• What enterprise architecture tools support DoDAF 2.0?

  What tools best support the DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) Version 2.0, including support for transfer of the architecture data in accordance with the DoDAF Meta Model (DM2) Physical Exchange Specification (PES)? My initial research found that MagicDraw and Casewise claim support for version 2.0; and several other tools have support for earlier (or unspecified) DoDAF/MoDAF versions including Sparx Enterprise Architect, Troux, IDS Scheer ARIS, Artisan Studio and Rational System Architect. Experiences with any enterprise architecture tools and DoDAF 2.0 would be appreciated. The immediate need is for Data and Information Viewpoint models (DIV-1, DIV-2/OV-7, DIV-3/SV-11), but models in the other Viewpoints will be developed. Thanks -

• Books about Advanced WPF control building

  Hello. I'm really interested in learning really advanced features of WPF to learn how to create advanced controls, but apparently I'm running out of resources, and possibly, imagination. I have these 4 books: WPF Control Development Unleashed Experiences Pro WPF 2008 Presentation Professionals Programming WPF Chris Sells WPF in Action Visual Studio 2008 One finished, two other half way, the other one just started. I sort of expected more from the "WPF Control Development Unleashed" one. Anyway, do you know any more books about advanced WPF features, and control building? Or even about how WPF works internally. Let me know what are your favorite WPF books, maybe I've overlooked some of them. Thanks!

• Alternative to pjax/djax and ajaxy

  I was evaluating jQuery plugins to make a Drupal 7 site using AJAX everywhere. I have been using ajaxy. But it does not seem to be very actively maintained. Two possible solutions I have found are pjax and djax. What are your experiences with those plugins? What other plugins do you know that do similar functionality? Very important features are SEO friendliness (preferably using pushState so no hash is being used. Hashes are used as a fallback for not supported browsers.). And also has to be very flexible since it has to wirk with Drupal's HTML structure.

• jquery ajax request is sent BEFORE beforeSend

  Hi all, had anyone the same experiences with jquery ajax() and the beforeSend property??? And even better... any advice how to fix this problem ??? THX ;-) Actually what i am doing is reading from the database with an ajax call before i wanna sent the new data to the database via ajax (I deed to get to the last page of all comments). What happens is that beforeSend retrieves the data WITH the data which should be sent afterwards?!?! • Recommendation for high performance WPF Chart

  We're working on a WPF-based desktop application that charts financial markets information (candlestick charts, overlayed indicator curves, volume, etc). The charts are displayed in real-time with responses to market ticks being shown in real-time (updating one to two times per second is probably a reasonable display refresh policy). We've been looking for a software package (commercial is fine by us) that has the capability of displaying these charts. Additionally, we'd like to have an approach that can render the initial amount of data in a reasonable timeframe (give or take 100-200ms from the time we hand the data over to a complete render on screen). Also we view multiple charts (5-10) simultaneously so a solution that chews up 50% of my CPU to display one chart really isn't going to work well. Has anyone had any good experiences with charting controls. We've had to hand roll the last few charts we've done and I'd prefer not to do it again. Solutions that can make use of the GPU to minimize CPU utilization would be nice as well.

  I'm working on stimulanting projects at my job. I like it. I like programming! I have accumulated several years of experience now. Sometime happens I develop other projects (even more stimulant of my main job). Some more money cannot hurts! The problem is that my free time has decreased a lot, leading me to develop until late evening. I usually program each day (I like to develop my own projects, even if only a few lines at a time). But it is one thing to plan for my pleasure, it is one thing to plan for business. So, my question is how to balance free time with these additional jobs? What experiences do you have? How much you can develop for long time (in a medium interval, say, weeks)? Every thought is welcome!

  We are considering Microsoft DSL toolkit for creating some abstract designers. I already did some POCs, but would like to get some opinions on the same. Any one here to share their experiences working with Microsoft DSL Toolkit and T4? Also, any pointers to open source DSL projects will help - Eg. Microsoft Service Factory modeling edition is heavily relying on DSL toolkit. As OSLO/Quadrant will take some time to get released, I think the only option we have is to rely on Microsoft DSL designer.   Hi, Has anybody succeeded in developing a bluetooth application on the iPhone that prints to a Bluetooth printer? I have been investigating the feasibility of developing an iPhone application that could print to a Bluetooth-enabled printer. I've gone through the most of the postings in this thread and was confused by the mail exchanges. As per my analysis: Gamekit - can be used for bluetooth connectivity between iPhones and IPods ONLY Bonjour - can be used for wi-fi connectivity between iPhones/IPods and bonjour-enabled printer We can use an external accessory to connect to a third party Bluetooth-enabled printer provided the 3rd-party printer complies with the necessary regulations from Apple (registering for either “Made for iPod”/ “Works with iPhone”, and also customizing their printer with specific hardware/software, etc.) Could someone please share their experiences?

