• No wireless adapter in msi u200

  I have a MSi u200, and the weird thing was that I was using this normally before, then after a few minutes all of a sudden it couldn't find the wifi signal from my house. I did some troubleshooting and a bit of search in the control panel, and it seems like my hardware is missing. :( I can't even turn on the wireless light using Fn+F8, so my suspicions about the missing hardware strengthened. I tried searching for DIY fixes, but I found out that the wireless card is actually built-in deeper, unlike the RAM cards and the hard drive where you can either replace or add more cards. What do I do?? As of the moment, I can get connected to my wifi here at home using a wireless adapter via usb, and it's working. So my guess about the hardware problem seems correct. HELP!!! Thanks!

• High Availability Clustering and Virtualization

  I'm trying to understand how the various virtualization vendors (specifically Amazon EC2, but also VMware and Xen) enable software vendors to provide a real HA solution in the environment where the servers are virtualized. Specifically, if I'm running any HA application (exchange, databases, etc) I need to ensure that my redundant virtual "servers" aren't located on the same physical server. Using in-house virtualization solutions (VMware, Xen, etc) I can provision accordingly as well as check the virtual - physical arrangement. I could, however, accidentally "vmotion" to the same physical hardware. With EC2, I don't even have the ability at provision time to select different physical servers. Since their Cluster Compute Instances are 1 virtual server per physical server it seems to be the only way to guarantee I don't have a false sense of redundancy. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. What are others doing about this problem? If the vendors provided an API where I could get something as simple as a unique physical system identifier I could at least know if I'm going to have an issue. -Tim

• Synced audio ouput on multiple machines? VLC? hardware solutions?

  I'm wondering if there is any software or hardware solutions to synced audio or audio and video across multiple computers or devices on a network. I've seen Sonos, and it might be a good solution, but it's also a very expensive solution. I'd like to be able to play something with realtime audio output on one PC, but hear it on speakers throughout the house, being it the home theater receiver, or another computer in another room. I saw a solution using the apple iport express, but the latency was unacceptable for anything other than just music. I'd like to avoid running audio wires with baluns to a bunch of amplifiers scattered all over the place when I have cat5 run everywhere. Is anyone familiar with using this kind of process for whole home audio? The latency is a big deal for me, if I've got video attached to the sound (e.g. watching a hockey game)

• What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

  I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens. What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server?

• minimum required bandwidth for remote database server

  I want to build a small warehousing application for my company. We have a central warehouse which distributes to 8 sales points across the country. They insist on an in-house solution. I am thinking to setup a central mySQL db Linux server and have the branches connect to it to store sales. Queries to the db from the branches will be minimum, maybe 10 per hour. However I need all the branches to be able to store each sale data ( product ID, customer ID ) in the central db at peak time at most once every five minutes. My question is can I get away with simple 24mbps/768kbps DSL lines? If not what is the bandwith requirement? Can I rely on a load balancing router to combine additional lines if needed? Can you propose some server hardware specs?

• Move email off Small Business Server to Google Apps, retain other SBS functions?

  Recently, an in-house Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 was installed where I work. Unfortunately, our buildings have a bad electrical power supply and we suffer frequent outages. We have a large percentage of staff working off-site. Now when the power goes off here, everyone everywhere loses email functionality. I have been assigned to research the possibility of routing our email to Google Apps while maintaining LAN functions on the SBS. I haven't worked with Microsoft products for several years now, so do not know how SBS is structured. Can anyone here tell me if this is possible, or point me to good resources that explain our options?

• Windows failover cluster - virtual node with multiple Client Access Names

  I recently encountered a customer environment in which they had failover cluster where one of the virtual nodes had more than one 'Client Access Name' (i.e. more than one IP address and DNS name for the single virtual node). Long story short we had to modify our software to deal with this situation, but we want to recreate the situation in house to test it before releasing. I have been unable to locate any information about how or why you would end up with a virtual node that has more than one access name. Does anyone know how I can set up a Windows failover cluster where a virtual node has more than one access name/IP?

