• What is the advantage of iSCSI over SMB?

  At my house I'm running a Hyper-V server with a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM acting as a file server. Files are shared across my network using SMB. (Also, the machine is using a PERC 6/i RAID card but I don't think that's important) I'm thinking about setting up a dedicated SAN (iSCSI) machine and then switching my Hyper-V server to ESXi. What are the advantages of using iSCSI versus SMB? I think I would still need a file server OS (eg. Win 2k8) sharing files via SMB so I'm not sure the end result would be any different than my current setup...

• Is there a performance difference between Cat5 and Cat6 keystone blocks?

  I'm going to be wiring my home for ethernet soon, and I've already decided that I want to use Cat6 cable to do it (faster speeds, better performance, etc). During the installation, I'd like to add wall-plates to certain rooms in my house, and the keystone blocks look like the best option for me. My question is: I've seen different keystone blocks on many cabling websites, some say Cat5e and some say Cat6. The Cat6 ones are slightly more expensive. Is there any noticeable performance gain from using a Cat6 keystone? To me, it just seems like the keystone really wouldn't matter, since it's basically like putting an RJ-45 end on a cable. Can I buy the cheaper Cat5e keystone blocks and still have the performance that Cat6 cable will give me? Thanks!

• pinx 501 with print server - 10 licenses

  I have pix 501 with only 10 licenses. I'm already approaching this limit, running 2 computers at home, 2 laptops, PS3, iphones, 2 web cams..not everthing is on all the time, but it's possible as I'm looking into adding a print server, so that I can print from anywhere in the house. So my question is, will the print server count as a connection towards the license? I think it will need default gateway, which in this case will be my pix 501. I've seen somewhere on some othee board saying, don't set default gateway in the print server to pix 501, but then how would that work? is there a work around? I don't need to print from VPN or from outside, just inside..

• new ubuntu server installation - java server not receiving packets

  I have developed a Java server which listens for UDP packets which come from mobile devices. At the moment, it works correctly if I run my Server on my windows PC. I can receive and respond to the UDP packets sent from my phone (over 3g, not wifi). However, I am trying to run the Server on a different computer which I found lying around my house. I have basically done a clean install of Ubuntu Server edition, updated it, installed the java run time environment and configured port forwarding to allow connections on the appropriate port. I have also tried to disable the firewall. The problem is, it doesn't appear as if the server is receiving any packets and I've exhausted my brain thinking on how to solve/debug the problem. Can anyone suggest to me what the problem might be? or more likely something I can do to help me find out more information about what is going wrong.

• Disconnected from WiFi, Windows claims otherwise [closed]

  I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access. Is there a tool that can tell me which program, if any, is disconecting me ?

• Why does my wifi fail to stay connected?

  We have 5 different laptops in the house, 1 macbook, 1 Compaq, 3 dells, plus numerous little devices like ipods, squeezeboxs, squeezebox radios and controllers, you name it. All of them connect to and stay connected to the "downstairs" WIFI just fine. But my laptop (the most expensive of the lot) refuses to stay connected, preferring the much weaker and slower signal upstairs. My laptop is running Win7 (64 bit) Ultimate with an Intel 3945ABG WIFI contoller (It's a Dell Precision M6300). The WIFI Access Point is a Cisco WRT54G2 V1 with firmware: Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) micro Time: 11:11:10 up 42 min, load average: 0.06, 0.01, 0.00 WAN: Disabled

• What is the right way to use Internet Sharing in OS X?

  For a while now I've been using the Wireless in my Mac Mini as a seperate WiFi access point because my main router doesn't quite cover my whole house. There is a dedicated CAT 5E line down to the Mini, which has a static IP address. I've turned Internet Sharing on, using Airport/WiFi but it seems my options for security are limited. Can I do WPA2? Also, it seems like my iPhone only connects 25% of the time, and the rest of the time it claims I've given a bad password. I've tried "Forget this network" repeatedly.