• Jdeveloper vs java/j2ee/js+extjs ?

  Hi All, i am new to the web development environment, having came from a unix/c environment. i've been recently asked to create a web app, which i thought would require postgresql, java/j2ee, and javascript for the client interface. as i had wanted a nicer gui, i've been reading up on extjs, which looks really nice to me. a colleague mentioned that the time needed time needed to learn all these various pieces is time consuming, and Jdeveloper seems to provide most of what we'd need (i was shown a demo, which appears to be able to generate some nice web interfaces). what are the pros and cons with the different approaches ? some i can think of: - jdeveloper is an integrated ide, which creates UI easily, tightly integrated with database. (pro) - jdeveloper will be heavier? (con) - wizard generated code may be harder to refactor ? I'm currently using lambdaprobe on Tomcat 5.5.x, but it seems that is no more developed (or not? the site lambdaprobe.org is always down for me...). Has someone good experiences to share? In lambdaprobe there are some info available only if tomcat is instrumented with JMX. Well, JMX is something of strange and mysterious for me. Is a good solution in a production server? It's worth to spend my (little) time to learn it?

  I am looking for a lightweight php framework with the following qualifications: ability to write my own sql queries ( i simply don't trust CakePHP like method where the framework does your sql for you); ability to integrate Jquery easily; built-in templating, or relatively easy to introduce Smarty (or another templating engine) into it; MVC; fast Any advice/comparison? i have looked into CodeIgniter, Symfony and CakePHP so far. Symfony is slow, and CakePHP is too inaccessible ...so far my choice would be CodeIgniter. I played with it a bit, but i would like to hear more experiences. I am looking for a framework that will "enforce" organization of my app in a logical way - MVC seems like a great choice.

• Which web containers install themselves well as a Windows service?

  We have had a web application product for several years, and used Tomcat to deploy it under Windows as it registers itself as a Windows service so it starts and stops automatically. We may now happen to need more JEE facilitites than is provided by Tomcat (we are very tempted by the JEE 6 things in the container) so the question is which Open Source JEE containers works well as Windows services. Since Glassfish is the only JEE 6 implementation right now, it would be nice if it works well, but I'd like to hear experiences and not just what I can read from brochures. If not, what else do people use? EDIT: This goes for web containers too, and not just JEE containers. We will probably keep the necessary stack included until we find the right container and it gets JEE6 support. EDIT: I want this to work as distributed. I'm not interested in manually hacking wrappers etc., but want the installation process to handle the creation and removal of the service.

• Java Concurrency: CAS vs Locking

  Im currently reading the Book Java Concurrency in Practice. In the Chapter 15 they are speaking about the Nonblocking algorithms and the compare-and-swap (CAS) Method. It is written that the CAS perform much better than the Locking Methods. I want to ask the people which already worked with both of this concepts and would like to hear when you are preferring which of these concept? Is it really so much faster? Personally for me the usage of Locks is much clearer and easier to understand and maybe even better to maintain. (Please correct me if I am wrong). Should we really focus creating our concurrent code related on CAS than Locks to get a better performance boost or is sustainability a higher thing? I know there is maybe not a strict rule, when to use what. But I just would like to hear some opinions, experiences with the new concept of CAS.

I've been searching on SO & Google for a breakdown of the various View Engines available for ASP.NET MVC, but haven't found much more than simple high-level descriptions of what a view engine is. I'm not necessarily looking for "best" or "fastest" but rather some real world comparisons of advantages / disadvantages of the major players (e.g. the default WebFormViewEngine, MvcContrib View Engines, etc.) for various situations. I think this would be really helpful in determining if switching from the default engine would be advantageous for a given project or development group. Has anyone encountered such a comparison?