• FTP Server with MySQL access, and POST notification

  Im looking for an FTP server solution, that we can host either internally on a dedicated server, or on Rackspace Cloud/AWS, that provides a HTTP POST notification when a file is uploaded, and allows user accounts to be created either through an API or MySQL database. There are several offerings that provide email notification - but has anyone come across anything that matches the above requirements. BrickFTP being a IaaS system is an option, but we would prefer something hosted in house. I don't believe the standard FTP servers provided with Apache can do the above ... can they?

• Mystery process crashing machine by using all of the RAM - how to identify?

  I have a Linux machine which runs ~10 in house written processes. Every other day(!) the machine completely runs out of RAM, goes into swap and becomes unresponsive. This happens quickly over a period of a couple of seconds, so it's not feasible to sit watching the machine until it dies. It's a sudden leak, not a gradual one, so top(1) doesn't give any indications something bad may about to happen. What is the best way of identifying which process(es) are causing the trouble?

• Wifi Signal Strengths

  I hope that I have asked this question in the right topic. Basically I use BT (In the U.K.) and I have problems with my router receiving a strong signal in certain rooms of the house, which, therefore makes the internet really slow in some cases it won't work at all. I have had experience working with Virgin Media (UK) before and just changed the channel number and this worked fine, but, do not know if I would receive the same outcome on BT. Could anyone suggest any other things that I could try alongside of the channel change in order to /hopefully/ get a stronger signal, without having to install Ethernet cable?

• Ubutu Server Edition: useful for the home user?

  My question is simple. What (if anything) does Ubuntu Server Edition have to offer to home users? This question is mostly out of curiosity really, but I like asking. I've got a home network set up here with some 6 to 7 machines (most Windows, one Linux). And I was wondering how useful would it be to have a dedicated computer in my house running Ubuntu Server full time. We've had an awful experience with file sharing so far, would it simplify file sharing/transferring? Would I be able to limit the internet bandwidth granted to each PC? Would I be able to monitor in/out internet traffic (both real time and monthly statistics)? Last, and most important, if I'm completely off as to what Ubuntu Server actually is, please say so. I am completely new to it.

• Setup a local file server for two networks

  Hi I would like to setup a local linux file server (using centos and samba) that can be accessed by two independent local networks in the same house. I have 2 networks on the same floor which have Windows 7 computers, but the networks are split as we have 2 internet connections. How do I go about this? Additional info: Currently both the networks use DropBox to send files to each other but that happens via the Internet and hence its slow. Would like to achieve the same locally to increase the speed.

• exchange server 5.5 stops responding

  From last couple of weeks I am getting connection problem with my in-house exchange server 5.5 running on windows 2003. It has been working fine from last 5 years. but from few weeks it is loosing connection with other outlook clients. I have to restart my exchange server to make it work. This happens few times in a week. It looses connection somewhere between 7PM to 8AM as when I come in office. I find this problem, while it leave office it works fine. We have not installed any updates or software since last more than 2 years. What could be the reason for stop working?

• Ping or accessing WAN IP from LAN results in failure on only one box

  Morning/evening gents. I purchased a radical domain name today to set up a name for my services and to set up SSL. I configured the SSL fine and all but when I went to my website I couldn't connect. I can connect to the site with any other device in my house and my friend can connect to it as well from outside of the LAN. I am hosting the services with my computer and I can't access the service. Whenever I ping it using the command prompt I get a result of "General Failure.". It saddens me that they couldn't make a better message as it kind of brings me down. I'm not sure what's the deal here as I have all of my firewalls down and my ports are forwarded. Running Windows 7. Thanks for the assistance chaps.

• Restoring a backup SQL Server 2005 where is the data stored?

  I have two Sql Server database instances on two different machines across the network. Lets call these servers A and B. Due to some infrastructural issues, I had to make a complete backup of the database on server A and robocopy the A.bak over to a shared drive accessible by both A and B. What I want is to restore the database on B. My first issue is to restore the backup on server B but the backup location does not display my shared drive. My next issue is that server B's C: drive has barely any space left and there are some additional partitions that have more space and can house my backup file but I am not sure what happens to the data after I restore the database on B. Would the backup data fill up all the available space on C:? It will be great if somebody explain how the data is laid out after the restore database is initiated on a target database server? Thanks

• Sync laptop and desktop solution/ideas?

