So, the idea of this is that when I view the transformed XML I can immediately note which elements precede what. What's your take on this?

• Parallel processing from a command queue on Linux (bash, python, ruby... whatever)

  I have a list/queue of 200 commands that I need to run in a shell on a Linux server. I only want to have a maximum of 10 processes running (from the queue) at once. Some processes will take a few seconds to complete, other processes will take much longer. When a process finishes I want the next command to be "popped" from the queue and executed. Does anyone have code to solve this problem? Further elaboration: There's 200 pieces of work that need to be done, in a queue of some sort. I want to have at most 10 pieces of work going on at once. When a thread finishes a piece of work it should ask the queue for the next piece of work. If there's no more work in the queue, the thread should die. When all the threads have died it means all the work has been done. The actual problem I'm trying to solve is using imapsync to synchronize 200 mailboxes from an old mail server to a new mail server. Some users have large mailboxes and take a long time tto sync, others have very small mailboxes and sync quickly.

• How to effectively execute this cron job?

  I have a table with 200 rows. I'm running a cron job every 10 minutes to perform some kind of insert/update operation on the table. The operation needs to be performed only on 5 rows at a time every time the cron job runs. So in first 10 mins records 1-5 are updated, records 5-10 in the 20th minute and so on. When the cron job runs for the 20th time, all the records in the table would have been updated exactly once. This is what is to be achieved at least. And the next cron job should repeat the process again. The problem: is that, every time a cron job runs, the insert/update operation should be performed on N rows (not just 5 rows). So, if N is 100, all records would've been updated by just 2 cron jobs. And the next cron job would repeat the process again. Here's an example: This is the table I currently have (200 records). • IE AJAX/Jquery issue - redirecting to new page instead of loading it into a div

In IE (tested 7 and 8) when I click Submit it redirects the page to add_item.php rather than loading it into the #items div. I tried adding event.preventDefault(); to the end of the function but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Whenever they click on a posting, the posting's id gets stored in a cookie and displays it in the recent view box. • Refactoring. Your way to reduce code complexity of big class with big methods

  I have a legacy class that is rahter complex to maintain: class OldClass { method1(arg1, arg2) { ... 200 lines of code ... } method2(arg1) { ... 200 lines of code ... } ... method20(arg1, arg2, arg3) { ... 200 lines of code ... } } methods are huge, unstructured and repetitive (developer loved copy/paste aprroach). I want to split each method into 3-5 small functions, whith one pulic method and several helpers. What will you suggest? Several ideas come to my mind: Add several private helper methods to each method and join them in #region (straight-forward refactoring) Use Command pattern (one command class per OldClass method in a separate file). Create helper static class per method with one public method & several private helper methods. OldClass methods delegate implementation to appropriate static class (very similiar to commands). ?   I'm helping someone clean up a malware infection on a site and I'm having a difficult time correctly matching some strings in sed so I can create a script to mass search and replace / remove it.   I have an HTML page where I want to refresh a lot of images every 30 seconds after the HTML page has been downloaded. I understand how to do this with Jquery and a single image, but I want to use about 200 custom urls to determine the current image to display for over 200 images. I need to find an efficient way to have jquery call the custom url associated with each image to download the url for the needed image as it changes, and then update the image in the page when it changes. Current hyperlink example to demonstrate the custom urls. <A href="/urlThatReturnsCurrentImageURL/1234/4567">link to url for image</A> Each custom url will return an image tag like this (or any other text that makes this simpler for jquery) <img src="/static/someImage.jpg"> What is the simplest way to have jquery call the custom url for each image to download the image url, image html, or some other text that jquery can use to download the right image every 30 seconds? Please keep in mind that I will have about 200 of these on a page.

• In C, when do structure names have to be included in structure initializations and definitions?

  I'm reading The C Programming Language by K&R and in the section on structures I came across these code snippets: struct maxpt = { 320, 200 }; and /* addpoints: add two points */ struct addpoint(struct point p1, struct point p2) { p1.x += p2.x; p1.y += p2.y; return p1; } In the first case, it looks like it's assigning the values 320 and 200 to the members of the variable maxpt. But I noticed the name of the struct type is missing (shouldn't it be "struct struct_name maxpt = {320, 200}"? In the second case, the function return type is just "struct" and not "struct name_of_struct". I don't get why they don't include the struct names - how does it know what particular type of structure it's dealing with? My confusion is compounded by the fact that in previous snippets they do include the structure name, such as in the return type for the following function, where it's "struct point" and not just "struct". Why do they include the name in some cases and not in others? /* makepoint: make a point from x and y components */ struct point makepoint(int x, int y) { struct point temp; temp.x = x; temp.y = y; return temp; }

  I have a float value between 0 and 1. I need to convert it with -120 to 80. To do this, first I multiply with 200 after 120 subtract. When subtract is made I had rounding error. Let's look my example. float val = 0.6050f; val *= 200.f; Now val is 121.0 as I expected. val -= 120.0f; Now val is 0.99999992 I thought maybe I can avoid this problem with multiplication and division. float val = 0.6050f; val *= 200.f; val *= 100.f; val -= 12000.0f; val /= 100.f; But it didn't help. I have still 0.99 on my hand. Is there a solution for it? Edit: After with detailed logging, I understand there is no problem with this part of code. Before my log shows me "0.605", after I had detailed log and I saw "0.60499995946884155273437500000000000000000000000000" the problem is in different place.

• How do you keep code with continuations/callbacks readable?

  Summary: Are there some well-established best-practice patterns that I can follow to keep my code readable in spite of using asynchronous code and callbacks? I'm using a JavaScript library that does a lot of stuff asynchronously and heavily relies on callbacks. It seems that writing a simple "load A, load B, ..." method becomes quite complicated and hard to follow using this pattern. Let me give a (contrived) example. Let's say I want to load a bunch of images (asynchronously) from a remote web server. In C#/async, I'd write something like this: disableStartButton(); foreach (myData in myRepository) { var result = await LoadImageAsync("http://my/server/GetImage?" + myData.Id); if (result.Success) { myData.Image = result.Data; } else { write("error loading Image " + myData.Id); return; } } write("success"); enableStartButton(); The code layout follows the "flow of events": First, the start button is disabled, then the images are loaded (await ensures that the UI stays responsive) and then the start button is enabled again. I'm sure that I'm not the first one to encounter this problem, so my question is: Are there some well-established best-practice patterns that I can follow to keep my code readable in spite of using asynchronous code and callbacks?

• Home networking problem between power line communication and Ethernet

  My network runs through the electrical wiring of the house and is organised as such: Groundfloor: an ADSL+network switch, using DHCP (address : 172.19.3.1) (Mac) PCs connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (1 per PC) First Floor: 1 switch (8 ports) connected via an electrical adapter (model: D-Link DHP-200) (address unknown) 2 Mac PCs connected (via RJ45 network wires) to that router using DHCP The Problem On the first floor, file tranfers between PCs are fast and perfect. But if I try to transfer files from or to a computer on the ground floor, the speed is slow and eventually the transfer dies out. The Question So I suspect the 1st floor switch is creating some kind of barrier (firewall?) preventing external PCs from accessing the PCs it is connected to? Am I right and if so, how could I disable that barrier?