• Why are default spamassassin rules not being applied to emails we generate?

  My company uses a standalone spam-assassin install to test marketing emails, however, mail originating from us does not seem to run the full gamut of test. For example, Spam assassin has a default rule that flags messages that contain the phrase Dear [Something], and it properly flags spam that I feed it.It does not, however, apply that same rule to in house email I send it. Is it possible that spam assassin has white-listed us somehow, perhaps because the mail originates in the same domain as the server or receiver? I believe most of the recent spamassassin questions have been mine, so thanks for bearing with me as I figure this out! • Moving files from Public folder to C: takes a minute, even though they are same hard drive and same

  I have a big file, like 2GB, and would like to move it from Network -> Bookroom -> Users -> Public (this is the computer in the bookroom in the house) to c:\myfiles and they are actually on the SAME hard drive (and same partition). But copying still takes a minute or so? I thought if on the same hard drive and partition, then it is a "move" and it should take 2, 3 seconds only. that public folder also is \\Bookroom\Users\Public Update: Sorry, I actually mean "move" all the way... so it is not copy but move. So that's why I thought it should take 2, 3 seconds only.

• postfix relay access denied from some IPs

  This is driving me nuts. I have Postfix/Dovecot set up on Centos 6 VPS for my emails. I can send and receive emails without any problems on my outlook (home broadband), on my Android phone (3G connection), however when I set up exactly the same email account on Outlook at my friends house I'm getting bouncebacks when I'm trying to send email (receiving works fine): 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied Now if it wasn't working at all I'd understand, but why is it working on several internet connections, but not everywhere? Can someone shed some light on this? Where should I look for the problem?

• Windows 8 doesn't automatically join Wi-Fi network if Ethernet connection is active

  In Windows 7, my laptop would automatically join both an Ethernet network and the Wi-Fi network in my house (both going through the same router). In Windows 8, if the Ethernet connection is present, it doesn't join the Wi-Fi network at all. The reason I noticed this is that if Wi-Fi isn't active, I don't see my AirPlay speakers. My wireless printer is also unavailable until I manually connect to Wi-Fi. To recap: When I turn on my computer and it's connected to Ethernet, this is what my Network Connections control panel looks like: After I manually join my Wi-Fi network, it looks like this: I would prefer for it to join both networks automatically on startup, the way it did in Windows 7. Is there a way to make this happen?

• Install wireless router with cable modem - need authentication server?

  I've bought a wireless router which I'm installing with a Telstra BigPond cable modem for a friend. As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. I guess if I dont get anything more here I'll try what it says on whirlpool and see what happens.

• Shielded ethernet cable and ethernet sockets earthing how to?

  Hi I'm going to install 5 Ethernet sockets in my house using cat5e shielded cable. I decided to use this because the sockets will be on the second floor and the most practical way up is within a trunk along with some mains wiring. The cable will be terminated at the router and at the Ethernet faceplate. What can I use to earth then? The faceplate/router are both plastic hence no earth wire needed. I can't use the earth wire within the main socket can I? I figured it will be very very dangerous. I don't want to be connecting to the earth block on the mains either since I totally incompetent when it comes to mains electricity.

  Hi, I have a home networking question. I have two DLINK wireless/wired routers in my house, connected to the Internet ISP. There are a 2 computers on each of the two networks. Network1: has 192.168.0.0 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10, with COMP1 having a fixed IP of 162.168.0.1 Network2: has 192.168.0.100 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.101 - 192.168.0.110 with COMP2 having a static IP of 162.168.0.101, a WIRELESS printer on 192.168.0.102 Both routers have a netmask of 255.255.255.0 My need is to connect the two routers, so that I can Remote desktop for COMP1 to COMP2 and viceversa, and COMP1 to connect to the wireless printer on Network2. can anyone help to set this up so that the both networks can talk to each other. • need advice for storing data setup hardware for client with 80TB per year of data footprint increase