  I have a laptop and a desktop I want to keep files up-to-date on both of them. I was thinking of creating a hard drive on 'server' and then changing "my documents" to that server path. It should work all right when there are two computers but what if a laptop uses wireless access at my house and more importantly, when it's connected wirelessly on a different IP range when I'm at college? For the second case, I guess, creating a VPN/remote server connection to the desktop will work, but if I want to make it automatic (my documents mapping), is there way to do that?

• Parsing GeoRSS Feed with jQuery

  I'm attempting to use the jQuery jFeed plugin for parsing an Atom, GeoRSS feed and I'm running into issues extracting the information I need. For example, I need to extract the summary element and I would like to render the contents in a div on my HTML page. Additionally, I'd like to extract the contents from the georss:point elements and pass them into Google Maps to render them as points on a map. The problem is that it seems jFeed is stripping out the GeoRSS-related information. For example, I can extract the title element without issues, but it seems it doesn't extract the summary or georss:point elements, at all.   I cant seem to get my JSON file to work when pulling it in from another domain using JQuerys getJSON. I have placed the callback part at the end of the url but still have no joy. Firebug tells me its a cross domain issue, which seems to make sense as if I place the json file locally the below code (excluding the ?jsoncallback=? works fine) Heres the Jquery part • Steve Jobs Proposes New Apple Campus.It’s As Beautiful As An iPad.

  After the launch of iOS 5, OS X Lion and iCloud Steve Jobs proposed Apple’s plans for construction of a new campus in Cupertino. In a presentation to Cupertino City Council, Steve proposed to construct a spaceship style beautiful building that can house 12000 employees. Apple recently purchased 150 acres of land from HP and others in Cupertino and this land will be used for their new campus. The architectural design of the new campus looks awesome just like their products: iPad / iPhone.It’s a four storied circular building with all curved glasses that can accommodate 12000 employees.,  “We do have a shot at building the best office building in the world,” Jobs told the Council members, “Architecture students will come here to see this.”. The facility is going to be eco-friendly with 80% of landscaping with most of the parking going to underground. The current campus has 3700 trees and Apple is planning to increase them to 6000 trees. The campus will be powered with its own renewable energy source and electric grid as backup. Steve described It’s a pretty amazing building. It’s a little like a spaceship landed. It’s got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle… It’s a circle. It’s curved all the way around. After being warmly greeted by Frances and Francesca, who make sure Front of House and Facilities run smoothly, we embarked on a quick tour of the 2 floors Oracle occupies, led by VP Bo, it was time to seek out some willing volunteers to be interviewed/photographed - what a shy bunch! A bit of coaxing from the social media team was needed here! In a male-dominated environment, the few women on the team caught my eye immediately. I got chatting to Susan, a business analyst and Bronagh, a tech writer. It becomes clear during our chat that the male/female divide is not an issue – “everyone here just gets on with the job,” says Suzanne, “We’re all around the same age and have similar priorities and luckily everyone is really friendly so there are no problems. ” A graduate of Queen’s University in Belfast majoring in maths & computer science, Susan works closely with product management and the development teams to ensure that the final project delivered to clients meets and exceeds their expectations. Bronagh, who joined us following working for a tech company in Montreal and gaining her post-grad degree at University of Ulster agrees that the work is challenging but “the environment is so relaxed and friendly”. Like other colleagues in the office, he is a University of Ulster graduate and works on Reference applications and Merchandising Tools which enable customers to establish e-shops using Oracle technologies. The social activities are headed up by Gordon, a software engineer on the commerce team who joined the team 4 years ago after graduating from the University of Strathclyde at Glasgow with a degree in Computer Science. Everyone is unanimous that the best things about working at Oracle’s Belfast offices are the casual friendly environment and the opportunity to be at the cutting edge of technology. We’re looking forward to our next trip to Belfast for some cool demos and meet candidates. And as for the camera-shyness? Look who came out to have their picture taken at the end of the day! • How to call Office365 web service in a Console application using WCF

  In my previous post, I showed you how to call the SharePoint web service using a console application. In this post, I’d like to show you how to call the same web service in the cloud, aka Office365.In office365, it uses claims authentication as opposed to windows authentication for normal in-house SharePoint Deployment. For Details of the explanation you can see Wictor’s post on this here. The key to make it work is to understand when you authenticate from Office365, you get your authentication token. You then need to pass this token to your HTTP request as cookie to make the web service call.
