this correct? If I have devices plugged into both the HDMI and the DVI ports is there a way to choose between which port I want to use? I have a dual 19" monitor setup, as well as a LCD TV. I'd like to run the VGA and the DVI into my two monitors, and then the HDMI to my TV. Then when I want to watch something on the TV I'd like to be able to switch over from the DVI to the HDMI. Is this possible with out crawling under my desk and unplugging/plugging things in? Update I found the following in the manual off ASUS's website, which confirms my original suspicion that HDMI and DVI can't be used at the same time. But I'd still like to know if it's possible through software to switch between using the HDMI and DVI.

• NVidia ION and /dev/mapper/nvidia_... issues.

  I have an NVidia ION board with 4 SATA ports and want to use that to run a Linux Server (CentOS 5.4). I first hooed up 3 HDs (that will be a RAID5 array) and a forth small boot HD. I first started to use the onboard RAID capability but that does not work correctly under Linux: the raid capacity is not a real RAID but uses lvm to define some arays. After setting the BIOS back to normal SATA mode and whiping the HDs, the first boot harddisk (/dev/sda) is seen as /dev/sda BEFORE mounting and after mounting as /dev/mapper/nvidia_. CentOS is unable to install on it (and grub is not installable on it either). So somehow the harddisk is still seen as if it belongs to some lvm volume. I tried to clean out the HD by issuing a few dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda commands to wipe the starting cylinders and final cylinders but to no avail. Did anyone see this problem and did anyone find a solution? UPDATE When I create only a single ext3 partition on the first HD (/dev/mapper/nvidia_...) no LVM partitions are seen and I can boot from /dev/mapper/nvidia_.... Now the next step is to see how I can get rid of this folly.

• I cannot format my PC

  I have a Toshiba Satellite(1) l505 6gb RAM, 6.00GB hard disk.Initially I have problem with another satellite(2) I had (mother board problem). I took my Laptop to a technician and cost a lot of money (almost as much as buying new one). So, since I have HDD problems with the first one(1) I decided to use the hard disk of the other one(2). I formatted the HDD and erased the partitions it had into 1 partition (or no partition). The problem is that when I try to format with the SO CD, in the screen, where I have to decide in which partition I want to install the SO, the only one option I have says "unallocated partition and I receive this message "Windows cannot install the SO in this partition, run files do not existed or maybe corrupted" When I erased the disk with Parted Magic, Did I erased any files needed for running the installing disk? I don't know. Is it possible to fixed or reinstate the disk to install the OS? By the way, I checked the disk physical health with Parted Magic, and it is OK. One more thing when I erased the disc to 0, I used the safety option offered by the Parted Magic.Need help please.

Every week or two weeks the site begins running slower - and I see queries taking longer and longer to complete in SQL. What's nice is that even if your CPU is pegged at 100% for some reason and Activity Monitor is refusing to load (I'm sure some of you have been there) this query still returns and you can see what query is killing your DB. When I run this, or Activity Monitor during the times that SQL has begun to slow down I don't see any specific queries causing the issue - they are ALL running slower across the board. If I restart the MS SQL Service then everything is fine, it speeds right up - for a week or two until it happens again. Nothing that I can think of has changed, but this just started a few months ago... Ideas? --Added Please note that when this database slowdown happens it doesn't matter if we are getting 100K page views an hour (busier time of day) or 10K page views an hour (slow time) the queries all take a longer time to complete than normal. The server isn't really under stress - the CPU isn't high, the disk usage doesn't seem to be out of control... it feels like index fragmentation or something of the sort but that doesn't seem to be the case. As far as pasting results of the query I pasted above I really can't do that. The Query above lists the login of the user performing the task, the entire query, etc etc.. and I'd really not like to hand out the names of my databases, tables, columns and the logins online :)... I can tell you that the queries running at that time are normal, standard queries for our site that run all the time, nothing out of the norm.