  hi everyone, i currently have a client that will be adding replicated data from satellite locations in the number of approximately 80TB per year. with this said in year 2 we will have 160TB and so on year after year. i want to do some sort of raid 10 or raid 6 setup. i want to keep the servers to approximately 4u high and rack mounted. all suggestions welcome on a replication strategy. we will be wanting to have one instance of the data in house and the other to be co-located (any suggestions on co-locate sites too?). the obvious hardware will be something like a rack mount server with hot swap trays and dual xeon based type processors. the use of the data is for archives of information, files will be made up of small file sizes. i can add or expand to this question if it is too vague. thanks for looking.

• LAN connection suddenly domain_not_set.invalid

  I went to work today - internet fine as always. Came back, dreaded yellow triangle. I can connect wirelessly like i am now on my tablet. Thats completely fine. But through LAN I get the domain_not_set.Invalid message if I renew my IP for example. It seems I just don't have a DNS. But I have literally not touched anything no ones even been in the house. Hows that happen? Any help on why only wireless works would be great, I am gonna buy a wireless adapter tomorrow for the interim but I would like to know why. Thanks.

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much! An example of what the folders are named: "Highschool Graduation.avi", "Birthday party.avi", "Somesong.mp3" The HDD is connected to a Linksys E4200 router (Firmware Version: 2.0.37).   Hi Folks, I've started a new job at a house where they've got an amazingly unruly patchwork of Linux, xBSD, and OpenSolaris boxes. Every box has its own user auth using local /etc/passwd, etc. Users/Groups have differing uids/gids on each machine, and each machine has its own /home/ tree. (no central NAS /homes) My job is get get everything into an LDAP directory and use that for login auth. How do I get LDAP to deal with the differing uids/gids? Thanks.

• Terrible Performance with SATA Drives on Dell PowerEdge, steps to troubleshoot?

  I had asked this question earlier and the question went missing so here it is again. Bought a DELL Poweredge 2950 to use as in-house QA Server. Disk performance is beyond terrible, 1000-4000 ms response time on the drive with our SQL Server database .mdf. Sql Server disk queue upwards of 300 at times. I'm a software guy, can anyone help me with steps to determine the issue? I don't know what RAID controller it has, how can I determine that? I'm speculating it could be BIOS issue. Perhaps the server used to have another kind of drive in it and when I added SATA the ??? buffer size is wrong??? Perhaps I chose wrong options (chose defaults) when setting up the RAID 1 arrays? I thought RAID 1 was a performance array?

• How to make a server check it's own availability on the web?

  Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot?   I have always been able to connect to every wireless router secured or unsecured wep or wpa. I had Fios installed and could not connect. Verizon suggested it was my computer and gave me an outside wirless drive to use, it worked. I got rid of fios and went back to comcast and threw out the drive, but now 2 years later, I am sitting at my friends house haveing the same problem.   Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

• Can't connect back to the wireless network after the password was changed

  Family changed the network password and some other network settings after new computers were brought into the house because apparently they wouldn't work with what we had. Actually an off-site tech remotely changed it, and I have no idea what he did. My laptop detects the network (it shows up under available networks) but whenever I try to connect it says: Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again. I wish I could give more details, config settings, but frankly I have no idea what I'm looking for. This is XP (also, not a password issue, I know the password, it's just that I have no idea where to enter it, etc.)

• Wi-fi signal with keeping the internet cable

  So the situation is that I have Ethernet cable which provides internet to my computer. Thing I want is to have wi-fi connection in my house and Ethernet cable (like I have before) to use for my PC. I will use wi-fi for my laptop and mobile phone. I think I need router for that and I'm looking at Asus RT-N16 (suggested in Coding Horror) for it, but I am not sure. Is it the right thing for me and I will be able to get wi-fi signal and keep the Ethernet cable? I guess the system will be that current cable goes into router, router provides wi-fi signal and gives back new cable... or something like that. Thanks in any advice!