• I'm going to write 'Unit of Work', please help me find out all gimmicks

  Hi everybody, I'm going to write my own DAL in C#. I decided to use 'Unit of Work' pattern (next mentioned as uow) with request as a scope and Identity map stored in HttpContext.Items. I have right now question about implementing of CRUD methods. How/where are they implemented? Are they implemented in every single business class (as in active records pattern) or are implemented somehow in uow class (if so, how)? I also suppose that I need to use as the scope not just the request, but also the db connection. But how? Should I open the connection a the start of the request and close it on uow disposing? Every advice is strongly appreciated, especially Your "real world" experiences. Thank you all :)

  What's your choice? Do You have any suggestions and experience? I'm developing an application with Hibernate 3.5 and Spring 3.0 Pros: Good documentation Easy configuration and helpful logs Popularity - wide community Some extensions to JPA Some additional Tools - JBoss Tools for Eclipse, hbm2ddl, generating static metamodel etc... Cons: Bugs! (Sequences, collections etc...) Lots of reatures are doubled with "pure" Hibernate. There's a mess in legacy Hibernate and JPA annotations. I'm considering to switch to EclipseLink. What do You think ? Edit: I've tried EclipseLink and have very bad experiences. It seems like EclipseLink needs LoadTimeWeaver and likes to run on OSGi platform rather than simple Jetty or Tomcat environment. I just don't have time for all this configuration stuff.

  Hi, I have a ASP.NET MVC app that is using SQLite database through Entity Framework. Everything works on VS 2008's local development webserver. However, deploying the web app to my service provider causes this error: [ArgumentException: Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider. It may not be installed.] System.Data.Common.DbProviderFactories.GetFactory(String providerInvariantName) +1308959 System.Data.EntityClient.EntityConnection.GetFactory(String providerString) +35 Service provider has commented that they do not support SQLite. I had though that SQLite is independent of service provider's settings since it's App_Data deployable. Has anyone experiences of a succesfull Entity Framework + SQLite deployment? Cheers, -pom-

We have a set of tables and views that merely store some config data for embedded devices. this schema is change-prone and do not really required lots of logic, beyond some validation rules. so we considered using a RAD tool for maintaining these CRUDS. In first stage: Dynamic Data But the community size, books absence and the last modification dates of the MSDN articles (~July 2008) makes me want to hear your experiences. (actually DynamicData comes as a part of the ASP.Net MVC2 project) What has been your experience with Dynamic Data? And... What is your favorite ASP.Net RAD alternative? Why? • Inclusion Handling in MVC 2 / MVCContrib

  I'd like to improve my page by combining and minifying javascript and CSS files. Since MVCContrib already contains a project called IncludeHandling, I took a look at that which unfortunately left me with unanswered questions: There is quite a set of interfaces and objects involved in the process. Now I'm using Ninject.Mvc, but it seems that MvcContrib.IncludeHandling is using some additional (home-brewed?) DI? Can I work around this? Has anybody used this and can share some experiences? Secondly, advice that is often heard is to put static content on different domains so the request does not contain cookies and the like, making it much easier for the server to handle the request. But how can I combine this with automatic inclusion handling - isn't that necessarily served in the same application? EDIT: Figured that there is really just a single resolve call in the whole thing, i really wonder why they use DI for that... Thinking about a fork there...

  I do not find actual difference between these two J2EE server. From my past experience, I found out following: WL is evolving more faster than WAS. WL is more user friendly than WAS. To simply deploy a application in WAS, we need to go in deep and its difficult to find if u are new to it. I found out that WAS is slower in some machine than WL. I found out that Classloading is easier to understand and effective in WL than WAS Above all are my experiences but not actual facts. I want to know more in this respect. Please clear my doubts. If possible please provide each J2EE server's pros and cons. -Abhishek

• options for producing audio with GWT

  What options are there for producing audio in a GWT app? I'm thinking of making a simple game, but I'm disappointed to see that there's still not much progress on audio support directly in GWT (yes, I realize that's largely due to lack of underlying browser support; looking forward to HTML5!) This blog post says that "audio support in GWT is rapidly evolving", yet I don't see updates in over a year, at least not at that site. It seems these are the available options: GWT Voices GWT SoundManager GWT Sound GWT Incubator I believe most of these (all of them?) rely on Flash to produce audio. I'm most inclined to go with the GWT Incubator, as that's where features slated for inclusion in GWT get started, but I've no real recommendations to go on. I would appreciate hearing about your experiences with any of these libraries, thanks.