• ASUS P8B WS - Endless Reboots

  I am running a Intel XEON 1245 with 4GBx2 Kingston Memory ECC Unbuffered DDR3 on an ASUS P8B WS motherboard. BIOS Version 0904 x64. This system is a little over a month old. It is running Ubuntu 11.10. This evening I found the machine turned off. When I tried to restart it, it would POST and stop at the GRUB screen. When I selected Ubuntu and hit enter within 2-3 seconds the would shutdown and restart. If I stayed at the GRUB screen and did nothing the system would not cut out. I tried booting off a USB stick and again 2-3 seconds after selecting 'Try Ubuntu without Installing' the machine will cut power and reboot. Things I have tried so far: Resetting the BIOS using the on board jumper Resetting the BIOS settings to default Disconnecting all external hardware - except keyboard & monitor Booting with 1 stick of RAM - I tried different single sticks Ensured that onboard EPU and GPU boost switches are in the off position. I am running a Memtest86 right now and it has been running for 38+ minutes. This is not an OS problem or an overheating issue (I have a CoolerMaster HAF Case with 3 fans besides the CPU fan) I am at a loss as to what to try next. I think the BIOS is mis-configured somehow but I don't know what to look for.

• Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • Ubuntu 9.10 Only Sees 244 MB RAM, while BIOS and Windows Sees 1.5 GB

  I have 1.5 GB of RAM installed on an older Dell, Pentium 4. I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 and the system is only seeing 244 MB of RAM, even though there is 1.5 GB on the system. The BIOS sees all of it. I ran a Knoppix disc and it only saw 25 MB upon booting. I made no particular changes to the installation taht would affect this. I looked through the BIOS and the only setting I could see was the AGP aperture. Not even sure what this is. Anyone know where I went wrong? I also tried moving the memory modules around on the board. Booted with the 1 GB stick, still saw 244 MB. NOTE - This same system, except for the hard drive, had Windows XP running on it. The user who ran it said that the RAM was good and always showed 1.5 GB. • Plan Caching and Query Memory Part II (Hash Match) – When not to use stored procedure - Most common performance mistake SQL Server developers make.

  SQL Server estimates Memory requirement at compile time, when stored procedure or other plan caching mechanisms like sp_executesql or prepared statement are used, the memory requirement is estimated based on first set of execution parameters. This is a common reason for spill over tempdb and hence poor performance. Common memory allocating queries are that perform Sort and do Hash Match operations like Hash Join or Hash Aggregation or Hash Union. This article covers Hash Match operations with examples. It is recommended to read Plan Caching and Query Memory Part I before this article which covers an introduction and Query memory for Sort. In most cases it is cheaper to pay for the compilation cost of dynamic queries than huge cost for spill over tempdb, unless memory requirement for a query does not change significantly based on predicates.   This article covers underestimation / overestimation of memory for Hash Match operation. Plan Caching and Query Memory Part I covers underestimation / overestimation for Sort. It is important to note that underestimation of memory for Sort and Hash Match operations lead to spill over tempdb and hence negatively impact performance. Overestimation of memory affects the memory needs of other concurrently executing queries. To observe Hash Warning, enable 'Hash Warning' in SQL Profiler under Events 'Errors and Warnings'.   Now let’s execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ – which will select 99% of data. -Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 2922 ms to complete.   The stored procedure was granted 6704 KB based on 8000 rows being estimated.    The estimated number of rows, 8000 is way different from the actual number of rows 792000 because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is ‘WA’ in our case. This underestimation will lead to spill over tempdb, resulting in poor performance.   There was Hash Warning (Recursion) in SQL Profiler. To observe Hash Warning, enable 'Hash Warning' in SQL Profiler under Events 'Errors and Warnings'.   Let’s recompile the stored procedure and then let’s first execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’.  In a production instance it is not advisable to use sp_recompile instead one should use DBCC FREEPROCCACHE (plan_handle). This is due to locking issues involved with sp_recompile, refer to our webcasts, www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts for further details.   exec sp_recompile CustomersByState go --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  Now the stored procedure took only 1046 ms instead of 2922 ms.   The stored procedure was granted 146752 KB of memory. The estimated number of rows, 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000. Better performance of this stored procedure execution is due to better estimation of memory and avoiding spill over tempdb.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler.   Now let’s execute the stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go  The stored procedure took 351 ms to complete, higher than the previous execution time of 294 ms.    This stored procedure was granted more memory (146752 KB) than necessary (6704 KB) based on parameter value ‘NY’ for estimation (792000 rows) instead of parameter value ‘WA’ for estimation (8000 rows). This is because the estimation is based on the first set of parameter value supplied to the stored procedure which is ‘NY’ in this case. This overestimation leads to poor performance of this Hash Match operation, it might also affect the performance of other concurrently executing queries requiring memory and hence overestimation is not recommended.     The estimated number of rows, 792000 is much more than the actual number of rows of 8000.  Intermediate Summary: This issue can be avoided by not caching the plan for memory allocating queries. Other possibility is to use recompile hint or optimize for hint to allocate memory for predefined data range.Let’s recreate the stored procedure with recompile hint. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByState go create proc CustomersByState @State char(2) as begin declare @CustomerID int select @CustomerID = e.CustomerID from Customers e inner join CustomersState es on (e.CustomerID = es.CustomerID) where es.State = @State option (maxdop 1, recompile) end go  Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with parameter value ‘WA’ and then with parameter value ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 297 ms and 1102 ms in line with previous optimal execution times.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’ has good estimation like before.   Estimated number of rows of 8000 is similar to actual number of rows of 8000.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ also has good estimation and memory grant like before because the stored procedure was recompiled with current set of parameter values.  Estimated number of rows of 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000.    The compilation time and compilation CPU of 1 ms is not expensive in this case compared to the performance benefit.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler.   Let’s recreate the stored procedure with optimize for hint of ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com drop proc CustomersByState go create proc CustomersByState @State char(2) as begin declare @CustomerID int select @CustomerID = e.CustomerID from Customers e inner join CustomersState es on (e.CustomerID = es.CustomerID) where es.State = @State option (maxdop 1, optimize for (@State = 'NY')) end go  Let’s execute the stored procedure initially with parameter value ‘WA’ and then with parameter value ‘NY’. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com exec CustomersByState 'WA' go exec CustomersByState 'NY' go  The stored procedure took 353 ms with parameter value ‘WA’, this is much slower than the optimal execution time of 294 ms we observed previously. This is because of overestimation of memory. The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ has optimal execution time like before.   The stored procedure with parameter value ‘WA’ has overestimation of rows because of optimize for hint value of ‘NY’.   Unlike before, more memory was estimated to this stored procedure based on optimize for hint value ‘NY’.    The stored procedure with parameter value ‘NY’ has good estimation because of optimize for hint value of ‘NY’. Estimated number of rows of 792000 is similar to actual number of rows of 792000.   Optimal amount memory was estimated to this stored procedure based on optimize for hint value ‘NY’.   There was no Hash Warning in SQL Profiler.   This article covers underestimation / overestimation of memory for Hash Match operation. It is important to note that underestimation of memory for Sort and Hash Match operations lead to spill over tempdb and hence negatively impact performance. In addition, it is important to note, with Hash Match operations, overestimation of memory can actually lead to poor performance.   Summary: Cached plan might lead to underestimation or overestimation of memory because the memory is estimated based on first set of execution parameters. It is recommended not to cache the plan if the amount of memory required to execute the stored procedure has a wide range of possibilities. One can mitigate this by using recompile hint, but that will lead to compilation overhead. However, in most cases it might be ok to pay for compilation rather than spilling sort over tempdb which could be very expensive compared to compilation cost. The other possibility is to use optimize for hint, but in case one sorts more data than hinted by optimize for hint, this will still lead to spill. On the other side there is also the possibility of overestimation leading to unnecessary memory issues for other concurrently executing queries. In case of Hash Match operations, this overestimation of memory might lead to poor performance. When the values used in optimize for hint are archived from the database, the estimation will be wrong leading to worst performance, so one has to exercise caution before using optimize for hint, recompile hint is better in this case.   I explain these concepts with detailed examples in my webcasts (www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts), I recommend you to watch them.
